break it! haha, i used to chain shinies too.

RNG is the way to go, but yes, it does take the "special" factor to the pokemon, random shinies are more special because, well, they are random. like my blue Relicanth *i was like "ooooooooh" when i caught it when i was fishingin platinum.

Serious post: I would prefer to find a shiny much like the way I found my first shiny -- a Voltorb in FireRed in a bush while playing normally (which I caught with an Ultra Ball, by the way, because I didn't want him to explode in my face. He is the only of the main Pokes I use not in a standard Poke Ball.)

Serious question: Why do some people here want "flawless" shinies? For me the fun is the fact that it's SUPPOSED to be "random" when you find Pokes in the wild, and you BREED Pokes to have more control over the output. So why do it? Path of least resistance is not an acceptable answer. I am asking why do you want to insta-generate a perfect Poke rather than work for it?

I used to shiny hunt. But it kinda got boring for me. Soft resetting is really boring, but i can handle Masuda Method okay. I just don't really have much motivation to do it. I can get just about any shiny from the trade shops.

Shiny hunting! It can be pretty boring but if you turn on some music and grab your phone to chat with friends it isn't boring at all. Plus it's really rewarding.
But that said - I don't continually hunt. I only do it when I have the time and when I'm in the mood for it. Last time was two weeks ago, and got a Suicune in just 3 days and some 1300 SRs :D

RNG all the way! lol I have never, ever, ever found a shiny on my own and I've been playing for years. Yes I've hunted months for them too I just have the worst luck ever. Finally got my first shiny with RNG breeding (an Eevee ofc) and even though it's IVs aren't perfect I still love it. Some RNGs have taken me a few days to do and made me want to smash my DS a few times, but seeing that sparkle when the battle first starts always makes it worth all the effort. :)

I prefer RNG over shiny hunting since it's a lot faster. However I will go shiny hunting if I"m feeling especially bored and I have a lot of time on my hands. I've only gotten two out of hunting though >.

By far I think every one will agree on this on one, no one has the patience for chaining it will always be RNG, that's how I do it.

I'm sorry, but this is a completely false statement. There's an entire club on Pokecommunity that prefers shiny hunting, of all forms, including chain, Masuda, soft resetting on stationary Pokemon, and even streaight up wild encounters! They even made a challenge for it over in the Challenges Forum recently. Plenty of people have the patience.

I have to agree with Necrum on this one. There are plenty of people who shiny hunt here on PC and I myself am a member of the club. Even though I can just RNG one, I hunt every now and then. It's a lot more satisfying when you obtain it without RNG.

I don't think RNG would feel as rewarding as just finding shinies normally.
I found my first shiny last week, that I didn't get from a trade or was Supposed to be there (like the lake of rage thing) and it was the greatest feeling.
If you know that your gonna get it, that isn't very fun.....

Okay, I've never really did any RNG abuse so I ran through and read all of these posts and such. I have to say, RNG is the exact thing that I despise, not as bad as other things, like PokeGen but, still awful nonetheless. I absolutley HATE people using outside (not already in place in the game) mechanics to obtain their "perfect" Pokemon. Sure, RNG isn't making their stats higher and all that, but, if it wasn't in the game, don't use it. It isn't honest, it isn't right. Shiny hunting is tedious, boring, and difficult, but, at least when I have a shiny I can say I sat there and searched for days for it not, "I manipulated the game because I'm impatient". I know I'm not the only person out there annoyed by it. Okay, RNG takes some skill, it takes a little time in itself, it takes some more intelligence. I don't care, it isn't already in place in the game, you cannot walk up to some building and ask some scientist to help you RNG, than it wasn't something meant to be done. Hardly anyone plays these games fair anymore, that's why I'm hardly competitive. I'm proud to say I've leveled up my entire team to 100 legit and even one more of my Pokemon and I don't plan to stop. I just think everyone should play the games the way they were intended to be because otherwise, competitive battling is no fun. If you're just collecting, fine, I don't care, still not right, but, I don't care. I never really cared for shiny Pokemon (unless someone has a shiny Zorua/Zoroark they're willing to part with *hintity hint hint*), but, if you're going to use them and get them do it honorably.

Bunch of Bull. RNG is built in the game. All encounters are selected by (Pseudo) Random Number Generator (RNG). Some clever people were able to decypher it from the game code and made an application that helps you with triggering encounters hidden in your games, that's all, so please, don't tell RNG is something external, because you're just showing off your ingnorance.

