Movesets for Snorlax please. Alot in play to think about.

Hello one and all. Snorlax is one of my favorite Pokemon. I may not talk alot about him (We will say "Him" because they are mostly male; meh) or really show it, but he is. And right now, I'm trying to get a Shiny version of him.

I haven't trained a Snorlax since the R/B/Y. My usual team doesn't have room for a Normal type Pokemon... but in order to be great, you have to make exceptions.
Well, I'm past that. I'm pulling an Ash Ketchum. I'm creating a huge team of Pokemon. Or have. I have all my Sapphire Pokemon, and all my good Pokemon that I trust and know their capabilities on my main game, Pokemon FireRed. But I don't want to get off-topic. I'm using LeafGreen to try and dig up a Shiny Snorlax out of the sand. And I know I will, eventually.
But once I do, what will I do with it? It's been a while since I've actually trained Pokemon. But I'm definately a veteran; I've been here since the beginning when the show first started playing over here in the US.

So, what are some really good movesets for Snorlax? Another reason he's one of my favorites is that he can learn so many moves, therefore, there are so many possibilities. So I expect to get alot of feedback. :|
Alot of things come into play in these newer generations... Now there's Natures, new Held Items, combos, moves, strategies... and EV training. My first EV trained Pokemon was my Shiny Ninetails that I caught as a Shiny Vulpix on LeafGreen a while back. So, I know what EV training and stuff is. And I'll be doing the Snorlax the same way, but I'd like some suggestions on that, which depends on the Nature, and then all that leads up to moves. So... I don't have it yet, so I don't know what kind of Nature it will be. But I'd like to see what is on peoples' minds. :)
So, please, give me your suggestions. Shiny Snorlax happens to be blue. My own thinkings was..

I might pair it up with my Ninetails in a Double Battle. The Ninetails' moveset is Flamethrower, Will-O-Wisp, Confuse Ray, Return. I do NOT want moveset suggestions for this pokemon!!!!
It has 100 EVs in Attack, 255 in Special Attack, and the rest in Speed. My main strategy is get in the first attack with Confuse Ray or Flamethrower, then, if I want, mess with the human opponents' mind with Will-O-Wisp, and then toast it ASAP. It won't last long with low Defense. But it's mostly for show anyway.

Snorlax won't be that kind of Pokemon. He is known for being a real pain in the rear sometimes.
Moves I have in mind (in no particular order, and there's more than 4.) are Yawn, Earthquake (although it would kill Ninetails, it would be massive with Snorlax's Attack), Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Flamethrower... There's alot to think about. Since Ninetails is my Special hitter, I was leaning more toward Physical Attacks with Snorlax, to execute it's higher Attack power than Sp. Attack, however... you can't diss those Special Attacks that are in it's movepool. And then there's the Rest combos.... Wow. I'm old school though. Diverse attacks. I heard someone say that too. But not here. At NSider. Anyhoo, please give my Snorlax Movesets! :D

Never understood the fascination with Pokes of a different color, and never will. Oh well, that isn't the topic at hand. Here is your Snorlax:

Snorlax @ Leftovers
Trait: Thick Fat
EVs: 160 HP / 188 Atk / 56 Def / 104 SDef
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Body Slam/Return
- Curse
- Earthquake/Shadow Ball
- Rest

This is the standard Curselax that has dominated every metagame since its inception. It is rather old though. The new sensation is the Stalkerlax:

Snorlax @ Leftovers
Trait: Thick Fat
EVs: 160 HP / 188 Atk / 56 Def / 104 SDef
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Double-Edge
- Earthquake/Shadow Ball
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

IIRC, the EVs are different, but I am too lazy to look them up. Hopefully, someone else can assist in that regard. Basically it hits hard while its awake and then still hits hard while it is asleep.

That is basically as diverse you want to go. Other movesets have been tried and they have failed. Special attacks should not be wasted on Snorlax. Also, don't pair Snorlax up with Ninetales. That is just asking to lose. Go with a Poke that can cover Snorlax's weaknesses or a Poke that resists EQ, if you choose to go that route. Ninetales does neither.

Good luck.

DDD'SSCEPTILE June 30th, 2006 6:26 PM

Someone who wouldn't understand a "pokes of a different color" wouldn't understand why I wanted to pair one with it.
Thanks for the suggestions, and like you said, I hope I get more. :|

Curselax is really outdated in todays metagame. To be honest tho, curse lax works better ingame.Thats my personal experience. The AI won't really stop you once you've gotten a few curses.

As for ur ninetales..I won't rate it, i'll just say - "Return is stupid"

Go with Shane's suggestions.
OH btw..special attacks not named Fire Blast are stupid on Snorlax.Keep that in mind.

Synchronize June 30th, 2006 9:46 PM

I can vouch that Curselax is outdated, but nevertheless still as useful.

If you wanna par it with Ninetails, you can always use Fire Blast to take advantage of Flash Fire. Protect can then be used over Return (dumb move on Nintales) so that Snorlax has room to Earthquake.

Toothache July 1st, 2006 12:24 AM

Protect is always useful if you want to squeeze Selfdestruct onto Snorlax (needs the XD Move Tutor though to get that move).

