Pokemon and Religion
Ok this question has really been bothering me for a few years now and no one person can give me a sraight answer to it. Ok so heres the question, Why do some strongly religous parents try their hardest to keep their children away from pokemon? I can see Yu-Gi-Oh with all the dark stuff in it and sacrifices and tributes and what not but why pokemon?
|
Other Chat is really more for things that don't have a forum to themselves...and there are forums that deal with pokemon, so this would fit better in one of those. Pokemon General seems like the best place for this, so...

You mean why is pokemon the target? The same reason a lot of other popular things are targeted...because they're popular (not the whole reason, obviously, but it is why it is targeted over other things) You see it with Harry Potter, too. There are much worse things than Harry Potter around, but because it's so well known they make that their main target for "consorting with the devil" section. They want to make an example of it...um *can't think how to explain it* Its easier to target the biggar and more popular things than it is to target the not so popular things. Whose going to care about a second rate programme that hardly anyone knows when they could target a huge corperation that's popular instead? Its going to give the popular thing AND the religious people more attention.
(I'm not saying that Yu-Gi-Oh is the second rate programme btw) Its just easier for them to take a topic and get their main target rather than going against loads. Well, this is just my opinion anyway. |
My guess would be that it probably has to do with rumours. When parents read all these crazy stories about Pokémon being evil and making children do devilish things like commtting suicide they take action that they believe will ultimatley protect their children and start causing havoc for the program to be cancelled. This plus, I agree with Jorah said. They say you know that you are popular when the tabloids have a story about you.
Either that or the parents are just jealous that the children are having so much fun and they want to ban it forever XD |
Yes, I pretty much agree with what Jorah and Krafty said.
There's no way anyone can look at Pokemon and think "That shows about the devil! Be need to ban it!" Pokemon is very popular, and like Jorah said, that's probably why they target it. Oh, and that stupid thing about the Pokemon theme being played backwards sounds like devil music is crap. XD |
I think it's because they don't want they're children to get so caught up in Pokemon or (Yugioh..etc) that they'll pay less and less attention to their religion so that's why they try to restrict it.
|
They want to keep their children away becuse they're ignorant, they don't realise that pokemon has nothing to do with their religion. They also think it's violent. That shows that they've never played a pokemon game(or watched their kid play one), nor actually watched an episode. They're too busy making their asinine speculations about something they don't understand.
|
I agree with gs. Some parents just don't understand. If you actually watch an episode, you can see that there is a moral trying to be taught in most episodes. A Pokemon book that my parents bought me in '01 had a giant list of morals that major episodes teach kids. One must keep his morals, right?
|
Actually, my guess is very simple.. it's just the basic fact that pokemon are monsters (pocket monsters). I once heard someone telling me that digimon is not good because of the word 'monster'.. and that goes the same for pokemon too.. so 'monster' might be a reason too
|
I agree with those of you who say it has something to do with the Cartoon Violence. This is old news btw, but certain shops (ELC) wouldn't sell Pokemon merchandise because they were considered violent.
I also think this is to do with the parents not being able to know the other Pokemon names other than Pikachu <sniggers>. I know this is a serious issue, but I thought it might need something original. |
Strongly religious people take things way out of porportion. Pokemon is about pokemon hurting other pokemon in battles. It won't tell kids to go out and sick their dog on another dog. LOL. I've read some religious articles on Pokemon a couple years ago and I kinda think it's insane. A lot of people complain though just to get attention.
|
actually, would it work if their parents see how cute some pokemon are? like say.. pikachu? my parents found it cute, and when they saw me watching pokemon, they'd say "oh.. hey, there's pikachu.. quite cute.." :)
|
It might work, my parents always thought some Pokemon were quite huggable, but still, even the cute Pokemon have to fight.
|
Oh, well some of the reasons that some religions dislike pokemon are that
1. Pokeballs are "magical" 2. Pokemon are "magical" creatures with supernatural powers 3. Its contridcts their view on how the world was created i.e. the theory of evolution. Pokemon evolve so this disagrees with their views 4. Not completly religious, but some people see it as animal cruelty Yeah, I know that pokeballs are actually technology, so don't ask me about the magic thing. I only know most of this stuff because I've tried to find out why other things (like Harry Potter) are supposed to be about the devil. Its not that anyone in my family are religious, I've just researched it... |

The same ignorance goes for evolution stones. Just because you touch a Thunder Stone to a Pikachu and it turns it into something completely different, doesn't mean that you are in league with Satan or something like that. Most parents don't exactly have time to play video games, however some parents seem to take many things too seriously. It's a harmless cartoon with nothing really satanic or something like that.

