WitchHunt

*PLEASE NOTE: This OP contains A LOT of information as well as some rules that may differ from the norm. Please make sure you read everything carefully!*

New Players

New players are always welcome! A description of how the game works can be found below, but you may also find Gunner's guide helpful!

Overview

WitchHunt is a Mafia variant in which two factions try to eliminate the other: the Witches (the informed minority) and the Villagers (the uninformed majority). The Witches all know each other, however the villagers don't know who is a witch or who is a villager. It's up to the villagers to use their hunting and deduction skills to figure out who is a villager and who is a witch, while the witches will be trying to avoid suspicion and mislead the village.

The game goes through cycles of two phases: Day and Night. During the Day, the players discuss publicly in the thread to decide on a player to lynch. At Night, the thread is considered "locked" and players may no longer discuss until the next Day phase. The Witches will also choose a target to kill and eliminate from the game, and their kill will be announced in the thread at the start of the next Day.

In this game, it's important to be careful with the information you have! It may prove useful to conceal information or lie, not just for the Witches but for the Villagers as well. Anyone could claim or say anything to try and outwit the other team!

Note that unlike most typical mafia games, there are no role flips/alignment reveals for players upon death! It will be a mystery which team someone might be working for...

The game ends when the Villagers eliminate all Witches or when the Witches equal or outnumber the Village, or if these situations are inevitable.

Note: I did not come up with this game/variant, all credit goes to the user Chocolate Pi (I've only made a couple of my own changes)

Player Assignments (Role and Type)

Each player will be assigned a specific Role and a Type.

Most roles have a special/unique ability of some sort. Abilities can be offensive, defensive, mechanical or informational.

Player type is separate from role and determines which team a player is on. Most roles could end up being any alignment!

At the start of the game the Witches get an additional, unassigned role and a single Witch may trade their own role with that of the extra role, allowing the Witches a limited amount of optimization of their role assignments.

Only the Witches know which role was given to them as an extra, so they can use that knowledge later in the game to their advantage in playing around town strategies. Also note that since the extra role is not assigned to a player, any ability that it may have is not usable during the game.

Village Player Types

Villager - The most common player type, Villagers are here to hunt down the Witches and use their role to help the Village.

Holy Villager - The most powerful type, Holy roles are assigned only to Holy Villagers. These roles are always aligned with the Village and cannot be assigned to any Witches.

*The King is a special case. Though not considered Holy, the King is always Village aligned, but will not appear as Holy when checked by roles such as the Inquisitor.

Witch Player Types
Witch - Witches start in the Coven. They know each other and can communicate privately at all times, and also vote for a target to kill each night.

Remember: Any role besides Holy roles can be any type - Village or Witch!

Roles

Depending on the number of players, some roles may be removed/unused.
Spoiler:

The Witches

The Witches as a faction have some extra tricks they can use during the game!

Last Stand: If the Witches are ever down to one living player, they may kill up to two targets per night.

Illusion Kill: Once in the game, the Witches may make an Illusion Kill (in addition to or instead of their regular night kill). The target of an Illusion Kill always survives (their death is always announced even if they survive). This could be useful late in the game!

The Witches also always have the option to not kill during the night, and they can choose to kill someone on their own team if they wish.

The King's Court

The King's Court is a group of appointed players - one appointed by the King, and two others appointed by the living players.

During the first night, the King will elect a player of their choosing to the Court. Additionally during the first night, all living players will privately vote on who to appoint to the Court. The top two choices will be added. The Court can only have a maximum of 4 players, and the King is automatically a member of the Court. (In the event that the King is one of the top choices voted by the other players, the player with the next most votes will be added instead).

Appointed players will have a private chat where they can communicate at all times. Members will not be informed of anyone else's roles or alignments. Members may vote on a target to kill during the night, however the Court has a limited number of kills - the Court may only kill three times. If a targeted player survives in any way, the Court will not be able to target them again. They may also vote to kill no one.

If the King ever disagrees with the rest of the Court on a particular kill target, they may once choose to cancel the kill. All other Court members will be privately informed that the kill was cancelled if the King does this.

If the Court falls below 3 members at any point, it will be disbanded, alternatively it will disband automatically at a certain point. As long as the Court holds 4 members, the King will be immune to any kills (but not lynches or being targeted by the Loose Cannon).

The identities of the King and the appointed players will not be made public. It will be publicly stated if and when the Court disbands, however.

Dead Players

Once dead, players can no longer communicate in the thread with the living players and may no longer use their roles/abilities. Instead, they may communicate with the other dead players and continue to watch the game as it unfolds.

Dead players are NOT eliminated completely from the game, however! Instead they continue to help their faction as an Angel or a Demon.

Please note that while dead, players observe all actions made, or information gained by all players. For example, at the end of a typical night, dead players might learn

1. The players in the coven & their kill target. (eg: The Witch Coven of Amy, Bob and Cindy voted to kill Dave)
2. The priest and his check target. (eg: Errol the Priest checked Fred, who is not in the Coven)
3. That the fanatic was checked and now has an extra life. (eg: Fred the Fanatic was checked by the Priest & gained an extra life)

If there are only dead players from a single group (Angels or Demons), then only that group will learn the info for that phase.

Angels and Demons

All dead Villagers are Angels and all dead Witches are Demons.

Angels may vote as a group to protect any player from the Witches' kill that night. The chosen player will be protected against the Witches' kill, but not any other kill sources.

Each night, the Demons may pick two targets to Haunt. This effects both the Priest and the Angels - if the Priest checks either Haunted player that night, he will receive the result for the other instead! Secondly, if the Angels protect either of the two Haunted players, they may never protect that target again.

Additionally, Angels may only protect a Haunted player if there are more Angels than Demons.

