Re-doing my movesets

Well, I have decided to redo the movesets for my team (you can see the Pokemon I have by looking at my signature). I have chosen the possible moves and held items, and now I have to narrow it down, starting with Hitokage (Charmander). The first thing I need to know is what to do for a held item. I'm thinking of either Leftovers, Shell Bell or Focus Band. Leftovers restores 1/16th of health each turn, while Shell Bell restores 1/8th of the damage inflicted at the end of each turn. Either looks good, but which would benefit Hitokage more is a question. I also need to know something about the Focus Band. While I know it can sometimes prevent a Pokemon from fainting (leaving it with 1 HP), I need to know the success rate of it. What % chance does it have of preventing your Pokemon from fainting? And which item would best suit Hitokage (and please don't suggest I evolve it, I like Hitokage how he is)? Thanks.

The chance is 12%, not too bad but then not very reliable. I’d go with either the Quick Claw or band though, and you could special sweep I guess, or try to get off the belly drum and hold the salac berry.

For your Butterfree I’d recommended Supersonic and Sleep Powder to take advantage of Compound Eyes. ^_^;;

Jeikobu May 31st, 2004 12:45 PM

What's "special sweep"? And how often does Quick Claw let you strike first?

Simon May 31st, 2004 1:33 PM

Special Sweeping is a Pokemon whose sole purpose to to use it's high special stats with Special attacks. No idea for the Claw, I never use it. I only use Pokemon whose Speed is over 290 or can be increased to high amounts easily in one turn.

Kairi May 31st, 2004 1:55 PM

The chance of it working is 24%

In my opinion u should use a salac berry holding belly drumming charizard.

Frostweaver May 31st, 2004 2:20 PM

*can't help but advertise one of the only 2 bug Pokemon he likes*

Butterfree- [speed + / atk -] @ quick claw/leftovers
EV: Speed MAX, sp.atk or hp+sp.def
-sleep powder
-supersonic
-psychic/dream eater
-whirlwind/attract

Butterfree along with its RS counterpart are the only bug types I like ^_^;
And too bad Butterfree is just a super nerfed version of Smeragle (as Smeragle is even faster and can spore as well)

Dewgong..? I've seen someone attempt to use it in a UU team and it sucks even more than my sheer colding Dewgong...

Dewgong- [sp.def or def + / atk -] @ leftovers/chesto
EV: defensives
-sheer cold
-rest
-perish song
-ice beam

Anything with sturdy is weak to ice beam (and Magneton never have sturdy) so best of luck! It can stall out a bit more attack than you can imagine at first.

For charmander, just use a Charizard moveset on it with a quick claw instead ^_^;

Lanturn... use the standard set of twave/cray/tbolt/surf. Feel free to replace cray with ibeam though.

Umbreon- [atk - / def or sp.def +] @ leftovers
EV: Defensive
-screech
-confuse ray
-mean look
-rest/wish

Takes up more slots than toxic to work, but at the same time, you're not as steel type vulnerable as toxic is. However, any subers will mess you up. You can try to baton pass though.

Latias... it can learn too much moves o.o; Maybe people will allow you with soul dew since 3 of your other members are NU/unevolved anyway.

Jeikobu June 2nd, 2004 9:52 AM

I thought about Sheer Cold but it's too risky with only like 30% accuracy.

Kairi June 2nd, 2004 10:01 AM

Dewgong can help lure foes into using electrical attack to help Lanturn with Volt Absorb, if that helps…?

Jeikobu June 2nd, 2004 10:19 AM

What do you mean? Like in a 2 on 2 battle?

better than a few wimpy attacks that can hardly kill anything unless it's super effective.

What she means is to use Dewgong against an electric type. The opponent will think "let's kill it with thunderbolt!" On that turn, switch in to Lanturn to suck up the thunderbolt instead.

Kairi June 2nd, 2004 2:39 PM

Yeah, if you get the chance, let’s say Butterfree faints to a Raichu. You send out Dewgong, then switch again to Lanturn to get HP back.

Frostweaver June 2nd, 2004 3:44 PM

Nyah... butterfree itself is also a good electric lure =p (flying = weak to electric = thunderbolt = free heal for Lanturn) =p

Jeikobu June 3rd, 2004 2:28 PM

Well obviously I'm not just going to use Butterfree as a diversion. That's cruel. But the Electric attack switch out thing is interesting. As for Sheer Cold, it may be worth it as long as Dewgong has used Double Team enough (or maybe I'll have Blacky use it then Baton Pass, as I've found Blacky to be very durable), but Ice Beam, Surf, etc. are great attacks too.

