Jaybob September 1st, 2005 6:32 AM

o yes sorry this is the discussion sorry i was so happy that i finally got to be hosting a contest that I forgot lol.

pikafirefight September 1st, 2005 6:37 AM

what is the point of a contest about one thing, some people could have never heard of FF i hardly know any of the characters except off 10, 8 and 9

Jaybob September 1st, 2005 6:38 AM

well then do that or you could give me ideas before ppl start posting...

DarkPegasus September 1st, 2005 7:11 AM

I also don't know any FF charters(I was going to search n google XD)... But anyway another nice theme is religion... Like the voice of the god on a ray of sun etc.

Jaybob September 1st, 2005 7:16 AM

ummmmm.....maybe you could search on google ;) or you could make up a character with a weapon... can be custom

Ark Kuvis September 1st, 2005 7:21 AM

How could ANY ONE not know of Final Fatantasy!
Well, I got the instruction book for FF7 here. I can skan some of the cast if you need it.
Any limit to the poses? (Everyone knows I'm doing FE style. Gotta beat The great Mattaias)

Jaybob September 1st, 2005 7:22 AM

nope you can do anything Daviku

Ionem September 1st, 2005 7:55 AM

For discussional purposes, here's the entry I posted in the entry thread.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y263/ionem/cloudutor.gif

It's about 90% original. The only thing I didn't do was the faces, though I modified them a bit.

Allstories September 1st, 2005 10:42 AM

Ugh. This is stupid. These contests need to be more broad. Not EVERYONE has ever played Final Fantasy. It's going to be harder for me to slaughter everyone now.

pikafirefight September 1st, 2005 10:58 AM

hey just what i said, **** shortness thing

Alex_ September 1st, 2005 11:22 AM

Agreed this is stupid,i've never even played FF...>> Bad move by FG letting you do this...=/

DarkPegasus September 1st, 2005 11:35 AM

Noooooooo! I just started making a FF sprite! (found a pic on google)

Jaybob September 1st, 2005 11:36 AM

fine you got any other ideas???

DarkPegasus September 1st, 2005 11:43 AM

^ As I said religion is a pretty cool topic... And it has a lot of room.

Jaybob September 1st, 2005 11:47 AM

yeh tho wont that be borin??? we could do sport or something

DarkPegasus September 1st, 2005 11:52 AM

How? Armaggedon, the wrath of god, four horseman of the apocalypse and so on...

Forest Grovyle September 1st, 2005 11:58 AM

He didn't say what theme he was going to do in his PM so I assumed it would be something broader...my mistake :( I agree that it should be as not everyone has played the FF games. I'll PM him and ask for another theme.

Umbreon's Shadow September 1st, 2005 12:11 PM

Maybe a good theme would be Anime Related?Like Pokemon,Full Metal Alchemist and stuff like that.

Jaybob September 1st, 2005 12:23 PM

ok i have one you have to do super heros.... or has anyone heard of sailor moon?

Sylphiel September 1st, 2005 12:29 PM

Nah...it's best to stay away from particular series of any kind. All that does is exclude more people than is necessary, since not everybody will know about that series or even like it.

Something like superheroes sounds like it'd be okay, though. It's broad enough.

Jaybob September 1st, 2005 12:34 PM

ok then just superheroes then is that ok?

Umbreon's Shadow September 1st, 2005 12:37 PM

Okay with me,we lost enough time already...We have to choose something.

Allstories September 1st, 2005 12:40 PM

Someone delete this thread. Y'know what they say. If at first you don't succeed, destroy any evidence that you ever tried.

Jaybob September 1st, 2005 12:44 PM

ok super heroes is the theme get workin please and it's my thread so dont start telling everyone to delete it.

armadilloHD September 1st, 2005 1:03 PM

That's not fair! I worked tirelessly on my entry and you just change it because some people haven't played the games? If they don't know about it then they should look it up in wikipedia!

