Quick Question and Answer Thread / Breeding Questions

Welcome to the Official Generation IV Question and Answer Thread!

This thread is a consolidated area where all simple questions about the Diamond, Pearl and Platinum versions can be asked.

So what should I post here?

As you should all know, the main body of the forum is the place to submit threads that will create discussion amongst the other members of the forum, and submitting threads to ask a simple question simply pushes these worthwhile discussions down the page and out of view. So basically, any question that would get the same or similar answers from everybody who replies should be asked in this thread, as they will not create any discussion whatsoever. You can also use this thread to ask if your Pokémon is legitimate or not.

What about my team?

In-game teams should be posted in the In-Game Team Help subforum. Team rates for competitive teams should be asked in the Strategies and Movesets forum.

Well, that’s it! Thanks for using the thread, and don’t forget to ask the kind chaps who look at this thread for help if you need it!

Breeding Questions

What's acceptable in this thread. Here are some examples:
  • How do you get <insert egg move> on <random Pokemon>?
  • Why isn't <Pokemon> breeding with <Pokemon>?
  • What item do I need to breed <Pokemon>?

Questions about soft resetting are also acceptable here.

Here's a rundown of some of the more common questions:
  • Can you breed a Shiny Pokemon from Shiny Parents? The Answer is No.
  • How does one pass on TM from parent to child? The Father must know the move and the child must be capable of learning the TM.

Where is the best place to make money in Diamond and Pearl

Cause im like broke and i need money for ultra balls and max repels Fast

Abbandon March 10th, 2009 6:01 AM

i'd guess the best way to make money would be to use vs seeker and fight trainers again.. or do pokemon league again if you're that far and if you have high level pokemon to do it quickly and easily.

Depends.

You can easily get money with the Amulet Coin and re-battle trainers with the Vs. Seeker.

.Nighthawk. March 10th, 2009 9:04 AM

a good way to get loads of money is to go underground and spend sometime digging up treasures and selling them when you get back to the land

Raising Tyrogue in D/P

Ok the thing is I have a Tyrogue egg. When it hatches I'll like to evolve it to a Hitmontop. But the thing is I know its attack and defence have to be equal. Any tips of doing this?

Use plenty of vitamins to try to maintain equal attack+Defense on him.If you're not ready at lvl 20,make him hold an everstone and remove it when he'd ready, then level up.

By the Backlot mansion, there are two trainers: A Socialite and a Gentleman. They use a Roselia and a Chatot respectively. For beating them when their Pokemon are lv. 60 (this will require a few VS Seeker rematches beforehand), you get http://archives.bulbagarden.net/w/upload/9/94/Pok%C3%A9buck_sign.gif24000 each. Holding an Amulet Coin doubles the amount of money. This is an easy way to grind for money since these Pokemon are generally easy to KO.

I suggest that you train it to lv. 19 first. Then, if its stats aren't equal, use Proteins or Irons, depending on your needs, to boost the lower stat until they are both equal. If it doesn't work the first time, try again on the next level until you succeed.

If you plan on EV training it, I suggest that you use the EV reduction berries such as Pomeg, Kelpsy, and Tamato. So you can make sure what EVs you're Hitmontop is getting. If not, then just ignore this part.

Elite Four, just battle them over and over, each one of them provides tons of money.

As everyone said, vitamins such as Proteins and Iron, get them at Veilstone Department Store, and to get the money to buy them, see what I stated above.

Problem with that is... i cant find one there

jigglyppuff8 March 10th, 2009 1:58 PM

After you beat Wake, you should've battled your rival. Afterwards, there is a grunt by the entrance to the Great Marsh (Safari Zone). If you talk to him he will run away like a coward. After some series of events (drawing blanks here XD), Cynthia will appear and give you a Secretpotion which you use to get rid of the Psyduck blocking the path by the Cafe on Route 210 and a Key Item called an Old Charm to deliver to her Grandmother in Celestic Town, which is located past where the Psyduck were blocking the path. Then some crucial plot points happen that I don't want to spoil, so you should figure out how to go on from this point unless you're really desperate. Afterwards though, you should be able to challenge the Hearthome gym.
Hope this helps somewhat.

