The best days are those that fly!

Megan April 3rd, 2023 8:08 PM

Whenever I try to get a good grasp on the moment I always realize that our western dependance on the clock is very much hindering. There are many civilizations that don't rely on time measurement who still end up doing fine and end up a lot happier, too.

I don't necessarily mind the days that fly by it's just that I often feel like I wasted them by not really doing anything in particular =P

You mean, tribes that are lost in the forest in Africa or the rainforest?
Well, I don't envy them, they live hard, unstable and precarious lives and I wouldn't assume they are happier ^^"
I'd say we depend on the clock because we are trying to fit too many things in a same day!

I guess?
I kinda got inspired by people talking about how they have experimented with these types of lifestyles (not relying on the clock, for example). They seemed to have made some good experiences with it. Though, it also needs to be stated that they're also self-employed. They don't need to obey to people's rules other than themselves most of the time. ^^"

You could also just use Hypnosis to put someone to sleep and count on their fingers instead.

ReKoil April 11th, 2023 7:07 AM

I will probably follow an hypnosis course at some point lol. I wanna learn how to do that. Anyway all I know is that there's a lot of misconception around it.

StCooler April 11th, 2023 11:35 PM

241 418

As far as I understand, it is not a magic thing, but rather, the target is "feeling" so much social pressure to "obey" the hypnotist that their brain is basically obeying without question. That's why it doesn't work on everyone, not everyone feels so much pressure.

ReKoil April 12th, 2023 8:36 AM

Social pressure huh... yeah that tends to be ineffective on me =P

I'm probably seen as a huge jerk irl for not wanting to follow certain traditions. Like throwing birthday parties. Why should I throw money at people I don't like so they can eat and drink on my behalf if I don't even like being alife, let alone had a birthday. And why do I need to buy Christmas presents for people I only meet like once or twice a year?

Okay, that's it, you've posted some things around this site that I've nodded my head at quite a few times, but this? This I literally couldn't agree with more.
I'm made to feel like a jack*** whenever I have to tell someone not to buy me anything for some stupid holiday that I don't even celibrate.
Much less try to think of some rudimentary 'object' to 'prove' that I 'really know them' or whatever the hell when they do! Seriously, **** that.

Let me buy someone a gift on my own time, for someone that I actually like, for just being a decent person. Not for some dumb*** 'Tradition'.

ReKoil April 13th, 2023 5:40 AM

241 422

Depends on the holiday for me. I quite like Christmas.
I don't do Christmas gifts every year anymore though. My brother and his wife are like rabbits and my wallet can't handle all the new additions if I keep doing it yearly xD

StCooler April 13th, 2023 5:18 PM

241 423

I've been away from my family for like 7 years in a row so I've spent most of my Christmas's alone, so no money wasted on presents :coolcat:

Megan April 18th, 2023 8:20 PM

I got a bonus this month. It's actually enough for an entire months worth of paying bills. So, I spent an entire week looking for stuff I could buy with it. I need a new computer at some point as my current one is slowly dying.
Then my mother let me know that taxes happened and she needs money. So, basically, I never got anything out of that bonus. And I'm feeling very empty inside. <_<

ReKoil April 19th, 2023 11:02 AM

241 436

Did you at least set aside some of the money for the eventual computer replacement?

I would've bought the computer or set money aside for it first. Although I personally don't mind lending any excess money to relatives in need, I do need to actually consider it excess.
My own computer is getting pretty old too and will need replacement sooner or later. I wanna try to keep using it until it's reached being a decade old though, at the least.
The stuff I do on a daily basis it still handles fine so the main problem will be if my keyboard will last. Certain letters struggle to show up even after multiple button presses. And for example my Print Screen and 9/( buttons no longer work at all. I literally copy paste that bracket out of text file instead xD

Money isn't an issue for me. Even without that bonus I could easily affort a new PC. For years I've only spent the bare minimum of my wages to pay bills and get food. So, giving my mother money would have been possible even without that bonus, as well.