@The rest of the post: Soft Resseting or just hunting for shiny is exactly the same thing as RNG, really. When you RNG, instead of acting like a blind kid in the fog (Toph not included) and spending days/weeks/months you just have someone (in the case, an app) to guide your way, so it's just faster.

I'm trying to relate to the topic itself and I actually like my random shinies more than the RNGd ones, but I'm a competitive battler so I actually care more about perfect stats than shininess.

RNG exists everywhere in technology where something is randomly generated. That Solitaire game on your laptop? Controlled by RNG. Some of the machines in the casinos? RNG. Blood Bane of Stone monster in Diablo 2? RNG. The spells and attacks monsters decide to hit you with? Same RNG. That blah blah blah on -goes on a tangent-

IV breeding is also abusing the RNG though by a smaller amount. We figured out that we can pass down 2 IVs (randomly) from each parent, and that breeding parents with perfect IVs together generate the best babies. IV breeders are also abusing the system by your way of thinking.

Exactly, had to build an application in order to do anything with decyphering that was done. If RNG abuse was meant to be use, the application would have been in the game. Again, RNG doesn't bug me as much as things like PokeGen, where you can "build the perfect Pokemon" from scratch. I apologize for the exaggerated emotions but, things like this really get to me and it's something I feel really strongly about.

I never RNGed so I guess I'm stuck with finding shiny from the wild. Never had a shiny before in my life, to be honest.

The only shinies I get nowadays are random ones that pop up during monotype runs. But since they're monotypes, I usually don't carry around pokeballs so when they pop up, derrrrrrp.

Well, since I've never encountered a random shiny in my life, I prefer RNG over shiny hunting. I've bred using masuda method, soft reset for shiny legends and entered wild pokemon battles and nothing. :<

So all my shinies are RNGed.

If I need a shiny quickly for a trade or something else like that, I prefer RNG. However, I spent so much time chaining prior to learning RNG abuse that it became a bit of a hobby for me.
                So, if I just want a shiny Pokemon for the sake of catching/hatching it, I do prefer to shiny hunt. It's much more satisfying to finally encounter what you were searching for, after ___ soft resets, rather than knowing that the egg you hatch will be shiny (assuming you made no mistakes). Sure, it probably won't have an ideal nature and might have horrible IVs, but your work finally paid off! And, if you're really lucky, maybe it'll be good enough to use. If not, you still have that trophy 'mon to show off to others. [;
All of that being said, I have good luck with non-RNG'd shinies, so it isn't as tedious for me as it is for some others. I've been playing for less than three years and already have captured around 10 shiny Pokemon (some of which were chained).

From what I used to do, 4th Gen RNG was kinda fun.
Of course, I could only RNG for shinyness, nature, and abilities, and I'd just use a good IV ditto for the breeding most of the time

Shiny hunting seems a bit tedious, imo

RNG is a surefire way of getting a shiny and the stats and nature you desire if you do it correctly, as opposed to shiny hunting which could technically take forever. But latter feels more rewarding if it actually comes off.

All in all, I'll pick RNG since the outcome is faster and more desirable.

Shiney hunting of course. I couldn't look at my own face in the mirror if i were ever to use RNG. Im against hacking in general and the fact that some people are risking ruining their game for a pokemon with different colors and better stats actually sickens me. Be moral people.

What are you talking about? RNG is not hacking, there is no risk of ruining the game. We are playing the game just the same. It's not like we're crossing wires to get results, we're leveraging the built in function to act how we want it to. It's non invasive and no cartridges or Pokemon are harmed in the process.

Honestly, I didn't even know what RNG was until this post and I went to go look it up, I'm not even sure how someone managed to figure that out /and/ make it easy enough for normal people to understand. Personally, I think it's more rewarding to find a random shiny by luck than algorithm but I don't do anything competitively so stats don't matter to me; so I can definatley understand why people would do the RNG method. All of my shinies have been random encounters and I've never had any successful hunts, recently i've started breeding for shinies but no luck there either.

I prefer getting the shinies the way they're intended to be obtained - by getting lucky through encounters, breeding, or chaining.

In my honest opinion, using RNG to abuse the games' system is akin to using the old action replays/game sharks - I fail to see the point, you may as well just hack or use online GTS created pokés. Especially when finding "flawless" monsters. Getting a program to do the work would take all the fun out of the game for me. There's no fun in being handed top notch team members.

I gave up on SRing for a shiny Kyogre in Sapphire lol. And I think it's ridiculous to run around in the grass all day waiting on a shiny. It seems tedious and boring, but that could also be said about RNG by someone that doesn't know how.
You actually had that one? Im no longer alone then. Also, I found a shiny whismur on it by chance and killed it by accident.
