Pokemon Stasis

http://tay.leafo.net/pokemon/banner.gif

Hey everyone... I was referred to this forum by someone saying I should post information about my pokemon game here... And since it's a Pokemon forum I thought why not... So here's some information regarding my Pokemon Fangame (made in GM6.1).

Official Site: http://tay.leafo.net/

------------------[ Story ]-------------------
Note: Quick story... This will probably change 200 times before it's final!

Aeons ago the pokemon world was at peace. Humans lived alongside Pokemon, and fighting was non-existant. Two beings existed among them to protect the harmony of the world; one human, Alar, and one Pokemon, Alier. Between them the balance of Human and Pokemon was protected. But as time passed Alar became greedy. He began to see Humans as superior and sought to use the Pokemon of the world for his bidding. Alier, in an attempt to protect the innocent eyes of the world, sacrificed himself, leaving behind only a stone statue of himself. In doing so, he destroyed Alar's existence, but the damage had been done. Humans had been tainted, and they had seen the power they could gain by manipulating Pokemon, and so began the era of capture, battle, and mastery.

Yet as time went by, Alier's influence cleansed the minds of Humans. Rather than battle for power, pokemon were used for friendship. Humans bonded with pokemon and saw themselves as equal, rather than superior.

But when all was at peace; the world began to crash down around them. Wild pokemon grew rabid, and attacked roaming trainers without remorse, and yet pokemon trained or bonded with by trainers seemed unaffected. Weather grew to the extremes, and legendary pokemon once thought extinct began to reappear.

And deep within the Ruins of Alier appeared a message for the world:

A key long past, separated at last, one dominated by the other. A sacrifice long forgotten, repaying only half the world.

Until at last the balance is reformed, harmony shall be found naught. Together must come the halves of the key to unlock the path to serenity... And lost must be the heir of Alar, and thus, Stasis shall be born.

One young boy begins his Pokemon journey soon to find himself faced with trials unseen by humans before. What appears to be a simple message turns into a quest to save the link between Humankind and Pokemon. As he follows the path of Alier he begins to find that his steps may not have been placed as they seem, and that the views of Alier and Alar may have turned askew.

Criticism, complains, questions, ideas, suggestions, and concerns are all welcome. If anyone has any neat ideas for a pokemon game, I'd love to hear them!

Sion February 1st, 2006 7:13 PM

As I've said on GamingW ( Holyflame. ) I'm really looking forward to this, IT looks better than most pokemon games I've seen here. And thats a great compliment. Becuase some of these games have huge potential. Good luck Ketay.

WOw this looks unbelieavable, good work, cant wait for a demo release until then keep up the good work!

mattgcn February 2nd, 2006 8:47 AM

Taking the less beaten path and going with Gamemaker is enough to make this game good in my eyes. And I love the plot you've given to it, very unique..

I'm glad I clicked on this thread. Cool names are definately a plus to getting attention ;)

Fid February 2nd, 2006 12:21 PM

WOW, this one looks great, is it true that Charizard and Venusaur are in the wild?

Despain February 2nd, 2006 12:51 PM

Hey Ketay, I saw this at GW. It's looking awesome as ever.

Silon February 2nd, 2006 3:01 PM

Wow. AMAZING. I love the battle system!

Tyler February 2nd, 2006 3:10 PM

This kind've looks like Booda's game with how the CBS is. But still this seems like it'll be a little better than his.

Haha, no. =P At the time I only had 6 pokemon added in, so I just randomly threw them all into the wild there to use for testing. Right now I have quite a few more (24) which is like a BILLION sprites... And I'm currently working on the move system... Ripping the animations from the game and then actually coding them into the game is so much work just for one... But yeah... It's highly unlikely that I'll have top level starters in the wild (though I'm still debating whether to have quests for the starters, or to put like bulbasaur and stuff in like the depths of "secret" areas/dungeons).

And @Everyone: Thanks for all the encouragement. And the battle system does look kind of similar to COL I guess... But I wanted to use a 320x240 screen and I really didn't want to sprite new menus and such so I had to window it. Hopefully it doesn't look too similar. x_x

Fl0W:HHGURU February 2nd, 2006 3:41 PM

all i can say is WOW, i cant wait to play this game...best ive ever seen on PC **gives you a cookie**

There is nothing wrong with having a similar system to that of CoL. I personally like the windowed system.

lightou February 3rd, 2006 4:06 AM

WOW !!
This game is amazing !
I like the Chipsets >>FRLG - Emerald<<
Bref, this game is very good ! Good luck ;)

Fid February 3rd, 2006 5:21 AM

This must be better than official games for sure, any demo soon?

