Pokémon BEYOND
Kanto based. Rating is T. spots are CLOSED for now!

[S-HIGHLIGHT]IC thread found here <<[/S-HIGHLIGHT]

Year 2021, April:
Kanto has never been the most popular region for its nature, its culture or even its native species of pokémon. What makes the region great, is its people. So many famous trainers, actors, businesspeople, researchers and explorers have their origins in Kanto, and they outshine the natives of other regions in many situations with their pride for their region and brilliant energy and minds. At least... that's what they're saying in Kanto.

One career in which Kantonians have historically been particularly dominant, is pokémon battling. Anybody owning a pokémon is legally a trainer and obliged to follow trainer laws. But taking it one step further and battling other trainers for money - that makes you a battler. As with any type of sports, there are hobbyists, and there are those who strive to actually pursue a professional career. Most battlers undertake journeys through a region both at the start of their career as a test, as well as later on to stay sharp and well versed in skills and environments - as well as to build a web of useful contacts from around the world if they can! Every year, the Pokémon League also resets. This means that any battler can challenge the gyms around the region. If they manage to collect at least 8 gym badges, they have earned the right to challenge the Elite 4 for the title of Kanto Champion.

You aspire to be a battler, but you don't own any pokémon yet. As the Kanto community prides itself on its outstanding reputation for producing great battlers, the government has set up an office where trainers can receive a starter pokémon for free and a complimentary pokédex - which becomes registered as an ID in their name - to kickstart their career. This endeavor started a few decades ago and has proven to be successful. The pokémon species given out have largely remained the same, with a few seasonal and promotional changes now and then, and the core trio which were originally very rare pokémon, are now widely known as "the Kanto starters". A professor Green Oak is officially responsible for handing the starter and pokédex out to new battlers, and the facility can be found in Pallet City, a modern and still growing settlement in the southwestern part of the region.

175px-ORAS_Ace_Trainer_F.png
... However, you (currently) live in Fuchsia City. You might have wanted to sign up in Pallet City, but for one reason or another, you became aware of a new endeavor going on in your own town. Another pokémon researcher, professor Cypress, is starting up her own battling agency called Battle Beyond, through which she hopes to rival the official monopoly on teaching new battlers how to think and train. This flamboyant figure offers a different selection of starters, bred in the local Safari Zone by her team of researchers. They are at least as strong as the classic "Kanto starters", and according to Cypress, they are even more intelligent.

The catch? Cypress believes strongly in aura. As the existence and influence of aura in battles and pokémon growth is hard to prove, Cypress so far isn't taken seriously by other scientists. She will require you to agree to try your best to get in tune with your own and your pokemon's aura over the course of your journey, and report any unusual behavior or findings back to her. That doesn't sound too hard, does it?

And Team Rocket isn't really big and dangerous, and you won't need to worry about them... Unless you're training strong pokémon. Then you should probably be very worried. What are they really up to, though?

Setting
There are a few things you should know about the Kanto we're playing this out in. First of all, the year is 2021!

- The story of RBY/FRLG never happened. There were two trainers called Green and Red starting their journeys at the same time though, receiving one pokémon each from Green's grandpa back in 1996 along with the first portable pokédexes. Green took his grandpa's place eventually, while Red became the Pokémon League Tournament champion before vanishing mysteriously.

- Team Rocket didn't rise back then. They were always low key and not really known to the public.

- As this is 2021, you might not recognize all gym leaders or places in Kanto. Things change!

- Humans hurting humans physically is a widespread taboo, even among those you'd call criminals. For hundreds of years, the much more durable pokémon have done all the fighting for humans, as it has benefitted them both - humans don't get hurt, and the pokémon grow their bodies and aura stronger and thus often evolve.
--- This is why it's not considered such a strange thing to send a teenager alone on a journey around the region, as long as they can take care of themselves and have sufficiently strong pokémon with them. Strong people can be bad trainers, and great trainers are seldom bad people.

