I have some questions

1. If you join a site and someone makes you the co-admin do you help pay for the site also?

2. Do you have to have/use a server to have a forum?

3. How much does a server cost?

Cherrim May 13th, 2004 12:51 PM

1. If you join a site and someone makes you the co-admin do you help pay for the site also?
Not necessarily... it would be polite, but I'm sure things would be worked out so that the other admin pays for the site, and you mostly maintain it or take care of certain things... :\

2. Do you have to have/use a server to have a forum?
Well, not really. I'm not sure if you mean hosting it yourself over using a remotely board or if you mean actually buying a dedicated server. If it's the first of the two, then hosting your own does help. You get more flexibility and it's just easier to maintain, in my opinion. But as for the latter, a dedicated server would certainly be nice since you probably wouldn't have to worry about going over bandwidth limits or being slowed down by other users.

3. How much does a server cost?
I'm not too sure on this. It really varies depending on your needs. Plus, I'm not the best person to ask on this aspect.

1. If you join a site and your co-admin, you usally don't have to pay for the site. But if it is a big site, then maybe you could help a little.

2. Yes forums need to be run with server or host. - But you can go to www.invisiongfree.com and www.phpbb.com and they have free ones, but with adds.

3. Yes servers do cost money, but your better off going with a host. A server cost about 300/mo (thats what i'm paying), but that means you can host basically anyone at anytime and host anything lol. But your better off going with a host like www.ppnhosting.com Its only about $12/mo and they give you what you need.

Deoxys55 May 13th, 2004 12:58 PM

Okay thanks 'cause someone asked me to be a co-admin but I didn't want to have to pay 'cause I currently don't have a lot of money. LOL

Thought I'd add a bit...

1. If you join a site and someone makes you the co-admin do you help pay for the site also?
Eh, depends. Ask them, they'll tell you if they are expecting for you to pay or not.

2. Do you have to have/use a server to have a forum?
Uh, yes. You have to use a server for anything that you want other people to see on the web.

3. How much does a server cost?
Eh, depends. If you buy hosting from a company, you can get a pretty good deal. You could buy a dedicated server for like 250 a month, and you get basically unlimited whatever. Or you could build your own server, and then it's basically free, you're just paying for the parts and the connection. :D

Okay, about the forum....

NO, a Server is different from webhosting. A server costs an ungodly amout of money. Hosting is generally cheap like hostxg.com is 4/mo

Geometric-sama May 13th, 2004 8:51 PM

Building your own server is good but it's impossible here in Australia, max affordable upload speed is 256k which is terrible XD

aRedMoon May 14th, 2004 12:28 PM

Actually, PSB, webhosting is just someone else's server. :P

...I had 256K upload. And a server. ...now I'm getting like 600K upload. Not quite sure what it'll be! ^^;

Host XG is unreliable(from what I hear) and you dont get much, gopowerhost.com is the best IMO

Simone May 14th, 2004 3:07 PM

Yeah, there good. I don't have to worry about hosting as i have my own server, but i will look around for some people for you.

But there is always free hosts, that will host servers and what not, but you will need one that allows mySQL dbs.

aRedMoon May 14th, 2004 4:01 PM

I've heard of a free mySQL hoster, you could look into that.

If I could only remember the URL... >>

Blitz~2005 May 14th, 2004 4:08 PM

i use hosting 4 my forum i used 2 use myfreebb but that sucked and kept muckin up so now i use www.invisionfree.com

aRedMoon May 14th, 2004 4:18 PM

blitzballchamp, no advertising forums. You need to take that forum link out of your post.

Blitz~2005 May 14th, 2004 4:24 PM

sorry i didnt know it wasnt really an advertisement it was just an example but tis out now sorry :P

aRedMoon May 14th, 2004 5:01 PM

It's okay. We all make mistakes. ^^;

Simone May 14th, 2004 6:00 PM

JKaizer, thats allowed. He was telling someone a free forum hosting site. Its helping someone out so its allowed.

As long as its not a Pokemon forum or gaming forum its not ok. But if its a link to a site that hosts free forums its ok.

If you do get a forum from one of these sites, don't tell use here please.

Okay, more questions..
How much does a StaticIP Number cost?

Is there an age limit to fourum owning?

Cherrim May 31st, 2004 5:48 PM

I dunno what a StaticIP number is, so I can't help you there. But there is no age limit to owning a forum. You could argue that it's 13, since that's the standard age you need to be in order to divulge information about yourself to the online world, but no one every listens to that anyway. o_O

aRedMoon May 31st, 2004 6:38 PM

StaticIPs prices depend on your ISP.

As for forum owner, no.

What the...? That has nothing to do with the topic at hand as far as I can tell.

Geometric-sama June 1st, 2004 7:43 PM

Some ISPs give you a static IP standard. You can always use a dynamic DNS pointer to host on a dynamic IP.
