Unlike such places as those, Japan produces a lot of high-quality technology, mainly in the line of the entertainment industry; everyone loves entertainment, and I would have to agree with the notion that Japanese video games tend to be better. Why so many people fixate on this one country, I can't say I know, but popularity is this odd business of pressing the right social buttons at the right times so random things like Japan crop up. In an alternate universe we could all be fixated on Sweden or wherever.

I think the matter with anime and manga in particular is the way they go into themes for older audiences as well, and with the mentality over the rest of the world that cartoons are for kids, Japan is pretty much the only country to produce this sort of entertainment. Personally, I much prefer animation to live-action; isn't the idea of entertainment to enjoy some sort of fantasy we wouldn't normally live out? Seeing real things isn't very often conductive of that.

Just trying to shed some light onto weeaboism for you... Personally, my main interest in Japan is of the country's history so I can't think of any more to say. I'd still go for Japanese as one of my first choices of languages to learn, but it's no pressing matter, it's just the only foreign tongue that I find is, as they say, relevant to my interests.

@_@ I understand liking the culture.. but what I said I didn't understand was the obsession- :/ Some people tend to let it consume and dictate their lives ._.

I don't give a darn if you wanna gripe all the time about how our country's so socialist! That's just the way it is and eventually it won't happen because of the party balances!

The choir at my school have Glee parties. And the boys in the choir love Glee. It scares me, to be honest, because I can't stand that show.

I don't understand how people are obsessed with facebook. My little cousin, just 8, wants one I don't see why.

Edward Cullen. No ladies, he is NOT what you should be looking for in a man. He tells Bella what to do, who to hang out with, leaves her ~out in the open to be eaten by vampires~, creeps on her in her sleep, AND HE'S FICTIONAL.

that and football, NFL and college level. I just can't :( I try to get into it, but it fails everytime.

I don't even know what 'Glee' is, and from what I'm reading here, it's probably better that way. Anyways...
What I don't understand is pretty much the usual stuff - what ever pop musicians are being hyped right now (because, each year there is another), twilight (it seems to be decreasing at least), et cetera.
But wait, that isn't all. Mobile phones. Everyone and their dog/granny/whatever is having a mobile phone, is using it all the time and getting a newer model each year. Meanwhile, I have one rotting on my shelf for years and don't understand what's so special about these things.

Hmm... Don't suppose I've quite come across such people, then.
Sorry about my over-verbosity.

Quite a few things, actually.

  • Justin Beiber. People my age thinking a kid who looks like he's 11 is hot... is borderline perverted o.o
  • Miley Cirus. Self Explanatory.
  • Twilight. Oh, these books are so awful in so many ways that I don't even know where to begin...
  • Anime. Woah woah woah now. I don't mean all anime. I just mean anime with little point or progression whatsoever, or filled with tons a filler. Y'know, the popular stuff. Biggest offenders - Bleach, One Piece, Lucky Star, Azumanga Daioh, Evangalion...
  • Cartoon Network/Nickelodeon. A lot of people like the new shows on these channels... God knows why.
  • Converting Everyone Who's Not Christian. This is quite prevalent in my own life, where I'm told blatantly that I'll go to hell because I'm Jewish. Hrm, good thing that hell doesn't exist...
  • Silly Bands. Dear god, do I have to explain this?
  • Japan. Now, not all of Japan - I did live there for a year, after all. I just mean how people get so freakishly obsessive over the country that they want to reject their own selves and pretend to be Japanese, even though their impression of Japan is completely distorted.
  • COD. It's... not really that great imho. lol
  • Sarah Palin. Now this one mainly applies to older adults in my community (yes, I befriend those outside of my agegroup egad), but you know, she doesn't accurately represent Republicans, Conservatives or Women. Just stupid hicks in Alaska.
I'll think of others later...

-Twlight: Whoo. Sparkling vampires
-Harry Potter: I don't think it's terrible, just isn't my thing, I s'pose.
-Star Wars: Again, it's probably just not my thing. But I feel like I'm gonna get people yelling at me for it.
-Call of Duty: Ugh. Everyone's going crazy about Black Ops, but it's the SAME. DANG. GAME.
-Facebook: Sure, I have a Facebook like everyone else, but so many people are obsessed over nothing. It's an easy way to keep in contact with people, but eh, that's all.
-iPods: Overpriced with alternatives that do more.
-All the random Disney "stars": Especially Miley. She's such a terrible role model for kids and I really dislike her for it.
-Justin Bieber: Yeah. I'm honestly confused.

I will admit that I rip on people for their obsessions, but it's not serious and they know it. I don't not get any obsession, either. They are something that people just thoroughly enjoy. What I don't get is why people become as insane as they do over certain things.*shrugs* And, like Scarf said, I also don't understand why one thing can consume a person like that. Granted, I have my love of certain things that I often talk about and fantard over *cough*DGM*cough* but, well, I don't let them consume my every thought. I mostly talk about them to just annoy people cuz I have that kinda personality |D

JAPAN

Yes that's right, people. I don't understand what this country has to offer that merits people to obsess over the culture like crazy! Anime? What's so great about it- really? I love me some American cartoons but I don't go and download EVERY SINGLE OTHER ONE.