- Oh yeah, Aura is canon here. Think of it as The Force but in pokémon instead of Star Wars. Feel free to have your characters develop it as a means to become psychic (psychic humans have been canon in the game/anime verse ever since gen 1) or communicate with their pokémon or channel pokémon abilities or moves or anything like that, eventually. Creative freedom! Help Cypress' research out (: You may of course opt out and be a normal person, if you prefer.

Mechanics
Let's simplify this a lot.

Every IC day, you can make 1 advancing action. Either:
- Teach a new move to one of your current pokémon
- Evolve one of your current pokémon
- Capture a new pokémon

Everything else, you can do as much as you want, with whomever you want. Go! :)

Rules
- If you trade with an "NPC", you can only receive pokémon that were previously or currently available for you to capture, and the GM will decide its moveset.

- It's probably a good thing to keep track of your pokémon and their moves in every IC post!

- Rating is T. That being said, feel free to make your character and the world around them seem realistic rather than overly kid friendly.

- Be friendly at all times ooc!

Name: Clyde Menter
Gender: Male
Age: 15
Birth town: Fuchsia
Appearance:
Spoiler:

History: (what's worth mentioning in order for us to understand the character? Family? Events?)

Personality: Clyde is a nice person who can put on a game face. He's typically very friendly and is willing to be sociable in a comfortable environment. If he's in an unfamiliar place or situation with very few people he knows, it wouldn't be a surprise that he comes off as shy. (that's most everyone) He presents an air of confidence that is there to suppress his self-doubt. It's really just a facade, but Clyde tries to recognize his weaknesses and hide them, while trying to improve them of course.

Clyde is very athletic and enjoys working out. He has average brains, but his quick reflexes and reactions tend to aid him in battle. He isn't a very big fan of flying type Pokemon and just flying in general. He is not a hugger and would rather step on a lego than hug somebody.

Ah, a fun little slice of life in a nostalgic region. Have an SU!

Name: Elise Greene

Gender: Female

Age: 17

Birth town: Saffron City

Appearance:
Spoiler:

At 6' tall, Elise is tall for her age and very slender, with soft curves and creamy skin. Her hair is long and brown, and usually pulled into a ponytail to keep it out of the way. She likes cool colors, usually green or white, wearing a simple blouse and slacks. She's quite fond of accessories, especially flowers, and often wears floral patterns or fake flowers.

History: Despite living in one of the largest cities in Kanto, Elise was a bit of a loner as a child. Her father worked at Silph and her mother at Game Freak, usually leaving her in the care of her older brother. As he was training for his Pokémon Battling career, he'd let Elise tag along as long as she kept quiet. It worked out well enough for a while, until one day when she stumbled across an angry Fearow. Her brother came to rescue her, but the incident left her traumatized. From then on, she just stayed at the library whenever her brother took care of her.

When she was old enough, she attended the Pokémon Trainer's Academy, doing very well on all her written exams, but she couldn't bring herself to actually battle with Pokémon. Elise could have become a certified Trainer then and there, but turned down the offer, and considered becoming a Researcher or Doctor instead. She wasn't afraid of Pokémon (although bird Pokémon made her nervous), she just couldn't bear the thought of battling them.

After her father left Silph Co., he got a job at the Safari Zone in Fuchsia City. Her brother, old enough to be on his own, stayed behind to further his career, but Elise was only 15, so she went with her parents. She missed her brother, who had been her only friend when she was younger, especially after hearing news that he had challenged the Elite 4, although he'd been defeated by the Champion. Convincing herself that she could only move forward in her life by conquering her fears, she decided to become a Trainer and learn to battle, and perhaps one day challenge the Elite 4 herself. Luckily for her, she heard of a local Professor helping rookie trainers get started...

Personality: Elise has always been a little shy, even borderline antisocial as a kid, so is usually awkward and nervous around others. She knows facts and logic better than emotions and feelings, and tends to ramble on when she gets worked up. Oddly, she gets along better with Pokémon than people, and she's always been able to communicate with them. Not actual conversation and words, but she seems to just know what they want and can tell if they're hurt just by looking at them. She's trying to overcome her nerves and fears, with some success, but tends to shut down and feel terrible if she screws up.

