gengar or alakazam?

im currently only interested in training 4 pokemon, my starter, a staraptor, a machamp and for my 4th slot i think an alakazam or gengar would work nicely. for the time being im only training 4 because im lazy and want to use the last 2 slots as HM pokes. keep in mind, im only a casual player. i care little about all this breeding crap. anyway, i honestly cant decide which one i like more. ive had a lot of luck with alakazam in past games, but gengar looks pretty sweet and seems pretty similar. suggestions?

BlueHippo May 18th, 2007 5:57 AM

alakazam is awesome, but gengar with dream eater is pretty powerful, too. alakazam is always my number one guy, so i'll obviously go with that one :D

Storm-DC May 18th, 2007 6:17 AM

hm.. i always used alakazam and he rocked in previous games.. somehow the way the cards are shuffled in D/P make alakazam really not thát good anymore, he's just really fast (so a good special attack sweeper), but i don't know; he is somehow so weak now..

Portujesus May 18th, 2007 6:59 AM

Well, Alakazam has Focus Bomb now, wich makes it almost a uber. lol

focus blast.. yeah, if it hits..

Ahhh, Gengar and Alakazam... a classic rivalry. It all counts on what you want: Gengar has higher Defenses, but Alakazam has higher Speed and Attack. They can no doubt OHKO each other, but 9/10 times, Alakazam will strike first (unless faulty natures come into play).

Personally, my choice is Alakazam. He has real bad Defenses, but is fast enough to OHKO things without blinking an eye. And even though his movepool is a bit more limited, he can still make due as a fantastic all-round Special Sweeper.

Although, Gengar's Ghost typing along with his trait (my favourite: Levitate), also makes him a fantastic choice. Gengar can last longer in battle, but pitted up against an Alakazam, and usually 'Zam will win. So I would go with 'Zam. But it's all up to your preference!

Ichida May 18th, 2007 8:45 AM

My Alakazam never seems to land Focus Blast when I need it to. >.<

lanceaaron May 18th, 2007 4:33 PM

ahh ok, thanks guys. they both seem to pretty good, so maybe ill get a gengar later if its necessay, but ill stick to alakazam considering i just caught an abra.

kingofgames157 May 19th, 2007 6:18 AM

gengar FTW!

i like ghosts better

gengar is pretty fast too >.<

Typhoon May 19th, 2007 8:15 AM

I would say to go with Gengar because Alakazam is too popular (he's even on my team!).

Fiore May 19th, 2007 8:37 AM

Like the others said, Alakazam is fast and can ONKO pretty easily. When I use my alakazam against a gengar I usually get the attack off faster, and killing it with one 1 hit. Go with Alakazam.

Exactly! At the same level, Alakazam is faster than Gengar, and Alakazam can OHKO Gengar. Thus, by process of elimination, Alakazam FTW! Besides, Alakazam has a greater Special Sweeper movepool.

.Eevee-Chan May 19th, 2007 9:43 AM

i would go with gegar cause fighting and normal don't affect it. also it has good defense attack and speed!!!

ToraSushii May 19th, 2007 9:44 AM

DOesn't matter. You choose. They both can destroy each other.
Gengar Ghost, pwns Alakazam.
Alakazam Psychic, pwns Gengar cuz he's a Poison type.

chaomocha May 19th, 2007 10:53 AM

hmm

well this is a classic choosing situation
i personally like alakazam in many different aspects but gengar is pretty nice too

it really comes down to the choice between wether u like ghost types or psychic types

Samson May 19th, 2007 11:02 AM

you can just be like 20% of the people i've battled so far and have both. well... they didn't have both, but Alakazam and Gardevoir are on the same level, and so many people are running Gengar + Gardevoir combos.

gengar alone is a threat, but when you have 2 special sweepers who somewhat complement eachother on one team (alakazam/gardevoir basically absorb Psychic, and Gengar just sweeps what they can't). i have to challenge myself to make at least 2 gengar/gardevoir/alakazam counters on each of my teams.

but if you still want either one, an advantage of Alakazam is that he now has Focus Blast (godly move). an advantage of Gengar is that he has Energy Ball and Thunderbolt and is immune to normal/fighting attacks.

Since Alakazam lost the "punches", Metagross can counter him pretty well, with a 2X resistance to Psychic and the other moves are just normal effective, and will not likely OHKO it, not even Focus Blast methinks. And a single Meteor Mash from 'Gross will usually knock Alakazam and Gardevour dead. Gengar is a slightly bigger threat, of course I'm not sure how common Metagross will be in this generation. Used to be an extremely common one in the last.

Samson May 19th, 2007 11:44 AM

oh metagross is very common as well. i usually have something with Will-O-Wisp to take care of him.

thing is... i don't like metagross.

spike6958 May 19th, 2007 1:12 PM

Alakazams great attack and speed and his recover ability more than makes up for his low defence, i have one on my team and he just owns everything he sees, he is the best choice although if i where you i would have both to balance it out

Ichida May 19th, 2007 1:15 PM

Alakazam's not built to take more than one or two hits. I'd rather spend its turns sweeping than stalling with Recover.

Faceless* May 19th, 2007 3:14 PM

Hmmmm, they do both counter each other, Gengar gets killed from psychic, and Alakazam gets killed from shadow ball, but nonetheless, i would say gengar with its destiny bond, and curse :P

Cema May 29th, 2007 1:53 PM

Gengar and Alakazam? What about Gardevoir? It's got both defense and damage!

kewlgabe May 29th, 2007 7:59 PM

Alakazam because he can OWN the crap out of Gengar. :)

Paranoia May 29th, 2007 10:28 PM

Meh, Gengar is cooler, And mine usaully kills most alakazam's he goes up against, but usaully I always switch my meta in when I see alakazam, scares them away, or I get to kill them, Unless they have focus blast :(
