Never played Platinum before and it's been years since playing Diamond, so I barely remember Sinnoh at all. Thought it would be fun to do a journal for this playthrough. So here we go!

The Adventure Somewhat Begins.

Well, Twinleaf town looks very pretty, although my blonde rival-friend Daryl seems to have a few mental issues and probably shouldn't be allowed to run around unsupervised the way he does. My observation of Daryl is confirmed when he immediately decides that we should go bother Prof Rowan, and insist he gives us some pokemon. Daryl then attempts to run through the tall Pokemon-invested grass expecting nothing to jump out at him, and tells me to do the same. When (luckily) the old professor shows up.

Rowan seems like a nice person, despite his stern expression. He didn't give Daryl more than a slap on the wrist for endangering our lives. In fact, he then proceeds to reward the crazy kid by offering him a Pokemon. I would have said something about rewarding reckless behavior, and about how this is only going to encourage Daryl to make more bad life decisions later down the road, but Rowan offers me a Pokemon too, so I just keep quiet and pick my favourite of the three.

Possibly an unpopular choice, but I adore grass types so long as they aren't Chespin. And Torterra is one of the most underrated badasses in the series IMO. Daryl chooses Chimchar, which kinda suits him, and we battle. I know that Daryl is highly impatient, so I order my Turtwig to keep using withdraw just to be annoying and make it drag on forever - it's the least that guy deserves. Then I destroy him and his fire monkey without breaking a sweat.

Annoyingly, Daryl doesn't seem phased by his first battle being a complete and utter fail, and instead uses his magic powers to zap us both back to Twinleaf town. My mother is pretty chill about the whole idea of me suddenly leaving home and going off on an adventure with a turtle. She even hands me some running shoes so that I can get out of her hair a.s.a.p.
She's great like that.

So off I go. Finally starting out on my Pokemon Journey. A great adventure awaits, with many places to go, Pokemon to meet, challenges to overcome, and.... then I bump into Daryl again.
He's gonna be along for the whole ride isn't he?

The Adventure Continues to Begin.

So Daryl did something crazy again and dragged me along with him in search of a legendary Pokemon. He assures me that our new inexperienced, low-level Pokemon will definitely be able to take down a powerful legendary, and that we will be able to catch it with ease. I stay with him purely because I'm a good friend, and definitely not because I want to see him get his backside launched across Sinnoh as a result of angering a mythical beast. So, we head to the lake.

This creepy blue haired guy is standing there, it looks like he's having a moment of reflection or reciting poetry or something, but it's not very good. He rudely asks us to step aside and leaves. It is then Daryl suddenly comes to the realisation that we don't have any Pokeballs, and therefore we won't be able to catch the legendary Pokemon after all (because that is definitely the only thing that was stopping us.) He says we should go and bother Rowan some more and beg him for some freebies, instead of buying them from the Pokemart like normal people. Then, he's off.

I had no intention of taking advantage of the professors generosity - he had already given us a rare Pokemon each, after all. However, his lab is in the direction of the nearest gym, so I head that way. My little Turtwig is pretty good in battles against the Bidoof and Starley. I'm super excited to catch a Starley later on - they just look so cool with their little white faces.

Turtwig reaches level 7, and some guy hands me a potion to promote his store. I assure him I will be a customer there, because I'm not a freeloading beggar-boy like Daryl. We make our way over to Sandgem Town, where this kid in a red hat eagerly greets me - apparently he's Rowan's assistant, and he was with Rowan when we first got our Pokemon, but I don't remember him. He looks pretty forgettable to be honest. Assistant-boy drags me into the lab, where the Professor is waiting.

The professor is my favourite person so far. He hands me a Pokedex and compliments my abilities as a trainer purely because Turtwig looks happy. Even though the real reason for that is because I was letting her snack on the fainted Pokemon after she defeated them. He then gives me the chance to name her, so I do.

Yeah I was going to go for something more humorous, but she's cute so I felt she deserved a cute name. I can be sincere, okay? Rowan hands me a TM, return, which I decide to hold on to for now. Some guy in a red hat then shows me around town... he appears to know me but I can't quite place him. He then orders me to head back to my mother for a final goodbye, and won't let me pass him until I do - great, she's gona be delighted. I head home and at first my mother is all "What? You've given up already? Fine let's just sign you up for the army." but then I tell her the story and she hands me a journal.

Daryl's mother then turns up with a package, asking if I can deliver it to him. I was planning on refusing the errand and avoiding the guy altogether if I'm honest, but the parcel feels heavy so I'm a little curious as to whats inside... maybe I'll just steal it.

When the Beginning has Finally ended,The Adventure can Finally Begin.

Hopefully this will be the last time I have to walk out of Twinleaf. The town is cute but it's beginning to lose it's appeal to be honest, and I'm fairly sure my mother is going to deport me herself if I don't get out of here.

