I've actually been lost in the woods before - about a year or two ago. I went to a party held by my mom's friend, in her pasture, and I decided to take a walk in the surrounding woods. Being a city girl, I figured I could go moderately far as long as I remembered where I'd turned, and I was just - so wrong. I ended up literally wandering around the woods sobbing - traumatic at the time, but I can look back on it and laugh. My mom found me before it got dark - it didn't even ruin the party! (Although my mom said that she was very close to having her friend get the tractor out to search for me.) I don't know exactly how long I was out there, but at one point I saw a boom barrier (that arm thing you see at toll booths and railroad crossings), and when I told my mom's friend, she didn't know about it, so I definitely left the property. The worst thing is, apparently the trail I set off on was supposed to be circular - I have no idea how this even happened!

I was at a funfair at night. A child, tired and dazzled. My mind was wandering, and I was gradually drifting from the people I was with. Fairy lights and arcades lined my path, with a full moon overhead. A flick of the eyes and the world was reduced to a dizzy smear of colour. I blinked and pow! My companions vanished into the ether of visual noise. I was suddenly surrounded by the employee's of P.T Barnum's circus. People on stilts. Zombies. Dog Boy. I spun around, unsure of direction.

Then a dwarf intercepted me - eyes glinting, hairline receded into vagueness. "Are you lost?" he inquired with a smirk. Encoded politeness mingled with fear. I attempted a smile. Then I caught sight of one of my companions waving at me from ahead. Whether I said anything is lost to my memory. I dashed ahead of him and rejoined my entourage - safe, but for how long...?

Yeah, true story. Even the bit about the dwarf, though I'm not sure if that's the correct term or whatnot.

oof. boy, do i have a story about getting lost.

okay, so it's july 3rd, and i live in america. in the heart of yee yee cowboy country, nonetheless. so even thought it's not the fourth of july yet, there's a good amount of parties and fireworks and all that jazz. but earlier in the afternoon, before any of that started, i was at my friend's house. let's call him andy. so i was at andy's house with him and his best friend, my now-girlfriend who we're gonna call kaylee, and her girlfriend at the time who was also a close friend of mine when this all went down, who we're gonna call daisy.

so we've got syd (me), andy, kaylee, and daisy, hanging out at andy's house on the third of july.

the four of us, being obnoxious teenagers, decided we were going to go out and have a fourth of july picnic and photoshoot, because all of our instagrams needed a new post. we packed what's called a personal watermelon, which is basically a tiny watermelon i could fit in my little backpack from brandy melville, a blanket, and a knife (for cutting the watermelon). we do our makeup and get all cute before we head out, hearts set on a cute picnic in the woods that andy said he knew how to navigate. spoiler alert: he exaggerated a little. that boy did not know how to get through those woods.

we make it into the woods just fine. and before you go off thinking that these weren't "real woods", there was a gate we had to get through and several signs about how this area was dangerous and there were wild animals and how this was, in fact, a real wood. but again, we're dumb teenagers, and we trusted andy enough to lead us home safe and sound. so we followed him past a little river and decide to set up camp there, laying down our little blanket and breaking out the watermelon. we had a really good time until the sun set. that's when the fireworks started going off, and drunk men started yelling, and we were scared for our lives. andy and daisy are deathly afraid of fireworks, as loud noises bring them both to tears. so as we tried to find our way out of these damned woods, they were in the back, crying violently and holding each other. kaylee and i held hands tighter than i've ever held anyone's hand before, and everyone's phone was dead except for mine and hers. daisy asked if we could play music, to keep her from being too afraid of the rustles and cracks and things in the woods that go bump in the night.

kaylee said sure, and so we listened to lana del rey's national anthem because it was the only song that would load with no signal. so, on repeat, we listened to lana del rey sing national anthem as two people cried, fireworks going off overhead. i was shaking like a madman and honestly everything after that is a sweaty, fearful blur. but we made it out alive, and we went to a gas station to get baby bottle pops and cups of ice to chew on while we laid down on andy's trampoline and laughed at all our mistakes.

I have a really bad sense of direction.

One Saturday night I was out with friends downtown, and I missed the last metro to get home. I was living in Madrid at the time and had just moved to a new area that was on the edge of town, and more like the suburbs. To get back home I had to take a convoluted bus route that I had never used, a buddy told me about. When I I got to the end of the line it was not the street I was accustomed to getting off on, but told the street was not many blocks away and in walking distance. On the walk home I came to a crossroads, and was not sure whether to go left or right, I forgot. Sure enough, I picked the wrong way, and ended up making a great big circle back to where I came from. I was literally walking away from my neighborhood and headed back downtown!

I didn't realize how far off course I had gone until I ended up almost staggering onto the motorway-- that was how many miles I had walked. Thankfully there was no traffic, no cars to run over me, no creeps to rob me. It was an empty street, an eerily quiet night. I stood there under a billboard looking foolish. I was so lost. I had no phone, I had also lost my wallet earlier. The only thing that saved me was a taxi cab that the angels sent, and I gave the man my address and he got me home.

I with with my family at a large theme park at night, when we all went to rest on a bench. No room left so I sat on the ground and tiredly put my head to my knees. Then looked up a couple minutes later to find my family was gone.

Being in a large theme park, 8 years old with no phone and not knowing what to do, I ended up crying. Not loudly though, mostly sobbing. I didn't know if I was supposed to approach a stranger for help in this situation, or just wait at the entrance of the park. A few minutes later a sibling found me.

Aww, that sucks. :frown: (I can definitely relate to the sobbing.)

I think I was about three to five. I don't know if it counts as getting lost... but my parents told me the story. I remember a bit of it. I got left on the elevator once because I was looking out the glass windows. I didn't know my parents had gotten off. That's pretty much all I remember tbh.

Hmm, I once fell into a dry well (yes) in a rather isolated place and almost broke my leg (a rock fell over it), I would probably stay there for hours or days if my brother didn't go search for help.
