Started another monotype, I'm doing the water monotype now. Well I started with Squirtle and began my battle against "Red."
-
Battle 1
SQUIRTLE comes out after one growl and 7 TACKLEs later BULBASAUR is kacka.
-
I continued through for more battles. I destroyed every wild POKéMON in my way, and was about LV8 when I tried to destroy RED.
-
Battle 2
I really got my butt handed to me when I tried to beat him with a LV8 Squirtle. After my constant losses, due to PIDGEY's SAND-ATTACK and BULBASAUR's LEECH SEED. I was LV12 when I finally beat him.
-
I continued along through VIRIDIAN FOREST and battled all the trainers and crushed them, until SQUIRTLE got poisoned and died right before PEWTER CITY. I got back through and when I got to BROCK SQUIRTLE was LV15.
-
Gym Battle 1
This battle was way too easy. I just easily crushed GEODUDE with 1 BUBBLE, and ONIX with 1 BUBBLE as well. After this battle, SQUIRTLE evolved to a WARTORTLE, who is probably going to be my powerhouse.
-
Team:
wartortle.png

Turtle / Wartortle Lv.16 @ Nothing
- Tackle
- Tail Whip
- Bubble
- Water Gun
Probably going to be my main powerhouse during this region. BUBBLE + STAB is a great combo. I can't wait to see how this goes.

And I prefer Pidgeot over Fearow for the same reason I take the Snake over the Spur when playing Cave Story - Familiarity with the line, and a good experience in the past.

I wonder how many people are going to get this one. Although you win for referencing Cave Story.

But I think that the Spur totally beats the Snake. I mean, it shoots a freaking laser. Besides, you can use it to totally get rid of the "All your weapons dropped to Level 1!" thing that happens in the Sacred Grounds and the Last Cave.

  • I truly apologize for the title. I think I've already referenced that movie enough in this playthough. Anyway, we meet up with a British Galactic Grunt who apparently set off a bomb. Well, that's just peachy. Also, props to Cynthia for stopping me from catching that grunt.
  • Went through the marshy route east of Pastoria. Spent ages looking for a Bibarel for HM usage before realized that there aren't any on this route in Platinum.
  • Took that weird challenge with the Five Maids. I had to beat them in 5 turns, so that means OHKOs across the board. The damn 4th one screwed me over by using Endure. MRRGH. CHEATER.
  • Gave the SecretPotion for the Psyduck. I'm not sure why they were blocking the path, but... oh well.

I figured that I should give an explanation for my nicknames if you're interested in knowing them, because I swear they're not random. In this case, they're actually all references.

Rafiki's name is from that crazy mandrill in The Lion King, if any of you remember that Disney movie. The name "Rafiki" is also a Swahili name meaning "friend," which is also quite fitting, in my opinion.

Agro is from a Playstation 2 game called Shadow of the Colossus. The main character named Wander has a horse named Agro, and she plays a relatively big role in the game, I suppose. It's a pretty good game, in my opinion.

Dante's name is taken from the main character in the Devil May Cry game series. If I remember correctly, that name is actually taken from Dante Alighieri who wrote the Divine Comedy. I also find the name fitting for a Houndoom, since Dante from the game series is a half-demon, and the Divine Comedy is about the afterlife (one part specifically being about hell), so they all kind of go back to Houndoom's design being based off of Cerberus and being a guard of the underworld/Hell/etc.

So, yeah. That's what goes on in my crazy head.

Continued my water monotype. Ripped through the routes and Mt. Moon lickity-split and easily beat Nugget bridge. But first let's get to Red:
-
Battle 3
WARTORTLE is actually quite a beast. The movepool is amazing and took out all of the POKéMON in 1 or 2 hits easily.
-
Helped BILL with everything he needed, recieved the SS TICKET and got to MISTY with my overleved TURTLE.
-
MistyHGSS.gif
Gym Leader 2
I totally crushed MISTY here. I constantly battered STARYU and STARMIE with WARTORTLE's MEGA PUNCH and she was easily taken out in 4 MEGA PUNCH's.
-
Team:
wartortle.png

Turtle / Wartortle Lv.29 @ Nothing
- Mega Punch
- Bite
- Bubble
- Water Gun
Definately the main powerhouse of the region. BUBBLE + STAB or WATER GUN + STAB is great. BUBBLE will soon be BUBBLEBEAM. MEGA PUNCH has a high base attack and does lots of damage.

