Introduction

If you've been keeping up with the latest series of the anime, you'll know that Ash has been participating in the Pokemon World Championships. In this RP, it's another year and the world championships are taking place in the Unova region, so get battling! You're a trainer who's aspiring to be the best like no one ever was, pitted against equally-minded trainers as roleplayer fights roleplayer in a tournament to become the world champion.

This RP will be broken up into two parts, qualifying and getting to Nimbasa City for the final tournament, followed by the actual tournament. If you like battling, collaborating with other RPers, or you just want to have some fun, then this is the RP for you!

In the first part of the RP, roleplayers will be expected to write up at least one qualifying match before the tournament; it can be against your rival, a gym leader, a random trainer, another RPer - anything goes! Qualifying matches can be 1v1s, 2v2s, or 3v3s. This time period also allows people to RP while new people join in. Once you feel that you're ready, fly over to Mistralton City and make your way to Nimbasa City (unless you're from Unova, of course).

The second part of the RP is the tournament, pitting roleplayer against roleplayer. Rounds are 4v4, until the semi-finals onwards, where they are 6v6. The size of the tournament depends on the number of sign-ups the RP gets.

Match-ups will be determined randomly, although can be negotiated and changed afterwards. Who gets knocked out and who proceeds to the next round is determined by you and your combatant RPer, though you can consult me as well if you wish. Don't worry if you get knocked out of the tourney - I have potential side-stories planned for eliminated trainers.

Role of the GM

As GM, I'm taking a mostly hands-off approach, mostly just making sure you're active and corresponding with other RPers. There will be an RP Discord for planning and discussing posts, among other things. Please bug me if you have any issues, requests, etc.

I'm also open to having a co-GM if you're keen. It would just be to share responsibilities if the there's a large quantity of roleplayers. If not many people sign-up, I'll take a more active role and plan something a bit more involved and plot-heavy.

Rules

  1. Follow PC's rules and any other rules mentioned in the Roleplay Theatre.
  2. Respect other roleplayers and their characters. Don't use their characters without their consent or anything like that.
  3. Being active isn't a necessity during part 1, but is needed in part 2. Being inactive will mess up the fun for other RPers, especially during the face-offs.
  4. The RP has an M rating just to be flexible to how some people roleplay, but the RP has a T tone overall.
  5. Posts with CSS must be legible on both computers and phones.
  6. Feel free to contact me if anything pops up or you need help/advice/want me to accommodate a story idea you have.
  7. Have fun!
Sign-Ups

Name:

Age: Preferably 15-25, but minimum 10. Just run it by me first if you want to be outside the 15-25 age group, but you can be an old grandma if you want.

Gender:

Region: Doesn't have to be the one your character was born in, but must be the one they spent the most time in as a trainer.

Appearance:

Personality: General character traits and examples. What values are important to your character?

History: What has your character's Pokémon journey been like? What's their life like outside of being a trainer - any interests, family, etc.?

Pokémon:
You're allowed to have 5-8 Pokémon. If you have 5, you may need to catch one during the RP, but having 6+ is preferred. On hand, you should have 3-6 at any given point. List as many details as you wish about your Pokémon, remember, they're characters too!

No legendaries/mythicals are allowed, except Zygarde-10%, Type: Null, Silvally, and Urshifu. You are allowed to have only up to one pseudo-legendary, but not in conjunction with the aforementioned legendaries.

If your character is from Hoenn or Kalos, you can have one Mega, but it cannot be the same as one claimed by another RPer. If you're from another region, you can have a Mega so long as it corresponds to a Pokémon native to your region (e.g. Scizor in Johto). If you're from Alola, you may have one Z-crystal. Dynamaxing isn't possible in Unova.

Writing Sample: Just a paragraph or two to showcase your writing and RP style.

Question, unless I'm silly and managed to miss it somehow- how many moves can each Pokémon know? Game-style four, usual RP six, or something else?

Ooooh that's *interesting*, I'm into it. No limit on how many moves can change? Not one per Pokémon, or three per team, or anything?

I'm interested! I like a good tournament arc. You mentioned the age is 15-25, but is it okay if I make my character slightly older? I'm a little tired of playing teenagers all the time.

