W-Wait, did I say something and missed it? |

Surprise, it's me!

I'm still wondering what Ash meant... |
looks like we'll have to wait til she comes back eh?
also hullo Stars! |
Hi!! Did you guys miss me? I had therapy today and then went on a walk with my best friend and her two dogs!
Sounds really nice! Good to get out sometimes, I didn't today, but I usually tend to avoid going out if I can.
I've been itching to go outside and exercise but it's been cold and there's nowhere I feel safe going alone nearby! So I'm glad my friend is around for a while now.
i miss going to the gym to exercise! i had such a good and consistent schedule going on before the pandemic struck, and now i've completely lost my groove and can't get back into it :<
I can't do gyms very well, my mom pressured me about them too much and it's like.. bad. I prefer being outside or swimming!
Going to a gym was something I maybe could have possibly theoretically attempted to do, but then pandemic happened and everything swung. Don't know if I'd be going again any time soon, or if it's really a thing I'd want to. Kinda felt pressured honestly. I admire the people who could go regularly though for sure.

The idea of other people being able to see me during working out is the thing that's turned me away from it. Music would probably help, yeah.
I did like to listen to podcasts when I went to the gym before. Sort of.
I've listened to podcasts doing other things, but I often feel like I just can't focus on them anymore. Like if I'm listening to someone while doing anything else I sorta just stop paying attention to what they're saying. I'm so used to occupying myself with other things in order to ignore people I've wanted to ignore, so it's kinda tough to not do that at this point.
That's fair! I like to listen to them while I'm doing art now, or going on a long drive, or while resting my eyes and trying not to actually nap in the afternoon sometimes. I only keep up with two consistently anyway so it's not too tough.
i seem to be in the minority here, but i almost always prefer pure silence when i'm doing something. i don't know why... i'm a big fan of music after all.
I do too normally, but sometimes I gotta hear sounds to calm down. My anxiety is very weird. I also like to time myself out a bit when I'm doing something like needle felting because if I'm not aware of time passing I might hurt myself working too long!
dang that's me with posting around Forum Games lol. i'll go into an auto-pilot state and after an hour i'll check my post count and see that i've racked up another hundred :O
i love ambient background sounds tho, those are the bomb. |
I used to fall asleep to whatever ambience I could find that wasn't 10 hours long (seriously, I'm not gonna sleep for 10 hours the whole time and I don't want it frightening me when I wake up) but nowadays I'll just sleep in silence.
Ambience usually just comes from whatever game I'm playing, and it's really nice to have. Either it's really pleasant, or very spooky, depending on the game, and I enjoy that a lot. Adds to the experience a lot. |
i legit tried to sleep with those 10 hour rain sounds a couple times, but it annoyed me when waking up more than anything lol. i've never been a fan of in game ambience, since it's too artificial for me, but i'm glad it works for you!
Yeah, I've definitely had game ambience feel too artificial for me, Phasmophobia is a recent example I can think of where whenever you're inside a building it sounds drastically different and will instantly switch when you take your first step in so it kinda breaks the immersion. In most games though, it's really cool to have.
you'd think that with a horror game like that, they'd focus more on getting the sound to be as accurate as possible right? (i think i read a study that sound was the most important aspect to horror?)
Yeah, for sure. The game has proximity voice chat so you can only hear people close to you and you can use walkie-talkies which is a cool thing with immersion, if you're being hunted the walkie-talkies actually cut out with static and it gives you that feeling of urgency, but the sounds in general just aren't the greatest and have confused me more than making me afraid. There's a sound for going up stairs that I legitimately thought was a friend's stomach rumbling.
lmao oh dear proximity voice chat in a horror game sounds terrifying to me. i'll pass on this game thank you very much :p even if the sounds do seem broken lol
It's a really neat touch for a horror game to have, and did kinda make me worried when I played it. Most of the time you just use the walkie-talkies anyways, and staying in a group is encouraged. It's really more of a detective game than a horror game, since the goal is always to try different things and identify the type of ghost and get out alive. I usually just end up telling friends it's a detective game that can get scary sometimes. The sounds being broken just give me a laugh now, though the people I play with seem pretty insistent on getting me to play scarier games...
well shoot apparently i misunderstood the time and i guess i still have around 45 mins or so to knock out a couple posts before i need to go! winning in this thread first~
Hello everyone! How are you all doing today?
top of the morning to ya Squirtlenator! i'm getting drowsy over here since it's midnight but i figured i'd knock out a couple more posts before i hit the hay~ hbu?
I'm alright ty

Tbh, as soon as I joined I saw the VPP stuff and got real excited. I love that kind of thing a lot. Just wait though,I'll get burned out eventually!
Been too long since I posted in this thread

Yeah, think I'm gonna call it a day now. Past midnight now in my time zone.