Okay I have a couple questions.

1. Where do you get the chain Pokemon app? (the one that shows you your highest chains)

2. Where is the move deleter at?

matt561 March 10th, 2009 2:06 PM

Yes but where did the Grunt go?
The problem is cythia isent at the lake I need to know what to do so that she appears

And iInever beat my rival after Wake nothing happend.....maybe should go back to Pastoria and see

jigglyppuff8 March 10th, 2009 2:08 PM

1. Professor Oak gives it to you when you first enter the Pal Park after receiving the Pokeradar.

2. Pastoria City. Southeastern most house. Ayayayayaya... Thinking of move tutor. Canalave City. Right below the Pokemon Center.

@ matt561: Head in the right (-->) direction.

bearsfan092 March 10th, 2009 2:53 PM

Okay guys, need some suggestions for those of you that have faint clue on the OU metagame. I don't need experts in any way, just suggestions:
Well, I'm looking at stuff to breed (OU) and don't know what I should do next. I'm capable of doing it all from IV's to Hidden Power, so I'm wondering what OU (or former BL) pokes I should breed. Give me a list of 3 so I have alternatives, seeing as I already have a stockpile.

Use this form:
[email protected]
Variant (Example: Mixper, Curselax, Scarf Flygon, CB Gross)
Hidden Power (If Applicable. Don't put stupid hidden powers for something that doesn't need it).
Moveset

Thanks for your help!

Ruby-kun, this isn't too hard to answer.

1) After obtaining the PokeRadar, go to Pal Park, where Professor Oak will give you the application.

2) The move deleter's location is on eastern Canalave City, below the Pokemon Center and the Darkrai event house.

Thanks ur way to make money Seems the best

groudonlover March 11th, 2009 2:34 AM

Here are some:

IV = Individual Value = Random numbers(up to 32) added to every stat when you catch a Pokémon
EV = Effort Value = Read here
Shiny = ... = A Pokémon in "wrong" color, that has a chance of 1 on ~8200 of appearing in the wild
PKRS = Pokérus = A sort of virus that also has a chance of 1/~8000 of appearing and doubles EVs
Crit = Critical Hit = An attack that does double the normal damage, has 8% chance on normal attacks, and 15% on attacks such as Slash, Blaze Kick and Sky Attack. You'll get the message "A Critical Hit!" if you manage to land one
KO = Status: FNT = The Pokémon has 0 HP left
ANNOYING ******* MOUSE!!!!!! = Pikachu = An annoying little electric mouse -.-
AR = Action Replay = A Cheating Device
GS = Game Shark = Another Cheating Device
Dual-Type = Pokémon with two types = Pokémons like, for example, Blaziken is BOTH Fire AND Fighting
Single-Type = Pokémon with only one type = Pokémons like, for example, Alakazam is ONLY Psychic

400/Double/4x Weakness = 400% weakness = Attack damage multiply gotten by attacking a Dual-typed Pokémon with something both its types are weak to(like Heracross(Bug/Fighting) -> Flying)
200/2x Weakness = 200% weakness = Attack damage multiply gotten by attacking a Dual-typed Pokémon with something one of it's types are weak to and the other is not resistant against, or a Single-Typed Pokémon with something it's weak to

== GAMES ==
R/B/Y = Red/Blue/Yellow, first generation games
G/S/C = Gold/Silver/Crystal, second generation games
R/S/E = Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, first of the third generation games
FR/LG = FireRed/LeafGreen, 1st generation remakes, second of the third generation games
D/P/Pt = Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, fourth, and most recent generation games

Hope that helped!

The Riolu Egg is obtained in the game after you go through Iron Island with Riley and at least one spare slot for a pokemon.

If you don't have a free space, go make a space and then go through the place again until you find Riley.

Riolu can also be found with a trainer you battle in Oreburgh Gate after obtaining Surf. This is only if you want to see Riolu though, but going this way also leads to Focus Punch and Brick Break.