Name: Paige Perrary
Age: 16
Gender: female
Birth town: Cinnabar Town

Appearance: Decently tall, slim body shape, long wavy hair which she for the past years always has dyed in some vivid color. Currently it is pink. Her face is often described as narrow and sort of pointy, with curious bluegreen eyes and a spray of freckles that seems to stay in her nose and cheek area. Her well defined arms have some tattoos. Her right shoulder features a stylistic Zekrom head and tail, while her left upper arm has a fluffy Reshiram image wrapped around it.

Since she doesn't enjoy wearing bras (and doesn't think her flat chest needs them anyways), she often wears double tops instead, in layers. The bottom often a spaghetti top and the top one a t-shirt of simple color, either long or short sleeved. She carries her stuff around in a convenient backpack, and has a magnetic belt for holding 6 pokéballs. Make-up isn't something she usually bothers with, but she wears a ragtag number of necklaces and bracelets from various sources; some are gifts, some she made herself, some she bought or found. They all represent a person or a moment in her life.

Paige aspires to meet as many dragon types as possible throughout her journey, as they have always fascinated her as pokémon with strong willpower and independence. These things are important to her, and she wants to fill her arms with tattoos of dragon pokémon to remind herself of what she should value in life. But in order for her to deserve more tattoos, in her own mind, she feels like she needs to meet the pokémon in real life before she puts them onto her skin forever. Reshiram and Zekrom were exceptions.

History: Paige actually grew up in Cinnabar Town with her parents but now more recently she lives in Fuchsia, also with her little sister and brother - they are around a decade younger than she is, since her parents had her when they were still teenagers and only later on felt ready for having more children. Her mother is now a fashion designer in Fuchsia City at a studio and aims to create her own brand soon. Her father is a manager at a clothing store, which he wants to eventually buy and own for himself, or together with his wife so that they can spread the Perrary brand. Paige's biggest treasures are her siblings, and part of why she decided to get Reshiram and Zekrom tattoos even though she hasn't seen them is because her sister loves the strong Zekrom and its lightning bolts, while her brother adores the powerful Reshiram and its firestorms. The pokémon and the tattoos remind her of her siblings, even when she is out on her journey, and reminds her of what is worth fighting for. Since some time after her siblings were born, Paige started having strange recurring dreams, where she was a pokémon rather than a human.

Personality: Keen eye for details. Notices things some others might miss. Appreciates the little things and doesn't feel like she always needs to know reasons or meanings behind things in order to accept or enjoy them. She was always physically fit, from living a healthy enough life and practicing yoga and meditation as a hobby. Paige will always listen to what her pokémon wants and would never force it to battle if she noticed that it didn't really want to. Even if she adores powerful pokémon, she will admire tiny, weak pokémon with big personalities as well.

Paige can sometimes lose track of the bigger picture and get lost in details. When others might question events or things people say, because they seem fishy, Paige might shrug and focus on what's relevant here and now. Not the most well educated person in the world, she doesn't keep up with news and isn't big on science in any form. Sometimes she can misunderstand or not at all understand sciency or technical terms, and not recognize names of celebrities or historical figures in conversation. In her quest for finding pokémon with strong individuality and willpower, she might forget to listen to her human companions or take their wants and needs into account. Most humans are "boring" compared to pokémon, after all.

When not in school or helping her parents out with their work, Paige enjoys hanging out with friends and talk about anything and everything, doing yoga, and playing the guitar. She is convinced that together, there is almost nothing a pokémon and a human cannot do, if they put their willpower into it. It is a daydream of hers to be a pokémon, and then preferably a dragon. Part of her wishes that it was possible somehow.

Almost there!