Frostweaver June 3rd, 2004 3:16 PM

Err... what's the difference between Dewgong as the thunderbolt lure and Butterfree as thunderbolt lure? It works exactly the same, how Butterfree can also attract others to use thunderbolt (switch in and let Lanturn suck it up).

Dewgong can just sheer cold away without double team. You only have 5 PP anyway which isn't much at all, and Dewgong isn't that bad in endurability you know?

Jeikobu June 4th, 2004 6:24 AM

Sorry about the Butterfree thing, I didn't quite understand it at first. Heh. ^^;

It's just when using moves that have a good chance of not hitting, I want to know Dewgong won't be getting worn down in the process of trying to get that move to hit. But yeah, Dewgong does sound pretty durable (haven't used it yet, still need to catch and raise a Seel in Sapphire).

Frostweaver June 4th, 2004 2:18 PM

Dewgong's defensive stats have 321-384 HP, 196-259 Def and 226-289 Sp.def, which is quite nice for a NU Pokemon (never-used Pokemon). Plus, that's what the move rest is all about ;p

Jeikobu June 4th, 2004 4:44 PM

Hmm, sounds good.

I'll tell you one thing, I can't wait for FR/LG so I can teach Butterfree Dream Eater. I've wanted him to have that move for some time. However, what about Pokemon with Insomnia, or Pokemon that stand strong against Psychic attacks? What would be best in that situation?

Frostweaver June 4th, 2004 4:58 PM

well butterfree have quite low stats to make dream eater good... =/
Even though you got "Spore" on your hand, it's still not a good option... Perhaps if you're battling via link cable where it has clauses, abuse whirlwind/sleep powder *evil* Just let Butterfree stand there to sleep powder, and pseudohaze-sleep. You can also use supersonic to help out. I'll personally put on psychic just so that you don't have to put a Pokemon with 5 hp to sleep first before killing it o.o;

Jeikobu June 4th, 2004 5:26 PM

Hey I like that Whirlwind/Sleep Powder idea! That sounds fun.

I just think Dream Eater would be good in that Butterfree, not having the best stats, would be able to deal out good damage (Dream Eater does have 100 base damage), and at the same time, restore lost health. It would keep Butterfree in it.

Frostweaver June 4th, 2004 5:28 PM

Not really... dream eater does heal, but when will Butterfree ever get damaged? It's usually full hp or 0 hp for a Pokemon like Butterfree. Plus, Psychic and dream eater doesn't have that much of a difference in terms of power. You're better off relying on supersonic to protect butterfree than healing off the damage with dream eater.

Jeikobu June 4th, 2004 5:40 PM

Which brings me to Hitokage. Isn't he more of a full HP or 0 HP Pokemon due to stats? That's the only reason I've been reluctant to give it Leftovers or Shell Bell. What item do you recommend for it to hold (I've got Kairi's vote, but I like second opinions to be safe), and what would you say for a specific moveset? It's important to me that Hitokage can do really well in battle.

Frostweaver June 4th, 2004 5:47 PM

Yes... I personally prefer quick claw just to strike first to bring out the damage on Hitokage. I'll use a set of dragon dance/rock slide/brick break/flamethrower I guess...

Jeikobu June 5th, 2004 7:18 AM

Ok, why would that moveset be good? Flamethrower's almost a given but I need to know why those others are important to have.
Just an idea, but what if Blacky used Double Team enough then Baton Pass to Hitokage, then Hitokage could Belly Drum, making moves like Rock Slide, etc. as strong as possible for him, and meanwhile Leftovers/Shell Bell could restore health (the only thing with Leftovers/Shell Bell is the "Full Hp or no HP" thing).
So I guess with lower stats Hitokage has a lesser chance of striking first so it needs the Quick Claw?

Frostweaver June 5th, 2004 12:27 PM

well Hitokage has low stats because it hasn't evolved yet. Use quick claw to try out outspeed your opponent. Plus a lucky quick claw can burn those forretress before they expldoe XD

You can try belly drum/double team, but Crobat, Swellow and Salamence will be your worst enemy because all of them are common aerial acers. Keep quick claw (or even brightpowder) anyway because you're not suppose to be injured due to double team anyway.
