Cat = Anime?

(Wasn't sure where to put this. "Other Anime", or "Other Chat". I figured "Other Chat", though.)

A picture I found:

http://media3.guzer.com/pictures/smiling_cat.jpg

This picture makes you think, doesn't it? I mean; I think I'm beginning to understand where Japan got their ideas for Anime and Manga. This cat is in "Kawaii mode". Upside down "U" shaped eyes, and a cute mouth, an easygoing face, etc.. I once read somewhere; that in order to draw Anime or Manga, one should observe a cat's face. Because its eyes are a lot like those commonly seen in Japanese animation and comics. Even the general shape of the head, and the way it's slightly tilted to the side stirs memories. (I don't think this picture was edited, but I could be wrong.)

Still, this is the sort of picture that would immediately get any Anime-Otaku thinking; "Anime expression, Anime expression!". What do you guys think?

Fls4eva November 13th, 2005 12:53 AM

Yep.. I suppose they really got the expression from the cats.. The cat's really kawaii...

Kylie-chan November 13th, 2005 1:11 AM

Actually, given that this is to do with animé and manga as an art form, I guess, it can go in OA&M. O_o;;;;;;

Frazzler November 13th, 2005 4:20 AM

wow. anime spawned from cats. cat people. wow

Chairman Kaga November 13th, 2005 7:15 AM

That picture looks photoshopped to me. It's not physically possible for a cat to be able to make those expressions.

Sailor Taurus November 13th, 2005 7:54 AM

cats are awsome.thats why they have cats in many anime like fruits basket"kyo"

punkhobbitqueen November 15th, 2005 3:56 PM

yeah that pic does look like it was edited. i've been around cats my whole life and not once have i seen a cat be able to make a face like that.

Crystal Clair November 15th, 2005 6:16 PM

I dont think it was edited, my aunt's cat used to do it all the time, then again it was a Siamese cat. (btw, the poor kitty passed away)

Cherrim November 15th, 2005 6:48 PM

o_o Definitely shopped. Those eyes are not natural. <__<;; It looks kinda creepy to be honest.

Though you may be right about the rest of your post, though. To some extent, the expressions animals make do look fairly similar (but not as close as in that image), so it's not an unbelievable theory; I mean, inspiration has to come from somewhere. o_O;

Miharu November 16th, 2005 12:35 PM

Yes, it does look kinda creepy but it is still a kitty!!! :D

Oblivion Edgegirl Ayu November 18th, 2005 11:51 AM

Scary picture. O.o"
I don't think it's real, it looks pretty edited.

Saboten November 19th, 2005 3:59 PM

It kind of scares me o__O I think it's edited, though, you might never know...

Miss Reyna November 22nd, 2005 8:46 PM

I have to agree with Kaga and the others. I mean it good inspiration but the cat does looked edited. I mean you can notice the discolored spots on top of the eye so it look like something was change. Then there are other spots too. I mean it look kinda cute but it just I don't think it looks real. Nice pic thougth.

Pete November 30th, 2005 12:43 PM

That looks shopped. Though I think manga characters bear resemblance to cats too.

BrainWave December 7th, 2005 10:54 PM

Have you watch garfield the movie? Garfield's animation is a camera trick, and the could be the same thing to that happy-smiled cat. Here, take a look at thesehttp://www.movie-poster.ws/movies/wallpaper/cartoon/garfield/garfield_th.jpg http://images.movie-gazette.com/albums/G2/thumb_garfield-3.jpghttp://images.movie-gazette.com/albums/G2/thumb_garfield-4.jpghttp://images.movie-gazette.com/albums/G2/thumb_garfield-5.jpg
Some looked real (including the last one), but they're all camera tricks, just like the kawaii kitty.

Hizuara December 8th, 2005 2:05 PM

Awww.. What a cute cat!

I have to agree with everyone else though, and say that it does look manipulated. The mouth is blurred around the edges and the eyes are too bent..

But you've got a point about cats being similar to anime characters. The size of the eyes in proportion to the head, for one thing. And profiles are typically short and kind of level, like a cat's.. *nods*

And some facial expressions as well. I think that picture is edited, but I've seen cats make 'smiling' faces before.. like when they're clicking at birds and stuff. And my cat smirks all the time.. he winks too. But of course, he might just be weird =/

Wolf_Goddess December 10th, 2005 1:56 PM

OMG! My cat makes the weirdest clicking noises when she watches birds! Its scary! >.<

Anyway, I do believe (though that picture is not real) that cats have a lot of influence in anime and manga. I mean, if you watch a lot of anime, at least half have a cat in it, whether it being a small part or large. I think the Japanese are in love with cats! ^.^

manga-ka December 10th, 2005 2:13 PM

Yes that Pic is fake.Its eyes are too unatural.

I also agree with every that sayed anime is influened on cats.

Chikara December 18th, 2005 10:05 AM

Just looks fake too. Theres way too many off-color pixels in there for it to be real...