Name: Martin Lovett
Gender: Male
Age: 15
Birth town: Fuchsia City

Appearance:
Spoiler:

History: Born and raised in Fuchsia City, Martin has always lived a quiet life with his mother Janine, father Dave, and two sisters, Genevieve and Cate. He has always kept to himself and looks to stay out of trouble. Most people think it is just because he's shy and has a difficult time opening up to people but those closest to him know the real reason. When he was only 6 years old, his family took him to the Safari Zone on the outskirts of the city. This was a family tradition every year but the first time for Martin. At first, all was going well as they walked the grounds and watched all the peaceful Pokemon playing, sleeping and eating. The light began to fade though finally, signalling it was time to start heading home but Martin didn't want to leave yet so he took off running into the trees. Quickly it turned dark and only the moon kept the small child from running into things. A the minutes passed, he realized the mistake he made and tried to find his back to the main walkway and his family. During his search he rustling over to his side and froze. He turned his head towards the sound, only to see a large Pokemon looming over him. It had large pinsirs for hands, around its mouth and large stinger on its back end. The Pokemon yelled out and Martin took off running. He ran as fast as he could but was not very fast. He called out for his family as the Pokemon pursued. That was when his sister Genevieve appeared in front of him and released her long-time partner, Electabuzz, scaring off the pursuing Pokemon. Crashing into his sister, he apologized profusely and vowed never to do something so stupid again. Since that day, he has kept that promise until his parents decided it was time for Martin to see the world again and signed him up to be a trainer.

Personality: In terms of positive attributes, it is hard to say what Martin may possess. Since he spends most of his time in his room, away from the world, most characteristics have not had the opportunity grow and become strengths. There is one though that has developed over the years. Martin is very creative. With so much free time on his hands, he has had the time to perfect his art such as drawing, painting and story writing, among other things. Though too shy to share it, he is very proud of his works.

Martin's flaws are a bit more noticeable though. Communication is the most obvious one as he is not very talkative. The extent to which he talks is short quick answers like Yes/no and mumbled words to get through conversations if he gets stuck in one. A fair amount of the people in Fuchsia don't even know what Martin sounds like. His choice to talk as little as possible leaves Martin weak in the communication department.

A second major flaw of Martin's is that he is a bit of a coward, or rather, a big coward. Due to his experience as a child and general timidness, Martin is quick to run away from any situation he finds threatening such as bullies at school, the occasional wild Pokemon that appears and when his relatives visit the house. This cowardice is the main reason that his parents have pushed Martin into being part of the Battle Beyond program, to help get over his fears of life and make some friends in the process.

Hey why not. Never really got into an adventure RP before, and this one seems just laid back enough to be my cup of tea. Here's a WIP that'll probably get done this weekend; have a 10 page paper and huge final to deal with first.

Name: Chris J. Sorenson

Gender: Male

Age: 19

Birth town: Vermillion

Appearance:
Spoiler:

History: Born the son of a wealthy Alola tradesman and a well accomplished musician, Chris was no stranger to the comfortable, pampered life he grew up in. As the firstborn, he was brought up and groomed to one day take his father's place at the head of his Alola based trading company, should he choose to. All through his childhood, Chris had barely a care in the world; he had money, but wasn't overly flaunting about it. As such, he made many friends over the years, in both Kanto where he lived, and Alola when his family visited their vacation home every summer.

It was this constant moving that kept Chris from leaving home as early as some kids might; he got all the travel he needed by moving between regions, and wasn't quite looking to become a Pokemon trainer in the first place. His father's Slowking was the closest he had to a Pokemon companion growing up.

One year, however, at the behest of one of his best Alolan friends, Zach, Chris moved out of the rich life of his parents, though not without being forced to take a decently large check to "get him started," and moved to Fuscia city with him. Zach had been so inspired by Chris's tales of Kanto and its strong trainers that he wanted to move there and become one himself. Chris agreed to this plan, under the condition that Zach then took Chris to Alola after he was done with his journey through the region. Chris still had no intention of becoming a Pokemon trainer, so Zach left his Lurantis to keep Chris company when he wasn't working at the Safari Zone.