Why learn that language in particular, too? What's wrong with French, Spanish, Greek?
: |

I just don't get it. Sure you can like it.. but everyone seems to go OVERBOARD.

I agree... for the most part, but that's because I had an obsession myself.
Now I don't really get it. I took japanese not because of the anime and manga involved (Though nowadays I can't STAND when people mispronounce it and then correct your for correcting them. >:C) but because out of all of the languages open to me (other options were french, spanish and german...) Japanese was the only one that didn't bother me in some way (Which is somewhat odd, looking back, since I am at most 25% mexican.) But french I just wasn't fond of learning, german just sounds odd to me, and spanish I had come to hate because of little kids constantly yelling at me in it. (Japanese became an awesome confusion counter, especially after I figured out what they were saying)
So I do agree that people need to tone it down...

But, anywho, on the question at hand.... obsessions I will NEVER understand no matter how hard I try are as follows...
•superiority complexes - I have an inferiority complex soooooo I'm never gonna get why people obsess over every reason they can find on how and why they're better than you.
•Celebreties - "Top headline - OMG!!! -insert celebrity name here- BLINKED!" I don't really care about some singer going to the dentist and having no cavities. Whoever does is a creeper, in my opinion.
There are probably more but I can't think of any right now...

- I don't understand the obsession with Halo. I had a joke about it, but it comes off as offensive to some, or well, it might. So I'll leave this at that.

- TWILIGHT. Vampires aren't supposed to sparkle or be handsome devils. This is a freaky obsession, imo. Edward isn't even that good looking.

- Alcohol is major too. I have no drive to drink right now, so I guess that's why I don't understand. But it's like...why do you wanna drink so much that you don't even remember the fun time (and even then, you might not be having a fun time) you're having? And I'm also afraid of people putting stuff in drinks. So I'm just avoiding it; I'm not getting raped or anything cause I mean, look at me. I just don't get the hype over it.

- Japan. People are too obsessed with everything Japan does, says, breathes, eats, everything. And then weeaboos come out of it. Make it stop. :(

- Console fanboyism. If you know me, you know I stick with Nintendo through almost everything, but I'm not so obsessed to think that they win at everything. I can admit I play my 360 more than my Wii or something, but some people won't even get consoles from other companies because they're just that weird about it. If you care more about sticking to one company rather than playing good games, you're going to miss out on some good stuff. Unless you're an FPS nut which leads me to...

- Shooter games in general. If you're going to play shooters, that's fine, but please tell me you have other tastes. You're not much of a gamer if you can't even pop in an RPG or something else every once in a while imo.

- Hating on Justin Bieber and Twilight. I wouldn't have even know about neither of them if it weren't for the haters. The haters are just as bad, in the end.

- Zombies. They're in everything, I liked them in One Piece but only there did I like them (and that could be because they aren't brainless and are more of a parody on zombies). People talk about how overrated vampires are and I'm like what? Zombies are so much more popular, and I just can't even understand why. I can't wait for the fad to die.

- Led Zeppelin. Stairway To Heaven is good but the rest of their songs are just annoying.

- Summer/Spring/Warm Weather. I understand not wanting snow and ice, but those seasons are just way too hot, and tornadoes are way more dangerous than the minor winter storms we get where I live.

- Butterflies. They're bugs. Yet, I know people like my sister who hates bugs but loves butterflies. o_O That makes no sense.

- Japan. I like anime and manga but I do not see the fascination with Japan and how everybody feels like they have to act Japanese and add random Japanese words (that they probably don't even fully understand) into their sentences. So what if you like cartoons and comic books from another country, it doesn't make you a part of their culture.

- Anime girls. They aren't real, and they really aren't anything close to real. I don't see how people are attracted to them. As would be assumed, I also don't get fanservice either. It's dumb.

- Cats. Okay, the animal itself is fine. Not my favorite (dogs are better), but the obsession with people with cat ears and tails is something I really don't understand. I think this is the worst in the anime community so it's kind of related to the above one.

- Gintama, FLCL, Katekyo Hitman REBORN!. The fans' act like they are the best things they have ever seen. Gintama isn't funny. FLCL is boring, and Katekyo Hitman REBORN! is very generic to the point of fault.

- Celebrities. Why should I care about them?

- Alcohol. I guess I was crazy because I waited until I was the right age to have my first drink. In fact, I waited until three months after. It wasn't any good. I don't see how people can drink. If people want to drink lightly that is their right, but if they start trying to convince me to drink again they've taken it too far. That stuff is nasty, and I have enough health issues as it is.

Well, drinking alcohol drinks isn't really much different than having something else like Sprite or coke. For example long drinks (~5% Vol.) taste a lot like normal soda pops even if there is some alcohol in them.

Anyway, sometimes you just get the feeling "I could just take a couple too many today" after having a few first. I don't know where it comes from but that just happens :D