Yuoaman February 3rd, 2006 9:05 AM

awsome dude dont give up,
ps where you get grass tiles

Ketay February 3rd, 2006 4:56 PM

Demo... I don't want to be typical and have a demo where all you do is walk around an ugly looking map... So it might be awhile before a demo... Especially since math homework has been taking like 2 hours a night, and I have Japanese Club and Art Club and Smudges to worry about afterschool every week... And I start driver's ed in a week and a half... But I'm trying my best. I don't do anything in my 6th period class, so I might be able to use that to work on it.

And... The grass sprites/animations I ripped myself... I think everything so far was ripped by me... And some (such as the grass on the ground) were editted a lot so that they work with the tiling system I made... And especially the inside house tileset... Had to make it so I could shape rooms more than squares and still have it look really nice... So that took a lot of editting and re-editting and it still doesn't look too great, but it's workable. =)

Fid February 4th, 2006 12:51 AM

Er... Forget what I said. Keep it up.

Doc February 4th, 2006 2:38 AM

Like on gamingw forum (like Sion/Holyflame, I'm Mod on this forum), I can only that this is one of the better fangame I have ever seen...You push me to work more and more...

[_DarkDragon_] February 4th, 2006 4:11 AM

wow, *salutes* you really were able to show people that Game Maker can be powerful if used correctly, nice work :D

Fid February 4th, 2006 12:53 PM

This game looks really awesome, I don't know how to explain it. WOW. I didn't slept the whole night when I saw those screens.

Ketay February 4th, 2006 4:03 PM

Okay, so I need some feedback on a gym system... In all the pokemon games so far there has been 8 gyms that you've had to go to in order to get to the elite four...

I was thinking of doing it so that there are about 16 gyms, and for the basic pokemon championship you'll only need 8. And rather than go to them in order, I want a little bit of freedom. It wouldn't be the freedom to where you could start the game and head for any gym you want... But that it would be possible at certain places to branch off and make your way to a certain town and get a badge there and get back on the main path, or maybe skip it and come back to it later (or not).

For this to work I'd have a system where gyms would have their basic pokemon levels... But as you collected badges "time" would pass so the gyms trainers and leader's pokemon would grow in level. That way if you skipped an earlier gym for later on, when you came back to it they wouldn't have level 8 pokemon there... This would also mean that the gyms you leave for last would have stronger pokemon (although not all gyms would automatically get stronger pokemon as you get a badge, since then the last gym would be uber powerful).

I was thinking of doing like 8 basic gyms, 4 challenging gyms, and 4 "elite" gyms. The 8 basic gyms would be the ones you would pass by on your main path through the game, such as in the older games; the challenging gyms would be a bit offroad... Such as you'd have to swim across to a standalone island, or to find a special HM allowing you to jump gaps to get to a different area; and the elite gyms would be things you'd have to do multiple quests to get to special places where they would have super strong pokemon.

Then, past the championship requiring 8 badges there would be more that would require you to get more and more badges until you had all 16. That way for you to do the better championships you'd have to do a bit of exploring, puzzling solving, and questing to achieve them.

Any suggestions to add onto this would be great. =) (I don't want the player to become a gym leader or anything though. =P)

Fid February 5th, 2006 12:09 AM

This idea seems to be great, I think it will be cool to make championships in any place like in Battle Dome, I think it will be pretty good.

Booda Sack February 5th, 2006 3:00 AM

This looks fantastic dude.
I have a question about the pp bar.
How does it work?
Do you have a pp that you share with all the moves?

I don't understand that thing too, I was going to ask that question.

Yeah, one thing I didn't like in the other games was there wasn't much strategy between the moves. You could always use the same moves the same amount of times and still have the other moves to fall back on. This time around they all share how much PP you have, so the more you have, the more you'll be able to attack. This will force you to use some balance between spamming strong moves, which will eat up your PP pretty fast, and keeping with the small moves, which you'll be able to get quite a bit in. And of course there will be Elixers and such to restore it, but you will won't be able to get by without using some strategy.

