[Scripting Question] Dependency Script for NPCs?

I am trying to add dependency event script for NPC trainers and non-trainers to having Pokemon following them around, so when I talk to the Pokemon, the NPC stops and vice versa. Also when I am approached by a trainer, their Pokemon follows behind them. The current dependency script only allows adding dependencies to the player. I'm not sure where to start.