Lana Alanis-Young, 14, F

Appearance: Lana is 5'5", has purple eyes, and a warm olive complexion. Her long, jet black hair is grown out enough to where her right eye is completely covered by hair, not that Lana minds. Although she does find it annoying having to wear her rectangular prescription glasses.

Lana almost always wears a hoodie, regardless of the weather. She has a few with her, but the one she treasures most is one available at the Cerulean City gym's gift shop, and it'll usually be matched with sweat pants or jeans. She appears androgynously enough to where people might be unsure what her gender is at first-glance.

QlXIQRf.png

Personality: Lana is a very serious person, and it's reflected in her Pokemon battles. Most of her time is spent planning her battles, almost to her detriment. It's not uncommon for her to pull an all-nighter thinking about how she'll plan out her next battle, and because of that she's formed a dependency on caffeine, something it seems she has taken after one of her mothers.

Because she stresses so much about her battles, people will often regard her as aggressive, but those close to her know she's an intelligent, fun-loving girl. Unfortunately for those who wish to get close to Lana, she finds social interaction a waste of her time, and hasn't spoken with any friends she's made in quite some time.

History: Lana was born in Cerulean City to two mothers, Jennifer Alanis and Sasha Young. Apparently having two moms is abnormal according to her peers, and it's not clear to her how she's taken after both of them without any sort of male figure, not that she really cares about either; She loves her moms regardless.

Both of her parents have jobs that involve Pokemon battling in some way, with Jennifer (Who Lana refers to as "Mom-J") being a winner in many professional tournaments, and Sasha (who she refers to as "Mom-S") being a gym leader, specializing in dragon-type Pokemon. Even her aunt is regarded as a Pokemon Master, and her girlfriend (By some coincidence, Lana's family happens to be very gay) is from some prestigious family of battlers or something. This all accumulates into a tremendous weight Lana feels is a necessity to live up to.

She also has a younger brother, age eleven, named Hoshi. Lana always just found him pretty annoying, but more tolerable as he grew older.

When she was eleven, Lana enrolled in a trainer academy north of her hometown that her family had a history of attending. Once she graduated two years later, she was able to choose her starting Pokemon, a Bulbasaur, which she nicknamed Ivy. Lana battled and won against every Kanto gym leader, and from then participated in many local tournaments in the region.

Recently however, Lana's moms realized just how much these tournaments were stressing her out, and in some cases depriving her of sleep. They had her unwillingly take an extended break from tournaments, but that wasn't going to stop her of course. She read online about a tournament in the Unova region, a region which she saw as a land of opportunity.

Mom-J and her aunt were from Unova, and in Lana's mind, this had to be some kind of destiny for her. With all this in mind, she packed her bags and snuck out in the middle of the night to make her way to the Saffron airport, hoping to win the Pokemon World Championships.

Name: Mihira Anand
Age: 39
Gender: Female
Region: Galar, most recently

Appearance: Mihira has thick, shoulder-length black hair, medium-dark skin, and hazel eyes. She's somewhat curvy and knows how to dress to accentuate it. She's very stylish, even when on the road. She often wears heels to increase her height above her normal 5'8" and to be physically more commanding. Mihira is very collected and poised but does have a flirtatious and social side to her.

Personality: Mihira is a thorough person who prioritizes efficiency, but never haste. She dislikes people trying to engage her while working and prefers to finish everything before allowing herself leisure time. This approach to things means she appears rather aloof. The high standards she holds herself and others to means she is often irritated when people are not behaving in what she deems an appropriate manner, which drags out her critical side. Mihira almost never backs down from a challenge, though she hardly does any challenging herself. It is rare that her stoicism is obviously defeated.

Mihira is firm in her stance on most things but is always willing to collect more information and explore both sides of a story. She will never turn down an opportunity to learn or do something new. Her coworkers think her absolutely fearless, which is untrue, but they would never know otherwise.

History: Mihira grew up as one of four children of a working-class family. For a few years as a teenager, she challenged multiple regional leagues with the support of her family. However, she found herself pregnant at age seventeen and her parents subsequently cut her off. The father of her child left shortly after she was born, and Mihira spent many years working more than full time while still raising a rather energetic daughter. Now that Viveka has been independent for some years, Mihira's focus has been able to turn back to her career: journalism.

Recently, she has been travelling more frequently and writing pieces regarding various Pokémon Leagues, mimicking the journeys of younger trainers in attempt to have the most accurate, well-researched articles out there. However- to Viveka's frustration- she has skipped out on the regional tournaments every time, claiming that they are not part of the journey and therefore not her place to be.

