ZOMG! This is the hardest book in the world! :O
Have you ever read a really, REALLY hard book that keeps you running to the dictionary every few pages? Well, the only challenging book i've ever read is Moonwise, and it keeps my DAD running to the dictionary, but I can still read it. XD
It's pretty challenging. |
Don Quijote de la Mancha........in spanish. I can't say that I've ever had a large problem with any books in my own language. Most people today just have a sorely small vocabulary because they fear literature, not embrace it.
|
Acutally, I really haven't, or I don't remember it. I donno if it's because I have a larger vocabulary than I think I do, or if I'm not reading anything that's challenging enough for me. I'm a good reader. I always score insanely high when I take my reading tests.
The worst I can think of was the Scarlet Letter, which I read earlier this year, but it wasn't every three pages. It was a few in every chapter. We had to list words to look up anyway, as part of our grade. Speaking of which, I have a book I need to read sometime <3 And I want to write now too, darnit. |
Hmm...not to my knowledge, no. XD Although I normally read books of a higher reading level than I'm supposedly capable of, I only have to go to the dictionary a few times. Unless we're talking about some college level textbook...those can prove quite vexing at times. XD;

Nix. I seem to have a vocabulary abnormally wide enough not to run to a dictionary/encyc-
lopedia at the sight of mere words written inside of nothing more than a stack of papers binded together with what we call a "cover". |
I've never felt a personal obligation to look up a word in the dictionary while reading a book. It's not that I have some fantastic vocabulary, it's just that I can make assumptions as to the definitions of words based on the context in which they appear in the book, and even if I can't, it's never absolutely crucial that I understand a particular word. I can still get everything else.
|
Same as Allstories here, but perhaps the hardest book I've ever read in my whole life is The Catcher in The Rye. It's sometimes difficult to understand, but the main character in the story seems to be crazy for some unknown reason...
|
Les Miserables, unabridged, in French. 1000 pages of gory Victor Hugo French.
|
From what I've read, definately 명심보감. A series of books written in ancient chinese (I'm referring to the symobls completed by the Han Dynasty) text;; It's not just the text really. I sometimes forget that I have to read right to left, downards; and that really messes things up.
|
The Qu'ran was hard to read when I studied it for my Religious Education class.
Old Arabic symbols are too hard... I gave-up after page one, and got a translated one instead. |
I'm bad at reading 90% of all book that are more than 1000 pages long. I hardly ever read so I'm not used to some words.
|
The only challenging books I've read are the lord of the rings trilogy. It's written slightly different & it explains things as much as it can & it was a miracle that I finished it all.
|
the hardest book i ever read was Eldest by Christopher Paolini. There was too many hard and made-up words. Funny thing is, i read a book written in Runic a lot easier than Eldest.
|
Great Expectations by Dickens
Not that it was hard, I just couldn't read more than 2 pages in an hour, for fear I would quickly fall asleep and my insomnia would be cured =D |

Those books were evil... >< |
As a matter of fact we just finished ATOTC, hard to understand probably because my interest in those kinds of books is blah, but it was actually a really good book, <3 the final line.

Maybe the next books they shove down our throats will be tolerable =/ |
The Oddesey... by Homer...
That book made me want to burn it. Second is the Divine Comedy. |
I actually forgot two incredibly difficult books that I've read:
-20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne: there is so much antiquated scientific aquatic terminology that I have no idea what the narrator is viewing all the way through the book; I had to imagine generic fish and plants. -Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston: early 20th-century southern dialects. Use your imagination. Also, is was hard to read merely because I hated the plot. |
*agrees with Alan* Their Eyes Were Watching God wasn't hard... except for the accents and idioms they used. That made it so confusing. ><;
And Don Quijote... in Spanish... eww. Didn't understand a word of it, even after I saw it performed on stage. Besides those though, I can't really think of anything that difficult that I've read... |
Well... I did have trouble reading HP 5 a few years ago (it was the first English book I ever read and English isn't my first language, so what did you expect?)
|
Well.....Lord of the Rings was kinda hard. But only, because it had microscopic font and all the characters and places were confusing >.O
Also Little Women was also kinda hard. Another book with tiny font and I swear there was a semicolonel in every sentence. And Gone with the Wind was a hard book, too. |
Actually...no?
I've never really read a book I didn't understand...funny that |
Hmm.. Well, if I did try to read a book that I didn't understand, I probably put it down after a few pages and banished it to the very depths of my mind.
Therefore I do not remember if there ever was such a book. X3 |
The most challenging I've ever read is a book...I can't recall the name, but it was written in Japanese. The funny thing is, that's how I'm learning the language, by picking up a book I can't read and well, read.
|
Huckleberry Finn killed me. Not because of the hard words, but of the annoying spelling. <<;
Also, Guns, Germs and Steel for my APWH class. x.x; |
Les Miserables kinda did that to me, but mostly because I was not familiar with some of the different French terms. o___0
It's still my favorite book, though. Wicked did that to me a little too. XD Both are great books, though. |
No, not really. o.o I'm really advanced in reading. I was going to read Atlas Shrugged, but I didn't in the end. I'm sure it would have made me run to the dictionary.
|
The first challenging book I remember reading was Artemis Fowl. But, of course, after I've read it over a few times and read the dictionary a lot, I can understand it.
|
Well, the most challenging book I've ever read is The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. THere was a 45 page chapter that was so dang boring because they were just talking, takling tlaking so on! I am very literate so I could understand most of the wordss, but the boring talk was ticking me off BIG TIME! (BTW the appendix is about two-hundered pages long, talk about mammoth)
|
The hardest book i have read is Lord Of The Rings, its so big, and it took me ages to get in to it,