Has all of the ingame coding for Platinum been established? I was wondering if there could be events we dont know about within the coding.

Ozzy March 12th, 2009 1:16 PM

Like most people, I use Amulet Coin on my Monferno and my Shaymin. I think theres 2 trainers on route 202 (Maybe another route) With a roselia and a Chatot, if you keep rebattling them using the Vs. Seeker, you can get 200k+ in less then 4 battles. Which is definetely enough for a lot of max repels and ultra balls, for your own Chaining greed.

to get a happiny, Simply breed a Chansey, Or theres a hiker in the bottom right corner of hearthome city. Beware, to hatch it, it takes ALOT of steps. 16k I believe.

(Sorry if i mispell words alot, My keys on my laptop are suckish :P)

Meh... no one noticed it? IVs go from 0 to 31, not 32.
You have less of a chance to get Pokerus than you do to get a shiny. It's more than 1/8192, which is the chance you have to encounter a shiny poke.

And finally, the crit percentage is 6.25%, raising to 12.5% with higher crit percentage moves.

What are you referring to?

"Events", as in event Pokemon, are given away at events and distributed via Wonder Card. They aren't pre-programmed into the game.

The key items for Arceus, Darkrai, and Shaymin are still there, and Japan has already gotten Darkrais and is set to get Shaymin's soon.

Haza March 12th, 2009 1:54 PM

I mean like the downloadable items lie the Gracidea flower. I was curious of like a new hold item for Arceus, like the LifeJewel from the new movie.

One word to describe what AR is on this site: Taboo.

bearsfan092 March 12th, 2009 6:10 PM

Not entirely true on AR Usage. There are several codes that a lot of breeders use (Fast Egg, Fast Hatch, IV Check), as well as a lot of item hacking going on that's been accepted to a degree. I've seen a lot of people offering TM's, Berries, and the like from an AR.

D&P Advice Needed.

Hey Everyone.

Due to a faulty card my Pokemon Game has gone Bye Byes.
But I have found a store in town that my Boyfriend is going to take me to tonight.
They sell D&P for £8.00 but I can't decide which to go for.
Any advice?

Also would anyone be willing to give me a hand with the game? Kinda lost all my Pokemon so any would be GREAT!!!!!!
I do have the AR thingy to Clone Pokemon but refuse to use it to create them.

Thanks!

It's all about which exclusives you want. Bulbapedia and Serebii list what is exclusive to each game. It also helps if you have GBA games to utilize the dongle method.

The storyline is EXACTLY the same.

Personally, I'd just wait and grab Platinum. More wild Pokemon, fresh story, etc...

If you use it in even one in-game battle before it has competed its EV training, then it will already have excess EVs, meaning that you will either need to remove those EVs or find another Dragonair to train.

In other words, the sooner that you begin training, the better that the result will be.

jigglyppuff8 March 13th, 2009 12:14 PM

You should've done it while it was a Dratini. EVs are gained any time you battle, so that means you "EV trained" without realizing it. However, if you want to keep that particular Dragonite, you should use the EV reduction berries, the ones that say "lower base stat" or something to that effect, until it says that the stats won't drop anymore.

Question about gen4 games

Well i haven't played these games before and im getting tired of playing gen 3 games cause ive played them so many times, and im wondering if its really worth the money to just go out and buy a nintendo ds and pearl/diamond/platinum. Oh and since i don't know ANYTHING about the gen4 games can someone explain to me the differences between the 3 games and the differences between the gen 3 games and them?

Red-The-First-I March 13th, 2009 2:16 PM

EV Training in D, P, Pt

Hey,
Can anyone explain me how to EV train Pokémon.
Does this help for Contests too?
I never got that.