Pokémon:
Solrock (○, Levitate) is kind of a mystery, but it's very reliable and Mihira's most dependable team member.
Flygon (♂, Levitate) is pretty cheerful, fairly oblivious, and likes to chew on things- he's held that habit over from being a Trapinch, it seems.
Corsola (♀, Natural Cure) holds grudges- Flygon once wrenched one of her branches off and she has not forgiven him- and she likes to fight. She's easily annoyed. She resides in a Lure Ball.
Torterra (♂, Overgrow) and Mihira share the same disdain for certain attitudes.
Mamoswine (♀, Thick Fat) is very lazy and really only does things when they are convenient for her. She listens to Mihira well enough, but only puts in minimum effort. She'll do stuff for treats, though. Mihira caught her eating out of her pack and decided that if she was going to feed this Swinub, it better do some damn work for her.
Aggron (♂, Rock Head) is jovial, but has a mean streak that comes out in a fight.
Runerigus (♀, Wandering Spirit) is a recent catch, and Mihira is learning to work with her still.
Torkoal (♀, White Smoke) does things in her own time.

Writing Sample:
"Whirlwind."

Pepper's PokéBall activates, leaving him on the grass between Casey and their opponents. As soon as he solidifies, Pidgeotto darts in, slamming its weight into the Charmeleon and swooping around for another charge. Pepper rolls at Casey's shout and no, he doesn't have a choice, does he?

Casey fumbles with his bag as Pepper defends with tail and crossed forearms, slinging dead-on Embers every time Pidgeotto swoops away. It's fast, much faster than Pepper, and far more mobile. But Casey's pretty fast, too, and he darts in as Pidgeotto darts out, planting the dual tanbō firmly in Pepper's claws. Staff Rush may be useless here, but the tanbō themselves aren't- Pepper lays them against his forearms, pushing back Quick and Wing Attacks until their opponent gets frustrated enough to snap out a different command. Pepper bobs and weaves, each Ember now matched with an answering Mirror Move, some dodged and some deflected with charged tanbō but both taking damage, Pidgeotto moreso than the fire-resistant Charmeleon. It tumbles in midair and lands clumsily.

Could… could he win?

The Pidgeotto closes its eyes and glows momentarily. Oh, no, jinxed it...

That's gotta be Roost; Pidgeotto opens its eyes and takes off with renewed vigor, Pepper's- slowing- barrage of Embers fizzling against a funnel of wind. Shit, okay- something else- what else-

Dragon Breath isn't nearly as flimsy as Ember and punches through the tornado with ease. But Pidgeotto dodges, and Pepper's stance needs to be so firm and planted that he can't dodge the move mirrored back at him in turn- it hits him dead-center, straight in the chest and he drops, control of his limbs lost from the numbing blow.

Spores, paralysis, helplessness-

"Return-" Casey chokes out, light arcing from Pepper's PokéBall. The tanbō clatter to the ground and for a moment, the morning is quiet.

Courtney Nair
18 - ♀ - Kanto
Appearance
Standing at just 5'1'', Courtney makes her presence known mostly with her lively ginger hair, her fashion sense, and her mannerisms… or plain loudness, if you will. She's rather thin, with a fair complexion, two big, hazel eyes and some freckles on her face.

Most of the time she'll be wearing shirts or blouses, preferably in bright colors, black denim shorts, and either trainers or sandals depending on the terrain. When it gets colder, she'll start wearing longer jeans, sweaters, and large coats (after all, she's pretty sensitive to lower temperatures).

When it comes to important occasions, Courtney will definitely try her best to spice up her outfits, for example by wearing a skirt. Even then, she's not really the best when it comes to fashion, and it shows. She usually goes for flashy over elegant, and this is quite noticeable in her make-up as well. Not that it bothers her this much, though…

Personality
Courtney is optimistic and ambitious, if not outright stubborn. That is to say, she'll always give it her all to chase her goals and even when stacked against all odds, it's pretty hard to get her to give up. This way, even if she ends up failing at something, she can still say she did her best.

This is paired up with lots of confidence and a bubbly, flamboyant attitude: Courtney likes to speak without filters and often acts sarcastic or irreverent. Yes, it doesn't make it that easy to be her best friend, but once that happens, she'll be very loyal and protective… knowing she's found someone who likes her for who she really is.

