New to Pokemon – Advice please :)
Hi :)
I recently got a DS for my birthday and when I was in town on Monday I picked up a copy of Pokemon Diamond, I haven’t really had much time to play it yet and after having my g/f teach my starting Pokemon Cut I’ve been thinking of starting again and “doing things properly” because I’m now about 11 hours in to the game, I have two Pokemon (starting one plus a geodude to smash rocks) and I feel my choices have been poorly made, Anyway what I would like you guys to advise me on is what Pokemon should I chose at the start because eventually I’m going to battle friends/family and don’t want to be stuck with a weak Pokemon, also for the starting areas what other Pokemon should I be looking to capture and how many should I have on my team? Thanks a lot :D /Shin |
Oh be for I forget I was trying to catch an onix in the mines but even when it was a fraction of HP off dieing it still wouldn’t be trapped in the pokeball, was I doing something wrong or are there different tricks to catching different types of Pokemon?

Well; yes. You will get a better diversity of pokeballs during the game (dusk ball; good for catchignat night; quick ball- best cahnce to capture when first turn); that stuff. U also need to knoiw the typ matchups. Cause if u have geodude and a water or grass starter; its not a good matchup. cause fir can't handle rock; but rock cant handle fire. But they can ban eachother weaknesses. http://www.pokemonxd.com/launch/_pdf/combatchart.pdf thas food for beginners. good luck; davadude |
I can't advise you on D/P, because I stopped at the 3rd generation, but I can explain the onix problem.
Pokemons all have a catch rate, variating from 1 to 3. The higher the rate, the harder it is to catch. As Onix is 'irl' a giant rock pokemon, his rate will be higher than the standard low rate pokes you encounter in the beginning of the game. Because it has a higher rate you can do several things to increase your chances. - Use a better ball (great, ultra, ...) - Paralyze it or put it to sleep - Reduce more HP Eventually, these increase your chances, but when it all comes down to it there is also a random factor involved. So bsicly keep on trying works best :-D |

Also regarding the starting Pokemon what is “best” to go with out of the three or doesn’t it really matter? And are there any Pokemon that are a must have in my team for the early stages of the game? /Shin |
Not specific Pokemon, but a good balance of types is important. You'll want more than two guys in the squad - maybe pick a Buizel, Budew, Starly, Sphinx to round out your team? That will give you pretty reasonable early type coverage.
All of the starters end up pretty strong, and you can trade for the others in due course anyway. If you aren't in a position to trade, I'd go Chimchar simply because there aren't any other decent Fire guys in D/P, but if you went for someone else that doesn't mean you should restart your game. |

Ok so I went for Chimchar :) but at what level does he change and when do I learn fire based moves?

^^ it evolves at level 14 not 16. My Chimchar is fully evolved and on level 61. I think Chimchar is the best choice due to lack of fire Pokemon in the main game. For the first gym I evolved my Chimchar so he had Mach punch. Try and get a Sphinx and Onix. They help a lot.

Ah, another question, can I give a name to a Pokemon I have already captured?

edit: although be aware you can't rename traded Pokemon. |
Thanks for all the help and quick responces guys :)
i have 1 last question: So far my team consists of - Psyduck lv.13, Chimchar lv.12, Onix lv.9, Abra lv.5 and Bidoof lv.9 What should i look at capturing to fill my last spot or will the ones I’ve caught be plenty for now? I know I said the above would be my last question but actually I have one more, how do I level my Abra because all he can do is use teleport (which is useful)? |
You send out Abra first, then switch it out for another pokemon, then beat that pokemon.
You see, which ever pokemon meets the battle field gets exp. points. And Abra, though on the battle field for a short time, still can level up from this. |

Most of the time I just put it to sleep with my Tangrowth, and the pokemon is mine. :P Full HP.
Zapdos must have a catch rate at 255 since it was frozen and caught at full HP. Normally most trainers won't use Burn/Poison since it lowers HP every turn. Not good for a legendary in red HP, you'll only have one Pokeball chance. |