Meh, I'm tired of this now. Just so you know where I stand and stuff. I am not a religious person and I don't really care what other people worship, as long as you don't go all out showing crap like this up everyone's asses. |
Sweetie, the most logical explanition to ALL of this is that
Spoiler:
But what I don't understand is why Yu-Gi-Oh! hasn't gotten this much stupid religious contraversity: "Oh look, that evil looking kid sacraficed 2 scary demon like monsters for a magician that uses black magic. Nothing wrong here!" "That kid threw a ball and an orange dragon came out of it. It's OBVIOUSLY devil worship!" |
I had a preacher at my old church say this "Pokemon is of the devil" he said that in front of the church and said that "Pokemon were demonic creatures" apparently, he had never seen the cartoon. Anyways, like Jorah said,

One of my friends was banned from Pokemon, and here's why: The Psychic type.
His household (like mine and myself) was of the Christian religion. However, once his parents heard that there was a Psychic type (for those who don't know, we Christians don't believe in Telekinetic abilities or anything of the mind reading/future seeing sort), they felt that it encouraged this belief in psychic powers. Of course, I strongly disagreed, but there was nothing I, nor my friend, could do. |

Because some Christian parents are retarded. I know that sounds like a childish answer, but it really is the truth.

I know what you mean I used to be able to play and watch pokemon all the time, but then my grandmother said pokemon was pocket deamons (pocket monsters on the back of the cards). And so ever since then i've been baned from the show and the game. Coming from a christian family, naturaly my grandmother is going to get on every single show I watch, and she breathes down my back everytime I get on the computer (when she comes over). So as of now Im banned from pokemon, yugioh, used to be banned from digimon (they forgot over the years), harry potter, and ed ed and eddy (I dont even know why).
|
I myself come from a religious background, but I never heard anyone affiliate the words Pokemon and Religion.
I was pokemad whan I was younger, and my parents understood that it was just a fad of sorts - something to be interested in. The only thing they disliked about it was the blowing of money on flimsy cards - that's it. My school banned the cards cause they probably were distacting, and posed a threat to those students who brought them to school (the cards might be stolen by other students). Maybe parents don't want their kids to be distracted, to waste money and so on - any mention of religion as a reason is more than likely an excuse. But in the end, parentals are just trying to protect their children, from whatever it may be. Sure it may be unreasonable (and hypocritical) to use religion as an excuse, but your parents might just not want you wasting your time and money. Well actually, their money, hehehehe. |
true.. in fact, what you've just described matches 90% of my own situation. My primary school banned the cards, and announced it on the very first day I brought my cards to school :P
My parents don't disapprove of me watching the anime, but they really hated it when I bought the cards.. yep, they said it was a waste of money, so I had to buy them secretly when I really couldn't resist. XD but my parents never mentioned anything religious for that matter.. |
Well, other than the fact that im banned from pokemon (the show) and a couple of other shows Im ok. But I know in the future I know I will be banned from other shows. Considering the fact that my grandmother thinks that the ninja turtles are evil deamons.
grandmother: turn that devilish movie off! me 5 years old: but im just watching...... grandmother: boy you are going to go to hell i you keep watching these kind of movies! (puts oil on my forehead) me 5 years old: *your the one who bought the tape in the first place* |
I think, sometimes, people put faith before logic and reason.
|
I don't think this has been mentioned in this thread yet; but, let me tell you something, people. In April of 2000, the Pope/the Vatican--in Rome, Italy--had actually given his/their official blessing to Pokemon for teaching children such valuable lessons and morals. (You can see the article here, if you guys haven't already.) You don't get much more Christian than the Pope... O_o So, I don't know why people are still being so neurotic about it...especially the particular Christian group that kept exploiting Pokemon for being the spawn of the Devil or something, lol. >_<

There WERE some cases where the Pokemon WERE forced to fight. ~__~ Surge forced his Raichuu to evolve for fighting. And what about the first movie? They even mentioned it was a fight to the death o_O I agree with Jorah though about putting faith before common sense and logic >> Some Christians ARE really retarded; it kinda makes me look down on them and the whole human race itself -___- It's a CARTOOON. WHATS SO BAD ABOUT IT??? God sometimes these kinda people make me so madd..over-reacting at every little thing they see. I feel bad for the children who have to deal with these immature bags of...*sigh* ok I'll stop now *dies* |
my dad is christan, and so is my dads mom,but they never say anything about it.
O_o but they call it pokeMAN O_o my mom watched 2 of the movies with me,and buys me all sorts of pokemon games. she is even going to put me back into the YMCA summer program so i can trade pkmn with my freinds that are going there for summer O.o but in my mind, some ppl are retarded that way, banning their kids from pkmn that is. i dont really watch the anime anymore, but i ocasonally watch the movies. even my other grandparents try and understand pkmn! i dont really know why pkmn are considered "desendants of satan" to some, but they are not. id understand harrypotter and yugioh being banned from christains children, but pokemon i do not understand why. |
My parents call it PokeMan too! Hehe
|
I read an article once typed up my some priest... explaing why Pokemon was a cult, and evil.
One of the main reasons was because it taught kids about black-magic, peganism, satanism, and so on. Because some of the Pokemon have 'magical attacks' or 'Psychic' powers, that have to do with Black Magic. Those things apparently teach kids the ways of the devil, and show them things that are against God. oO Pokemon isn't against God, Pokemon IS God. XD ~ Peace |
