The only thing I want fixed lag wise is that I want my game to play at 60 FPS. But when I set it with the fix that was on the Forum a while ago, it just sped the whole game up. What I want is for the game to smooth out, not speed up. Is there a way this is possible? I have an older version of essentials that's heavily modded.

Essentials does everything per frame (every 1/40 second by default). An animation that lasts 30 frames will always last 30 frames. Increasing the FPS to 60 will just speed up the game by 50%. You'd need to go through many scripts and edit them to slow them down.

It's possible, but very much impractical.

I figured as much, ah well. It's not that big of a deal, its just 40 fps is a very weird framerate of choice for gameplay.

I'll do all I can to help the wiki get better. It's been a big help to me so it's only fair that I return the favour.

A good place to start would be to go through the notes that come with the kit, and add in any bits and pieces in the notes that aren't already on the wiki. You can also comment on discussion pages if you think a section needs rewriting to make it clearer (or do it yourself!). The first aim of the wiki is to surpass those notes, and then to be a comprehensive manual.

There's no need to think of something to add off the top of your head :P

The wiki already has a logo (attached), although only for the "classic" MonoBook wiki skin. However, if you want you can design another logo.

The logo should be a specific size:

Dimensions for MonoBook skin: 216x156
Dimensions for new skin: 250x65

If it's made a Wiki Essentials Version, put a SEPARATE file with some graphical and maybe audio resources like PHGC
The problem with the lag thing in particular is that I don't get it (my computer's too good), so I can't test fixes. People don't really provide good information about the kind of lag they get, and they certainly never contribute example maps/games for others to look at (which would be most useful). I can only vaguely guess at the cause(s) of the lag, which isn't good enough.

Many other bugs have been fixed, and their solutions are available on the wiki. If you have a bug that hasn't been fixed, let us know!

The first stage of taking over Essentials would be bug fixing. This would involve getting as many people as possible to find errors and complain about them, which people seem to like doing. It would also get them into the swing of contributing, which helps.
Really? Sichlor put a video (http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=2wq5yl2&s=7) and I provide much information at this bug talk page, all maps have its in latter versions, but I and some of my beta-testers thinks that the lag (better to call "pauses") decrease after some gameplay.

Guys, how do i rip tiles from Pokemon Black in Desmume? :S

Not even near close to the correct place for this, try asking here tho http://Spriters-Resource.com go to their forums and ask, or just use whatever their members have already ripped..

But to answer your question i think it has something to do with the screen capture feature and you have to re paint and edit them by hand once captured.. but i could be way off I honestly dont know.

Not bad. I actually prefer the first one, actually, because it's more related to mapping than just "it's Pokémon!". It's also quite iconic (Prof's lab machine at the end there), and it's obviously a custom map.

I think the logo should reflect that it's a wiki for a game-building kit that just happens to be Pokémon-related. What might be a nice idea is to take something like the first image, and turning the left side into a wireframe version of the map, blending into the full coloured version on the right (to signify creating a map). Obviously Essentials doesn't use wireframes, but it's the symbolism that counts.

Personally, I'd prefer the logo to not showcase any particular Pokémon, but we'll take what we get.

The big and small logos should match, really, so we'd need two versions of whatever you come up with.

All I can tell from the video is that there's some lag roughly every second (and how much of that is due to the video recording software I don't know - is it true to what's actually experienced?), and your comments just say that it's worse for larger maps (which is obvious).

Key notes: Disable day/night, use smaller maps, use fewer events. All pretty basic stuff, although the first option is undesirable (people will want to have day/night) and the other two depend on the user not being silly with their mapping.

A point I want to make is that no one's ever actually said whether disabling the day/night system removes the lagging every second. I'm just assuming it's the day/night system at fault here, but if disabling it does nothing, obviously the problem is elsewhere. I'm also assuming everyone's getting the same type of lag, which could again be wrong.

More information to be provided includes the time you're experiencing the lag, whether it's more or less severe at certain times of the day, what kinds of map connections are there, numbers of events, whether it's more or less severe on certain maps/at certain parts on a map, and so forth. Again, preferably I can at least be sent copies of the maps/games in question, so I can have a look at what's going on and see if it isn't just something silly.

Yes that is a custom map, an old one i made awhile back. I had use the lab image because of the idea of the wiki it like a guide or instructions to put together a puzzle.. I actually like the wireframe idea, but i got another idea i wanna try too i'll make more tomorrow after i get home.

I thinks that is better for future references to move this discussion to wiki page.

Maybe something like this?

Also, I've added a page about Dungeons.

That looks good. I like the transition between the tile grid and the finished map. Unfortunately it's too big. I've attached a template with the sizes for the two logos (one for each wiki skin).

Also, thanks for contributing to the wiki.

Is there any chance that the masterminds behind the Wiki can create a modified version of Pokemon Essentials that simply has all the bugfixes they've created applied to it?

I am very pleased to announce that:

Pokémon Essentials now belongs to the Wiki!

After speaking with Peter (poccil), he admitted that he had lost interest in maintaining Essentials, and therefore he would donate the project to the Pokémon Essentials Wiki.