So just think of it more as a standard "MP" bar in a traditional RPG. I just felt it would add more depth to the battle system.

Yuoaman February 5th, 2006 3:38 PM

hmmmm, maybe i should try gamemaker
oh ya i did and im no good

awsome work Ketay

Mewtwo of the Darkness February 7th, 2006 1:25 PM

Yea, but the thing is i cant download pretty much any game because i have aol and i have it set to Young Teen 0.o THAT SUCKS!

Doc February 9th, 2006 2:19 AM

PP Bar...It's the first time i see a PP bar in a Pokémon game, its existence is logic in an RPG, like you said, but you are one of the first to made one. Good job.

Question : have you made Website for your game ? Or maybe will you make one ?

I have:

http://tay.leafo.net

It's nothing big and it has info on a couple of my other games too... But yeah.

Onyxrhapsody87 February 9th, 2006 10:42 PM

Gorgeous... What maker are you using? This surpasses a lot of fangames...

spike6958 February 10th, 2006 7:30 AM

i think you should have tournements like in pokemon colosseum where you win rare pokemon or iteams or even have more than one way to enter the pokemon league

DarkClown February 10th, 2006 8:14 PM

Oh My God...So Nice...And Your Logo Rocks!Very Creative.....Hope it turns out well....And it is made from sphere right?

[_DarkDragon_] February 11th, 2006 1:48 AM

no :x the icon shows Game Maker and he said it was made in Game Maker :)

Fid February 11th, 2006 11:00 AM

I got that Game Maker too but I will start working with it tomorrow or maybe today in late times.
Any new screenshots Ketay?

Ketay February 19th, 2006 9:01 PM

No update for awhile... Oops! ^_^ I got a little bit done... Some more attack animations... Etc. But not much due to last week was my first week of Driver's Ed and I had it for 2 hours everyday after school. =P

About the tournaments, I'm definitely going to have tournaments that are more like the TV show... Where you'll enter, along with a bunch of other trainers, and the trainers will mostly be random and will have random pokemon... And you'll win different stuff depending on where you place. I'll hopefully make it so that it will be hard to get 1st over and over.

I've decided that in the game you'll have two "rivals". Except I don't think I'm going to have them be random two people who will just challenge you to a fight every few gyms. =P They'll be brother and sister, and will hopefully have some part in the story. I mapped their house, and this is the second floor (they each have a room, blue for the boy, pink for the girl):

http://tay.leafo.net/pokemon/stasis_013.gif

Anyway... I still have work to do for tonight. ^_^ Just gotta map the professor's lab and I'll have the entire first town (Kobai) done! =D

I also had a problem with my cutscene sequence manager system, and I thought it was fixed, but now the problem is back, so I guess I'm going to have to spend another 10 hours trying to fix it. x_x

Ketay February 20th, 2006 9:21 PM

Yay, I got lots of work done today. Though, mostly editting some graphics and mapping and getting the town done, but it was still work! I even got a new screenshot of the Professor's lab... But to see it you'll have to go to my site (http://tay.leafo.net/) and check out the forums. ;) And while you're there you could even join and/or comment on it... You know you want to! (I have to shamelessly advertise the site somehow. =P)

Edit: Err... Double posting here isn't discouraged is it? x_x

Edit2: Oh, and here's a "different" kind of screen of the game.

Krazy_Meerkat April 7th, 2006 3:35 AM

I hope you haven't been discouraged with nobody posting. This looks like a wonderful game and it would be quite a shame to see it in the scrap heap like so many others before a demo.
Doing it with GM? You're quite brave. But that screenshot does make it look as easy (if not easier) to use than rmxp. Please post more screenies if you can :).

Ethreale April 7th, 2006 7:13 AM

Looks like an awesome game. I look forward to its completion.

Dawson April 11th, 2006 6:00 AM

Double posting is against the rules here but, meh, it was an update post.
The game looks awesome, the most impressive game I've seen here for a while. As Krazy said, you're brave for doing this in GM, the map maker is evil.

GMuser April 11th, 2006 8:49 PM

Wow, this has alot of similarities to my game- I need to step up my production rate. On that note I would like to say good work so far ;)

Toadsworth April 12th, 2006 8:07 AM

That looks fantastic!

Can i be beta tester, I worked about a year with game maker to make funny games :D and i know how to use it!

