So slow!
Right, so has anyone else noticed how annoyingly slow Diamond and Pearl are?
Walking is slow, running is slow, surfing is slow, battling is slow just...everything seems to move at a snail's pace compared to, say, FireRed/LeafGreen. I mean, I still play the game avidly, but I was so disappointed to Surf for the first time, only to realize that they slowed it down again. I loved surfing quickly in Ruby and Sapphire and I thought it was one of the best improvements in the generation. The bike, even at its fastest setting, seems really slow to me too. Trainers take longer to waltz up to you once they spot you too...and don't get me started on the text scrolling. <_<; I know it's not just me because I've seen other people complain about this. Anyone have an explanation to why Nintendo would slow them down like this? If anything, you'd think they'd speed everything up. =\ |

Here's a tip:
Don't go up to the Great Marsh and move up where you are one step away from the grren guy, that takes long. Yes, this is really slow. But I'm not one to complain. I like how Surf hits EVERYONE, it's more realistic, but less helpful! :D |
Here's another tip: USE THE BICYCLE.
|
At first it was hard to get used to since I would speed through on my emulators, but now I love the game so much I don't mind the slow aspects of it.
|
Yes I agree. There are many parts to the game that seem really really slow and kinda makes me rather play this on a emulator when you can speed up the game.

I know what you mean. it really is annoying. but the good news is that you can run in houses and stores and other places that you couldn't run it the other games. but you can't bike through the bulidings to the next city which is annoying

Yeah, I like it where you can run everywhere now. But yes, the game seems to have slowed down. I'm not even in Eterna City yet so I don't know how slow Surf is.. :P
|
I know what you mean, I haven't played my Leaf Green in sooooo long and then today I played it to get stuff for Pal Park, I thought there was a speed hack on it. Then I realized it didn't, it's just that DP is hella-slow. I kinda didn't wanna play Diamond after realizing how slow it compared to the GBA series, but I still played it later...much later...I had to try and forget the speed difference, lol.

I noticed it when I first started playing, but not really anymore. Honestly, I don't see why anyone would care that much, it's not like it's impairing the overall quality of the game.
You've got to realize that the maps are a lot more vivid, detailed, and have 3D aspects, and they places some degree of strain on the speed since, well, this isn't a GBA game where its only a few pixels here and there which doesn't really involve that much loading. Like mentioned, you get used to it, and it's one of those things you need to accept. |
What I can't help pointing out is the presence of lag in certain areas of the game, especially in Route 210, where the heavy rain seems to see a framerate drop. It's really noticeable when riding the bike in that route.

it's funny how the rock climb animation is so quick, and pretty cool-looking, but everything else is slow.

I knew it was slower than previous games, but I didn't realise just how slow it was until I went back and played a bit of Sapphire yesterday, and everything seemed to be on fast forward after playing Pearl. Quote:

In addition to actually being slightly slower. |
I find that most newer games are slower... Although I haven't played D/P yet.
Take Spyro for example. The PS2 versions were heaps slower than the PS1. Maybe it has something to do with graphics or they think that people will spend more time on it. Or maybe, they get them odd complainers saying it's too fast. I guess all Nintendo is trying to do is please someone. But you know that saying: You can't please everybody! |
i like to think of it like watching a silent film from the 30s and 40s and comparing it to a whole series of movies in the 2000s. older cameras caught less frames per second and had a lower quality which causes things to move at a faster pace. newer cameras catch many frames per second and catch every detail.
the GBA games had less graphic detail so it made it easier for the graphic artists to animate the fewer details with fewer frames. D/P on the otherhand, is a total upgrade in terms of graphics, which makes it more difficult to focus on the myriad of details in the many frames. aside from that being said, the surfing takes WAY too long =/ |
Uh, well, there IS a fast text button in the Menu. Where it says options, and then somewhere between the bottom and middle, it says "Text Speed" and then select fast and the text speeds up. Seems fast to Shift. There's one part that's speeded up. But uh, try it.
|
I too have noticed a change in the game's pace, but I rather enjoy it. The walking/running speed is slower, which not only adds a little more realism to the game, but also adds to Sinnoh's sense of scale.
What bothers me, however, is the battle speed. I frequently end up turning off battle animations because it's taking too long to level my guys. |
The only thing that bugs me about the speed of the game is scrolling but ive gotten used to it already so it doesnt really matter to me.
|
You do realize that you can make the text scrolling faster in the options, right... And I don't think it's that slow. The bike isn't as fast as I like, but you can very easily get used to the speed to the point where it doesn't seem slow.