So happy to start vpp, even though i'll probably be super casual and possibly forgetful with it

wait can i request more than one right now
you gotta knock 'em out one at a time, though you can raise two at the same time if you tag team with someone!
it's okay i'm capable of speed posting.
but my attention span is bad so i'll probably end up back on chess.com or youtube trying to get into the habit of actually paying attention to my chess games. i would probably be in the 800's if I did. |
oh you don't pay full attention to your chess games? i literally stop everything to focus on it because i literally can't play properly otherwise.
lol nope. i multitask and watch youtube between turns.
This is a really poor idea and I don't advise it. Sometimes if I tabbed out a while i go back and think "wait am i white or black". |
Heyooooooo!
that's hilarious lmao. i spend my time between turns trying to find lines and strategies. having youtube playing would do nothing but distract me completely.
Quote:
also @roni that's a much better idea and it's how i should play. it's not uncommon for me to come back and lose my queen to a bishop. I was trying to make more of an effort today so i'm closing in on 650 |
I know how to move the pieces in chess, but I can't actually PLAY. i'm more of a checkers man.
i knew you were definitely a higher rank than 600+. just need to weed out the distractions heh.
Chess has ruined my ability to play checkers.
I tried to go back and I just can't do it for some reason. the board feels so cramped. |
I used to play Dragon Draughts on my copy of Spyro: Season of Flame for HOURS on GBA, which was literally just checkers.
i used to play checkers with high school friends back in the day. we used to use blue and red bottle caps and it was fun. i don't recall winning a single game tho...
when i get the king promoted in checkers i just move it back and fourth like a degenerate.
lmao yeah i've never done that so i can't relate. have you ever experienced having 3 or more pieces captured consecutively?
That's exactly what happened when i turned on checkers vs a bot last week.
I just closed the game right off. |
oh dear. i hope you recover soon~ took me a couple days personally lol.
I feel like with chess there's just much more control over the board.
there's just much more variation with as to how the pieces move really. i feel more free to move around in chess and can plan better for some reason.
for something amusing, you can go on lichess and turn the bot up to 3,000 elo.
it turns into "don't win. survive". |
will definitely give that a try lmao. wouldn't a grandmaster find a way to beat it tho?
Shockingly, nope. Grandmasters can hardly even get a draw with it. Magnus is 2875 ELO, but when you get that high even a tiny amount makes a world of difference.
damn i underestimate just how strong these chess bots are nowadays. i remember the days of Deep Blue where it was an achievement to beat Kasparov once out of like 5 tries.
I believe Kasparov returned for a tournament against modern high level players in 2017. He placed 8th out of 10th. In 2016 he beat 15 players at once.
Not bad for someone who's been retired for over a decade. Oh, and a fun fact you might know. Magnus did play Kasparov when Magnus was only 13 years old. Magnus was up material, but kasparov saved it with a draw. |
man's still accurate af that's for sure. hopefully his mind powers on like that.
i've been thinking about downloading his Masterclass for a while now. |
This guy is incredible for learning https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6hOVYvNn79Sl1Fc1vx2mYA
It's why I've been rising up in ELO so quickly. |
ooh i haven't heard of this guy yet. nice to see someone linking something other than Gothamchess huehue. i'll perhaps give him a look later on.
I actually prefer him much more than gothamchess.
He's an IM rated around 2300, but he explains in a way everybody can understand, and takes players of all levels seriously. If he gets matched with a 500 ELO player, he takes them with the same attitude as a 2,000 rated player. He usually doesn't end games early, so he can explain things fully. |
ah, respectful. i appreciate that out of him then :) excellent for the community to grow further as new players won't feel like they're being belittled or anything.

