Hard to call them travel companions when they?re not together 24/7 like in the previous series. Furthermore, if SM cast are travel companions, their development has been some of the worst to date, especially with regards to Pokemon Team development(Female ones especially).

I figured the SM friends would be called companions, despite Bulbapedia referring to them as "classmates". They only seem to be called classmates because of the school setting in SM.

And I do agree with Code, the SM companions are probably the most underdeveloped ones to date, to the point it makes even Cilan look better. Especially with all three SM girls still only having one officially-owned non-PokeRide Pokemon.

Traveling companion means all Ash's friends that have traveled with him throughout an entire region. They're not companions otherwise the term ''traveling companion'' is not the correct we're using here. Yes, they are protagonists, they have the same relevance to their series like Ash's past companions or whatever you want call it but they're definitely not traveling companions.