Allright, this is a short update because I did a lot but it all fell under one umbrella (mostly): Sliph Co.
-After battling all the leftover trainers, I soloed Blaine's entire gym with Communite. Surf OHKO'd everything except his Arcanine, and he intelligently used an X-item on his turn.
-went and battled all the Rockets in Sliph Co, and Communite evolved into Omastar!
-Got to the top and battled Blue, my rival. OHKO'd Sandslash with Communite's surf, then did the same to Ninetails. He sent out Cloyster, and I stuck with Communite to utilize toxic stalling tactics. Took 2 turns, because I crited with surf aftur using toxic :P. Anyways, next up was Kadabra so I switched to Toruk and OHKO'd it with Double-Edge. He sent out Jolteon, which was useless against Gritty. Earthquake OHKO'd it easily.
-Healed up and took on Gi...oh you've got to be kidding me. OHKO'd Jessie and James' entire team with Strength.
-Ok, really took on Giovanni. I used Toruk most of the battle because he's 3 levels behind the rest of my team. Double-Edge OHKO'd Nidorino and Persian, then Communite killed rhyhorn with Surf. 2KO from Toruk's double-edge on Nidoqueen, finishing the battle.
-Beat the Fighting Dojo with Toruk, OHKOing everything.
Saved Game.

Team
gby076.gif

Gritty Lv. 44
-Strength
-Selfdestruct
-Rock Slide
-Earthquake
Put Selfdestruct on because I now have other team members.

gby139.gif

Communite Lv. 44
-Spike Cannon
-Surf
-Ice Beam
-Toxic
Currently MVP of the team, He offers plenty of coverage as well as toxic support.

gby142.gif

Toruk Lv. 46
-Supersonic
-Double-Edge
-Fly
-Double Team
I was disheartened to find that I couldn't use the Earthquake TM on this guy...

I wonder if Sabrina's any trouble...I think I can just Double-Edge her entire team with Communite for backup, seeing as his special is over 9000...for a Rock-type, that is.

EDIT: As expected, Double-Edge ftw. OHKO'd Abra and Kadabra, then 2KO'd Alakazam, which used Barrier in between. The AI's are idiots...
-Suddenly I realized up next was Viridian Gym!
-Took on Giovanni for the last time. Communite OHKO'd Dugtrio with surf, and then I switched to Toruk to take out Persian. A crit Double-Edge and a Fly did the trick. Next out was Nidoqueen, to which I responded with Gritty's Earthquake (OMGWTFBBQ it survived with 1 HP! first to ever survive an earthquake, points for Nidoqueen!), and likewise for Nidoking, which was OHKO'd. Lastly, OHKO'd Rhydon with Communite's surf.
-Oh noes it's Blue! OHKO'd Sandslash with Surf, then 2KO'd Exeggcute with Fly. Unfortunately it paralyzed Toruk :(. Next was Ninetails which was owned by Communite's Surf. Fourth out was Cloyster, and I decided on Toxic stall again. This time it took 5 turns, thanks to Clamp (grr). Next was Kadabra, so I sent out Toruk for the Double-Edge and...got para hax. Kadabra got a Crit with Psychic and toruk went down. I sent out Communite to take it out because of his high special. It was about to kill me, it had done well over half with my remaining HP and...blue decided to use Barrier. i would have lost if it were'nt for the stupid AI. Anyways, it was 2KO'd by surf and he sent out Jolteon. OHKO'd by Earthquake.

Saved outside of Victory Road.

I knew there was a reason I hated the third generation of Pokemon. Too many HMs needed for too long.

To mitigate this somewhat, Flying Specialist Loli will be starting with Adrian the Mudkip sometime later today.

(Why is it that whenever I play Emerald, my starter is always named adrian?)

Going to continue this tomorrow, I've got school again so I'm going to be swamped in plenty of pieces of work to be done!

Oh, and I've realised now that I'm not using Croagunk for the monotype at the elite four. He's nigh useless and in my actual playthrough, his weaknesses really caused trouble.

