Stereotyping

Stereotypes... you know them, you've heard of them, you've seen them on the media. Yep, I am talking about ones like dumb blondes, big muscles with small brains, or loser nerds. IRL you cannot find them, but it's how the media portrays them.

After a while, then came those new stereotypes. Thanks to a few TV specials and sites like somethingawful.com, now anthro artists were being stereotyped as sickos (sorry, I won't describe this, but I can tell you it's awful.) and got badmouthed by anthro/furry haters. Same goes with anime/manga artists. IRL many of them aren't into the nasty stuff (and yes I've seen them.) In fact, a small percentage of those artists actually made them look bad. It's sad how a tiny portion could be blown WAY OUT of proportion.

Why stereotypes? Do you find them offensive?

Jess May 30th, 2004 11:56 AM

Im not called any sterotypes :p o_O Im called Contact though..XD
I wear Contacts and they are blue so they make my eyes look blue.. But w/o em my eyes look tan..XD

DragonTrainer May 30th, 2004 12:09 PM

I get stereotyped, and I hate it. Just because I'm a prep a lot of people think I'm snobby, stuck up, and think we're better than everyone else, and a lot of other stuff. Truth is, not any preps I know are like that. I hate stereotypes...

Stereotypes aren't great. In fact, I really can't stand them when they are used to point out a negative aspect of someone's character. However, I call myself a nerd all the time, and I don't mind. I don't mind it when other people call me a nerd either, whether they are being nice or not, because I like being a nerd! :)

Sterotypes Must Die!!!

I totally hate sterotypes. Like sterotype of just girls (which is half the world). Like they are supposed to wear make-up and dresses and skirts and jewelry and wear their hair up and like pink (EVIL COLOR, VERY EVIL!!!) and like glitter(EVIL TOO, STICKS TO YOU LIKE GLUE, EVEN MORE THAN GLUE!!!). That is more like the exact opposite of me and I hate it. A lot people at school hate me because I like dragon, or am just plain weird. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it! Now most girls are like that, but even if you didn't want to be like that it would be very hard for several reasons:

1. All stuff for girls is pink or has glitter (most all girls clothes, everything) (If I bought any clothes, they would have dragons, dragons, and more dragons all over them, BUT NO!!! THOSE ARE FOR BOYS!!!)
2. Most people would make fun of you for being that way and hate you
3. Ya can't buy it! The store doesn't make it!!!!! (Limited too, I'm gonna kill you along with koals, JCPenney's, etc...:dead::dead::dead:
4. You would have no friends anyway cause no one likes the stuff you do.
5. There are more reasons, I just can't think of them right now.
:dead: DIE STEROTYPES, DIE!!!! :dead:

lighterhead2001 May 30th, 2004 1:00 PM

EVerything is sooo steriotypical in my family...i have a freind and i feel bad for her...my family always makes fun of her not wearing dresses and pink...i dont fight people so my uncle makes fun of me....i am to him a "Sissy" loolz he is such a fool

Xd.. I donot try to fit in. I just stand my own ground and say 'My Ground.. You cannot tell me what to do!' ... XD

ryan May 30th, 2004 1:14 PM

i don't take stereotypes seriously. i'm not at the receiving end of any, and i don't stereotype anybody either. so, i would be inclined to say that they're harmless, but i know that stereotypes are just a watered down version of predjudice which, is only a step away from hate. which we should all avoid.

Jess May 30th, 2004 1:20 PM

When I was in 5th grade we read a book called "The Things" nice title eh? Anyways the book was about how Jewish people were sterotyped back in 1930`s-40`s... Anyways the book had Animals and stuff instead of Humans in it.. It was an interesting book. O_o I also read a book in 7th Grade called "Im a Blonde haired Christan". It was basically abotu this kid that was sterotyped because: [blonde,Christian, loved to read...] I personally think people that sterotype are losers and need to get a life.

