Yes, it is like leftovers for poison types only. Those who aren't poison types actually take damage.

o.O I swear someone's Gengar had a Focus Sash and recovered from Black Sludge as well! No, I swear! Unless I'm going mad...

Anyway, I have another noob question.

When a Pokemon uses Substitute, does that substitute actually have 1/4 of that Pokemon's HP? I mean, say you hit the substitute with a really weak attack like Rapid Spin and it would have only lost a tiny amount of HP. Would the substitute have HP or would it die in one hit whatever the attack? Hopefully that made sense >.<

ABYAY December 24th, 2007 11:13 AM

Yes, this is why there's a Tyranitar set that just destroys Blissey. It's possible to have 404 HP on Tyranitar, thus giving a Substitute of 101 HP. This prevents one Seismic Toss from ridding of your Sub. Then, a nice Focus Punch = ouch.

Yes, you were dilusional to see Black Sludge & Focus Sash at the same time. lol

Shiraishi December 24th, 2007 11:14 AM

Nope, you have to do 1/4 to the poke's HP (or more) Thats why having 404 HP is important for sub-punching Blissey, each sub would have 101 HP and Blissey can only do 100 dmg with Seismic toss >:D

EDIT:ABYAY ish too fast.

boo836 December 24th, 2007 11:16 AM

No it does not. It gets the quarter of energy it took. And 101 subs means not 101 substitutes, submarines or submarine sandwiches. (0_o) It means the subs have 101 hp.

Edit: Lol, beaten by two people.

Lady Nicole December 24th, 2007 11:21 AM

Oh cool! Wait... does the substitute have that Pokemon's defense and special defense as well?

Does that mean Drifblim would make a good baton passer then? :\ It can learn Substitute and Baton Pass. I mean, with a set like this:

Drifblim @ a berry o.O
252 Def / 6 Sp Def / 252 Speed ?
Timid Nature
Ability: Unburden
- Substitute
- Baton Pass
- Thunderbolt/Shadow Ball ?
- Calm Mind ???

EDIT: Feel free to criticize me and call me a noob. I'm here to learn =D

ABYAY December 24th, 2007 11:23 AM

Yes Shiraishi, I'm a fast typer.

Substitute takes away 1/4 HP of your MAX HP. If that number is 360, then your Substitute will have 90 HP. If you're at 200/360 HP, then Substitute, your Sub still has 90HP. However, it has its uses.

-Prevents a nasty OHKO move like Draco Meteor vs. Ninjask
-Prevents status conditions
-Allows Focus Punch to hit with little trouble.
-You still restore HP with Leftovers behind a Sub.
-Sub may be Baton Passed to another target, holding the same amount of HP as the original substitute has

Unfortunatly, if you're burned/poisoned already, you can't do much to stop it.

for Drifblim, if it can get Calm Mind, get it Will-O-Wisp. This will keep physical attackers at bay while you Calm Mind. Shadow Ball works just fine. Sub and Baton Pass obviously. If you really wanna take the risk, you can go Ominous Wind. You won't have as much damage but if that ability of Ominous kicks in... ouch. Major Baton Pass power! However, you won't need much speed. Def. and sp. def are keys, and obviously, HP.

Shiraishi December 24th, 2007 11:25 AM

Yea..so Drifloom's subs would be easy to break. And it doesn't have the speed to BP the hell out fast enough.

[email protected]
Nature:Timid
EVs:252 Spd/252 Sp. atk/4 HP
-Thunderbolt
-HP [Ice]/[Grass]/ Shadow Ball
-Substitute
-Baton pass

My fav poke >3 *huggles Jolty* Cause a switch(like switching him into Skarm) Sub, and then BP since hardly anything can outspeed it.

Lady Nicole December 24th, 2007 11:35 AM

Ahhh OK, thanks for helping me :) But do moves like Calm Mind affect the sp def of the Substitute? If so, then do you use moves like Calm Mind before or after you make the Substitute? Or is that just me making things up? XD

Black sludge didn't exist in third gen and I don't exactly see above mentioned pokemon everywhere. Where are they? =/

ABYAY December 24th, 2007 11:44 AM

They do affect it. All statuses affected pass on with the Baton Pass and the Sub itself. This is why people like Swords Dance Sub Ninjasks. The Sub speeds up, Swords Dance with Sub protection, and if it somehow lives, Baton Pass = super awesome physical sweeper.

Lady Nicole December 24th, 2007 11:48 AM

Whoa! =O I didn't know that! Wow, thanks for helping me =D

Azonic December 28th, 2007 1:12 PM

It also passes Mean Look :D

Edit: I'm sorry, lets try that again ...

It also passes Mean Look D<

There, thats better ^_________^

I have a question.

I battled Gymnotide, and I powered up my Raikou with 6 CMs against his Cradily. Then I attack and it does a mere 31% damage without any SDef boosts. what the heck happened? Is it a glitch or something? Because I was really mad when it happened.

ABYAY December 29th, 2007 12:19 AM

To be honest, I think it was a hack of some sort. I remember a long time ago in Red/Blue versions, if you maxed out attack and hit something, it'd do as much as what a critical hit would normally do rather than doing the damage. However, this damage cap was fixed and removed.

I still think it's a hack because that's just impossible. I don't know who Gymnotide is, so I'll be clueless there.

Azonic December 29th, 2007 6:18 AM

Knowing Anti-Pop, it might be a battle over NetBattle or Shoddy. It can't be hacked. What move did u use?

It certainly can be hacked. I once battled a Ninjask with Earthquake that did 90% HP damage to my Arcanine after one intimidate. Last time I checked, Ninjask cannot learn Earthquake. This was on Shoddy.

Jordan.

Okey, I stand corrected ^______^
ish hacked Anti D:

Anti December 29th, 2007 11:40 AM

Yeah, on shoddy. I used Thunderbolt on Cradily. Looking back, I realise it resists it. Still, with SIX CMs and a STAB thunderbolt from a RAIKOU, it HAS to do more than that :/ (but I should have used HP Ice). Probably wasn't hacked, Gymnotide iis an honest person from what I know. I should probably use HP Ice on Grassers next time >:0 I'll run a few calcs on Netbattle and see what I get.

And you can hack Shoddy? Woah.
