A [to-be] laptop newb -- with a dopey question

Okay, first of all, all you computer geeks [X3 and that be a good thing] probably have one straight-up answer to this. See, I've been thinking about getting a laptop. But I have NO idea which company to buy from, or what to buy. I need wireless internet, and I need something a little on the small side. Any suggestions? ^^;

Batesymon October 21st, 2005 6:00 PM

Not terribly sure. EBay may or may not be a good place to get them.

Yameneko549 October 21st, 2005 6:06 PM

Ebay? no...

I'd suggest a Dell if you want to buy over the phone or online, or an eMachines if you're going to buy in-store.

Eon-Rider October 22nd, 2005 6:02 AM

It depends on what country you live in... where do you live?

PichuSecretBase October 22nd, 2005 6:07 AM

Dell definatly. They're *pretty much* the best PC company hands down.

Linoone October 22nd, 2005 6:13 AM

well, my suggestion is Dell or Vaio, dell makes good laptops, and Vaio makes the smallest ones(vaio notebook), and good too, so choose*faints*

wakachamo October 22nd, 2005 6:15 AM

Either Dell or HP. I highly recommend the HP Pavilion dv1000, which is quite good.

Arcanine October 22nd, 2005 9:21 AM

If it was me I'd go with the HP dv1000 (two of my cousins are going with that one) or the more powerful the HP dv4000 (it's what I got, and it's a sweet laptop). They are both well priced (mine was $1,400, but I did get lots of stuff on the computer.

Ummm...Dell is known for HD problems D:

Anyways~ I'd still go with Dell, HP, or Vaio. Those are probably the best. You'll want WiFi for sure...possibly BlueTooth.

IMO, look for 512 MB of RAM at least.

Batesymon October 22nd, 2005 1:31 PM

Dell has an awful lot of problems. >>

Get a HP, they're pretty good. An 8 year old HP handheld and still running, I have. :p

wakachamo October 22nd, 2005 1:35 PM

Well, you might as well go for HP XD. Instead of having a desktop, I have an iPAQ rx3715 Pocket PC, which works just fine XD, and my mother has an HP Pavillion dv1000 which never had any problems with it. Also, like Arcanine said, the dv4000 is another very good option XD.

pokejungle October 22nd, 2005 1:40 PM

I don't like HPs much~ My last HP desktop had to be replaced three times before we got one that worked -.-;

We've switched to Gateway now~

Morkula October 22nd, 2005 3:25 PM

Gateways are absolute and utter crap, from my experiences and from what I've heard.

For laptops, Dells and HPs are supposed to be very nice. Mine's a Dell Inspiron 9300, and I love it. Haven't had any trouble with it at all.

Any reputable computer brand (ASUS, ACER, IBM, DELL, HP etc.) should be just fine. You'd be looking for something branded with the Centrino mark, which gets you 802.11b connectivity with a Pentium-M processor and one of the approved Intel chipsets. As for small side, just choose one of the ultraportables. I'd recommend specific models, but I'm not certain what price point you're looking at. I've heard good things about DELL notebooks, although I'd never buy a desktop from them.

Well, to be honest if all you want it for is the wireless internet then get a cheap i-book(not a powerbook)with wi-fi. The only reason I'm saying this is because of the viruses even though Apples are getting more popular it has way less viruses out there than windows.
In the end it's all up to you.

My brother's HP is faulty <_<;;; It's been crappy from the day we got it.

Geometric-sama October 23rd, 2005 4:20 AM

It depends on the model as well. Some are better and more reliable than others.

Well like JA said, it depends on the model or even the computer itself. We've had this desktop, 2 or 3 years and it still runs really well (if it wasn't for the spy/ad ware from IE it would be as good as the day we got it), and it's an HP. Same with my dad's laptop (HP again) runs as good as the day he got it (the hard drive is a bit small, but that can be fixed) and again like 2 years old. We've had Dells, HPs, Compaqs and I've found that HPs are better (that's why we own 2 digital cameras, 3 printers, 2 laptops and 1 desktop all from HP).

Esupio October 24th, 2005 12:11 PM

I'm using an IBM thinkpad
its my dads work computer yeah but its decent
good firewall's and stuff

Geometric-sama October 24th, 2005 11:45 PM

In terms of printers, scanners etc., I prefer Canon, Andy :P. However, if it's between companies like HP and Dell, HP (which also puts out the Compaq brand now, since they bought it a few years back) is far superior.

And "good firewalls" have nothing to do with the brand. They're what you install afterwards.

We've had a Canon before. It was ok, but for printers I like Epson, they print better than HPs. But my dad liked the speed of our newest printer and liked how it could scan/copy/fax so he got it. And the sad thing is, we done got an HP scan/copy/fax printer thing. XD

IBM thinkpad is ok if you want to keep stuff safe (I think it's that one with the finger print thing). But they cost a lot and the finger print thing isn't needed unless you're working for some big company that doesn't want data loss.

Geometric-sama October 26th, 2005 4:28 AM

Epsons have awesome quality, but they're also awesomely expensive. XD

No, IBM ThinkPad is just the general brand for their notebooks. There might be a model with fingerprint recognition, but it's probably really expensive o_O
