Pokémon Ruby


.:: Introduction ::.

Well it’s self explanatory, it’s basically a patch with D/P that I’ll allow people to hack over, it’s not going to be perfect because ruby cannot handle those sorts of graphic palettes. I may also add what I think the first few towns will look like.


.:: Story ::.

Alpha 1:
Status:
No event editing.
Warps have been moved to appropriate doors non added, no removed.
There is no in game text editing.
Can go up to the second town.
No scripting.
Naetoru IS in the game.
My old Diamond sprte is in as I lost my old one down to virus' but I'll replace that
Graphics of the main tileset are about 40% done...
Alpha name: "Special Pre D/P taster edition"

The lab is in the top right hand building of futaba - [first town] and contains the pokemon bag, this is temporary until I do the scripting.

Right I'll have everyone know that I wouldn't normally release this, but with the date being what it is, I think it's best. Some mapping is a bit off for instance when in Futaba and going on to the first route it overlaps on the trees. But it will give you the feel of D/P.
The girl overworld is not finished and the male forward walking is not too great, but I'll reupload when this is done.

I made one of the houses..... The colors are messed up since I used a few colors from some pokemon, but they're easily editable..... you can put this into your game if you know how....

Thanks for the banner by the way, I'll give it a miss, but others can use it if the feel like advertising with it if kingofgames300g agrees,I might make some of my own but Wolt gives a good point. I have to congratulate you. No one tried to do this, and now, when you did this, just nearly everybody wants to criticise, but I like it. If you need help with walking overworld sprites of male hero, just tell me and I'll try to do that. But, I need to see all sprites of hero. Enjoy hack making ;)

Zerus: I know we bearly know about d/p, we have a map and a video of one town, anyway the main idea of this hack is for others to use. I'll do my best to do a little of D/P. Yes, I hope it doesn't end up being sold, I respect nintendo. Although I can play it on a DS on my flash cart.

I'm doing more work on it later, I might show the battle screen if I get it done, I'm also gonna attempt to change the signs pallete and then maybe have another go at expanding the tileset so I can add theat house as shown above. By the way the polls interesting, it's backwards to what I would of thought. If anyone knows how to stop UNLZ freezing when inserting a larger tileset to a different place, please post here. By the way has anyone got any requests, like in the beta do you want a script with 3 starters or whatever.

vipershark: It's nice, but it's a copy of Nanakamado-hakase's lab, so just to warn that it should not be used for general houses (to the hack author). And technical restrictions would prevent that from being viable. The Advanced tileset doesn't use objects in that manner.

I'll try and finish this or at least the graphics. I've not got around to the starters yet, although I've made a pre-written script for the Jhoto starters, I might use that. Has anyone any preference?
Also I corrected the walking. Still seems a little wierd when walking forwards, but not as much. Also heres my spite off the diamond:

Ok, I'll thicken out his legs if you like. I don't mind you editing my sprite at all. All I did to make it was by going over a picture of the size comparison. Also the new screens released will help with the battle editing. It should be easier to do then the old ones.

Wow this is looking awesome.

I can't wait to see the houses, but will they be difficult to implement, considering the angle that D/P has.

The Diamond Sprite however, seems a bit off. It's mostly the arms and waist, but there are other small things too (such as his bag).

@ Blazichu: Your sprite looks really out of proportion

In addition, have you done any Pearl sprites?

No I've not done any pearl ones yet, I'm going to continue redoing that sprite so forget it exists. Yeah the houses are hard, considering it keeps freezing upon insertion whilst repointing. More updates later.

Well, first of all, there is no DS Emulator that 'plays' more than a couple of DS Roms and tey are DEMO's! ...
So no, .. not as soon they will be on internet...
But maybe, one day.. And then it's still hard, I think we need to do everything in hex, because the tiles need more than a normal Mapeditor.

Correct me when I'm wrong ..

Well I know you said dat you've already redone the Diamond Sprites, but I'll still post mine up anyways.

The first two are the main ones, the second being modifyed (Brendans right arm). However, these both contain 23 colours.

The third one has been reduced to 16 colours, but I thinks it looks terrible. The fourth one has also been reduced to 19 colours.