Courtney, though, can still get quite impulsive and make rash decisions. Her battle training helped a bit, sure, but this is a part of her that isn't easy to change and that shows up even outside of fights. Courtney is in fact quite vain and, on the other hand, also very defensive of her own accomplishments. After all, everyone needs to know about Courtney's outstanding firepower!

History
Born in a medium wealth family in Cinnabar Island, Courtney soon became interested in the wilderness in the heart of the island and, with it, all the Pokémon who inhabited it. From there, it didn't take long for child Courtney to start dreaming about being one of the best trainers in the world.

Her parents did their best to support her, and the girl kept pursuing her dreams even after various difficulties. She graduated, travelled around Kanto, and kept training with Gym leader Blaine himself - the person who, more than anyone, really got her passionate about Fire-types.

More interested in gauging her potential than anything else, it was Blaine who signed Courtney up for the World Tournament and let her visit a few more regions. Of course, she took this very seriously and let it be known to everyone: she was in it for the win.

Pokémon
🌋 Charizard (Cinnamon - ♂ - Blaze): Blaine's gift for Courtney. Is very stoic and diligent with training, as he was taught by the Gym Leader, but has eventually grown to like the girl regardless. By now, this is Courtney's strongest Pokémon, even though it's not necessarily her signature. Can Mega evolve into Mega Charizard Y!
🌋 Magmortar (Chili - ♀ - Flame Body): Courtney's first Pokémon, whose personality is just as spicy as her trainer. She's had a fairly strong rivalry with Cinnamon, with whom she competed to be in the spotlight, but is slowly trying to get over it.
🌋 Luxray (Zest - ♂ - Intimidate): Courtney's first catch. Very proud of his power, but also protective of Courtney. Out of battles, he loves to play and cuddle with his trainer, but don't tell anyone!
🌋 Braviary (Sumac - ♂ - Defiant): One of the girl's latest catches, but who soon became her favorite ride. He never backs down from a fight and always gives it his all, but sometimes this attitude becomes quite self-destructive.
🌋 Roserade (Paprika - ♀ - Natural Cure): A total prankster, but who usually means well. Fighting is not really her priority, especially when it comes to knock down enemies, but she'll gladly put them to sleep instead.
🌋 Shiftry (Clove - ♂ - Chlorophyll): On the opposite end of Paprika, Clove is rather touchy and takes everything very seriously, especially battles. He doesn't really care who his trainer is, as long as they can win battles.
🌋 Passimian (Nutmeg - ♀ - Receiver): Playful, rash, but always optimistic and eager to battle. Likes to show off her berry throwing abilities. Often likes to bother Anise, and, to be honest... how could Courtney blame her?
🌋 Tyrantrum (Anise - ♀ - Rock Head): Very short-tempered and somewhat lazy, unless provoked. Always demands a lot of care and does not fully trust Courtney yet, but is still formidable (and somewhat mean) in battles.

Writing Sample
Here is a post from a different roleplay, Hoenn - Square One.

Name: Carrie Tanner

Age: 30

Gender: Female (She/Her)

Region: Hoenn

Appearance: Taller than average at 5' 8", Carrie has become more full figured with age, with bright blue eyes and a light olive complexion. Her dirty blonde hair reaches to her waist when loose, so she normally does it up in a tight bun or loose ponytail. She prefers comfortable clothes over fashionable ones, and usually dresses for the warm weather of her native Hoenn. Going to other countries, she will put on a coat to stay warm.

Carrie.jpg

Personality: Confident in her own abilities, once Carrie sets her mind to something she follows through no matter what gets in her way. She has a strong sense of fair play, and will try to help those who need it and instill confidence in themselves. She feels that people can only get so far on their own, and values her friendship with her Pokémon, and thinks that interacting with people from all over the world can only make them stronger trainers and better people. Having gotten as far as she could on her own, she's incorporating new Pokémon and new ideas into this challenge. For all her confidence, she can be rather brash, quick to action but slow to think. She feels she can get better, because secretly she's rarely satisfied with where she is and strives to attain more.

