Since I know they can all be really good battlers, I'll judge them based on the way the Pokemon looks like.

My Top 5 favorite in order:
• 01 - Oshawott - my favorite of all starters and for my love of otters too. Its evolved form is my #1 favorite.
• 02 - Snivy - thanks to the anime, learned to love Snivy, especially Servine.
• 03 - Tepig - once again thanks to the anime, and since its from Unova, are my main reasons for liking him alot
• 04 - Cyndaquil - mostly for Quilava and Typhlosion (I learned to like them)
• 05 - Turtwig - only favorite starter from Sinnoh, and I like Grottle and Torterra's design a bit
(if I included the future 6th gen then Chespin would be 3rd - what ever its based on, its cute)

My least 5 favorite in order
05 - Totodile - I don't like reptiles much, and that 'happy-dancing attitude' in the anime made it stay clear away from it.
04 - Charmander based on a reptile are my main reasons I don't like it. In the anime, Charizard being used a lot made it another reason i don't like it a lot. It took away the excitement I had for it during the first 3 seasons.
03 - Piplup - general design of Piplup and its evolutions, and the fact that I don't like penguins at all are the main reason its down.
02 - Torchic - design first (all evo's as well). Based on a chick (baby chicken) made it worst, and I belive that non of the 'baby Pokemon' shouldn't exist for battling. They are supposed to be cute not battles.
01 - Chikorita - its the general design of Chikorita's entire evolution that I dislike
(if I included the future 6th gen then Froakie would be at 2nd and Fennekin at 5th [in this order: 5th Fennekin, 4th Piplup, 3rd Torchic, 2nd Froakie, 1st Chikorita])

Mine, going by generation (I chose a favorite and least favorite from each).

Squirtle (mostly thanks to the Squirtle Squad in the anime)
Cyndaquil (mostly indifferent for the Johto starters, but I used Cyndaquil most often)
Treecko (to this date, my first Sceptile was one of my strongest Pokemon I can remember using)
Piplup (absolutely love the Water/Steel typing of Empoleon)
Oshawott (again, another region where I was indifferent about the starters)

Bottom 5
Bulbasaur (tough call, but if I'm going with one from each generation, Bulbasaur's the odd one out)
Chikorita (never found much appealing about Meganium the one time I used it)
Mudkip (contrary to popular belief, I don't actually liek Mudkipz).
Chimchar (roughly on the same level as Turtwig, but I'm not a fan of the Fire/Fighting typing).
Tepig (don't care for its design... or it's Fire/Fighting typing. Déjà vu).

1) Torchic - Blaziken is awesome, love the typing

3) Totodile - He is a Croc, funny personality in the Anime
4) Turtwig - Like the Design a lot

1. Oshawott - Because he is the cutest, you know me lol.
2. Chimchar - It's a badass monkey and it's very good in battle.
3. Mudkip - The only Hoenn starter I loved using in an actual playthrough.
4. Piplup - Again, I am biased towards Water starters a lot
5. Froakie - Most people think he's weird, but I secretly think he's adorable.

My Bottom 5 starters:

1. Chikorita - It's offenses are bad compared to the others.
2. Turtwig - It gets a 4x Ice weakness as Torterra, which can be bad.
3. Charmander - I'm not a fan of his line, particularly Charizard.
4. Totodile - I wasn't really satisfied with him compared to the other Water starters
5. Bulbasaur - I wasn't really a fan of the Kanto starters much.

Best 5:
1. Charmander (my first, the most reliable starter I've ever had)
2. Totodial (it's so energetic and enthusiastic)
3. Snivy (a badass snake, nuff said)
4. Chimchar (Sun Wu Kong)
5. Treeko (the coolest gecko in town)

Worst 5:
1. Piplup (the entire line annoys the hell out of me)
2. Chikorita (nothing personal against it, it just does nothing for me)
3. Oshawott (I like its evolutions but Ash's Oshawott is tied with Dawn's Piplup for most annoying)
4. Torchic (its evolutions have served me well but by itself doesn't work for me)
5. Froakie (it creeps me the hell out, man)

1. Pikachu, your defence is atrocious and you won't evolve... Why do you even exist?
2. Snivy, are you a snake? Why do you have arms and legs? Make up your mind.
3. Chikorita, your evolutions are garbage. Ill designed grass dinosaurs. Tropius is a better grass dinosuar than you'll ever be. Plus he can fly.
4. Chimchar, Torchic is just better than you in every way. Look at what he does and take notes.
5. Tepig, you're an ugly bastard. You don't even look like a pig. Your evolutions are terrible. Your just not good. I was looking forward to spamming the Gen V fire starter but you let me down. I'm sorry but you shouldn't be in this game.

1. Cyndaquil - LOVE IT!!
2. Treecko - Starter in Emerald, I love the fact it's a good sweeper (sort of)
3. Totodile - Got me through SS pretty well.
4. Oshawott - Same deal as Totodile, except with Black 2.