Davey-kun September 1st, 2005 1:11 PM

well ive just made a super hero sprite so, either way its gonna be annoyin, and super heros is a much broader subject.

Umbreon's Shadow September 1st, 2005 1:12 PM

There ARE a lot of FF games to.And people can just search on google for info. Its not that hard.

Forest Grovyle September 1st, 2005 1:13 PM

Apologies for the mix-up, armadilloHD :( Unfortunately the FF theme would have alienated too many spriters who hadn't played the games.

I think that we should allow your sprite as a valid entry though as you did spend much time and effort on it, and you didn't know the theme had changed. :) The same goes for anyone else who didn't know and had already made a sprite...if anyone has any objections to this please PM me and don't clutter the thread with them, but I want to set things right. :)

Izzy September 1st, 2005 1:40 PM

I honestly do not see how hard it would be to go to google, type "final fantasy <insert number here>" in google image searches @[email protected]

Well... anyways. Super Heroes is a nice theme.. good break from all the mont themed ones. :X

Ionem September 1st, 2005 1:53 PM

What the ****? Changing the **** topic because some people can't use google?

I don't play Final Fantasy. I don't like Final Fantasy. I don't consider it a real RPG. But still, who has honeslty never even heard of it? Especially here, at a site based on games.

I don't have the time to make a new sprite, and while I do know that it will be accepted, I really don't think that it's right to completely change it.

Why not change the theme to Popular Console RPGs or something instead of superheroesp, whish is way too far from the original. Hell, it's too late now, but wouldn't simply broadening it have been better?

At least put FF in parentheses in the thread after the theme, so people don't get congused and think that I'm an idiot for turning Exeggutor into Cloud.

Forest Grovyle September 1st, 2005 2:16 PM

In a situation like this it's virtually impossible to please everyone, and changing the theme for a third time would only confuse and possibly annoy people. Apologies to those who already made FF-based sprites - as I've said, they will be accepted as well if you've already made them so your work doesn't go unnoticed.

I think it's best and safest to stick with the current theme so that everyone knows what it is, and continue from here. If you'd like to ask any questions, PM me, but please try to keep further discussion of the theme out of this thread as it could lead to flaming.

Allstories September 1st, 2005 2:30 PM

I finished my entry. It's obviously inspired by Calvin & Hobbes. Here it is again for those of you who don't feel like going over to the other thread.

Aww :( I was going to do Calvin in his stupendous man outfit.. he's so cool @[email protected]

Allstories September 1st, 2005 3:00 PM

NO. SHUT UP. You're not allowed to make me feel guilty anymore.

Izzy September 1st, 2005 3:07 PM

I'm not allowed? Aww... but it was so fun.. :(

*pokes ideas*
I still don't know what to do.. :P

armadilloHD September 1st, 2005 3:08 PM

I must say, you got his style like a bullseye 5 thumbs up! ...

Dragon-Chan September 1st, 2005 4:27 PM

My entry (yes, another morph entry) is based on a superhero MMORPG char of mine.

-Mouth is agape- Aw man, that makes mine look like roadkill. That's just awesome..

Hehe, it's a good thing I made my sprite after the topic was changed. If you wanna see him, go ahead and check the entry thread. His name is Super-cross. ^^ Hehe, corny.

Alex_ September 1st, 2005 4:57 PM

I love Allstories' entry. XD

armadilloHD September 1st, 2005 4:59 PM

FG said that entries made before the change are excepted too.

Ionem September 1st, 2005 6:37 PM

Thanks for editing the line about how it was previously final fantasy. That's all I wanted, just do people don't think I don't know what a superhero is. :x

By the way...

http://l-u-k-e.co.uk/images/stupendous.gif

http://www.3dmm.net/image/stupendousmansprite.gif

I don't know, but it looks like the picutre was justt aken and pixelated. I really don't want to seem like a **** or anything, and it is an awesome job, but still, should that really be allowed in a sprite contest like this against people that are doing more original things or actual sprite edits?

