Star Ocean: Till' the Ends of Time

Who has played it...I would have gotten it when it came out but I had doubts based on what others had said about it...however I bought it as a greatest hits and it has bonus features, maps, characters, and FMV's...all for a price of $20.

I think this lives up to the Star Ocean name...what are your reactions to this game?

***SLIGHT SPOILER***

The plot is this, the main character is at some kind of mall with I think his girlfreind and he likes playing Virtual Reality games and stuff like that...anyways he persuades his "girlfreind to play with him when the eintire planet and one other planet are under attack by a federation group and they are forced to evacuate...they end up on a under-develped planet and he has to apply the UP3 rules and guidlines...

Anyways the plot is quite good if not impressive.

And if you have a PS1 I strongly recomend you pick up SO: The Second Story(AKA the first one.)

-_- You call that a spoiler? Reading the back of the box tells you all of that.

Annyway, I had some spare change left after buying some clothes so I bought this on Saturday. The game is freakishly long. I'm on my 8th hour and I'm only up to the Kirlsa Training Facility. Two of those eight hours were spent running around in here. >.< Every fricking thing looks the same so I gave up.

And I thought the voice acting sucked.

Do you have the key...the locked door is on the 3rd level or the "Prison Level" yeah I ran around for about an hour before I found it but at least I leveled up. Your kidding the voice acting is different but it doesn't suck its kind of mellow...kind of reminded me of Silent Hill 2 and 3.

Yeah, let me tell you something about SO3. Unless you're using the Strategy Guide (which is a dictionary in size), you're gonna get lost really easily. That's one of the two drawbacks of the game. Some of the dungeons are so huge, that you'll spend hours on end just figuring out how to complete them. But if you explore every little nook and cranny, you can get bunny statues which help improve the party's speed. (Just sell off the extras, since the effects don't stack.)

Spoilers Below

The story of Star Ocean 3 is something special compared to previous ones. It starts similar. You're a member of the Federation who finds yourself stranded on a medievil planet that's in the middle of their version of the Crusades.

From there though, it gets Star Trekkish, as you're constantly pursued by various types of people, from medievil armies to bizarro versions of the Romulans. Oh, and your character has some sort of... power... whatever... By the way, you're still on Disc 1.

Anyway, just when you think you've got the main villain and true plot ironed out, you're thrown for yet ANOTHER loop! And with a new comes a new enemy that is really awesome and would've been fine the way it was.

But Square Enix had to throw that last twist into the mix. Now, I won't spoil it, but I'll say that like many RPGs out there, the final twist in this game was a huge letdown. It almost made me want to stop playing the game (the last twist was THAT frustrating). But I didn't, and found that the story tried to salvage itself from that last twist. I have to give it that. Unfortunately, the final twist in the story was unnecessary and made the story leading up to it feel like a big waste of time. Now don't take that as a sign to quit playing the game. I promise the plot gets back to better from there.

Other than that though, it was an excellent game, and even with those two drawbacks, I'd recommend this game to ANY gamer in a heartbeat. The battles are fast-paced, and the Item Creation will not only eat up a good chunk of time, but it'll prove essential to anyone hoping to play this game to completion.

Where can I get SO 3 or is it the same game? Yeah the maps are big, but the only time I ever got lost...at least so far is at the Kirlsa Trainins Facility and once more in the Mountains of Barr.

By the way do you get to go back to Vangard III cause I think there was a spot where I could destroy something however you don't get it until later in the game. I am on "Chapter 3"...

Also do you have any Gameshark codes like for getting 500 Chain Battles in on battle or something like that...right now my highest Chain is at 183 or something like that...I mainly want to get all the Batttle Trophies...and I don't want to get HP, money, or streangth codes...

Sato: To each their own. The things that ruined the game's otherwise good script for me was the bad voice acting: spotty, not very well done (I pratically laughed when Fayt screamed "WHO AM I!?!?!" after his power wiped out that Vendeeni ship), and not very well timed (which can go under spotty was well actually...). The Japanese original was much better when it came to the voices. The "bad" voice acting only applied to the main characters though, especially Fayt. I thought that the best voice would probably be the one for the Captain of the Aqualie and a few other minor plot characters.

SBaby: Yep. I hated the **** maps. They're not very good at clarifying where you're supposed to go. It's like "Go to that 10 story maze and find the boss" and when you get to the top you find out the door is locked. Then you run all the way through looking for the **** key...*ahem* Kirlsa Facility...even though it was only 2 floors.

The last twist? You mean like...the sphere thing? I didn't think it was that big of a twist. And I thought the fact that mere data could materialize itself was a bit...odd...special powers/data or not...it's still just suppose to be mere data. They should've just left it as "parallel universe" and nothing more.

The Owner of the Sphere was introduced kinda randomly. He didn't serve much of a purpose other than to be the one that everyone gets pissed at.

And as for the battle system, it's kinda awkward and slow when you first start out since you don't have much to choose from for skills. But it picks itself up pretty quickly once you gain a few levels.

And I've noticed that leveling is almost redundant...

Sato again: Chain battles? You mean Bonus Battles? I can't really help you with "getting 500 bonuses instantly," but I can reccomend using the "One Hit Fills Battle Gauge" code and just fighting 500 easy battles.

EDIT: Question: After I defeat Ethereal Queen, can I fight her again afterwards? I know I can fight Luther again (and according to a GameFAQs guide, I can also fight Gabriel in the Maze of Tribulations again, but I haven't tried yet). I'm on the 200th floor right now and I was jsut wondering.

And those **** Scootie thingies are kicking my ***. They're impossible to hit; fricking micro sized things.

SBaby November 10th, 2005 11:16 AM

What I mean is the main characters didn't take it as hard as everything else they've been going through up to this point. I mean, when Neo found out that his world was made up, it took a while for him to come to terms with that.

Spoilers

Fayt and the others not only find out that their world is a huge VR game, but also that they're made up characters as well. I'd think they'd be a bit more distraught about it. They were just like, 'oh, really?'.
