You can emulate a PC with a program like VMWare or VirtualPC.
Thats what I'd do.

Or you can use a special 'live' distro of Linux such as Knoppix.
Live Distros run entirely off the CD and RAM, and never touch your HDD.

ok... this can be closed now... i got my knoppix running... thanks

Kairi May 19th, 2004 2:48 PM

It doesn’t have to be closed; I mean people might want to discuss Knoppix. If you really want it closed we can, but otherwise…

I’ve run Knoppix. A bit annoying that it has to read off the CD so much, but it’s a good start. Though… really not for the beginner, even though it comes with some Windows replacement programs like the GIMP and OpenOffice

Imakuni? May 19th, 2004 2:52 PM

oooooooooooo. ok... ive also got a distro of Fedora... yeah btw can you rename this to linux discussion???

Kairi May 19th, 2004 2:55 PM

Sure can~ ^_^

I’ve only played around in Linux, never really seriously learned it. I know it’d be a good idea, especially for the fields I’m looking at. But bah, I’m so lazy. ^^; I've got a couple Linux friends to help me though.

Imakuni? May 19th, 2004 3:20 PM

linux looks cool. its like mac os but it doesnt cost so much and doesnt stink! but seriously knoppix is awesome. i really like it. i might throw it onto my pentium (eeee... old!) and play with it but until then i am running it on my celeron.

I have no idea how the Linux operating system looks like; only knew that it is used for webservers. Does anyone have a screenshot of it? I want to know...

Frostweaver May 19th, 2004 5:07 PM

All I know is that I am going to keep it far away from me... as if Window is not hard enough o.o;

Sakura and Espeon May 19th, 2004 5:15 PM

I have no idea about it also.... >_<... but I heard bad things about it though/.

Frostweaver May 19th, 2004 5:22 PM

nothing is really bad about Linux... just that it's really for computer geniuses only, and not exactly the most newbie friendly thing ever (then again I don't consider window as that friendly either...)

Sakura and Espeon May 19th, 2004 5:27 PM

Not user friendly... but Apple is more userfriendly... ^_^

Purin May 19th, 2004 5:30 PM

I'd never have a chance to see an operating system other than Windows for myself --;; Most home computers here run on Windows. I have yet to hear anyone talk about Apple computers in my school/class.

Frostweaver May 19th, 2004 5:34 PM

well if you go to school, you BETTER have windows or else everyone else will just absolutely hate working with you, due to programs not being very friendly with another if you don't have microsoft word...

Plus IB machines that check for plagarism is only MS friendly at the moment... so you MUST do your work in microsoft word font 12 times new roman or else your homework is equal to trash... at least for me that's true.

*wonders how people without window will survive IB*

I Agree --;;
My Win XP comp (this one) lacked Win Office XP, until we installed it. I had to use the lesser computers (Win 95/98) at home for typing homework documents back then.

Sakura and Espeon May 19th, 2004 5:41 PM

Apple can run Windows XP.... by using Virtual PC so probally students won't be hating working with you after all. ;)

Kairi May 19th, 2004 9:35 PM

Yeah, you can use VPC for the Mac and WINE for Linux if you need Windows apps. I’ll get a screenshot of Knoppix tomorrow for the interested. ^_^; Though it uses KDE, so it'll look a lot like Windows.

I love using Mandrake Linux. It reminds me of when Kenny ate AOL.

What a linues? Isn't it the boy from the peanuts?

Imakuni? May 20th, 2004 1:25 PM

linus is from peanuts. linux is an operating system -_-

aaaaaa May 20th, 2004 4:17 PM

Linux is an open source operating system released under the GNU Condition ("Freedom of Use so long as your changes are made available publicly"). It shares many similiarites with Unix, but is as different as is same.

Imakuni? May 20th, 2004 4:31 PM

i know, wait! Unix isnt the same as a Linux??? i always thought it was?!

aaaaaa May 20th, 2004 4:41 PM

Naw.

Back in 1991, Linux was reelased as a free alternative/clone to Unix, but it's been 13 years since then and both systems have evolved in their own ways. Sure, they ARE similiar, but they certainly aren't the same thing anymore.

Imakuni? May 22nd, 2004 5:00 AM

well that explains it! thanks for cleering that up!

Sakura and Espeon May 22nd, 2004 8:28 AM

Yes, and Windows XP Professional costs even MORE... than MacOSX. >_<

Imakuni? May 22nd, 2004 8:29 AM

i didnt stink it schwas possibibble.
