Text Bubbles, or Text under panel?
Debate time.
Continuing the debate in Harison's thread. So it doesn't spam up his thread. |
Speech Bubbles, why? Because not only is it the way comics were meant to be, but they look better and you have more focus on the pictures in the panels than if you had text under pictures.
Not to mention they look better if used properly. |

Hey put a voting poll as well. then well see which one is better.
|
Hard to say... but I'll have to say speech bubble, sometimes they fill up too much of the screen though.
|
Yeah a voting poll would help, I choose under panels
|
I think it depends on the narrative technique you use. If the comic is very dialouge-heavy then speech bubbles are definitely the way to go as it is annoying as heck to keep shifting your eyes between the text panels and the pictures to see who's saying what and to whom. But if you like to take more of a storyteller approach to it then panels are the way to go as they won't clutter up the frames. Myself, I find speech bubbles preferable.
|
Some people like to put the text under the panels, they find it hard to put text in bubbles.
Other people use bubbles, they have no problem at all fitting the text in the bubbles. I say that both of them are fine. |
I think there should be another option for people who are unsure.
|
So far its atie. I see there are others that like text under the panel.

I do agree with JC here, another option would be ideal

Well I see that somethings here. Well I love how others put the Speech Bubbles and I love the Teachy TV and I don't know how many times I told Daviku that I'll be using Speech bubbles on my comic as the story goes on. So I won't vote just yet.

example, this is a comic, a real comic, what's that I spy?...SPEECH BUBBLES, lemme guess, you lot are now gonna e mail Marvel, DC etc and tell them speech bubbles suck right? |

Hm...that is really hard to say. I think...that I'll go with...neither. The situation varies, just like Alter Ego said. So, I'd have to say that when the approach calls, use Speech bubbles, but when you want more story, use Text under panel. I have used mainly text under panel, being a fan-fic writer, but I think that speech bubbles are what make a comic a comic and not a story book.

Speech bubbles are for comics, text for fanfics. Speech bubbles look more organized and make it seem more like a comic instead of a fanfic. Plus, there isn't a lot of appealing, fancy stuff you can do with text-under-the-panels. TUTP (text under the panels) distracts your attention from the comic and makes you focus on the words instead.
|
Speech bubbles! Geez, when you put it under the panel your just being lazy. If you don't want a speech bubble to take up so much space, don't make a friggin huge dialouge!

Your point in speech bubbles taking up too much space fails, newer comics have panels in varied size (depending on the speech bubbles and the pictures), why don't you try and do it the way comic authors do? A good example would be the PPG Doujinshi http://bleedman.snafu-comics.com/?strip_id=0 |

I don't think some one made it like we do comics(or you), but it does look good, but it has more space for bubbles.
|
My reasons for liking text under panels:
#Lots of space - more text means the reader can understand what's going on. #The reader can see all of the pictures fully. No text covering parts of the pictures. #Order - the reader can read all the text in the correct order without getting confused, no more: "which bubble do I read first??" #Different colours can be used for different characters, not only does this help the reader, but it can look very good too. #Frames can be put around the text to make it more decorative and nice to look at. Don't get me wrong, speech bubbles ar great too, one of the best examples of a comic using speech bubbles is PokeChow by blueguy. I just prefer text under panels ^_^ But I wouldn't want everyone's comics to use the same style, it would make everything boring. If different people use different styles, and try new things, the world will be a happier place ^_^ |