Thanks a lot

Forci Stikane March 13th, 2009 2:19 PM

EV training is irrelevant as far as contests are concerned. It only matters as far as battling other players. This sticky should have all of the information that you need regarding EV training.

jigglyppuff8 March 13th, 2009 2:28 PM

I'll list the differences in no particular order:

107 new Pokemon
All new region
Touch Screen Control
A new touch screen controlled Poketch that gains added functionality as you progress through the game.
Characteristics in addition to natures (Such as "Loves to Eat" or "Mischievous")
Split Attack and Sp. Atk. Attacks like Hyper Beam whose power was determined by the Pokemon's attack stat will now be determined by its sp. atk instead (since it's a beam and all?). Same goes for moves like Spark (used to be sp. atk, now attack).
New evil organization (Team Galactic)
Poffins replace Pokeblocks for boosting a Pokemon's contest condition.
New Super Contests which replace the old contests with touch controlled dress-up, dancing, and a 4-round appeal.
The Underground which allows you to dig up fossils, shards, and items called spheres which you can trade for decorations. This is also where your secret base is. You can connect to other people with this mode and do activities like capture the flag and trading decorations.
Wi-fi Connectivity which allows you to trade and battle online. Voice chat can be enabled as well.
A Global Trading Station or GTS which allows you to offer a Pokemon for a trade and ask for a certain Pokemon if you've seen it already.
Pokemon are animated when they come out of their Pokeballs like in Emerald.
The bag can now hold all items and the "Player" PC option now only deals with Mail and Ball Capsules.
Ball Capsules which allow you to decorate your Pokeballs and customize the way your Pokemon are sent out.
Pre-written messages for use in the Union Room, Mail, or Catchphrases.
A new Coin Case that allows you to carry 20000 coins. Note that the prizes will be much more expensive as well.
VS. Seeker returns from FR/LG.
Partners that team up with you allowing you to participate in Wild Double Battles.
A Pal Park that allows you to migrate Pokemon PERMANENTLY from your Gen III games after obtaining the National Dex.
A snowy area affected by hail.
Buildings and objects rendered in 3-D on the Overworld.
New Berries that allow you to reduce damage when held.
Day/Night has returned from Gen II.
Gender differences between some Pokemon. (Such as a female Pikachu having a heart-ish shaped tail.)
New moves, abilities, and items.
...And other features I'm likely forgetting.

Alternative March 13th, 2009 3:25 PM

When it comes to competitive battling, what items are defined as "Hax" items?

PlatinumDawnFtw March 13th, 2009 3:33 PM

Hax items are items that only work sometimes like the Quick Claw. That can also relate to items like Brightpowder, which lowers accuracy.

lolwut March 13th, 2009 4:40 PM

Sweeeet.. Looks like it's worth buying a DS and a game. Should i wait until platinum comes out or should i just get diamond/pearl?

jigglyppuff8 March 13th, 2009 4:46 PM

Unless 9 days is unbearable for you, I suggest waiting for Platinum. It vastly improves over some of D/P's unpolished features.

lolwut March 13th, 2009 5:16 PM

I know this may sound stupid but actually yeah i can't wait... I want it for march break.

PlatinumDawnFtw March 13th, 2009 5:19 PM

Wait until Platinum... 9 days won't kill ya, plus Platinum is wayy better. You can still get D/P though.

They take down damage each turn, the first time out though it only gains the status. Yoxic Orb gets worse each time and Flame Orb is constant damage. They are used with Facade sets, Poison Heal and Switcharoo sets.

I've started to learn about EV-training, and one question came to my mind: If I have a pokemon that has some EVs for all stats (trained normally, I mean) is it possible to just lower some EVs with berries and then raise them more in needed stats? If you get what I mean. ^^

Indeed it is. That is exactly why it is consistently suggested to use the EV-reducing berries in order to adjust an EV spread.

Help!! IV Breeding!!

I'm Wondering How To Have more than 2 30+ IV on one pokemon

ow yeah,

one more question..

so, the exact result of IV Calculating and HP is only when the pokemon reached level 100??

because,
yesterday i calculate my Lvl 50 Metagross, the calculator says that my Metagross's HP was "67/Poison"
i checked it by HPing to The Kecleon, but the result was "the Kecleon Turned into FLY Element"

ohhh my....

ow yeah,

one more question..

so, the exact result of IV Calculating and HP is only when the pokemon reached level 100??