Will do.

While you are correct in saying that it is incredibly hard to hack a DS rom, there are a number of emulators out there that are currently able to play commerrcial roms, my recomendation being DeSmuME. So just search them in Google.

But you need a pretty good computer to use them anyways.

Anywho, I went off and made a Pearl sprite as well, but it has 30 colours - I couldn't be bothered in trying to reduce it.

I made two different versions as you can see - one is Green (FR/LG Heroine), and the other is a R/S/E character (I dunno the name). No poses were changed either.

Also, about your banner thing, Wolt was kinda right before. You shouldn't be using it to advertise. Instead, you should create a banner or something that displays how much effort has been put into the hack, like with a OW screenie or something.

Ther good - not as good as ur diamond one but nintendo have released one in one of the screens. Chris-h11 are you refering to ray.z or my overworlds, if thats the case it's because it's in a different perspective to ruby, so some old sprites are still there, they're an exact replica (-1 pixel) from the screens and I'm making the rest to the same scale

seemed to be a misunderstanding, I think. No, it' not on the GBA. It can't handle it (says me, whos making it on the gba, but with a reduced palette so I can get away with it)
Yea it would even be hard to use a ds emulator without a graphics tablet if we got a functional one.

I'll do some work later and try to insert the house when that's done and the battle screen I'll release the beta. I also need to do the sideways stairs for the rocks etc.

Everyones having it due to that 1000 of URL request thing. I've sorted a way to do the starters now anyway, seen as how it's a briefcase, I'll justedit the bag event and stick it in the lab. So you can edit it as normal. Starter requests anyone?

Yea, I knew that it was the size in Diamond and Pearl but I was making sure that you were either going to change ALL the other overworlds or just make the hero overworld R/S/E size.

Thanks Jeremy. My plan was to work through them steadily. Does anyone know why when I extendthe main tileset (1617) down and repoint, when I go on advancemaps block editor, it only goes to the tiles it would normally be? (Excludes the extended bit but alll other changes apppear) is this not possible?

AM and EM are made to recognize the tileset, but are also programmed with the default image dimensions. It will only show what is within those dimensions. Sorry.

Oh thats a pain, now there's one for LU-HO for the next Advancemap... I's ok though, I'll re-arange the tiles and repoint it, ths makes it awkward as it no longer appears in UNLZ, but you can import and write it to it's new position. Looks like I' gonna have to release a tutorial on how to do this with the release. Anyway I've done another position of the stairs:

Comments? OK. That's a view of the stairs from behind, right? Do they actually have that in D/P or are you making that up? Also, I only see one. Anyway, this looks good, and it'd be nice to know how to change the tiles with unLZ-GBA, please give that tutorial.

There is, I wont make things up in my games titles. Proof:

The main problem with this is that Diamond and Pearl have 3D maps. You should keep that in mind. Stick with the 2D look of the GBA games.

Study the pictures on page one ad compare them to some of Diamond and Pearls, there's not much difference. Without this interface, the hack would be nothing. Thanks, I may try it, but it wold mean sacrificing other palettes, wouldn't it? Iy's currently just the colours of the normal trees under a palette change. Thats the main problem, not enough palettes. That why most things are reduced, such as the trees. I'm gonna try to reduce mine to 2 tiles anyways, so I'll have a go later at finding a palette I won't use.

Well iv not looked into the GBA system fully, but I beleive that the GBA uses 256 colours made up of 16, 16 colour pallets, so useing that tree souldnt be a problem.

Yeah, but it's shared with the rest of the tileset, so when I edit it I've got to figure out what I can and can't loose. But yes, you are correct in theory, it is possible, so thanks.

Thanks, but I can't take the credit, it's a rip from a screen. I've then done stretch/skew and reduced it to ruby's size. It is from ... this screen...

Thanks. If it was up to me, you'd have it all ready. But the poll says differently. So unless that changes it'll be when I mange to correctly insert houses. I also want to edit the trees again before release.

Look, I know it's a rip from the screenies, but it is actually too tall for the GBA games I believe.

See how (in my little crappy attempt at transperancy in MS Paint) the DP sprite you got is heaps taller than Red. It doesn't look natural.