PM back plz...

Ketay April 15th, 2006 1:45 PM

Hmm... Might as well update you guys with what's going on.

Right now I have about 3 (maybe 4) projects I've been working on for awhile that I go back and forth with. I used to get bored and stuck on a game, so I'd give it up forever, but with projects I can switch back and forth, when I get stuck on one game I can switch to another and get past whatever stopped me from working on that one last time.

So yeah, after realizing that ripping and coding in every battle animation would be pretty much impossible (it took me like 2 days to do 5 or 6), I kind of switched back to working on my online text RPG.

However, before I ever go back to working on this, I'm going to need a way to not have to code in every battle animation. I was thinking of maybe having a generic move foward, slash, and with an icon of whatever element of the move is being used. So I only need about 15 battle animations. =/ As much as I'd like to have it professional and have all the animations, I know I'd never touch the game again if I knew I still had to get that done. =P

Smarties-chan April 16th, 2006 2:38 AM

It isn't often when you get to feast your eyes on such an incredible game.

The plot is very original, the mapping is just incredible, and the battle system looks amazing! ^_^ I love the PP system, I have always wanted the official games to have one like that, but I had no such luck...

I also like the fact that you didn't (or atleast you didn't say you had -or would) add too many meaningless things, such as day and night. I like Pokémon games being simple.

I have some criticism though. That battle background doesn't look too good in my opinion. The plants seem to be too close to eachother and they are lined up too neatly too. Try reducing the amount of the plants and scatter them all around the place instead. The sky also seems a little bit too bright, it's hard on the eyes and looks blurry.

But overall: this game looks very promising and I hope to see updates from you soon. Keep up the great work ~_^

Ketay April 18th, 2006 9:58 PM

Thanks a lot. =) The battle background is temporary though. I completely randomly just threw a bunch of stuff together in photoshop and copy and pasted it over and over to make it look like grass so that it was something I could live with for awhile until I actually got around to making backgrounds. So yeah, don't worry, that's not staying. ^^

If anyone could please comment on the battle animations thing... Just wondering whether it would really hurt it that much to have generic animations for each type rather than one per move...

Hopefully I can get back to work on this soon and get you guys some new screenshots. =)

GMuser April 19th, 2006 1:02 AM

It probably wont hurt too much- you could probably do it like in pokemon stadium, where flashes of the elements colour would represent an attack.

Krazy_Meerkat April 21st, 2006 1:25 AM

I ripped about 8 animations in 10 mins :/
I think the tackle animation is used in about 50 attacks lol :) Keep up the good work ^.^

GMuser April 21st, 2006 2:09 AM

There is a difference between ripping animations and using them straight up, and coding them in. If he ripped the animations and used them like that, then he would have to do it for every attack and for every pokemon combination- that would just be silly.

Ketay April 29th, 2006 5:02 PM

Okay, so I have a generic animation set up that is pretty boring and lame, but it uses a little icon based on the type of the move. The little icons are pretty cool though! ^_^ But now I can actually get on with actually making the game. I'm getting nearer to getting all the systems done and being able to actually MAKE the game, rather than programming in the systems. I do have the first tiny cutscene done as you wake up when you begin the game, but that's only so I could program the cutscene/sequence/message system. =D

Anyway, I'm going to make the pokedex now. I'm just hoping it doesn't turn out lame. I'll be using the same pokedex system as Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and not Firered/Leafgreen, because the FR/LG one sucked. =P But I think I'm going to be leaving some stuff out of the pokedex. For example, in the pokedex normally you can see the small sprite of the pokemon compared to a trainer, and also can hear the cry of it... But those are pretty much useless to most players, and would take too much work to add in, so I'm going to leave those out. Not sure about the AREA thing. I'm definitely leaving it out initially... But it wouldn't be TOO hard to code in (other than having to add the areas for all the pokemon separately, and every time I change them having to go back and change them in the file would take forever), but we'll see how it goes.

So yeah... We'll see how this pokedexing goes... And if it goes well I'll be back later with screens. (Probably won't be as easy as I'm hoping it will be. xD)

The Dash April 29th, 2006 5:10 PM

This looks really decent for a Gamemaker game!
For once someone actually has reflections moulded correctly it looks cool.

Hitman April 29th, 2006 11:54 PM

Nice job man.. you used GameMaker!! 9/10 !

