School is overrated. All they teach you nowadays is how to be a mindless worker drone.

ZeoStar February 20th, 2022 1:13 AM

The posts about lag actually made me check the page numbers.

"oh. only 22".

Starlight February 20th, 2022 6:23 AM

Yeah Megan and Zeo are right... lag talk won't help you win. Maybe a bribe or two though...

shows Ash's favourite chocolate
Oh, I just have tons of chocolate lying about here, if only someone would want to take them! 😏

ReKoil February 20th, 2022 7:17 AM

Have you tried attaching them to your PM to Starlight? 😏
That totally works you know 😉

Megan February 20th, 2022 9:19 PM

You can't bribe me with chocolate! I already know where Starlight hides her stash.

StCooler February 21st, 2022 2:46 PM

I will defend that chocolate to the death Starlight!
And take a percentage of it.

If school was meant to make us smart and rational and critical, then how will we become consumers?

Kim-desu February 21st, 2022 7:31 PM

School makes us not smart? https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTUL2cR5KWWJiAZWGDAYFOVdbLRtl8np1O5dQ&usqp=CAU

Schools are supposed to train people to seek out knowledge. But that doesn't really happen. It's a complicated mess if you try looking up the causes (but it involves capitalism).

ReKoil February 22nd, 2022 1:32 PM

I was too busy just getting through the day and making it through school to learn anything :coolcat:

This is a relevant point!

There you lost me, I don't understand what you mean XD

To me, school is not teaching you life or a job, it's teaching you to be a citizen of your country. That's why when people tell me that mathematics aren't useful in your every day life, I reply: "is there any useful class at school?"

Do you know what PISA is? It's a standardized test that was at least used to gauge how different kids in different countries compare to each other. I can't speak for other countries but I do know that my country was usually very bad at it. Schools were simply not equipped to teach properly. The state wasn't well equipped to handle the consequences, either. So what did they do? They gave it to someone else. And if you give it to someone whose modus operandi is for profit then you can easily imagine where that leads.

Afaik the US has a similar issue where private schools are simply better than public ones. So that doesn't really bode well for most of those who attend a public one.

ReKoil February 23rd, 2022 11:56 AM

Do they teach you how to win this thread in school? 😉

StCooler February 23rd, 2022 4:58 PM

Unfortunately, this is something you have to learn in the field.

Yeah my country is also very bad at this kind of tests.
What you say is strange though, because in my country, education in your country is often seen as infinitely better than ours (less hours at school, more time for sports, more time for languages, that could be why your English is better than mine :P).

I don't know about school policies in your country, so I can't really compare. I've also been out of school for a long time at this point.
But I can assure you that my English skills did not come from school. Most of it comes from playing video games and watching Youtube videos. Like, there was literally a 5+ year gap in my life where I did nothing but isolate myself from society and spend all day watching Let's Plays on Youtube. (It's also why the isolation part of the pandemic doesn't really affect me as much. It's literally not the worst isolation experience I had in life xD)

ReKoil February 24th, 2022 7:33 AM

I learned English by myself from watching movies, listening to music and playing videogames, way before they started teaching it in elementary school. I did learn how to write the words properly at that point though, since I just wrote them the way I heard them before that xD
It's also probably why my English ended up a weird mix of both American and British English =p

StCooler February 24th, 2022 2:46 PM

I learned English with videogames, Youtube, and... programming! Because when you have to write variables / functions / classes and above all, comments in English, you end up learning ^^
But if you heard me speak English... 😱

Same XD

Megan February 24th, 2022 9:06 PM

It just goes to show that you can learn a lot better when you're having fun. They kind of tried to teach us programming in school using the worst programming language imaginable (the one that I happen to have to use at work now, as well) but the first time I actually did some fun programming stuff was the Neverwinter Nights construction kit. I never actually figured out how to do proper programming with it (idk why but the concepts of variables and functions didn't really click with me at that time). But I still managed to do some crazy stuff. xD

Starlight February 25th, 2022 6:37 AM

They teach English pretty badly in schools in my country if I'm being honest 😉

That explains the existence of the word "blimey"! 😉

ReKoil February 25th, 2022 11:41 AM

Isn't English class in the UK just an accent class? Gotta teach people how to speak posh properly, ya know 😜

Tsutarja February 25th, 2022 12:04 PM

i would rather take dialect than english tbh

Our views on programming differ, I love C++ XD
What would your favourite language be?

I wasn't talking about C++. I was talking about the trainwreck that is Delphi alongside the buggy/outdated mess that is the entire IDE/environment it comes with.

I've tried a lot of programming languages but don't feel like I've found one that sticks. C, C++, C#, Java, Delphi, FPC, Haskell, Rust, Python, D, some ASM, a bunch of different shell environments like bash and zsh and to some extend powershell, Ruby, Javascript and probably a couple more that I just forgot.

I guess Python is quite servicable. I'm also kinda tired of looking for a new language at this point, though. ^^"

Sheep February 26th, 2022 7:19 AM

I feel like I've always been good at English, idk why. I just know some things I'm not sure were ever properly taught to us. Maybe thanks to all those fanfics I read and wrote as a kid lol.