In other words, the Angels can stand in the Witches' way, but the Demons can stand in the Angels' way; all in layers of dares and bluffs!

Note that in order for this to flow smoothly, Demons must choose who they wish to Haunt by the halfway point each night, so that Angels may react accordingly.

Finally, once per game, the Angels may protect two targets.

Plurality votes are used to determine the Angel protections and the Demon hauntings (meaning whoever gets the most votes will be protected or haunted), as such if anyone does not wish to follow along once they are dead, there is no penalty for doing so!

Questions

How does protection work exactly?

Protection blocks a single kill that occurs at night. Further, Protection stacks, so if you have two sources of protection (say you are the Gambler and Angels target you), it would take three kills in one night to kill you.

Also note that all kill attempts are made public, so if someone were to survive one kill, but die to a second that would be revealed upon day start. Similarly if someone is killed twice in the same night, that would be shown at the start of day.

When does the DOB / BOD go off?

All deaths are announced during DAY, so the DOB / BOD kill or +life always occur during day.

How are night actions resolved?

First, Demons choose their Haunt targets, then all non kill actions are resolved, then all kills are resolved. This means that nothing is interrupted or otherwise impeded by the target or recipient of an action being killed in the night.

How does the Peeping Tom work exactly?

The Peeping Tom may observe any completely private interaction made with the moderator, whether it be passive or active. This includes Gravedigger, Watchman, Inquisitor, Judge & Hunter. If the observed role is not alive, the Peeping Tom may make a decision in their place (where applicable), additionally, the player being targeted by the PT is informed & may queue their actions accordingly. It is acceptable for roles to conditionally target 'The Peeping Tom' if they are observed by the PT.

If the PT targets Gravedigger or Judge, the Angels are told in the End of Day information dump, when targeting any other role, the angels are told in the End of Night information dump.

Additionally, if the PT targets the extra, unused Witch Role, that role will be considered dead and the PT may make decisions or gather information in their place. At the end of the day or night that this occurs, the Witches will be told that the PT observed their spare role was dead.

What happens if the Gravedigger or Judge is the unassigned role and the Apprentice picks them?

The Apprentice will be told that nobody has that role and they will immediately gain the powers of the Gravedigger or Judge.

Voting and Deadlines

All Day phases will be 72 hours and all Night phases will be 24 hours.

Any roles that can choose to reveal themselves will extend the day by 24 hours (or some other appropriate amount) at the GM's discretion.

Votes should always be in bold and (for this game) preferably on a separate line if a post is large.
Acceptable voting formats: [Vote] Player, [Lynch] Player, [Execute] Player

Votes can be changed at any time during the day, as many times as you want. You may [Unvote] to remove a vote from a player or when changing votes.

A player must have a majority of votes at the end of the day to be lynched. If no player has a majority, or a majority of players vote to No Lynch, the decision defers to the Judge. The Judge's identity remains private, and the result is announced. If the Judge is dead or declines Judgment, no one is lynched.

The number of votes that constitute a majority will be clearly posted at the start of each day. The day can be ended early with a near unanimous vote (unanimous-minus-one).

Vote counts will be provided regularly as the game goes on!

Queued Actions

Roles that make immediate game decision at the start or end of a phase (such as Judge, DOB, BOD) need to have their desired action queued with the GM - this is to allow the game to run smoothly, as (for example) needing to wait for the Judge to check-in and decide who to lynch after a No-Lynch day could take many hours.

Additionally, players may have to be away from a computer when they would desire to make critical game decisions. Players can work with the GM in advance to easily address these circumstances.

If you are AFK and want to queue an action related to your role, please PM it to me or send it on Discord. You cannot queue votes except in extraordinary cases.

RULES

1. All PC and Underground rules apply!
2. Remember, this is a game, so have fun! Discussion might get heated at times but don't make things personal!
3. All game discussion should be kept here in the game thread and any private chats, you may not discuss the game outside of the game thread/private chats with anyone (whether they are playing in the game or not). Further, once players are dead they may not discuss anything with living players.
4. No dead posts allowed! Once you are dead, please refrain from posting in the thread, and please also refrain from 'Liking' any posts in the thread.
5. Posting during the night phase is not allowed!
6. You may not quote directly from your Role PM, you will need to paraphrase when discussing your role.
7. You may not quote any private discussion that you have with me (it's probably best to avoid even referencing it in the thread).
8. You also may not post any screenshots of any kind of private communication, your Role PM, screenshots to prove active lurking, etc.
9. Editing posts is not against the rules, but please try to avoid doing it frequently. Players are encouraged to double post if they need to.
10. Faking an activation of certain roles (such as the Loose Cannon) is probably a bad idea. Don't do it.

ACTIVITY RULES

- When joining this game, players are expected to maintain a decent activity level.
- Players must make at least 4 posts per day phase
- Players must post at least once every 48 hours
- Failing to meet these requirements twice (these failures need not be consecutive) will result in replacement for inactivity (or in a modkill if necessary)
- A day phase ending early will not be counted against anyone unless it's been at least 48 hours and someone hasn't posted in that time.
- If you're going to be busy/inactive for an extended period of time, please let me know! If you're going to be busy for more than just a few days, you may want to request replacement!

SIGNUPS

Signups are open! I may also need replacements, so if you'd like to volunteer as a replacement let me know! Also let me know if anyone would like to spectate/observe!

Not sure if this is the best game to get back into Mafia, but whatever. I'll bite. :D
Hey, welcome back you two! :)

Can I definitely count on you guys to meet the activity requirements? Just want to make sure because I'm gonna be sooper-dooper strict about activity this game (basically 2 strikes and you're out)

Thanks! Glad to be back.

It's Summer, so those activity requirements shouldn't be a problem. :)