Ketay April 30th, 2006 2:48 PM

Okay, so I wasn't able to get it done last night, but I got the basics done now...

http://tay.leafo.net/pokemon/stasis_015.gif

You can now scroll through them all, and holding scroll makes it scroll faster. The hardest part was that I have it in a window, so I had to make it so as it scrolled down, it only drew PART of the image, so that it wouldn't show up down outside the window, because the height of some of the pokemon would make it do that.

Still got some more to do, but it shouldn't be that hard. =)

ShadowKP1 April 30th, 2006 3:26 PM

Whoa! Sweet game you've got here. Nice screens and any plans for a demo date.

The Dash April 30th, 2006 4:12 PM

Wow! So its just like the Pokédex in the official games?

Ketay April 30th, 2006 4:47 PM

Yes. I'm trying to imitate pretty much everything from Ruby/Sapphire, except changing some things that I think could use improvements.

@FireKP1: No plans for a demo at the moment. Not sure how much I want to get in before I release a demo.

Krazy_Meerkat April 30th, 2006 8:39 PM

You're doing a great job ketay, keep up the good work ^.^

GMuser April 30th, 2006 10:26 PM

Nice recolour :) You should probably recolour and rename the "Start" and "select" buttons though, since they don't exist on the keyboard (also, the colour doesn't seem to match up as nicely as it could).

Well, the only thing that I DID recolor was the Start/Select buttons. The rest is default. But for some reason, the green and yellow is really ugly (but that's how it is in the game...) I'll be recoloring those though, and along with changing start/select (Thanks, I probably would have forgot that), I'll change the POKEDEX text because that is ugly. (Unless I can't find something that fits).

But I don't see why they used such ugly colors in the game. I guess it didn't matter because their's wasn't windowed. I probably could have used the one from Sapphire though... (I think I'm using the one from Emerald... Not sure... I keep switching back and forth for different stuff when I rip them.)

Rubypoke May 1st, 2006 2:10 AM

This game looks awsome. Game Maker eh, im trying to make a game on it.

Well done 9/10 by the looks of it. Can't wait for a demo. Battle System looks neat.

GMuser May 1st, 2006 2:15 AM

Ohhh, I never played emerald, only saphire an fire red- so I thought you recoloured the ruby/saphire pokedex. Personally I think it looks nicer than the ruby/saphire colours, it seems much fresher/cleaner.

Neo-Dragon May 1st, 2006 2:58 AM

Looks really good. You seem to be doing a great job. Is Pokemon Stasis your main concern or your other projects (you said you had other projects going right).

Your pokedex screenshot looks really good and your doing a great job (as I already said). Keep it up.

Ketay May 6th, 2006 5:01 PM

http://tay.leafo.net/pokemon/stasis_016.gif http://tay.leafo.net/pokemon/stasis_017.gif

Okay, so I've been working on the Pokedex a bit more. I editted the colors... And now they look a bit duller. I kind of like them, but I miss the brightness of the green. Although... The brightness clashed really bad... So I dunno. I also editted the data portion of the pokedex a bit... Changed the look of the description part, added type icons, and just moved stuff around overall. But yeah. =) I think that's good enough for now. Not sure exactly how I'll do the AREA thing... Will have to think about it.

And that circle where the footprint is... I think I'm going to put the pokeball and shiney icons in that space (rather than on top the pokemon), since the footprint idea seems pretty useless. Unless you wanted to memorize what the bottoms of each pokemon's feet looked like... But I don't see a point in that!

Oh, and ignore the bed in the background. Just a control object I need. Made it visible for testing purposes, forgot to reinvisiblize it. =D

The text colors look like they need changing a bit... So I'll probably do that. The yellow shadow on the left one, and the black text on the right kind of stands out a bit much.

Getting closer to actually having to map some more places and plan out the world. =P Then the screenshots will be less boring (Tired of the beginning town and the menu now. xD)

Wow, very very impressive. You've done a ton of work. Hmm ya know you have really good mapping skills ^_^. Nice how you used the light green dirt as a 'road' if you will. This game is definately worth a download later on, keep up the great work =3.

derksenm166, do NOT bump threads more than a month old. This thread hadn't been posted in since 2006!

Also, yuoaman, there's no need for that sort of post - it just acts as spam. Reporting is enough, thanks. :)