Edit:

Upon further inspection, it does look like the image may have only been used for reference, but still...

Meh. Maybe it's just me. :x

Allstories September 1st, 2005 6:46 PM

Even if I used an image as a reference, I fail to see how it's anywhere near as unoriginal as recolors or edits of existing Pokémon sprites, which account for about 90% of the sprites on this site. Sorry, you don't get to out-complain me.

EDIT: Ah-ah. I see the confusion. Yes, I used the picture for reference, but did it completely from scratch in Paint with lots of help from the curved line tool.

Hahaha I love that tool so much...

gothsinn23 September 2nd, 2005 5:02 AM

xD Me too. Though..I never used it when I made mine. I did mine entirely from scratch, using a R/S Heracross sprite for reference.

Dragon Lover September 2nd, 2005 5:15 AM

Allstories that sprite makes mine look like a recolour of a Pikachu from a person who only uses default colours =P

I made one and it's entirely based on body pats from the games, Flannery's leags, Brawly's hair due [Couldn't resist XD], guitar dudes head, lance's cape and arms and Normans body. I might make another one, possibly my secong scratch sprite since they look awsome...

Oreos and cheese don't match.

Ionem September 2nd, 2005 6:18 AM

I just think that a spriting contest should be limited to sprites...

(and don't give me bull**** about sprites can be any size. Yeah, they can, but things like that aren't sprites.)

Really, don't get me wrong. I'm not going to deny the awesomeness of that. Especially now that I see that the picture was only ued for reference. I like it a lot and I respect your work. I'm not a totally bad guy. ;)

But, I dunno, I mean, to a spriter like me, I see making huge images using the curved line tool and stuff as not fair to those of us who actually draw the ting, zoomed in 8x, with the pencil tool, going pixel by pixel. I mean, isn't that the essence of spritework?

I've noticed that lots of you people here deny that pixel art and spriting can be different. You're both wrong and right. Spriting is a form of pixel art, and as such, pixel art can often be seen as spriting. But really, actual spriting is getting into the nitty-gritty and not using any sorts of "tools".

Meh, whatever. I'm probably just in a grumpy mood. :\

pikafirefight September 2nd, 2005 6:32 AM

ionem sprites are pixel art, how many times does any person have to say that on this site, ADH and DP said it ADH even has a topic on the subject and it is stickied, i do my pixel-arts pixel by pixel with a reference, mine look good anyway, i use the fill tool only

Anna-chan September 2nd, 2005 6:49 AM

*stays out of that argument*

Anyways.. I entered my sprite in... Power Rangers count as superheroes right?? I mean.. they save the world.. >_>

gothsinn23 September 2nd, 2005 6:58 AM

Hehe, I guess they do count. xD

Mine may be a form of pixel art (though, pixel art is a form of spriting), but I never used the curved line tool at all. I zoomed in and made random shapes just to plot out the image, and then perfected it from there. The only things I used were a heracross sprite (as reference), the eyedropper thingy, and the pencil tool.

Allstories September 2nd, 2005 7:01 AM

Ionem, sprites and pixel art in general are equally as capable of being made with tools and such. There are some people hardcore enough to make dazzling pixel art stuff using individual pixels. Check out this other site I sometimes go to: http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/default.asp

Jaybob September 2nd, 2005 11:30 AM

enough with the arguments lol they are all superb so far it is gunna be a hard choice when I pick the winner

gothsinn23 September 2nd, 2005 2:09 PM

Superb? Wow, I never thought mine would be included in that category. xP

Jaybob September 3rd, 2005 12:59 AM

And able to leap tall buildings while fighting off a Charizard..

I salute you, what he says is true, spriting is a form of pixelart, pixelart ISN'T a form of spriting, there for they are differant

Jaybob September 4th, 2005 3:55 AM

is this argument going to go on all month!?

DarkPegasus September 5th, 2005 8:26 AM

Yeah anything bigger than a gba screen I don't consider a sprite!