DragonTrainer May 30th, 2004 1:22 PM

Lol, where did you get that idea from? Preps don't try to fit in, we're just like our own group, but some people try really hard to be preppy, and it gets kind of annoying,

Jeremy May 30th, 2004 1:25 PM

I hate people assuming me as an Asian sterotype! People think I'm intellegent, clever, ect. Wait a sec. isn't that a good thing? :P But most of my releatives and most people on the net hate my friends because they're not "white". It just sickens me! So what they're black or Latino?! Also because people think I'm Asian, they think I don't like Rap or R&B. Well I do! Also some of my relatives can't except the fact that my second fave color is pink, they say I'm {place insult here} if I like the GIRLY color! Also I'm not a typical teenager! I HATE being called a teen or a teenager! I rather be called a crazy child! I'm to unique to be called typical! Whoo, LiL Monstä almost went off agian. Anyway to prove my point, sterotypes are just dumb.

Simon May 30th, 2004 2:42 PM

Since when was it stereotypical for Asians not to like Rap/etc? Everyone Asian in my school likes it and I'm an AzN myself. As for the intelligent, clever, etc. part, I am that. Some of my friends say I'm as smart as an AzN girl and I write like them too. Sometimes I say stereotypical things, but only in a joking way. Now calm down you crazy teenager.

I do not belive in much in labels. Labels is just something that become into being in the current american culture, so don't worry. ^_^...

I hate all stereotypes... I think they are worng and evil, I guess. It's my option, btw. ^_^

Heheh... That'd be me... I'm quite the traditional prep... Generally though, people call me a geek just because I make better grades than most and my GPA is a larger number than theirs. I find stereotyping... Stupid because it hurts people so much! This year, I thought about applying for a program at a university called Mary Baldwin. Enrolling in the school would mean I'd be going to college after eighth grade. I didn't because so many of my friends turned their backs on me and started ruining my reputation. There were more reasons of why I decided against the college program as well as several other boarding schools, but those are irrelevant. But anyway, I just believe that as much as we hate stereotypes, they are a mojor part of society...

Chairman Kaga May 30th, 2004 4:09 PM

Lucky enough for me, people know me well enough by now to not stereotype me...but they did back in grade school and they made me suffer for 7 years because of it...I hated the labels that I got...stuff like "fat kid" and "nerd" and "weakling" and all that...there's nothing worse you can be in grade school than an overweight smart kid who hates sports...that combination got me hatred for years and years...and the thing is, it surprises me how hateful small children are. They're more hateful than most adults and less tolerant of people who deviate from what they consider normalcy...it really surprises me that children are taught those things...they don't learn to hate on their own, after all. If that's the case than parents are even more irresponsible these days than I had previously imagined...

Cherrim May 30th, 2004 4:10 PM

I know what you mean, Lady Machoke. Although I rarely draw furries anymore, I have a lot of friends who do, so when I hear furry artists stereotyped so negatively, it really bothers me. The same goes for anime – how so many people think of it only in its hentai form. x_x The morning show on the radio station I listen to sometimes brings it up, referring to it as “that Japanese cartoon porn.” It’s very annoying.

As for other stereotypes, I try not to let them get the best of me and avoid any references to them if at all possible. Although, I do like to poke fun of the general Canadian stereotypes, eh? :p

Frostweaver May 30th, 2004 4:13 PM

you mean how we all live in Igloos? People seriously think that ALL canadians live in Igloos... especially gr.7 kids in France (had to do letter exchange in gr.7, and then all these french kids are like "how are you suppose to live in Igloos all day")

Relatives, or parents' friends who say to me "but aren't you a (male) teenager? So go and play some sports LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!" I hate that one the most, as it's used against me the most.