But I'm also bad at spending money. Like, I literally try to spend more but always fall back to my default minimum behavior. ^^"
That bonus kinda had a psychological effect where I felt like I could finally affort something without that nagging feeling in the back of my head...

My laptop actually is already over ten years old. The touchpad has been broken for years, the keyboard has a bunch of keys not working. I've actually been using an external keyboard+mouse for years now. The harddrive has slowed down significantly. This year it also randomly started failing at times: I've already had three instances where booting it up lead to "no operating system found" error messages. So, it is an indicator that I want to look for a new PC in the future. ^^"

_confused_piplup_ April 19th, 2023 11:30 PM

Lol, I guess you should look at a new PC indeed.
If I knew where I would end up living and working, I'd get a home computer and eventually replace parts with the passing of time. But that will probably take another decade if I am lucky, so I have to stick with laptops for now.

You're making my almost decade old laptop sound young xD

StCooler April 20th, 2023 5:38 PM

A laptop that lasts 10 years :O
I had a gaming laptop for six years, it still works very well, but it's no longer enough to run modern games (I wanted to play Sekiro and Monster Hunter, and it couldn't...). I'm a bit sad I had to replace this long-lasting, loyal and reliable laptop for performance reasons and not because it was not working...

Megan April 20th, 2023 8:28 PM

241 441

To be fair: I've kinda used and abused mine quite a lot.

I originally got it for 800€ in 2012. So it was a pretty alright model. It was my first experience of getting an advanced Linux system installed (one of those where you have to do everything manually). That was quite a pain. ^^"
It's a gaming laptop but especially in the later years I've only really used it for browsing and Youtube and stuff like that. That doesn't change the fact that I've played games like Skyrim on it before. There was even a time when the fan started getting louder so I tried opening and cleaning it. Putting it back I ended up with a couple screws left unscrewed and a touchpad that no longer worked and my broken keys probably date back to that event, as well. ^^"

And that was like 2 or 3 years into its life cycle. Given that it still survived for that long I'm just really impressed. For all I know I might never get one like this ever again. Like, its estimated life span was 4 years. At least that's what the guy who sold it told me.

_confused_piplup_ April 21st, 2023 12:02 AM

241 442

Yeah I won't spend more than 1000 euros on a laptop tbh. I am a long time laptop user as well. The only downside to this is that with time your computer is quite less powerful if compared to the rest.
I ended up two years ago working with a laptop with 4GB of RAM. That's not too great.
So, when I got my new laptop two years ago, I just went for good specs so that it keeps performing even after many years.
Actually, Linux helps. My old laptop worked really good with Arch. The only thing that kept not working was the webcam. When I set it up it worked alright, but then it would stop working at times and I had to set up it again. If I had the want and knowledge of today, I'd probably go and fix it lol

ReKoil April 21st, 2023 8:02 AM

241 443

Megan's Laptop only has 2 years on mine =O

Bought mine in January 2014, so in another 9 months it'll be a decade old.
Iirc it was around € 1.050 at the time. It had a pretty strong i7 line processor, and the first couple years were smooth. Then overheating started setting in due to dust clogup and I started cleaning it as best as I could since I could not actually open the fan without having to disassemble the entire dang thing. I bought a cooling pad at the time and I could still run a lot of demanding games on it for quite some years.
I haven't used it much for gaming anymore last 2 years roughly, simply because it can't handle any demanding games anymore for longer periods of time.
Which isn't much of a problem as I've been gaming on the Switch lite instead =P

Megan April 22nd, 2023 2:37 AM

241 444

It's funny how nowadays you find laptops with 16 or 32 GB of RAM everywhere. I never really made much use of the 8 I have on my current one. ^^"

My next one is probably one that is built to last. The only thing I don't like is that every new one seems to come with an SSD instead of an HDD. They are faster. That's true. But they also have a reduced lifespan. So, I don't know what I'll do. I may need to come up with a different backup strategy, too. Just in case.