Queen's back! You miss me?~ Happy to see you guys are enjoying VPP though, maybe we'll see more back and forths?~ I'm not too educated in checkers and chess and stuff like that, though it reminds me how my boyfriend's recently been learning mahjong and shogi and how I've got no clue what's going on there, but it seems like he's enjoying it. |
Hey Aisaka! How are you doing?

Very hungry currently! Waiting for my food to arrive after ordering... an amount of food I will not state, haha. Was away yesterday since I had some not so great stuff to get through, but I think it's better at this point. I've spent most of today talking with friends and realized I hadn't popped in yet today, so I wanted to say yahallo and steal some wins.~ Hope you're doing well too. |
@Aisaka it was actually that brief conversation we had which entirely ignited my interest back into chess.
Since then my points have doubled and I've become way better as a player. I hope one day when the covid situation ends to join a group on my campus |

Just wasn't the same without you. I hope everything works out. |

Oh that's sweet! Glad to hear that could motivate you back into it. Let me know how that goes! |

That's really sweet of you, thank you. It's likely another dip into a depressive phase, but I'm happy I got all my important work out of the way before it hit, and it shouldn't be too bad since I'm better at handling it all now. It's usually a rough transition that smooths out over time. |

Tbh - you never heard me say this ok - but there's more to life than VPP :) I post here because I enjoy it, VPP is an awesome bonus though! You ever thought raising the cute little things? I used to play chess but it became boring and stopped being enjoyable for me. I do still play random chess sometimes, when my brain allows, but I'm not quite as sharp as I used to be. It is wonderful seeing so many here enjoy it though, its an awesome game! I won't ask about your bad stuff, but I'm sending virtual hugs your way, and I hope it everything is back to normal for you soon as 😊 |

I think a lot of people get swept up in the rush to "do it all" in VPP, and it can definitely seem daunting because of that. The best course of action is actually to take it casually and enjoy it. If I'm already making posts anyway, then why not collect cute little friends along the way? :) |
VPP seems so fun now, I don't even know how long it's been around. When I was on the social media team I don't even remember it existing. Also you guys seem so dedicated to it and put so much effort into the entire thing, it's admirable.
i have a somewhat addictive personality so that explains why i'm so into it atm and invade literally every thread i see where i can contribute. i'm glad there's others now who are as invested as i am, because it felt so lonely the first few months hehe.
I can't classify myself as addictive, but actually very competitive and I try to be good at everything.
It's why chess, even as a hobby turned into "Must be 1,000 points". |
i was pretty competitive back in the day myself. i guess i've just been disappointed again and again since a good bunch of my friend circle was way better than me at literally everything i tried to get into. FPS games, chess, basketball, badminton, table tennis, etc. it always put me down.
If you recall I made a thread in off topic about being intelligent. That was actually because I was upset that I wasn't improving fast enough. I don't know anybody into chess so I can't play over the board, until I join a club or something.
but yeah never been too great at sports. I even broke my wrist learning to roller skate |
best of luck! hope you find a good club that helps you improve :D
i was sort of ok at physical sports like basketball, but i couldn't handle full court running for more than 10 minutes, so i would always get gassed out right away. i was happy being a reserve shooting random three pointers from the sideline lol. sorry about your wrist though, an experience like that would've definitely put me off from roller skating for a while. |
Yeeeah the competitive side of me also thinks "What if I get so good at chess now I join the club as the best player". But I try to remember the goal should always be improvement and fun, not winning everything.
Oh for sure. I can't even bike for more than 10 minutes without feeling tired. It's funny because I'm relatively healthy weight, more on the slim side. It's just that doing that kind of physical exercise after not doing it for a while is difficult. Broken bones are not fun. I'm just glad that every time I've fractured something it's been arm related, not leg. |
i wonder what theme to make now... its all over the place right now anyways

I was biking multiple times a day, but the weather got snowy and icy, after that it's been unbearably cold. Some of it was just lack of motivation, but more so the weather. I had one major arm fracture aside from my wrist, but I snapped two bones in one time. Amusingly, it was a regular fall. I just landed in a terrible way.
