Leaks "confirm" Microsoft will charge Windows 7 users monthly for security

... starting January 14th, 2020, as per this Forbes article:

Microsoft MSFT -0.45% has always described Windows 10 "as a service" and leaks have already revealed new monthly charges are coming. Of course, for Windows 7 owners this was never something they expected to pay. But times change…

In a new blog post entitled "Helping customers shift to a modern desktop", Microsoft has announced that it will indeed start charging Windows 7 customers a monthly fee from January 14th 2020, if they want to keep their computers safe.

If this date rings a bell, that's because it is the day Microsoft will end 'Extended Support' for Windows 7 according to the company's Lifecycle page. This means no more patches or security updates unless, as we now learn, you pay. Furthermore, Microsoft says it will increase the cost of this every year.

this is some interesting stuff just to get users to switch to Windows 8/8.1 and/or 10, but I guess this is how Microsoft wants to do things.

link to the blog post by the way

January 14, 2020 is EOL for extended support on Windows 7, anyways.

Honestly, this is probably the better way to go to encourage people to upgrade their OS to something newer and to stay more secure. Either pay to keep your ass protected from threats or upgrade for like maybe less than $100 and stay secure at no cost as an incentive for keeping up-to-date.

There's also the concern here:

Worse still, as it stands, Microsoft is currently only making this offer to Windows 7 Professional customers in Volume Licensing. Some small businesses may qualify, but the vast majority of everyday consumers (most of whom are running Windows 7 Home) will not.

So basically, while Microsoft's stance may chance on charging home users on security, there's also the equal possibility that they may leave Windows 7 Home users in the dust.

I think they'll leave Windows 7 Home users in the dust in order to force them to "upgrade" to Windows 10 which is the spyware OS.

This is quite logical imo since January 2020 will be the End of Life date for Windows 7. Supporting only Windows 7 Pro is also logical in a business standpoint.
Would be great though if they continue to enhance Windows 8.1/10 for future users from Windows 7.
