The acquisition is expected to be announced as early as Monday.

The deal was a "foregone conclusion" and was unanimously voted for by the board, tech blog AllThingsD reported, citing sources close to the matter.

If confirmed, it will be CEO Marissa Mayer's largest deal since taking the helm of Yahoo in July 2012.

Neither Yahoo nor Tumblr responded immediately to requests for comment.

Marissa Mayer is truly trying to prove herself now!! She's playing hardball now!! Discuss or something!!!

I just got the news on my tumblr dashboard. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know the first thing about how Yahoo! handles things. I just hope that nothing major will change to tumblr as it is currently.

As an extra, here's what the staff blog post says:

News!

Everyone, I'm elated to tell you that Tumblr will be joining Yahoo.

Before touching on how awesome this is, let me try to allay any concerns: We're not turning purple. Our headquarters isn't moving. Our team isn't changing. Our roadmap isn't changing. And our mission – to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve – certainly isn't changing.

So what's new? Simply, Tumblr gets better faster. The work ahead of us remains the same – and we still have a long way to go! – but with more resources to draw from.

Yahoo is the original Internet company, and Marissa and her team share our dream to make the Internet the ultimate creative canvas. I couldn't be more excited to have her help. We also share a vision for Tumblr's business that doesn't compromise the community and product we love. Plus both our logos end with punctuation!

As always, everything that Tumblr is, we owe to this unbelievable community. We won't let you down.

**** yeah,
David

This. It may not be immediate or quick; but then again being Acquired by Yahoo is a slow acting poison on most internet sites. So you'd better enjoy tumblr while you can; pretty soon it's going to be dumbed down so that they can let a swarm of angry soccer moms and other dregs of the last generation or two onto it. Expect the trolls of Answers to hop right on like a swarm of hungry fleas and brace for impact. It's going to be a bumpy ride; especially if Yahoo tries any sort of user account system merging/convergence with Tumblr and you're not going to like the outcome, even if you have two separate accounts.

But seriously. I'm not worried, I've never cared for Tumblr all that much as a platform; it's like livejournal all over again. And well, we all know how that goes, it was cool one dayyear and not the next. The next big thing will hopefully be more interesting.

Good. Hopefully Yahoo can finally explain to me what the hell the purpose of the site is for. I still can't figure it out.

I think the difference in this case is that unlike Flickr, you can do a whole lot more on/with Tumblr. It isn't just a photoblogging site, you can interact with the members in different ways to that travesty known as Flickr. Also, I think Marissa Mayer knows about the skepticism surrounding this recent acquisition and is likely to strive harder than any person in her position has done before. I'm a bit worried about the 'family friendly' policies that Yahoo has adopted, however. If they try to implement family friendly policies on Tumblr then the site will be destroyed in about a week.

Can anyone explain to me what happened when Yahoo bought other sites before?
From what I know, anything they acquire is basically either on the verge of "uncool" and thus fails because…nobody uses it, or they acquire it and ignore it.

Compare this to other companies, which try to predict which services will be useful and cool for a long time, and then buy those. Yahoo generally just tries to capitalize on fads. And usually fails.

Tumblr is like an all purpose blogging site and social network. You can blog practically anything you want, you can customize your page like its your own site sort of, and communicate with people.

I really can't wrap my head around Yahoo! buying tumblr. I don't know if there was any news leading up to the buy out, but it just seems like a spur of the moment type thing. I don't know. This could turn out to be the best thing that has ever happened to tumblr or the worst thing possible. I just hope Yahoo! keeps to their promise and doesn't drastically try to change anything. Similar to Instagram after Facebook bought it, I hope they keep it running independently.

About Flickr, was that ever really popular though?

This is all very sudden, yeah. The world got maybe two days notice? Three? There's been many boardroom meetings about this that no one has heard of, lol.

As far as I know, Yahoo is going to let Tumblr run independently and whatever, though I'm not sure what their definition of independent is. It certainly seems like Marissa Mayer & co are going to let David Karp and his inefficient team do their thing, remaining only the 'landlords', but for all I know Yahoo! could change whatever they want. I just hope they do what is urgently needed - fixing the goddamn video player. That's the one thing I would not mind Yahoo changing at all.

I don't think Yahoo buying Tumblr would ruin the site for me, I use Tumblr regularly and I think it's still one of the best blogging services out there due to the variety of stuff that can be posted.

As far as the independence thing goes, based on what David said, Tumblr is going to keep on minding its own bussiness. I quote (again):

Before touching on how awesome this is, let me try to allay any concerns: We're not turning purple. Our headquarters isn't moving. Our team isn't changing. Our roadmap isn't changing. And our mission – to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve – certainly isn't changing.

According to him, Tumblr is just using Yahoo as an extra means of getting more money. Then again, I honestly hope that he stays true to his words and that Tumblr remains the way it is. Including freedom of blogging whatever the hell you want.

Well as long as Yahoo doesn't screw Tumblr completely up and still lets them run it independently, I'm fine with that. I'm gonna wait to see what they do before making judgement. I like how Tumblr allows for users to post more freely than other sites. Though all the porn on there can be slightly disturbing when you're not even looking for it. Though Yahoo's known for their restrictions so I hope they don't censor it completely. Tumblr's a great way to communicate freely and express one's self and I don't' want to see Yahoo's reputation to ruin that.

Out of all my email accounts, (I have like 21 of them) yahoo is the most hacked into that I've seen reported.

And Triforce89.. I think yahoo can make anything worse. Maybe I'm exaggerating but.. I don't see what good they can do with it.

Much of the worst sort of ill-informed group-think I've seen has come from Tumblr. I have no idea whether Yahoo! will be good or bad for it, but I do hope it will change it in some way. In my opinion, the only direction it can go from here is up.