It was a few weeks into Zach's journey that Chris caught wind of Professor Cypress and her studies of Aura through a coworker. The idea intrigued him, to the point that he actually researched up this thing she called "Battle Beyond." He was completely honest, it had piqued his interest. He made plans to have someone care for Zach's Lurantis until he could pick her up again, and got a bag ready. He was going to start his first Pokemon journey.

Personality: For the "rich kid," Chris is actually rather humble. He won't openly flaunt his wealth, but he certainly doesn't live frugally. He almost always wears business casual, and is no slack when it comes to looking good. Chris finds it easy to mingle with anyone, regardless of where or what background they might come from, and his time in Alola has only made thegap between regions smaller for him. He loves to learn, and when a subject intrigues Chris, he researches everything about it, making him seem like a bit of a know-it-all. Chris is mostly a laid back person, coming from his father's heritage, but in battle he becomes a cold, hard tactician. He realizes that he's "a bit old" compared to the average age of a first time adventurer, but it doesn't bother him. If anything, his age only makes him a better trainer, as he is able to better form strategies based on patterns he's seen. That being said, he still is a new trainer; he's still bound to make mistakes, or not know something a veteran trainer might see as obvious. When it comes down to the wire, Chris truly hates to lose, and he'll often beat himself up mentally over blatant mistakes he could have avoided in hindsight.

Battle Beyond starter: Since I wanted to do something unique and not just one of my favorites, I hit the random button. Got Solosis, which I'll give a Relaxed nature.

Theme Song: (Just my own personal flair I like to add to characters.) Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover

:3 I kinda like this RP idea. Credit for my trainer image goes to hapuriainen of dA.

Name: Damien Lalune
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Birth town: Lavender Town

Appearance:
Spoiler:

History: Damien was born in Lavender Town, as an only child. His mother and father, Charlotte and Roland Lalune, moved to Lavender Town to help Damien's grandfather when he was ill. Not to mention, Damien's grandfather, Cecil Lalune, was also a caretaker for the Pokemon Tower for many years. Months had passed as the married couple took care of Cecil, only to pass away. With Cecil's last words, he asked his son to take his place as a caretaker. Roland tearfully obliged to his dying words. He vowed to take his own father's place as a caretaker of Lavender Tower.

Damien's mother works as a daycare worker for the local Pokemon daycare center, and also helps out at the Lavender Volunteer Pokemon House. The Lalune name was respected in Lavender Town, and a welcome family in the community.

After Damien was born, his mother and father wanted Damien to live a happy, sheltered life and help his father take care of Pokemon Tower. Eventually following in his footsteps, as well. Homeschooled, Damien lived under a roof of love and education. About the world, about Pokemon, and everything he needed to know so he could learn to understand what it meant to take care of Pokemon Tower.

But... Damien was born a troubled child. During his infancy, he would normally cry through the night three times a week. His parents assumed he was always fussy. During his child years, the problem had worsened. He would talk to seemingly nothing. Damien was found not able to sleep most nights. If he did, he would wake up in terror. His parents tried to help him out, and to figure out what was happening to their son. Medicine and spending time with other Pokemon had helped a bit, but Damien still bottled up the fear.

One night, Damien ran away and fled into Pokemon Tower. The night terror was so strong, Damien was at the brink. But something called out to him with great urgency, urging him to come to Pokemon Tower....

When he reached the inside, Damien began to lose his mind after he tripped, and fell to the floor, crying. His eyes were sore from how red and wet they were. His screams echoed through the halls of Pokemon Tower. He fell unconscious soon after. When he woke up, he found a trio of Ghost Pokémon, in a room that appeared to be sealed off. A Gastly, a Haunter, and a Gengar greeted with big smiles. Seeing this made Damien himself smile, especially when he noticed the spirit that plagued him seemed to be gone.

For the most part, Damien had found peace. After that incident, Damien was back to a semi-functional mentality. He even made friends with the Ghost Pokémon of Lavender Tower, and learned more about the history of the tower through them. Damien developed a bit of a dark sense of humor through them, but also found a deep respect for Pokémon Tower.

