It helps to know what kinda of connection you have, what kind of OS you have...

I'm pretty sure Apache would work for ya.

(And just to let you know, a server kills you connection and really tears down on your computer)

First you have to cheak with your ISP. You can get in a lot of trouble with your ISP if it doesn't allow you to run a server. Also it isn't a good idea since it will be really slow. There are also sercuity holes you will have to worry about and hackers. You'll need to leave your computer on all day and you'll need at least a Gig of RAM. So running a server on your computer is not a smart idea.

Now for running a server for your own testing purposes, you probally won't have to worry about most of the above things.

i have 20gigs memory windows 98 and xp and a cable connection

aRedMoon May 15th, 2004 10:16 AM

Eh. Linux is better for a server...

But I think Apache runs on Windows, so try that.

Cherrim May 15th, 2004 10:53 AM

Yeah, Apache runs on Windows, but not to its full extent or something like that. I installed it so I could test PHP things without having to spend all that extra time uploading pages just to see if things worked. o.o;

aRedMoon May 15th, 2004 11:12 AM

So it does run? Wasn't quite sure on that. ^^;

Methinks I'm gonna install Apache on my computer... if I ever get enough space. :P

Simone May 15th, 2004 2:11 PM

Ok, FIrst off, i have my own server and along with PPN i can help you here.

First off talk to your ISP, you will need some sort of switchbox to switch from server to computer. Second off you will need a firewall router, it will help you keep the server running. Windows 98 will not work on a server, and Cable isn't that fast for it. I suggest Linux feora Redhat and at LEAST a T1 connection.

Now, then you have to thing about installation and OS for the server. Will it be running a WHM and cPanel, and are you willing to pay $1500/yr for this OS. What kind of server are you looking for? What speed, but another thing.. what do you need it for? You do'nt have a big site that takes up alot of BW, and a server costs and arm and a leg, so basically, you should just buy hosting, it would be good enough for you.

Re:

www.apache.com - Apache.
It’s fair to say that Kyle Korleski doesn’t always start with a business plan. Based in Houston, Korleski has been a website developer, designer, and publisher for years, and is an active blogger as well. One of my sites, www.kyletech.us, is all about pokemon
. Nearly a year ago Korleski began posting messages about this growing consumer electronics category, including notes on Pokemon features, shortcuts, new models, reviews, hacks, and PVR industry news.

Challenge
Korleski didn’t intend for KyleTech, Ltd. to become a business. But its popularity grew – and he wondered if there was a way to cover costs for hosting and storage. “If running ads could pay for the site because 1ASPHost is acting like ****, that would be fantastic,” he recalls thinking. But as rule, Haughey and his blogging circle did not like the oftenirrelevant, obtrusive nature of most online advertising. “I didn’t have a clue about how to find decent advertising for the site,” he says.

aRedMoon May 15th, 2004 6:50 PM

TeamRocket, what did that have to do with anything? oO;

And a 256k upload speed is -okay- for a server, you can get a somewhat decent connection to others. But you'll want a real fast one if you want to get happy visitors.

Simone May 15th, 2004 6:52 PM

Kyle, what the **** did that have to do with anything? If you EVER post another pointless message again, i will report to the admins.

aRedMoon May 15th, 2004 7:01 PM

Wow... language Simone... >.>

And how fast is cable, just out of curiousity?

Simone May 15th, 2004 7:03 PM

I said H E L L nothing else lol.. I'm not sure. I think its like 1022/512 so about 1mb/s. Its pretty quick. But I wouldn't host a server on Cable. T1 at minimum

aRedMoon May 15th, 2004 7:07 PM

Cable would defiantly work... >.>

I have a stable server running on 256k upload, so meh. And people on cable can get a good 30 kbs download speed, so I'm content with that. ^^;

Imakuni? May 15th, 2004 7:59 PM

my cabel is 100MPS and i got Knoppix and Redhat running on my servers int he basement but i gotta ask my ISP first

Simone May 16th, 2004 12:00 AM

Ok.. Your saying all of you have a $5000 server? Because i do'nt think you guys understand what a server is.

A server is a supercomputer that runs sites. they cost alot and need special running gear to work.

Imakuni? May 16th, 2004 6:35 AM

i bulit mine. i got a 20gb harddrive 100 mps connection redhat linux and a server software

aRedMoon May 16th, 2004 8:49 AM

A server is simply a computer that's conected to the internet so that people are able to download stuff directly from the computer. To have a decent server, you need a good connection and a big harddrive.

It doesn't have to be a "supercomputer".

Simone May 16th, 2004 1:27 PM

Well, if your looking at hosting a fast site, or something like that the best option is a fast server "super computer", but i guess your right.

20gig HD? thats not much... lol mines a dual 120gig. So 340gig.. :)

aRedMoon May 16th, 2004 2:43 PM

Why would you even need that much for a site?

I have a 120 gig and I doubt I'll ever use 50 of those...

...unless of source I use up 100 of 'em for storage. XP Burning takes tooo long.

jj984jj May 16th, 2004 3:07 PM

Well I guess it all depends on what your hosting? I mean what kind of media do you plan to have on your site? If Simone plans to host episodes then she is set. :)

aRedMoon May 16th, 2004 3:23 PM

Yeah, but do you really need 240gig to host episodes? I doubt she's gonna be hosting the entirety of Pokemon. o.o;

Imakuni? May 16th, 2004 4:50 PM

on my site now i barely use 10 meg if it wasnt for the downloads

Geometric-sama May 16th, 2004 8:46 PM

Once your site builds up you use a lot, not including my galleries on Patamon's World I use about 50 MB and I don't have any media files though. Simone, what kind of affordable connection did you manage to get for a server in Queensland?

Simone May 16th, 2004 9:43 PM

My server is hosted at the university, It runs on a OC-192 connection. Dual gigabit ethernet (2000mb). Its fast.

Also, i will be hosting media, but also, i'm hosting other big sites, (like dadragonz.com) so that will be good with a big HD.