Bayla and I head back past Sandgem, with her obliterating more Bidoof and Starley along the way. I'm beginning to wonder; is she supposed to be a tortoise or a turtle? Her body looks like a tortoise, but she has the snapping jaw of a turtle. I conclude that she is the best of both worlds and then we bump into some dull looking kid with a red hat. He knows my name for some reason - probably heard tales of my rapidly growing legacy - and then he proceeds to show me how to catch Pokemon. Because after living in a Pokemon infested world, I've never actually bothered learning how trainers catch them. The kid hands me some Pokeballs and then tells me to head to Jubilife City, which is pretty much the only direction left to go anyway. Thanks, weirdo.

On the way north I get a chance to test Bayla's skills against some real trainers, she's still got it. As we are frolicking together through the grass, the best starley in the world deems us worthy of his presence and reveals himself to us. He is completely different from all of the other Starley, and puts up an actual fight instead of just growling and fainting. Bayla gets his HP low, and then I throw his new house at him. He accepts and moves in. I name my new team member Sky - because he's a bird and I couldn't think of anything - and decide to test him out in battle straight away against some wilds. Sky's pretty good at destroying what are probably his family members (whatever, he doesn't need them any more, he's got me now) and then he goes on to win his first trainer battle where he makes quick prey of a burmy.

As we progress north, I've gotta admit that Sinnoh has some pretty interesting Pokemon so far. We encountered this cool little blue lion cub creature called Shinx. I wanted to add it to my team but Bayla got jealous and made it faint. So I guess I'll have to send out Sky next time we see one. Shortly after our string of victories, we arrive at Jubilife city. I was about to go exploring when some boy in a red hat decides it's his job to show me around. I'm not supposed to tip him, right? He drops me off at the Pokemon School and tells me that Daryl is inside. Has he been stalking us?

I'm pretty much forced to walk inside to get this kid out of my hair, and there's Daryl, staring at a chalkboard. He gets excited and reminds me about the parcel I've been holding - darn, I forgot all about it. It's not all bad though, as his mom packed him 2 town maps, knowing that he would almost definitely lose one of them. Daryl being the arrogant brat he is doesn't think he needs that kind of security, so gives the spare to me.

As I go to leave, some weird clown guy asks us to find his buddies to win a prize. I'm curious but far too eager to get to the gym. Wait, this town has a gym... right?

Geeks and Clowns

To my dismay, it turns out that Jublife is the third town in a row with no gym. But you know what it does have? Gadget-geeks! And plenty of them! In fact the entire place is obsessed with something called a Poke'tch, including this detective guy who introduces himself as "Looker" yeah... that's not creepy at all. 'Looker' reminds me about the clowns I apparently need to find, offering me a Poke'tch of my own as a reward.

"Find" is a strong word, as the bright yellow clowns turn out to be just standing in plain sight around the town. Each one quizzes me on basic Pokemon knowledge, and despite me answering the very simple yes/no questions correctly, feels the need to explain why that answer is correct. Yeah whatever, I got the Poke-watch-thing. It seems okay.

There are three routes leading out of Jubilife, so I decide to explore them all, left to right. Some guy tells me that the first road leads to a "Great Fishing Spot!" then his buddy hands me his Old Rod. Excited to add a cool water Pokemon to my team, I head over and start fishing.... and fishing.... and fishing... and then I begin to doze off when something FINALLY bites.

Yeah, it's a Magikarp... no thanks.

The second route is a dead end, thanks to mother nature and her tendency to place large rocks around, in order to keep all us travelling along the same linear path like her souless slaves. We find some trainers to battle though, and then another wild Shinx leaps out. This time, we are ready. Sky uses a quick attack to lower it's HP, then I toss a vacant house over and just like that we have a new team member! I name him Rai because urm... Lions > Africa > Sun > Ray, change the spelling a little and poof we have a name!

After the capture, we fnally we go to take the correct route and head to a town with an actual gym. I'm actually having a pretty good day until that blonde moron decides to ruin it.

Cave of Wonders

I'll never understand why Daryl enjoys losing so much. It appears that he has also caught a Starley since we last met, but it's got nothing on Sky. My bird makes quick work of his Chimchar too, and then Daryl sprouts some delusional nonsense and bolts like he always does.

We finally take the pathway to the next town, and I test out Rai in battle. The little guy needs some help at first, but it's not long until he's taking out wilds like it's nothing. We fight a few trainers afterwards, and I'm just beginning to notice how disturbingly brain-dead many of the Sinnoh inhabitants are. One guy brags about how he and his Shinx have spent a lot of time together - Oh yeah kid? Well I literally just caught mine and it's instantly turned yours into toast.

Some girl then claims that she's won a gym badge with her level 8 psyduck (which only knows scratch and tail whip) whilst showing off a pebble. And then we pass through the shortest cave in the world and another "trainer" is celebrating their "adventure" through it. What even? I'm given Rock Smash by a hiker though, which means I need to get hold of a HM Slave. Guess a Geodude will do - I don't consider him part of the team though so I won't include him in line up, he's just a helper.