Yes, it is possible, and competitive breeders do so almost every day. The numbers are mostly random, although the IVs of the parents influence that of the child.

Most IV Calculators are only 100% accurate at Level 100, although experience can allow a player to figure out IVs at a lower level.

Well...I'm trying to breed an Ice Punch Sneasel. It's said on the net that you breed a Male Meditite with a female Buneary, then the Male Buneary baby with a female sneasel. Meditite and Bunery won't mate though. D :
Any tips? x D

jigglyppuff8 March 14th, 2009 12:22 PM

Just use a male Smeargle in a Double Battle with a Pokemon who knows Ice Punch, Sketch the Ice Punch, and use the Smeargle to breed with a female Sneasel. Simplest way I can think of.

O :
Nice. I never thought of that. Lol, I'm so narrow minded. I'll try that thanks. ; 33

Just for the record, I believe that the Pokemon that you actually needed to breed the female Buneary with is Medicham, not Meditite. Several other Pokemon should have worked as well, such as Hitmonchan or Lucario.

Actually, there is an even simpler answer: wait until Platinum is released. There is a Move Tutor in the game that will teach Sneasel Ice Punch without the need to breed it as an Egg Move.

Lana. March 14th, 2009 6:16 PM

Can a female Pokemon and a Ditto breed?
I know a male can, but I taught my female Espeon Shadow Ball (without knowing that TM moves could also be passed on to offspring, not just pure egg moves -_-), and I'd like to be able to pass it on...

Cacttus March 14th, 2009 6:18 PM

Female pokemon can not pass down moves.

jigglyppuff8 March 14th, 2009 6:20 PM

Females can breed with ditto, it's just that the male and only the male can pass down the move. There is an exception though if both the mother and father know a move that the offspring would normally learn leveling up (but then again, it's not necessarily the mother passing down the move).

Lana. March 14th, 2009 6:20 PM

*sighs* Ah, well. I'll find another way...

jigglyppuff8 March 14th, 2009 6:23 PM

If you want another Shadow Ball TM (TM 30), you can buy another one from the Battle Tower's prize exchange, although it'll cost you a steep 64 BP.

Ru-Kun March 15th, 2009 7:08 AM

Unlike the Sinnoh dex for the national dex do you have to catch every Pokemon to fill it out or dou you just have to see them?

It is still the same, you only have to seem them

PlatinumDawnFtw March 15th, 2009 5:37 PM

Hmmm quick question.

Can a japanese movie regigigas activate the events in US platinum? I doubt I'll be able to make it to TRU for the remainder of the event.

I heard it works the other way around (TRU in Japanese), so most likely yes.

What's the best way to spread PKRS from one pokémon to another in your team?

Place the two of them next to each other and use a random third Pokemon in a battle. The type of battle does not matter, nor does whether it ends with a capture or a KO.

I have a question that seems best for this thread:
I'm trying to get a Milotic. So currently, I'm breeding for a Feebas which likes Dry Poffins.
I need to know what are the best berries to use when making a poffin. I usually only can blend by myself, but I do have a friend who could help.
I could really use some advice.

jigglyppuff8 March 16th, 2009 12:12 PM

Cornn and Pamtre work really well.

Pamtre Berries work the best. But I've used Wiki Berries in Poffins and never failed to evolve Feebas.

~GhosT~ March 16th, 2009 8:05 PM

Its me again. Just wondering if this Misdreavus is legit.

Misdreavus
Hardy Nature
LvL.22

Sp.Atk EV's - 100

HP:61
Atk:31
Defence:33
Sp.Atk:49
Sp.Def:46
Speed:47

Thanks.

Live in Color March 16th, 2009 8:34 PM

I checked Serebii's IV calculator and your Misdreavus seems to have average IVs so it seems fine to me.

I read somewhere that in order for a Pokemon to evolve through happiness (such as Cleffa, or Pichu) that in the Poketch happiness checker, they must have two hearts, not the two giant hearts, but just the two smaller ones, is this true?