History: Carrie took the Gym Challenge in Hoenn when she was younger. She collected all the badges, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the League championship. She returned home to train, and occasionally entered again, but never got into the finals. She eventually settled down in Slateport, where she owns a stall in the bustling Slateport Market selling Berries and other produce, and tending to her garden. She lives a quiet life with her wife Minamo, a former Coordinator who now works as a teacher. But when she met Mina's niece, who was going on her own journey, Carrie was inspired to try training again. The World Championship offers her a chance to battle and have fun without having to follow a set path or collect Badges, making it an ideal option.

Pokémon:
♧ Sceptile (Male, Ability: Overgrow) - Carrie's starter Pokémon. Very friendly, loves to give hugs. Can Mega Evolve, but this doesn't change his personality much.
♤ Mightyena (Female, Ability: Intimidate) - Carrie's first capture, nicknamed Rena. Grumpy and quiet, she keeps the other Pokémon in line.
♧ Breloom (Female, Ability: Poison Heal) - An adrenaline junkie who loves to fight, especially against foes she has a disadvantage against. Once punched out a Fearow and is very proud of it.
◇ Slaking (Male, Ability: Truant) - Very lazy, he doesn't actually like battling or doing work, or so it seems. He actually just likes to complain, but will readily follow his Trainers' instructions.
♤ Hariyama (Female, Ability: Sheer Force) - Work hard, play hard. She enjoys showing off her strength, and regularly trains with Breloom and Slaking, her two best friends.
♡ Altaria (Female, Ability: Natural Cure) - Actually belonging to Carrie's wife, Altaria isn't much of a fighter, but is enjoying it so far. Loved to sit on top of heads as a Swablu, and still tries to do so despite being too big.
◇ Electrode (Genderless, Ability: Aftermath) - Has a short fuse, metaphorically and literally. Actually enjoys blowing up, but has reluctantly agreed to only do so in battles.
♡ Gardevoir (Female, Ability: Synchronize) - One of Minamo's Pokémon, Gardevoir doesn't like fighting. She was convinced to join the team, under the condition she didn't have to learn many new attacks. Sticks mainly to status moves as a result.

Writing Sample: Technically this is a JP with anna, but I play Vera in this battle:

Vera scratches Sapphire behind the ears before setting her down to battle. "Do your best, Sapphire. Go get her!" Sapphire casually strolls up to Ginger, stopping just out of reach to sit and lick her paw. She starts grooming her ears, not even looking at the Buneary. Ginger stares coolly while Casey shuffles in place. Vera tries to play it cool, but can't hide a small smirk, because she knows what comes next.

Suddenly, Sapphire lunges forward and slaps Ginger in the face with a Fake Out attack! Ginger reels, the impact throwing her just off-balance enough to prevent retaliation. "Bite her, while she's off guard!" Sapphire pounces, aiming for the neck, but only gets a hold of the shoulder as Ginger tumbles to the ground. Casey calls for Pound; Ginger kicks both feet into Sapphire's belly and dislodges teeth from her shoulder. The Buneary scrambles up as Sapphire is tossed back, but a Meowth always lands on her feet.

"Sapphire, keep your distance! Ginger's stronger than she looks." A little backhanded, but a compliment nonetheless. "Keep moving, and use Pay Day." The golden charm atop Sapphire's head glows, and small gold bits spontaneously appear around her. She gathers a handful of the coins to throw at Ginger, eyes wide as she watches her foe's movements. Ginger ducks and weaves, coins occasionally catching her as she starts to choose rolls and bounces to cover distance, her focus entirely on Sapphire while Casey watches the field.

Ginger bounces higher, and Casey falls back to his preferred technique- "Frustration!"- but Ginger doesn't bounce high into the air, doesn't use gravity to compound the force of the blow. She springs forward, accelerating with each touch of her nimble feet to the ground, and slams her entire body into Sapphire, sending both flying back toward Vera. "Oh, that's- hey, that's Quick Attack!"

"That's new…" Vera tries to figure out how to counter that. It's not as strong as Frustration was, but didn't Casey say Frustration was getting weaker? But it's fast, so maybe… hell with it, I'll just attack. "Sapphire, slow down her attack with Icy Wind!" Sapphire shakes off the hit, exhaling a blast of freezing fog as Ginger stands.

I have a few questions before I start on my form, is it one character per person, would making a professor character be ok, and would Delta Pokémon be ok? I'm fine with making one character, and I understand if you don't want Delta Pokémon