He had befriended the Ghost Pokemon in Pokemon Tower, and continued his studies with great vigor. He had developed a tendency to go out at night for walks, seeing as he couldn't sleep as well before his experience.

Eventually, his mother and father had heard of this new trainer program, and decided it would be best for Damien to meet other people around his age, and try to keep him from Pokemon Tower until he was an experienced Pokemon trainer. Damien obliged, and after he finished his education a few years later, he set off to live with an uncle in Fuschia City.

Personality: Damien, having lived in Lavender Town and repeatedly haunted, has become quite familiar with Ghost-type Pokemon. That makes Damien pretty... immune to things that are normally frightening to other people. He's not frightened off easily, and in fact, has become a huge fan of ghosts after he overcame his trauma and fears.

He likes to look at things on the funny side. He's a bit of a clown, and has a morbid sense of humor sometimes. He lets his hair down and wild, and likes to dress in dark clothing. He loves to learn, and indulge himself in reading when he's not talking to his "friends."

He became an insomniac after his childhood experiences of countless sleepless nights. He can't sleep, so he just spend his nights writing in his journal. Or talking to things that "aren't there," when in actuality, he talks to Ghost-pokemon when they are nearby. He really has a sense of adventure, always wanting to explore. Walking alone at night, exploring any abandoned areas, and generally looking for a good scare.

Hey why not. Never really got into an adventure RP before, and this one seems just laid back enough to be my cup of tea. Here's a WIP that'll probably get done this weekend; have a 10 page paper and huge final to deal with first.

Name: Chris J. Sorenson

NICE, you are accepted into the RP! I like theme songs too, might try to find one for Paige (:

:3 I kinda like this RP idea. Credit for my trainer image goes to hapuriainen of dA.

Name: Damien Lalune
Battle Beyond starter: Spinarak (Male, Quirky)
Ohhh hi! I'm so glad to see you joining, been a while :D I hope you're doing well.
Damien is accepted!

With that, we finally have enough players to start the IC. I will get to it some time in the next few days.

In the meantime: what are your thoughts on the other players' characters so far? Whom do you see your character become friends or rivals with?

Well, I'm sure Damien would have a rivalry with someone who... scares easily. `w `~

Also, since we might follow the theme song trend, I found the perfect one: Bad Manors.

Chris doesn't seem like the rivalry type individual, but I could see him getting along with Paige pretty well. If we do move as a group, I could even see Chris as a mentor if sorts. Well, maybe more like an older brother, since he's an utter newb.

Are we still allowed to apply? I can see you're about to post the IC and I'm still working on my character. I'm making a pirate. Say yes if you want an explanation.

For Paige...

Elise: She's taller and slightly older than Paige, but she seems to be way more shy. Their interests are different - Paige is social and active while Elise is quiet, but they have similar mindsets when it comes to people and pokémon - they have an easier time liking and trusting pokémon than humans, right? I think they could become great friends if they got over the trust barrier, so I'm looking forward to put them in some difficult adventures together to make them bond c:

Martin: I can't quite foresee how these two will interact, as they are soooo different from each other haha. The only thing in common I can think of is that Martin likes the creative arts, and Paige plays the guitar. Paige might not find Martin very interesting at first, but we can see if we can get them together somewhere and see how we can make them interact!

Chris: Ooh I sense a Pride & Prejudice story here (8 I mean, not necessarily with the romance, but Paige with her general skepticism towards humans who use pokémon, could easily see Chris as an annoying brat initially. Especially if he tries to be a big brother figure XD But as they'd get to know each other, if Chris really has a heart of gold and just happens to not having lived a hard life, I can totally see Paige admiring him. A playful rivalry?
Paige: "B-baka! notice me senpai"

Damien: Bit of a wildcard. Depending on how their interactions go, I can see Paige either finding him annoying or regard him with curiosity. She might be impressed with his fearlessness (:

A pirate? Haha I think I'll want to see this character before I can say anything about that :D But yeah, we're only 5 players so far so one more surely won't hurt.

Even if I do get the IC up before you've finished your character, it's fine to jump in later.