~GhosT~ March 16th, 2009 10:40 PM

Im pretty sure this is true because i just had my Budew evolve, last time i checked it had 2 small hearts.

AtThisMoment March 17th, 2009 8:36 AM

So I finally beat pearl. . .

Hey guys, I'm new here so I apologize if this is a common thread or whatever and this is obnoxious, but anyways I just beat the elite four of pearl and moved over the few from ruby that I had, but now am at kind of a loss of what to do. I have the national-dex and want to just keep filling it up, but don't want to find all the pokemon by going online and seeing where each one is, want it to kinda be a surprise or whatever, so if there is anyone else out there who did this could I have some hints?? Did you just like check the swarms and then check each route to see if there were new pokemon there?? Or is there a place to see a lot more of them so you can trade for them?? I just don't know what to do, thanks for the help!

Live in Color March 17th, 2009 9:56 AM

You could always look at the Pokemon in your Pokedex you don't have and find the area that they're in, but there's some Pokemon you might not be able to find due to them being on a certain game.

If you don't want to just keep collecting Pokemon, you could always try chaining for shiny Pokemon and start a collection, or learn to IV breed and EV train and make a competitive battling team.

AtThisMoment March 17th, 2009 6:05 PM

When going to find more pokemon after getting the national dex did you guys just go to each route and try poke-radaring until newer pokemon showed up?? Are there even new pokemon on each route??? I haven't been to the new island however with the different areas, are there a lot of new pokemon to see there??

Mitchman March 18th, 2009 2:01 AM

Im getting myself a magmar in platinum. Is it possilbe to get a magmotar without trading liek just giving to hold the item or yeh have to trade it?

Mimikyu402 March 18th, 2009 3:22 AM

Nope no trading no magmortar, you need to make it hold magmarizer then trade it to evolve it

Michiru552 March 18th, 2009 8:32 AM

Pokemon Diamond to Platinum

Hi everyone.

I have some Pokemon on my Diamond Game that I wanna move over to my new Platinum Game.
Was wondering if anyone could give me a hand doing it?
I have just started Platinum today so gonna be an hour or two before I can get to trade point.

Also I would be happy to give clones of any of the pokemon I have.

Thanks.

Try using Serebii.net's Pokéarth section; it will tell you which Pokémon appear on each route. And yes, there are a lot of National Dex Pokémon on the island (the one with Fight Area etc).

Secret Key.

Since japan has gotten 2 chances of getting the Secret Key, what about us? does NA and EUR get the event? I hope we do cuz I really want a Rotom form.

There is a 147% chance in favor of NTSC/PAL versions being able to download the Secret Key at some point.

In other words, we will definitely get the event eventually, possibly by the end of the month for North American players. First, Pokemon Platinum needs to actually be officially released.

PlatinumDawnFtw March 18th, 2009 6:10 PM

Heres a weird question?

Did platinum, like come out today?

There have been multiple people here who claim to have it,

And Serebii has a whole bunch of english screenshots of the rotom event...

Weird...

DID IT COME OUT TODAY??

Cacttus March 18th, 2009 6:14 PM

It comes out this Sunday. There is a device that let's you change the language on the game, but I think you need something for your computer.

jigglyppuff8 March 18th, 2009 6:17 PM

No, it's called "connections". Sometimes, people know other people who can get access to the game early. Serebii is just one of those sites that has early access to games and such. It's really no different than gaming magazines like Nintendo Power posting screens, reviews, tips, and such before the release of the game.

Ultra Ball X March 18th, 2009 6:34 PM

I got it off the internet cuz I have one of those M3 DS things.

Hey guys, I'm new with the pokeradar so was curious exactly how it works. With pokemon that can only be found with it, does time of day matter as well. I'm really wanting a houndoom, so should i only search at night or does it not matter??

With certain Pokemon, yes the time of day does matter, but not with Houndoom. You should be able to find it at any time of day. But I think all Pokeradar specific Pokemon are found at any time of day.

Ultra Ball X March 19th, 2009 7:25 PM

yeah and if you see a patch of grass sparkle it means theres a shiny in it :D
