Should summer vacation be longer?

Lets see, i think it should... wadda bout u?

Flaming Torchic May 12th, 2004 3:55 PM

Obcviously you know that everyone that is going to post in this thread will most likely say yes, and I shall say yes too. =P I think that after working non-stop, week after week, we deserve a longer break. There are a lot of students that work their butts off every time they go into school just so they can pass, and always do their projects, just to reach those two months without failing any classes.

TRIFORCE89 May 12th, 2004 3:59 PM

In a perfect world Summer vacation would be the entire season of summer and winter vacation the entire season of winter.

Kayleigh May 12th, 2004 4:01 PM

Well... I couldn't really say, because I don't go to a public school, and my days aren't as stressful. But from what I've seen, they really give you too much work in public school. I mean, a lot. There are probably about a billion pieces of paper in my cousin's binder, just for homework. So yes, I do think that the kids deserve a longer break. They're just forced to spend so much time in one building, and they never have time to do anything at home. And when they finally do get home, it's almost time for them to eat supper and go to bed. =\

Yeah I would defiitely have to say summer vacation should be longer! Not only do I get out of school June 21, but I go back August 30! That's just barely two months of no school. Barely! The school year is just so long and stressful that I think both students and teachers deserve a longer break. I think the school year... at least for my school... should end earlier. At this time of year is when we all stop caring and would much rather do other things than our schoolwork. Especially on days like today where it gets above 90 for the first time since August...

You are so lucky ¬¬ Here in Brazil... summer is in December... Now in July... only a two week vacation... No! They have to be shorter! I cant stay more than 20 days out of school! In one month w/out school and i start to do crazy things! *remeber the Throw-Grass-In-Your-Neighbor* Waaa!

katfox2 May 12th, 2004 4:25 PM

Well, yeah!!!

What do you think? :\
Of course I would like to have a longer summer!!!! (duh) :laugh:
Who wouldn't??? :D

Legendary_Pokegirl May 12th, 2004 4:30 PM

i love school! it's time to play pokemon and not get yelled at by my mom for being lazy! (i'm a bad kid, but in an "i'm totaly devoted to what counts" sort of way) though, summer has it's advantages too. (it's the only time i get to see my girlfriend) so, my final answer is "what's it to you?"

Kairi May 12th, 2004 5:08 PM

I’d… say no. If people all took some form of summer school, they could get a more complete education, and reduce stress during the school year. I am too lazy to do so however. -.-;;

jscn12 May 12th, 2004 5:10 PM

Of course it should be, I really dislike school becuase my friends aren't there, but thanks to going to a stupid jock school I don't get to see them during summer ever either. O well...

ryan May 13th, 2004 5:55 PM

ya... they make you play volleyball all year... that's so lame. i only practice during practice. i love my team, so easy and laid back. on the last practice day we went to 711 and bought slurpees. so, just transfer to our school. you know you want to. we start the school year later, so you could... theoreticly transfer after you finish this year and get a longer summer! *so cool*

Scyther5 May 13th, 2004 6:04 PM

Well to most people thats a no brainer, but for me its pretty hard.
In the summer theres no school which equals no work which equals fun,
But aslo in the summer most of my friends are gone and im loney, so school is good
for friends, so Its really hard to choose.

22sa May 13th, 2004 6:27 PM

I say yes, if we seriously can't have shorter school days, then we need more breaks. I hate sitting in classes all day, there's no way I can pay attention for more then 10 minutes without a break, so much time is wasted in my classes that way. More free time, less class time, more effective class time.

...x_X;; I'm scared again. We're the only people saying "no" so far. x.o;; It's that... mind-ready thingy again. XD;;

Anyway... I said no. Why? If the summer breaks were longer, you would just end up forgetting more of the things you learned the year before, putting you at a disadvantage for the next year. Not only that, but with a shortened school year, schools would likely have to increase their hours. Meaning instead of going to school from, say, 9AM-3PM, you would be going from 8AM-4PM or something like that. Plus, Christmas and Spring Breaks would probably be shortened to make up for the lost time.

x.o; Then again, I don't really care to begin with. My summers are always very stressful since my parents love to drag my brother and I on stupid vacations. This year I'm also taking summer school, so my summer will really only be one month anyway. And if you only count the days where I get to spend free time at my own home all day... probably a mere 2 weeks of vacation. o.o;;

Frostweaver May 13th, 2004 6:39 PM

No is my choice. If summer is longer, then the ordinary school days are even longer, making it even worst for students as they'll have more classes to go through, and more likely to have tests (due to the lengthened time of the day). But their study time has been cut down due to a longer school period. What does this means?

We are screwed.

And since our marks are so low, let's go to summer school!

So in the end, "same difference." It's all about school and more school. *OSA Brainwashed*

lol o.o, if you're even remotely good at forgetting school stuff, you'd be forgetting throughout the school year too. http://www.pix8.net/files/tongue3.gif

Cherrim May 13th, 2004 6:44 PM

Not necessarily. I would expect that one in a school environment would be able to retain information easier since you're reviewing it everyday. Even in semester systems, you'll usually have friends who are taking the courses you just took, so it still stays sorta fresh in your mind. But even so, I just... wouldn't want any extra vacation time. XP The faster I get school over and done with, the better.

...although, I might be putting too much thought into future benefits and not enough into my own personal opinions right now. The kid inside me wants summer all the time, of course. X3;;

Longer summer doesn't necessarily equal longer school days. At least it shouldn't seeing as Edmonton managed with that 3 week teachers' strike a couple years ago.

jokestr2004 May 13th, 2004 6:48 PM

Of course its true that we learn more and remember it better if we have more school, but come on! That means more stress and worrying, at least for me. I've anticipated summer since the first day of school!

True also that you get to see friends at school, but my friends at school are very annoying and torture me to do things for them... like extra homework, so I'm starting to hate them, so yes I need more summer!

Cherrim May 13th, 2004 6:49 PM

Nova Scotia, in light of the hurricane and the major snowstorm, was discussing either extending school days, adding school days to the year, or starting Saturday school to compensate for the days missed during those storms. :\ So really having extra days tacked onto summer vacation would have to have another, less positive effect, too. A teacher strike may hinder the running of a school year, but that's something which is more or less unexpected... if a school board planned a longer summer in advance, they'd have to make up for the lost days somehow...

edit: *saw other post* X3; Lol, some of my friends pester me for homework help. o_O Especially my one friend (who refers to me as her slave XD)... I'm often doing her math homework for her. :o Another reason I would want a longer school year is because it means more potential "customers" as I'm hoping to land a job as a tutor or something. <3 $5 an hour to get people to understand simple concepts? Yes please~

That's the thing... the school board should improve its standards.

Cherrim May 13th, 2004 6:53 PM

Some people do... but as the "cool" thing now is to be stupid... it's harder to find people that do. I go over things that I don't understand whenever I need to... and I know a lot of people who do the same. Besides, when I said that, I was referring more to how you go over things in class with your teacher and stuff. ^_^;

edit: Gah! Too much editing. XD; I also agree with the school boards thing. =\ I may be an inexperienced student merely in grade 9, but even I can disagree with how things are run. I wish my school board would get its act together and offer some of the courses online like the other school boards in the area. ~_~; Plus, it's annoying to hear "teacher strike!" in the news every few weeks. :\