I just wanted to shut him up about that "Limit"

I agree. Yeah I'm argueing too =P

Sprites can be any size they want. Sprites are a form of Pixel Art as Pixel art creates them. A few people prefer smaller sprites some prefer larger.

Yeah thats my $00.01 in it =P

I personally like my smaller sprite better than my Pixel Art, mostly 'cause I'm a fan of smaller sprites =P

~DL~

DarkPegasus September 6th, 2005 9:04 AM

Nice going armadilloHD you gave me a link to a forbbiden page? Fine and then this is a sprite:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y22/Shuko/captain_clefairy.png
(made by shuko)

pikafirefight September 6th, 2005 9:10 AM

its forbidden to you not to me though, and thats pixel art by shuko

Jaybob September 7th, 2005 1:01 PM

well yeh but shuko might have given him permission. in which case he is allowed and it is a nice sprite

DarkPegasus September 9th, 2005 1:06 PM

What no I am not entering that for Shuko! Sheez... And that is a sprite not a pixel art.

O and thanks for da bad rep.

Avatar September 9th, 2005 1:39 PM

Ok it's rather pointless how you keep arguing about sprites.
A sprite is a pixel character, preferably in 8, 16, or 32-bit. They are fairly common, and are used in games such as Rockman/Rockman X etc.
That's really all there is to sprites.

Allstories September 12th, 2005 6:22 PM

ALERT. The last entry in the contest isn't even a sprite.

true, as they can be as big as a TV screen( referance to older consoles here) but spriting is only a form of pixelart, like cubism is only a form of art, it doesne''t make all art cubism

Esupio September 14th, 2005 1:04 PM

what the heck is going on

the last 2 entries WTF

Allstories September 14th, 2005 4:53 PM

THE SKY IS FALLING

A challenge would be nice, guys. I like to win, but not if everyone else doesn't even try.

gothsinn23 September 14th, 2005 5:30 PM

Well..I tried. Super-cross was my first custom..I just enter the contests for fun.

Well I can't decide between powerpuf girls or some custom hero XD

~JapaneseWolf September 16th, 2005 7:37 PM

do your own darkpegasus try it. i did mine in paintshop pro.

gothsinn23 September 17th, 2005 7:07 PM

DarkPegasus, I recommend you try a custom. Customs are fun to make. You have no restrictions, and you aren't limited to the 'how-it's-supposed-to-look' mindset. With customs, you can make it however you like. But if you are concerned about difficulty level, then custom might not be what you want to do. Anymoo, that's just MO.

Paintshop Pro? Man, I just use MSPaint. xD

Esupio September 18th, 2005 1:05 AM

fweee same here just my paint bust ¬¬

Budgie_boy September 20th, 2005 3:43 AM

This may have been asked already but what about your own superhero characters can you post your own designs of superheroes that you made?

If so then I'll post mines up right away.

Allstories September 20th, 2005 10:44 AM

No! How could you even consider being original?

(I was actually being sarcastic. To answer your question, yes, feel free to make your own superhero)

Jaybob September 20th, 2005 12:16 PM

yes you do get to make your own BB cant wait to see your entry

Arcanine Fan 101 September 20th, 2005 12:19 PM

I entered my Elvis Superhero.(blushes)

gothsinn23 September 20th, 2005 12:38 PM

W00t, now we've got some rising competition. Super-cross loves competition. xP

Arcanine Fan 101 September 20th, 2005 12:52 PM

I just can't wait for the results to come in.

DarkPegasus September 27th, 2005 11:56 AM

So what do you guys think of my entry?

Sylphiel September 30th, 2005 8:17 AM

Alright...as it's the end of September, I went ahead and closed the entries thread. If anybody else had an entry for the contest...sorry, you're out of luck by now. :P

Allstories September 30th, 2005 10:44 AM

Who's running the October contest? Because if possible, I'd like to do it, since I think I'd be capable of making it not suck.
