Splash pages

What do you think about this splash page:

The old version:

http://kyogre.pgamers.com/splash4.htm

Purin May 30th, 2004 2:49 AM

It looks brighter, and that's good, but I prefer the old one in terms of design.

Simone May 30th, 2004 4:14 AM

Ya the old one in design wise, but i guess change is always good ^^

Strider May 30th, 2004 5:41 AM

I'm still considering whether I should change it. If I can figure out a way to make the new splash better than the old, I guess I'll stick with the old splash.

pokemon706 May 30th, 2004 6:00 AM

I don't use splash no more it lowers your search engine ranking.

ashley03 May 30th, 2004 6:06 AM

interesting.......*writes down for a future site of mine*i learned something over summer break!!!(there's still hope!!!)

pokemon706 May 30th, 2004 6:16 AM

They lower your ranking b/c to get to your site the spider has to index splash and your main page, and being the splash is the first page, if it doesn't have content on it (most splash pages don't) it will simply skip the next page or not but much effort into it. I have lots of experience with search engines.

aRedMoon May 30th, 2004 7:58 AM

Then just trick the search engine. ;P

And the old one is better design wise.

katty May 30th, 2004 5:01 PM

yeah, normally if you dont have splash you'll appear on search engines more often.
just dont put the splash on your first page though..

Geometric-sama May 30th, 2004 5:03 PM

The old one is better, I think. It's better designed, the new one looks like it was made by an amateur designer. The old one is more sophisticated.

Simone May 30th, 2004 5:08 PM

Yeah, go old.. Or just change it to a completely new design.

Also, on the search engine when you search all my keywords i'm high up anyway so it doesn't really worry me to much :P

Imakuni? May 30th, 2004 5:09 PM

i like the old one imo. however the newone is always good for change. on my site i killed the splash page and made a preloader

How do you trick?
Hm...maybe add words on your splash page?

aRedMoon May 30th, 2004 5:14 PM

Ever see the sites that have a huge paragraph of junk on their splash pages? That's how you trick it.

Purin May 30th, 2004 5:17 PM

Good idea, I was thinking of doing that to my splash page, since my news page is going to be a .shtml. I dislike splash pages, actually.

aRedMoon May 30th, 2004 5:44 PM

And if you do it right, you could do like size one font, and then make it the color of the background, it won't bother you visitors then. ^^;

Geometric-sama May 30th, 2004 6:39 PM

Although I don't really like that, it's kind of cheating. My site is high for "patamon", but not for anything else. And TPP isn't high for *anything*.

aRedMoon May 30th, 2004 6:48 PM

Well, you could put a few keywords in there or something. Just to bump it up a few notches.

Geometric-sama May 30th, 2004 7:20 PM

Fair 'nuff, but no one wants to link to TPP anyway. You want to know my opinion? Pokémon webmasters are a lot tighter than their Digimon counterparts. When I opened PW, I got affiliation with three big sites straight away, but with TPP all the Pokémon sites around have ridiculous hit requirements. They don't care how much work you put in, or how much potential the site has. All they care about is hits. I mean, how am I supposed to get that kind of hits if no one will affiliate with me anyway? o_O

aRedMoon May 30th, 2004 7:22 PM

You need a domain in the Pokemon world I guess.

And the Digimon world is populated by older people too, so that might have an impact.

pokemon706 May 30th, 2004 7:25 PM

google is smarter than that, there bot looks at the bg color of the page and the font color, can bet u banned.

Geometric-sama May 30th, 2004 7:28 PM

Fair enough, I guess older people are less impetuous and more given to looking carefully at the sites. Although Tim (Casey, the webmaster of AE) is only a couple of years older than me I think.

aRedMoon May 30th, 2004 7:29 PM

Eh, it's not only google that searches. There's Yahoo, Altavista, etc.

-Chris- May 30th, 2004 7:30 PM

Where have all the nice Pokemon webmasters gone?
Well if you can't affiliate with the big websites, use my policy: affiliate with as many of the small ones as you possibly can XD.
Also if you apply and don't have the right amount of hits, they may accept you anyway. My former host, Pokecastle, was an affiliate of PPN, and only had about half of the hits needed to be an affiliate. So you might as well give it a shot....

Geometric-sama May 30th, 2004 7:37 PM

I might, but I just don't want to be flamed at by people saying "haven't you read the rules?" And I don't even have half the hits... more like an eighth of the hits :(