See how DP sprite you got is heaps taller than Red. It doesn't look natural.

I understand now, It's because the DS screen is larger. Thats the main problem and thats why I struggle to insert things. I have had another thought I may be able to get the trees down to the correct size if I can work out what % smaller the GBA screen is than the DS. This would help to get everything in proportion using the stretch / skew tool in MS paint. So yeah your right I may edit it.

Expect screens soon as I'm planning on doing the bag. Im making a site so I may give the hack a page of it's own.

Thanks that really helped, I should be able to work out he percentages from that. I was just about to start scratchig my DS's screen up with a ruler. So thanks, its in paint and saved

Ok thanks, I'm ok for help. But if I PM you a patch could you test the graphics and the music. I'm not so sure about the new battle music so tell me what you think. Also here is what I'm AIMING FOR with the battle screen - This is not yet part of the game, it's just to show what I want to do.

Well that seems fine, but I don't see how it is much different to D/P screen.

Well I guess you could try and make the grass patch under the hero and pochy to look more like the D/P ones.

Thanks, I'm trying to do the palette edting now. But I'm struggling because its not finding it in hex, so I'm making a mistake somewhere. Also do you ever get palettes that are like --67 5467 45-- (- could be anything and I made the numbers up) instead of 6754 6745 ?

Good luck. ^_^ You should release the game ASAP, then when Sprites come out for the game, you could replace them. Nothing wrong with releasing a version after the official one is out. Also try using the grass from FRLG, you should be able too because FRLG was built off of R/S. =/


Edit: Are you keeping the original story and etc, or just changing the graphics or what? You should buy the game when it comes out then remake the game on a hack. That would PWN.

Yeah I might do the fire-red grass thing, yeah I planned on versions after the first anyway. Hey good idea, I might do that (make the game after release). It's not like we can hack it straight away anyway. Yeah I'll use a bit of the D/P story.

The starters atm should be left the same. and try to make the truck into a Car. That seems logical. Just keep making the graphics.

Yeah the graphics are staying, however the truck you mention is going. He'll start in his room, I planned this from the beggining, has anyone any ideas on how to get rid of the screen shaking. By the way I'm not having testers, whats to test? I've not done anything tonight through building my site, I'll give this a page when I get around to it.

but i cant understand how would you extract the storyline of the future new game..
right now only a few details about the development of the events has been released, and a hack needs a lot of texts.

Thanks, your hack was always one I looked forward to in release. Over the extracting the story line. It's more for other people to hack over, but yes it's going to hae Diamond and pearl in, it's easy to plan out little events though. Like at first you go and see the professor in his lab, the you have the briefcase event, an easy edit of the bag. Then you go on the adventure, I can plan the missing bits from the world map. At the third town your encountered by that team and the proffessor also you battle your rival on the route to the right. I'd also imagine a gym would be in this town too. Yeah it does need alot of texts, but if I do them at the same time as doing the map, I should manage. Thanks for the images too, I like some of yours toobut I'll use the official, so thanks and if they're used your name will be in the credits. I'd use them now but that tutorial has been "~~~~Temporaraly Removed~~~~" so if aynone has a copy could you PM it to me please?

i've sorted out te trees but they need inserting, I added both my horizontal and vertical percentages and divided it by two to keep proportion and it came out fine see:

Stech and Skew is good. MS Paint is good if you know how to use it properly, it's good for drawing, but Photoshop still pwns. ;)

Yeah, I've got both, but for tiles paint is easier.

I've inseted the tree and it looks rather bad. If anyone feels like importing the middle tree from above, feel free. I'll remake mine again as it's not even worth posting. (Don't worry I've got back ups of the game if I can't sort out these trees.) Just use the space provided within the image bellow. If I use yours instead of mine you'll get credit.

How many colours does your tree have?

It has 7 not including the grass, but that order of shading needs to stay as it's been palette edited. I'll have another go myself in the morning. Also it can't be half of a tree to mirror, D/P doesn't work that way, the point sticks out at one side or the other. I've learn't alot about these future games through this. Especially the 89% for DS to GA conversion (it's actually 88.5% but you can't have half a pixel so it may be ne pixel over)
