viridian doubletongue December 26th, 2005 10:11 AM

I know...umm a little japanese. Generally fighting terms. It comes from learning Judo for 7 years. I also know the word tenka-ichi budokai. I can't read the japanese characters like kanji though.

Rai December 26th, 2005 10:14 AM

I know a few common words~ Like "Hello" or "Thank You" and "Sorry" etc.

Words like that~

Asura Nirosuki December 26th, 2005 12:46 PM

Sadly no. Im still in learning~

Natsuki December 26th, 2005 12:52 PM

I know only a couple words...well, only two of them I'm absolutely positive that the definition is correct. XD They are the words for "hello" and "cute"...I do wish I knew more about their language, the entire Japanese culture truly fascinates me. <33 *wants to live there once she grows up* :3

coachwhipneoship December 26th, 2005 2:47 PM

I got a 78-lesson CD set for Christmas that's supposed to teach you Japanese. ;)

Miyu-chan December 26th, 2005 3:19 PM

I can read a bit of kanji due to my knowledge in Mandarin Chinese. xD;

That's all. ;-;

Samurai X December 26th, 2005 10:36 PM

I don't know Japanese except for the simple words like kawaii, other than those common simple words I really don't know Japanese.

Fls4eva December 26th, 2005 10:51 PM

I do know some japanese in romanji..

Crystal Clair December 26th, 2005 10:54 PM

I actually know a lot of Japanese. I've been learning very slowly but steadily through the last three years. I've been doing it slow because I want to enjoy every bit of the language before all the fun of learning is gone.
I know all of hiragana (although it took me a while) and all of katakana except for the extinct ones. I also know over 50, yes fifty kanji and about half I know how they sound. I also regularly watch Japanese Pokemon episodes, know common phrases, say Japanese words and sing Japanese lyrics regularly, and attempt to translate Pokemon songs into English
That may also be the reason I have so much fun on Pokesho.
There's still a long way to go, but I love everything about this language (except for misunderstandings like kawaii and kowai (scary), that one can get pretty pretty messy)
And I got so into Nihongo that I even did that thing with my computer where I can type a Japanese syllable and it turns into kana! (but it doesn't work on Mozilla for some reason so I have to cut and paste from wordpad)
Just for the fun of it, a few Japanese words along with their hiragana or kanji equivalents.
yana kanjii - bad feeling - やな かんじい (it's what Team Rocket says when they blast off, in Japan)
sonansu - so it is - そうなんす (what Wobbufet says in Japan)
kirei - pretty - きれい
some useful ones:
aishiteru - I love you - 愛してる
I dont have time to write the kana down for these bad boys
baka - stupid
shimatta -dammit!
ecchi - perverted
mizu - water
and a joke in early AG of Pokemon
hinoko - Ember
kinoko - mushroom
(disclaimer: I may be wrong on some words or expressions because I'm teaching myself by the internet, Babelfish and my Japanese dictionary. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

:D Ommmmmmmg~ You're just like me. xD Except for the studying on your own part.

I studied on my own for a year and now I'm taking it as a FL at my High School.

What's sad is that even knowing 50 kanji, 3rd graders know more than we do. ;;

Chikara December 27th, 2005 8:21 AM

I know some, but I couldnt carry on a conversation in japanese, unless I say 'baka' the whole time...XD

Mika December 27th, 2005 8:32 AM

kirei = beautiful

Kirai = to dislike

XD Just thought I'd point that out

Alex The Great Master December 27th, 2005 9:02 AM

I only know Sayonara means goodbye, and the N is the only one-letter figure in katakana that isn't a vowel. And, of course, that L and R is the same letter in katakana.

wakachamo December 27th, 2005 11:51 AM

Well, my Kanji sucks, but I know how to make sentences, but not enough to hold a dialog XD.

Mayl December 28th, 2005 3:43 AM

I know some japanese because I have to write to my pen pal who lives in japan and she doesn't know english much, so yeah.

QT Plusle December 28th, 2005 3:56 AM

yep, I speak a bit of japanese because my japanese friend taught me some.

Chiru December 28th, 2005 10:41 AM

I only know maybe 10 or 15 words, and they're just things like neko = cat, arigatou = thank you, kirei = beautiful, shiroi = white, etc. So it's pretty useless in my case XD. The only real sentence I can say is "my name is ____". My grandpa is in the navy and he can sort of understand it though. Once he read part of a pamphlet that had been translated into Japanese out loud in English.

Suki December 28th, 2005 2:40 PM

I dont any any Japanese words and i cant understand it, but Japan is really cool. I want to visit it when Im older. Its kawaii! I just read above and find out it meant cute XD

Cherrim December 28th, 2005 10:47 PM

Well...I can read both hiragana and katakana since those are just plain easy. (Just memorise them and you're set...seriously, anyone can do it.) Sadly, my vocabulary isn't up to par with my reading...so I can tell you what it says, but I won't be able to tell you what it means. XD; I can read about 100-150 kanji, give or take a few, but when it comes to actually writing them...I don't know nearly as much. ;_;'

Speaking the language is a whole other story...I'm okay with the written language, but I'm not good at picking it up by ear or physically speaking it. Unlike French, I've only been learning Japanese in a school setting for about 2.5 years now--and even then it's only on Saturdays, so I don't get nearly as much practise as I'd like since there's no one I know who speaks the language natively other than my actual teacher and I don't have time for anime, etc. anymore...so that's definitely got a hindering effect on my fluency. :\ I probably couldn't get by if I were to go to Japan right now. I need a lot more practise before I could be at all useful in the country.

I'm currently in my last year of [high school] Japanese, so hopefully by the end of it I'll be better with translating it, etc. But for speaking, I'm going to have to either look into conversational lessons or find someone with whom I can speak on a regular basis or something to bump up that fluency level. <_<;; (I've never been really good at *speaking* other languages though...much better with the written language. XP)

I used to be oh-so-obsessed with all things Japanese and the like, but over the past few years that's worn off. I'm still interested, but I don't care nearly as much as I used to. I'm still planning a trip to Japan with a few friend at the end of high school but I doubt I'll live there or anything like my plans were a while ago. (I wanted to teach English in Japan but...that's so...clichéd. XD Plus, it'd involve kids and I hate them so...blah.)
