Darkness Rising

Background

Long ago, humans and Pokemon lived together in harmony. Or at least, that's what everyone believed. For humans, harmony was just a word, an idea, a goal to aspire to. Pokemon, for the most part, liked the world the way it was, but there was no shortage of Humans trying to recreate the world. Eventually, they succeeded, but perhaps not the way they meant to. Oceans swelled and boiled, continents shifted and broke, space was warped and time was bendable. The world was forever altered, but it eventually recovered from the chaos. Humans no longer exist, but remnants of their society and their cities remain. Pokemon survived and thrived in their new world, although they had to adapt to fit the new world order.

But that's ancient history. Pokemon moved on and took over, and most didn't have the drive that humans did, content to live their lives in peace. Some, however, were ambitious. Entire cities lay uninhabited, and some Pokemon decided to move in, and try to fix them up or adapt them as they could. Those that were relatively human in size and shape had the easiest time, and started populating the old buildings. Other Pokemon had ambition, but not to recover the old world. Some wanted to rule the new one.

The Legendary Pokemon, many of whom had been tools in the humans' plots, had vanished, out of shame for their role in the sundering of the world, or disgust at what was left. But, Legendary or not, they were still Pokemon, and would eventually return to the world in one form or another. From a parallel world, the Lord of Distortion and Master of Chaos emerged, a being of unmatched power known as Giratina. He destroyed any who opposed him, and those who didn't lived under his rule, becoming his servants and playthings. With no other Pokemon strong enough to defeat him, all hope seemed lost, until a relic of the old world was found. The Red Chain, a device capable of summoning and shackling even a Legendary Pokemon, was to be used as a last resort, but a team of heroes led by a Pokemon named Gallant Rose found a way to reverse the Chain's power, using it to seal Giratina in a pocket dimension where he could do no harm. The Pokemon of the land rejoiced, and united under the banner of Gallant Rose, whom they named King, ruler of the land of Rosalia.

That was 1000 years ago. Today, the Kingdom is split, with Modernists living in their cities, and Naturalists living out in the wild. The Modernists are few in number, but grow their own resources, and refuse to open their doors to the Naturalists, whom they see as wild animals. The Naturalists in turn are forced to take whatever measures necessary to survive, though they outnumber the Modernists. To make matters worse, rumors have started spreading about portals to the Distortion World appearing, hinting at the return of Giratina. With tensions between the two groups at an all-time high, the Royal Family chooses to ignore these rumors.

Your Role

The Red Chain, long ago retooled into the Royal Scepter of Rosalia, is unable to close these portals, as the power it once had has drained over the years. To seal away Giratina again, it must be wielded by a member of the Royal bloodline, but it must first be taken to the eight Shrines of the Heroes, where its power can be restored. Only Princess Skyla Rose is willing to undertake this mission, but she cannot do it alone.

You play as one of Princess Skyla's guardians, a Pokemon who has agreed to escort and protect the Princess on her quest. A member of the Royal Guard doing their duty, a mercenary hired for their skill and discretion, a Modernist whose life was flipped turned upside by a distortion portal, or a Naturalist looking to buy their way into a city, you can be any Pokemon you desire (except Legendaries), with whatever backstory and motivation you'd like.

Gameplay

This RP will be mainly event based, as the party moves from one location to another on their journey. The players as a group will determine where we go next, or they may leave it to the GM. Some sandbox elements are involved, as players may do whatever they want in each location, with the ultimate goal of reaching the Shrine and powering up the Scepter.

We play as Pokemon in a world without humans, Pokeballs, or many staples of the series. Levels, stats, IV's, EV's, and even moves will not be included, with a Pokemon's powers and abilities based on their type, body, and basic abilities (i.e. Charizard has claws, breathes fire, and can fly; while Machamp has super strength and four arms). Evolution occurs when certain conditions are met, such as contact with a Stone or other evolution item, they reach a certain state of personal growth, or they perform a "heroic feat" (i.e. throwing themselves in front of an attack to protect a friend, evolving and gaining the strength needed to survive). This most likely won't have any importance for you, unless you want evolution to be part of your story.

Sign-Up Sheet

  • Name: What do others call you? As simple or complex as you like. I'll accept "Andy" just as readily as "Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All".
  • Gender: Male, Female, or None. You know how this works.
  • Species: What kind of Pokemon are you? How do you do the things you do? Any Pokemon, except Legendaries or Babies. Basic, fully evolved, or in-between.
  • Personality: What are you like? Just a paragraph or so is fine. This is more of a guideline, really.
  • Brief History: Where did you grow up, what shaped your destiny, and why are you joining the quest? One good paragraph or more, please.
  • Other: Anything else you want to add? Unusual appearance, any clothing they wear, favorite color? This is optional.

Rules

  1. The GM has final say in all decisions, disputes, or questions.
  2. All RPT rules apply.
  3. Do not God-Mod or Bunny without permission. Refer to the RPT rules if you do not understand these terms.
  4. Be respectful at all times. We're all friends here, after all.
  5. Try to be active. Preferably at least a post every two weeks. If something comes up, let me know. If you disappear without a word, I'll get worried and start bothering you and everyone you know until I get an answer.
  6. Go easy on me. I'm new to GM'ing, but I want us all to have fun.

Accepted Players
  1. - None yet.

Interesting decision to omit moves entirely since beyond TMs and tutors, I've never thought of them as a sign of domestication. But anyways, since this means a Pokemon's abilities are solely based on their physical feats, how much are players allowed to borrow from the source material and how much leeway are you willing to provide when it comes to interpretations? The canon on certain species is either limited or inconsistent, and some in-game Pokedex entries are flat-out ridiculous since they also stated Slugma being twenty times hotter than the surface of the sun.

On that note, any opinions on game-breaking feats like clairvoyance?

If you'd like, use the Pokemon's moveset as guidelines for their abilities. Most of the more fantastic entries like Slugma's temperature or Alakazam's 5000 I.Q. will be ignored, but if you want to implement something along those lines, I'd be happy to discuss and work something out. Perhaps I'll make that the official rule. That's the purpose of this Interest Check: to get feedback and tweak some things if need be.

As for game-breaking feats, give them a pass. If you break the game, the others can't enjoy it. But honestly, divination, clairvoyance and the like would be best handled via direct message to the GM. I won't forbid psychic powers, but I will have a direct hand in how much information you receive.