This is great news, as it means there will now be more updates and bug fixes again. What's even better is that it'll now be a community project, meaning everyone can contribute to it. This will help development speed along, and we'll have a superb starter kit before you know it!

Naturally, there is a lot of organisation to be done first. The wiki needs to be updated, a small team of project leaders needs to be appointed, and guidelines and project aims need to be laid out.

I have already redesigned the wiki's main page, and set up a page called Suggested features where you can add the features and fixes you want to see.

Recruiting

What we need now is a small team of people who will head the development of Essentials. They will make the big decisions on what directions the kit will go in, and be in charge of sorting out all aspects of development.

Roles will include:

  • Scripters - An obvious role, and the most important one. We need experienced scripters who can find and fix bugs, and implement new features. They may also rewrite large chunks of code to make things work better.
  • Web monkey - Making sure the wiki looks good and is kept up to date. They will also help come up with the best design for the wiki, and should have a good sense of how to lay everything out. Experience with editing wikis is important.
  • Resource gatherer - Collecting, organising and filing all the resources we need. This includes tilesets, sprites, music and other sound effects, fonts, updated PBS files, scripts and so forth. They should gather not just what is needed, but also what they think ought to be included.
  • Stress testers - Playtesters, bug hunters, whatever you want to call them. These people try to do everything it's physically possible to do with the kit, and report when/why they can't. A good imagination will help you to think up scenarios in which the code might break.
  • Game designers - People who understand the mechanics behind good games, and who can come up with the best ways of getting Essentials to work. This doesn't necessarily involve scripting, although it can help. Thinking outside the box and coming up with radical new ways of doing things is a big plus.
  • Coordinators - Making sure everyone is working together, not separately. They will be responsible for the progress of development, allocation of tasks, updating the Change List and credits, taking suggestions/contributions and turning them into useful goals, developing and upholding the project aims, etc.
I should say now that these are not separate roles. Ideally the team of project leaders will consist of people who can do several of the above tasks (although specialising in one or two).

A project leader should be reasonable, dedicated and always have the best interests of the kit in mind. They should be able to defend tough decisions, and work well with the other leaders. They will have the same basic ideals as the other team leaders, in terms of how to work and how the kit will develop.

If you want to apply to be a project leader, please send me a PM outlining what you would bring to the team (including examples). You should also choose at least two of the below features, and for each of them come up with a good and balanced argument, and your personal conclusion, about whether they should be included in Essentials (and if so, to what extent).

  • Contests
  • Following Pokémon
  • Dual screen and/or touch screen
  • Updating to be a 4th/5th Gen kit
  • One other important feature of your choosing
Of course, project leaders aren't the only people who can contribute to Essentials. Anyone can!

Initial aims

The first update or two of Essentials will be primarily about bug fixes and general tidying up of the kit. We will move on to adding new features/expanding existing ones later.

This means we need your help! If you've found a bug or a feature that doesn't work properly, let us know! Either post it in this thread or add it to the list on the Suggested features page of the wiki. Nothing is too small to be mentioned.

I look forward to revitalising the Essentials kit with everyone's help. This is a terrific opportunity, and I hope you take full advantage of it.

2zjermg.jpg

Finally found a suitable image for my mood.. Thank you Cilan!

This... Is the best news I have heard in a long, long time! Hopefully the best starter kit out there will finally receive some well needed updates!

I'm really hoping to see this pick up!

I want to contribute something to the wiki, but I'm not sure what I should, or can offer.

Edit: Actually, there is one thing... Currently, the running shoes is determined be the Metadata setting "Outdoor". There is a tutorial on the wiki about how to remove that check to allow running on all maps, but I have something I've seen no where else: A custom created Metadata setting that if NOT true, allows the player to run(That makes sense, because there are more places where the player is allowed to run). Should I go ahead and make a tutorial on how to do this on the Wiki? Where do you want me to add it?

I didn't directly answer your question before, but my last post should make the answer obvious. The first thing we're going to do is a big-fixed version of Essentials. Of course, it'll only be a decent release if everyone reports every bug they find, and ideally does some stress-testing to force a few more out.

Then we'll start adding in the new stuff...

Glad to hear you're as excited about this as I am!

Feel free to make whatever tutorials you like. I would suggest a title like "Forbid running in certain places". Just make a new page of the wiki, with "Tutorial:" at the start of the page name, and that'll be fine.

After thinking about it, I can actually see cases where this would be useful. Walking along the edge of steep cliffs, for example (who here would go for a jog across the edge of the White Cliffs of Dover?), or perhaps in dark caves (as another incentive to use Flash). It'd be a reality factor, I think. You could also make it apply to cycling too, in which case call your tutorial "Force walking in certain places" instead (or something like that). Have a look at how other tutorials are made, and mimic them.

Other things you could do for the wiki are to go through the notes that come with the kit, and copy across any information in them that isn't yet on the wiki. You could also add "To do" comments in articles' talk pages to mention other information that should be included, or point out if parts should be rewritten. You can point out bugs, and make suggestions for what you want to see in Essentials.

There's plenty that can be done. Even though we now have Essentials to work on, making sure the wiki is up to snuff is just as important. Every little helps!