I know, there's no dragon or ice userbar, I could make them if I have the time, I'll upload them if I make them.

Small update, took on the E4 after getting through Victory road and was obliterated by Lorieli. Its time for some major grinding...

I'd like to take up the challenge :D

Type: Normal
Games: Yellow, Silver, Sapphire, Platinum

Wish me luck!

EDIT: First update

Named myself Al and my rival Gary
Got Pikachu
Got my two free potions, from the PC and the Mart salesman
Did the Oak's parcel sidequest thing
Caught a Pidgey and a Rattata
Trained both to level 7, went to go fight Gary on Route to league.
Kick his ass.
Raced through Viridian forest and, after a couple of tries, beat Brock thanks to Rattata's newly learned Hyper Fang
Pidgey evolved in Mt. Moon
Got fossil and met J&J
Reached Cerulean and got pwned surprisingly badly by Misty's Starmie
Met Gary at Nugget Bridge. Defeat him and Rattata evolves

This sucks...Lorieli keeps screwing over my team with only her dewgong...And even if I beat it, Cloyster comes in and clamps Communite to death...I have nothing to take out her water-ice types. All future rock challengers, beware.
EDIT: Finally beat her, had to grind up to Lv. 60 though

Lorieli: After this, just thinking of Glacia makes me tremble...Got a lucky crit with hydro pump and took out Dewgong. Had to use painstaking stall tactics against Cloyster, toxic and then lots of potions. Took out slowbro similarly, but it had nothing on Communite so I was surfing instead of healing. Next was Jynx, and I switched in Gritty, took a psychic and lived then killed it with rock slide. Last was Lapras and Communite used stall tactics again. It got 2 crits with hydro pump, but I survived (surprisingly) and toxic took it down.

Bruno: Easy battle. OHKO'd his Onix's with surf, Hitmon's with Fly and 2KO'd Machamp with Fly as well.

Agatha: Quite a challange, largely because of Gritty's abysmal speed and special. Her first Gengar successfully got parafusion on Gritty T.T and then Golbat died to rock slide, Gritty lost confusion in the process :). Next Haunter used confuse ray (NOOO!!!) and Gritty killed it with Earthquake, losing confusion in the process...again. Next was Arbok which started wrapping me, then screeched and I hit it with Earthquake. Last was another gengar, and it missed with its attack and I killed it with an earthquake.

Lance: Led with Communite. It missed with Hydro pump, and I used toxic. Stall stall stall, gyarados was down. OHKO'd 2 Dragonites (got 3 para hax in a row on the 2nd one, and it was spamming bubblebeam stupidly) Sent out Toruk to take down his Aerodactyl, which worked out nicely. Lastly, OHKO'd Dragonite with an Ice Beam.

Blue: An intense fight, unlike my dragon challenge (I OHKO'd his entire team last time). He sent out Sandslash, OHKO'd with Surf. Next was Alakazam, it used psychic and lowered my special (not good) and I got it to 1/2 health with hydro pump. Another took it to red...at which point he used a pull restore :(. I had used surf, then survived another psychic and got a crit with Hydro Pump. Next was Executor, and I would have stuck and used Ice Beam but I switched to Toruk to heal Communite, also restoring its special drop and to kill it with fly, which worked as planned except I had to finish it with Double-Edge. Next was Cloyster (exactly why I switched to restore Communite's special) and I used...yup, stall tactics. It kept spamming clamp, which worked for me. It was doing barely any damage, and its poison killed it. Next was Ninetails, which I ohko'd with surf. Lastly, Gritty killed Jolteon with Earthquake.

LEG ONE COMPLETE!

