How doest this plan sound for the second gym?

Hi, I am making my plan for the second gym, (I just started a new game)

I think I am going to train the evolution of Treecko to level 21-22 and then my Tailow to 20-21 and then my Mukihuta to level 20-21 also. How does that sound?:)

Charizard-Kun™ February 27th, 2006 3:28 PM

That iis a good plan. Its bette to start out strong.

Mr.Pokemon February 27th, 2006 3:37 PM

Okay yeah your right, i hate having to train like 25 levels before the Elite 4 ^_^'

It’s all right, although you only really need your Taillow for Brawly’s gym since it will sweep the opposing teams with Wing Attack. I’d just shoot for Lv. 19, maybe Lv. 20 at the most. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to level up even more before the 3rd gym.
The problem with Pokemon is that the games get ridiculously easy and boring if you train your Pokemon too much at the start.

Sounds like a good plan, although raising your pokemon to the highest level possible before doing against predetermined level trainers is probably the most sound idea... You're going to have to raise them at some point, you may as well do it early on.

It sounds good. A good training plan is nice to have before you fight gym leaders. The only problem I see is that you may train your pokemon too high and it will disobey you. YOu may not want to train them too high. I think that at level 17 or so they start disobeying you if it isn't your starter.

No, it’s determined by your badges, it’s been like that since Red/Blue. Get 2 badges for Lv. 30 Pokemon and below to obey you, get 4 for Lv. 50 to obey, get 6 for Lv. 70 to obey, and get all 8 for all Pokemon to obey.

Yes, but if you have no level badges? I never knew what it wasn't good to train upto, I think it wasn't as low as level 17 though.

charizard_maa February 28th, 2006 5:28 AM

Yeah. I guessing this kid only has one badge and is on his way to Dewford gym. So he had no level badges and he can't train his pokemon to level 20 or something. With the Dewford badge he be allow to train up to 30. So I was just giving him a fair warning. Last thing you want is raising your pokemon up to level x and not having it obey you.

Now wait a minute here, high level Pokes will only disobey you if you received them in a trade. That was a security measure that GF put into the game to prevent players from starting out with L70 uber Pokes and totally ruining the strategy/playability of the game. I have never had a problem (that I can recall) where a Poke that I raised myself disobeyed me.

As for leveling up your Pokes early on, I think that is a bad strategy. You are much better off bringing along your Pokes normally at first, and then later take advantage of locations where you get battles with lots of Exp points, and helpful items such as Exp Share. Plus it makes the game more of a challenge since the AI is subpar, battling opponents with lower level Pokes helps even out the playing field.

Aragorn gave the best advice, in relation to the second gym. A Taillow with Wing Attack is capable of blowing through every Poke. I suggest using it at Lv17 or 18, just to make it some kind of challenge. Starting with Mudkip, and adding Tailllow, you can get through the first three gyms pretty easily, especially in Ruby/Sapphire. I always do that so I can get to the point of setting up Secret Bases.

But sometimes taillow is not that good. remember its a normal type as well. besides a Sableye is the best. Its a ghost/dark type and it cant get hit with any moves of the gym.

Actually, Taillow is Normal/Flying, which is HUGE against the second gym. Not to mention the fact that it is easier to raise up than Sableye. If the question is which is a better overall Poke then I might agree with you on Sabby, but it wasn't. You can catch a Taillow on Route 104 and then level it up extremely easily against the Bug-type Pokes that trainers use against you and in the Petalburg Woods. It also learns Wing Attack at Lv13, which is a devastating attack against Fighting-types that early in the game. For the second gym, Taillow is all that is needed.

Okay I can agree with you on that. Yeah Taillow is a very good choice but sometimes you have to think into the future whether or not Taillow is good for your team(Thats if you keep it or not.) Sableye is good also for the gym and the Pokemon league with those Ghost types.

Its a good plan even tho its gonna take time. But imagine, if you keep doing that by the time you reach the Elite 4, your not going to have problems scince your pokemon will be strong.

But sometimes training like that is not always the best answer. Well he will need a Ice/Water type or just a plan Ice type to deafeat Drake and all of his Dragon types.