Cherrim May 30th, 2004 4:23 PM

Lmao, frosty. Are you serious? XD;; I loved the "Talking to Americans" specials that This Hour Has 22 Minutes used to do. o_O; Those were hilarious, but I won't get into it because it might offend people here. o.o;;

Bleh.. I'm far from the stereotypical girl in my area. o_o At school during civies/non-uniform days, I'm always wearing clothes more oriented toward guys whereas the girls are wearing that tight/revealing... and I never wear make-up because it bothers me. I can't rub my eyes or anything or else I'll run the mascara... or eyeshadow. Or whatever the heck it's called. o_o; Plus, all the other girls are either going out with someone or they're always talking about how ______ is so hot. 9_9; As for me... my definition of "hot" happens to be a certain anime character. *cough* XD Plus, the only guys I've ever liked, I liked them for their personality, believe it or not. Most of the people that all the girls say are hot really annoy me or something. o.o; (There go my high-standards again.) Meh, and the girls in my general area/city are a little different... but worse. o_O; They like dance beats or whatever, and I'll only listen to that stuff if it's in Japanese... otherwise I wouldn't be caught dead poisoning my mind with it unless it was actually good (meaning there would probably be a drumbeat somewhere in it XD).

*is probably talking too much*

YAY! *is glad to find another "weirdo" somewhere in the world* ^_^

I'm the same as you in terms of how bad the situation is... I don't work out unlike all other guys (equilvalent to your "makeup" thing). I always wear long sleeves (completely opposite to the summer weather and Kairi). I don't talk of "who's hotter GirlA or GirlB". I don't go to "hot or not" to rate people.

And at least you listen to music if they're in japanese... I only listen to game music/Pokemon (which is a lot more limited than you) o.O;

And I certainly believe how you judge guys... I already read over your story on you and that boy that you met in the dance (whom is the same boy as the boy in the truth or dare game XD)

And if we're comparing for who's worst...

At least...

*drumroll*

You always have a PS2 and FFX and kingdom hearts with you...

*cries*

Lol, don't even get me started on American stereotypes! I hate being seen by the world as a stupid cowboy who eats hot dogs for every meal and is a money-hungry fiend...I'm none of those things, and probably if a non-American person ever sees me the first thing they'll do is probably point at me and scream "yeeeehaw!" or something like that...it's so frustrating :P

*~Ashley~* May 30th, 2004 4:41 PM

Stereotypes are so stupid. I don't really get stereotyped... at least I can't think of any right now that I fall into. I really hate that whole "dumb blonde" thing though. I mean my hair is/was blonde. I don't really know what color it is now... but it was blonde. How a hair color affects the way you think, I don't know! But I don't consider myself "dumb" and a lot of people with blonde hair aren't... it's just a color!

Anyways... I don't think I'm a typical teen either. Like Lightning... I don't wear make-up. Usually. For more than one reason though. One, I don't have time in the morning to spend putting on make-up. I wake up literally 5-10 minutes before I leave the house. I'm serious too. And I'm never late! Another reason I don't wear it is because if I did it would get messed up so easily. I'd rub my eye and smudge it or something. I just don't see the need. Another thing that a lot of teenage girls do is carry around purses everywhere. I don't see the need for that. Why carry a purse and a backpack. And since I don't usually wear make-up I have nothing to put in a purse. I know a lot of people that buy a new purse at least once a month. Why? I have a couple... but they are only for if I go to the mall or something... so I can put my wallet in it. Nothing more really. I just don't see a purpose for bringing one everywhere. And also, unlike most teenage girls... I don't like getting dressed up. I hate it. I'd much prefer a sweatshirt and jeans. And sneakers too. I'd rather be comfortable than look good. And I hate when people always talk about how hot some guys are. I don't like guys because they are hot... but no guys in my school are really worth liking anyway. Well... the ones I know at least.

My dad and his friend did kinda stereotype me in a way once. When I turned 16 my dad was like, "Most teenagers want to drive as soon as they turn 16. Why haven't you asked to drive yet?" I don't see the need in rushing... I'm not getting a car anyway. I do have my permit... but I got it over a month after my b-day. And even though I got it over a month ago, I have yet to attempt to drive. I really don't care. But everyone else who is still 15 can't wait to drive. I don't really go anywhere anyway, so I don't see a need to rush to drive...