FINAL TEAM

sigpic194203_4.gif

Gritty Lv. 61
-Strength
-Selfdestruct
-Earthquake
-Rock Slide
Definately a key member to the team, Earthquake and Rock slide were win in every battle he was in. Only one enemy ever lived an earthquake from this guy, and that was Giovanni's Nidoqueen in my gym battle with him.
sigpic194203_5.gif

Communite Lv. 62
-Hydro Pump
-Surf
-Ice Beam
-Toxic
MVP in every way possible. Insane coverage, it took down the weaknesses my other team members couldn't cover. Special was off the charts, it destroyed something in every E4 battle except Agatha. Definately sorry I won't be able to use one again in this challenge.
sigpic194203_6.gif

Toruk Lv. 60
-Supersonic
-Double-Edge
-Fly
-Double Team
It's a real shame I wasn't able to use this guy more often. He didn't have much use in the E4 aside from Bruno, but other than that in-game he was a total beast with immense attack power and speed at epic levels.

Oh god, i'm looking for my team in Crystal and it's depressing...I can't get anything good for a long time. Until Kanto it'll be Geodude and...Corsola if I'm lucky. Then I'll be able to add Magcargo in Kanto. I can't even get the best one in the game (Tyrannitar) until just before I face Red, and its not like I'm gonna do crazy grinding just to add it to my team for the last battle. Also, would I be allowed to use Steelix? I'm thinking not since it's not rock type but its pre-evo is Onix which is, so just making sure I'm not going to kill myself with a 2-man team when I reach the E4 for the first time...

Isn't Ice weak to Rock as well? I know Rollout was super-effective against one of Pryce's members...

raekuul, yes, Ice is weak to Rock. Also Nathanyiel, did you forget about Sudowoodo? And sadly, you're unallowed to use Steelix, but you can use Onix.

I did forget about sudowoodo, thanks for reminding me.

The problem with Ice isn't the type itself, which I actually do well against, it's the fact that most ice types carry water-type moves (Dewgong, Lapras, etc.) which tend to OHKO rock types. Also said rock types are often too slow to do anything about it.

You reilise that there are level 40 Larvitars in the Celadon Slot machine place, right? Only in Crystal, but those are a HUGE help. Infact, I can think of an LPer on Youtube who used one on his team.

I swept Kanto in about an hour earlier. I didn't record how I beat each the gyms, because frankly they were all a little boring. Blue did cause me a little trouble, but once luck got on my side (critical against Exeggutor, Mega Kick hitting first time against Alakazam, Pidgeot getting frzhaxed), I managed to beat him.

I am currently grinding for Red, partly in Mt. Silver and partly by beating the E4 over and over again. I've tested my team a couple of times against him, but I just can't get past that Espeon.

EDIT:

Crystal is finally complete!

The Red battle was pretty intense. I was going to describe it, but I decided to record it instead. :) Much easier than trying to remember who killed who.

Spr_2c_107.gif

Lvl. 40
- Mach Punch
- Fire Punch
- Ice Punch
- Thunderpunch
Again, great coverage let down by low special. Nonetheless, I couldn't have won without the super-effective moves that this guy held. MVP against the E4, and useful against Red.

Jonathan/Hitmonlee
Spr_2c_106.gif

Lvl. 39
- Swift
- Mud Slap
- Hi Jump Kick
- Mega Kick
MVP overall. A powerful Pokemon that could one-shot most things in its way. Hi Jump Kick was massively useful, as was Mega Kick (which dealt with various Psychic and Flying types that would otherwise have wiped out my team).

Andrew/Hitmontop
Spr_2c_237.gif

Lvl. 73
- Strength
- Thief
- Triple Kick
- Dig
LVP overall. Triple Kick was terribly innacurate and Thief was a waste of a moveslot. However it was decent enough to earn its place on the team, one-shotting Red's Pikachu and doing consistent damage against a lot of opponents with Strength.

Move me to Hoenn!

EDIT EDIT:

I've just started Sapphire. I chose Torchic (obviously) and named it Cranberry, then made my way to Petalburg to catch a Shroomish, which I haven't thought of a good name for yet. Any suggestions?

Restarted water run of Soul Silver mostly because I broke the screen of my previous laptop and got a new one.

-Chose Totodile as my starter and set off to see Mr. Pokemon
-Found out that my Totodile has a Lonely nature (yay)
-Rival battle! Lv7 Totodile vs his Lv5 Chikorita.
-Gave Rival a pounding.
-Named Rival 'Baka'.
-Was able to K.O all of the monk's pokemon in the Sprout Tower.
-Battle with Elder. I also K.O.ed almost all his pokemon with Bite.
