How to Apply a Patch to a ROM
(How to Play a Hack)
(How to Play a Hack)
In general, you will need the following:
- A patch of the hack you want to play (typically found in the hack's thread, in .ips or .ups format)
- The ROM the hack you want to play is based on (.gbc/.gba files - don't ask where to get these)
- An emulator, to play the hack (configured so that its save type is Flash 128 KB)
- A patching tool, to apply the patch to the ROM
The types of emulators and patching tools you will need depends on the platform you are using. Therefore, instructions for each platform will be provided in the spoilers below:
Windows Computers
Spoiler:
- Emulators: mGBA, VBA-m or no$gba
- Patching Tools: Lunar IPS for patch files with the .ips extension, NUPS for patch files with the .ups extension, Beat for patch files with the .bps extension.
After that, simply open the patched ROM in your emulator and play!
Apple Computers
Spoiler:
- Emulators: mGBA or OpenEmu
- Patching Tools: Multipatch can be used for any patch files
After that, all that's left to do is open the patched ROM in your emulator and play!
Android Mobile Devices
Spoiler:
- Emulators: MyBoy!
- Patching Tools: Unipatcher
Apple Mobile Devices
Spoiler:
- Emulators: GBA4iOS
- Patching Tools: None (yet)
After you have done that, all that's left to do is open the patched ROM in your emulator and play!
If you are still having problems, please feel free to head over to the Patching & Emulation Help Thread, where someone is likely to be able to point you in the right direction.
