So you're always going to get people on forums who don't have much of a filter when it comes to what they say, although there's plenty of opportunity to edit or rethink it. It's a social blind spot, and its not limited to real-life conversations. It does generate friction, though, and it's annoying for all sides.

For users who are... errm, like me, maybe there could be a little function where a pop-up appears before it allows you to submit a post, urging you to re-read it and make sure it's forum friendly, or at the very least not too controversial. Now, it could be annoying, and one could potentially become desensitised to it and just click off it at soon as possible, but the hope is that it would create the habit of always double checking.

It could be an enforced function, where only the staff can decide whether it's activated or not, or in the hands of the user. In the latter's case, the genuine troublemakers would probably keep it deactivated, but at least that'd be visible to the staff and they could see who was making an effort or not.

It's a weird idea, but I could sure use it.

i dunno about a popup but it might be interesting to have reddit-style placeholder text reminding you about the rules before you start typing. it would certainly need to be a section-specific or even tag-specific thing (ie, for the [Serious] tag) but it wouldn't be a bad feature.

Yeah, but for some reason the rules don't tend to have any impact on me. It's on a very broad, generalised note, like saying 'don't be rude', but one's metre for rudeness can be completely warped. And seeing what others can get away with just twists it more, and in real life one can call somebody a complete gitface and not get any reaction, so there's this constant distortion effect. Also, some shades of humour don't translate well online. Particularly those centred around innards.

A pop-up is a bit intrusive, I suppose. But it needs to be something that can't be easily overlooked.

I wouldn't mind Reddit-esque hover popups/notices/textbox background warnings in some cases. On Reddit, the purpose is to either inform the user if something is different than usual (non-participation mode) or remind everyone of a rule that may get overlooked elsewhere but applies to that sub in particular. In your case, I don't know that I agree that it's necessary. PC is pretty tolerant and we tend to give a lot of chances. If your personal filter is combating with our rules, I think that's something you need to personally work on. If you see a notice every time you go to post, you're just going to get desensitized to that pretty quickly too, and then what...? More invasive notices?

This might something we can look into for special cases, like what Dakota gave as examples, but I don't know that it's something we'd take action for for your use case.

If you're just looking for a second chance to look over your post before you post it, maybe you could try to get into the habit of typing your reply in the quick reply box and always previewing your post in the full editor to give it a read-through before submitting it in full?

Yeah, the desensitisation thing is a factor. An annoying one. And I keep working on my filter, but there are a lot of hiccups along the way and each bad mood means a regress. Safeguards aren't that realistic though, hrmm. Socialising is such a mind field.

And the last thing is worth a shot. Still, laziness permeates...!