StCooler April 23rd, 2023 2:27 PM

ReKoil May 1st, 2023 6:12 AM

241 480

I go to clothing stores only twice a year because I bulk buy clothes pretty much xD
My pants in particular live short lives in general so I have to buy like at least 6 new long pants for the cold seasons and 6 shorts for the summer. Depending on how many of them are still intact in my wardrobe that number only goes up from there.

Also my shoes last under a year nowadays. Roughly 8-10 months =\

StCooler May 1st, 2023 5:05 PM

241 481

I generally buy like 5 clothes, not much more because I don't like to spend a lot of money at once XD
I definitely need new shoes by the way.

Megan May 1st, 2023 8:22 PM

241 482

"It's expensive to be poor" comes to mind. Most of the cheap clothing just isn't well made and falls apart quickly. But even some of the expensive brands create their clothes very cheaply. The entire clothing industry is just severely messed up. Like, most of the people who make those clothes aren't even being paid minimum wage, either. :(

I think it can be worthwhile to spend some time looking up some trustworthy brands. They may be more expensive. But at least you get some better control on the clothes you actually buy.

I also occasionally try to sew old broken stuff back together. With what little sewing skills I have. xD

ReKoil May 2nd, 2023 7:07 AM

241 483

The store I buy from is big on bio-cotton, which is supposedly better for the environment but it's not like I can actually go and check that xD
The difference between normal and bio-cotton is supposedly just that they don't use pesticides, but natural insect repellents.

StCooler May 2nd, 2023 6:13 PM

241 484

I wonder what's a natural insect repellent ^^"
Except, say, ladybugs, which hunt insects iirc.

Megan May 2nd, 2023 8:11 PM

241 485

Bio seems to be the new "normal". Supposedly all the vegetables and fruit that are not labeled as such are just low quality food. Something about nutrients being worse due to the stuff they were exposed to.

moon May 2nd, 2023 9:03 PM

241 486

isnt bio stuff also not allowed to be genetically modified?

ReKoil May 2nd, 2023 11:33 PM

241 487

I just know most products get more expensive the moment they slap 'bio' onto it.

As for the bio-cotton clothes they seem to wear down faster. Emphasis on seem as I also started making more hours when those started being introduced to that store... then again I also started keeping more pants at the same time in my wardrobe...

moon May 3rd, 2023 12:48 AM

241 488

organic cotton seems much better than "normal" cotton from environmental and healrh standpoints.

Tsutarja May 3rd, 2023 6:46 AM

241 489

i'll be straight up honest it's hard for me to differentiate between organic and non organic on a lot of foods

There are way too many different marks for various things related to either bio food, or more animal friendly food here.

Not even all of them, but an image of all of them is gonna be hard to find.
I also don't remember what some of the ones on the pic are from xD

Not saying it's a bad thing, but I've literally seen too many of them to even remember what all of them mean xD

organic (or "ecological" as it's called here) is a speficic term i believe, but then there's a lot of individual markings that denote adjecent things.

Same.
I'd say the fruits / vegetables seem smaller and rot faster?

Afaik, there are only a couple few of those that actually mean it. More often than not large corporations just try to mislead their customers into thinking their products are bio stuff. The most glaring example is when the package of a product has the color green on it. It doesn't have to be bio, but because it's green some people think it is.

And drowning people with different symbols conveniently adds to the decision fatigue which means they are more likely to give up and just pick whatever. But that's just a bonus. <_<

I wouldn't be surprised if some supermarkets put those logos on products that don't deserve it.

It probably depends on the country but I'd say, in Europe, there are regulations ^^"

Regulations are one thing. The country I live in still hasn't figured out how the internet works. ^^"

There are yeah. Actually proving that a product wrongly has a label can take years though.
There's pretty hefty fines if it does actually get proven, but all the manufacturer has to do is actually comply to the label in the mean time and it will often be dropped.

True. I may even be able to start in 2033. I only need to start the bureaucratic process as quickly as possible! xD