We finally reach Oreburgh City, and random escort number 47 greets me and drags me to the gym entrance. (It would appear that you aren't allowed to find anywhere by yourself in Sinnoh) The guy seems proud of the service he provides, but then he's shocked to discover that another person actually made it to the gym without his help!

I see that this person is Daryl, and immediately leave the area.

Fire Pony and some other stuff.

In a desperate attempt to avoid Daryl I take a look around the town and notice that it is very rock/fossil themed. There's a museum and a coal mine, which is actually pretty cool. I venture inside only to find the rival guy from Pokemon Gold and Silver crushing stones near the bottom. Wait, his name is Roark? And he's a gym leader now? And he wears glasses? Ah okay, why not.

Silver Rival recognizes what a worthy opponent I am and heads back to his gym to prepare for my arrival. I decide to make him wait, as he will definitely need all the prep time he can get, and I mess around the coal mine for a while before heading north to an oddly-placed patch of grass.

And then I see it -

A fricken wild Ponyta!!!! Oh my life, she is amazing. I need those flames on this team right now. So I toss out Rai to get her HP low, and she moves into her new Pokeball. I name her Hot Wheelz, which is pretty much self explanatory. Then, we head to the gym.

Bayla pretty much razor leafs her way to the Pokemon Silver Rival. Why he decided to ditch his team for basic rock Pokemon I'll never know. His Cranidos is the only thing we don't 1-Hit KO, but it's still not much of a challenge. Maybe that girl with the Psyduck did win the gym badge after all...

The town is a dead end for anyone who isn't rich enough to afford a bike, so we head back the way we came to smash the rocks above Jubilife.

Bowl Cuts, Bowl Cuts Everywhere.

So we got all ready to bust up some rocks, only to discover a bizarre group of humans blocking our way. One of them I don't mind so much - Rowan is kind of a badass for his age. However, the kid with him seems a bit too much of a fanboy, and appears to know me for some reason. The rest of the group consists of a bunch of weirdos with bowl cuts in strange costumes. Apparently they are criminal masterminds and want to battle, so I take on two at once all by myself with no help whatsoever, and after losing they run for the hills.

I then head north to the cave, using my geodude slave to get rid of the rocks. This cave is almost as short as the last, but there's no losers celebrating their adventures through it this time, so it is currently winning the 'Best Cave' competition. We reach the other side, and the scenery is is rather pretty. After battling against some twins we discover a town covered in flowers.

Floroama Town (did I spell that right it's hard?) is obsessed with berries and flowers. I get some freebies including a watering can I'll never use, and soon find another two Team Bowl-cut Members blocking my way north. They won't fight me, so instead I head east to the Valley Windworks. Some little girl is standing there looking worried, but I have no time for kids so I ignore her.

Yet ANOTHER weirdo is blocking the Windworks factory, but this one actually wants to battle. Hot Wheelz beats his pokemon with ease and learns ember in the process! But we still can't get inside, so we backtrack yet again to the route his buddies were guarding, to get the other key from them. And turns out now they are prepared for a fight! But the two soon discover that being ready to battle, and being ready to battle against my team are very different things. We get the key and some honey from a spectator, and return to the factory.

After entering the Valley Windworks we are greeted by yet more members of team Bowl-Cut. Hot Wheelz embers her way through them like it's nothing, and then we see the rival from Pokemon Silver has abandoned his rock-type gym and became their commander. Oh also he's a woman now.

Silver Rival's zubat is as easy as the others, but then he/she throws out the ugliest cat-things I've ever seen in my life. Despite being 20 stone it somehow avoids 2 of our attacks and actually beats Hot Wheelz. I send out Bayla and she uses razor leaf. Ugly cat uses faint attack almost KO-ing her. We finally get some luck of our own when Bayla lands a critical hit and wins the battle - that's karma for you.

Silver Rival talks about some master plan that I'll never understand. I ask how he/she got to Floraomoroama town so fast but he/she can't give a straight answer. After he/she leaves, The little girl from outside comes running in and embraces an old guy, who the bowl-cuts were apparently holding hostage. Honestly, I didn't even notice him until now.

I leave the Windworks and venture into the grass patch nearby. It's full of these weird grinning pink slug things. So instead of catching one and having it stare at me while I sleep, I instead decide to do some training because it's about time. Then, this awesome little water weasel appears, and after seeing he already knows watergun I want him on my team. GO HOUSE!

We capture the Buizel, and I name him Kyo after an old manga character I liked. He somewhat resembles him. Now that the bowl-cuts have moved on, we can head north to Eterna forest.

I just realised that Daryl wasn't a part of this chapter. It's probably a bit optimistic to hope that he won't be showing his stupid face any time soon, though.