Ichigo Flash July 1st, 2006 2:15 AM

Hehe fellow SHC member :)
I'v got the standerd Curselax and its pretty good ingame and for linked battles
But look at Sync's and Tooth's for an alternative play, would look to work out pretty nicely.

Toothache July 1st, 2006 2:55 AM

Curselax kinda fails in Double Battles since you won't survive double punishment. Better to go all out attack, Snorlax can do this fine with 110 base Att to play with.

[email protected] **I Eat Curry
Trait: Thick Fat
EV: 172 HP/180 Att/88 Def/70 Sp Def
Nature: Careful
- Body Slam/Return/Double-Edge
- Shadow Ball/Earthquake
- Selfdestruct
- Protect

Body Slam is your best bet, since paralysing your opponent makes getting off Selfdestruct easier. This is mainly a sample idea of how Selfdestruct could work on Snorlax. I couldn't tailor any further since I don't know the rest of your team except Ninetales.

Untested idea, but maybe Curse could work with Protect. (have Protect over Rest, but set up as standard Curselax).

Protect over Return on Ninetales please. Physical attacks do not belong on Ninetales and Protect is easily bought using a TM. Too bad you wasted a bunch of EVs on Attack. =(

And with protect, you can put both Earthquake AND Selfdestruct on Snorlax. Well, getting Selfdestruct on Snorlax is gonna be a pain without Pokemon XD.

Toothache July 3rd, 2006 12:12 AM

Actually, more like nigh-on impossible, since that's the only in-game Move Tutor for Selfdestruct :-p

Lord Mike July 3rd, 2006 5:02 AM

I think Stalkerlax is useless. It never works for me.

I sometimes use Bellylax. Its lots of fun.

Snorlax @ Leftovers
Trait: Thick Fat
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
-Rest
-Earthquake
-Return
-Belly Drum

aragornbird July 3rd, 2006 7:45 AM

~*^*~~*^*~ ~*^*~ ~*^*~ ~*^*~~*^*~

This is 2 vs. 2, not 1 vs. 1. As soon as they see your Snorlax Belly Drum, they will direct both of their attacks at him and take him out. Follow Me won’t help as the most common 2 vs. 2 attacks are Earthquake and Selfdestruct/Explosion, which hit both opponents. Not to mention that Snorlax’s partner in this case is Ninetales, who can’t learn Follow Me.

Lord Mike July 3rd, 2006 8:50 AM

Oops! I'm sorry about that.

jc_rcw July 3rd, 2006 9:55 AM

Were is 0malax? =( or even CBlax they are worth mentioning.

Toothache July 4th, 2006 1:50 AM

What's an 0malax?

And yeah, CBer is cool. I don't like it for 2 v 2s much cos I like being able to change moves without switching, but it can work.

jc_rcw July 4th, 2006 5:00 AM

Well cbanders tend to switch a lot, and 0malax is this lax with fire blast, body slam, rest, filler iirc. Never used it, but seems fun.

Toothache July 4th, 2006 5:15 AM

FBlast is still an option, since I like using Forry in 2 v 2s, more for the Explosion than anything else and to soak one up himself.

Maybe I'm just crazy like that to use Forretress in 2 v 2s, but hey.

jc_rcw July 4th, 2006 5:17 AM

Well mostly people use explosion, protect, raindacers (aka kingdra), so yeah :\.

Firebolt5 July 5th, 2006 5:02 AM

Snorlax sucks in 2 vs. 2. It works fine as a special wall in 1 vs. 1 OU but Fighting-types will team up on him if you don't have Follow Me.

jc_rcw July 5th, 2006 9:55 AM

Meh most follow me users are normal/part normal.

Exokriz July 5th, 2006 12:57 PM

Like the others, I have to say that a 2 vs. 2 Snorlax is not a good choice. Snorlax is much better for 1 vs. 1. So here is a nice 1 vs. 1 moveset. (I'm not too good with EVs but this would be probably what I would use on EVs)

[email protected]/Chesto Berry
-Rest
-Earthquake
-Shadow Ball
-Fire Blast/Ice Beam

But I use a really weird Snorlax, it works though

Snorlax
-Body Slam
-Covet
-Rest
-Shadow Ball

I start each battle using Covet, so I can get Berrys and things like that, then I use Body Slam unless they are Ghost and I'll use Shadow Ball. Rest when HP gets low. I've made a theif team before which got me some really good items :) Snorlax was in it

shanecdavis July 5th, 2006 1:17 PM

Please don't use Covet on Snorlax. There are too many other Pokes that you can stick that move on. Snorlax should not be one of them.

jc_rcw July 5th, 2006 1:22 PM

I've seen a few sub, focuspunch, rest, return laxes around.

Flame Demon July 6th, 2006 6:14 AM

Subpunchlax sounds cool. I haven't seen anybody use it though. I wonder why?

I use that move to steal items like berries and things like that. I know it really isnt the best move, but my Snorlax can steal there item and kill them in 1 turn. As long as Snorlax has a great ATK stat. I would think it would be a pretty decent fighter. I usually capture both Snorlaxes in the game anyway. I use one to experiment with.

Its not as popular as some of the better ones like the one that uses Earthquake, Rest, Shadowball, and Return. (Dont exactly know the name of this one)
