I also don't understand why the SM series is getting so much positive feedback as well. Part of me thinks the format change had to do with it, but these people that I keep seeing that "like" the Alola saga, they are failing to recognise it does have its flaws which is what I like picking out.

you see it for its flaws, other people see it for its positive attributes. if that's something you can't understand, then that's your own fault tbqh.

Why see something for just one or the other though. Why not look at the whole picture?

Every saga has flaws.

I enjoy SM while acknowledging things aren't perfect (because nothing is). I think the pro's out weigh the cons. I also have fun/get enjoyment from watching it. It's doing a lot right for me.

I feel the only pro to me at the moment is the personality of the Pokemon, namely Mallow's Steenee and Lana's Popplio. And of course Rowlet as well.

I haven't seen every episode and I'm somewhat going by the recaps being posted but so far I'm not really into it either. Without gyms and Ash traveling to different locations there's no real story. There's much more slapstick and showcasing Pokémon than battling. It's funny and the animation looks great and the two dub episodes had awesome background music, but otherwise it's pretty unexciting.

Before he's moving about so there's a sense of 'well, he's travelling so yeah, he's making progress'. But in SM, he's confined to the same stationary setting which gives the impression he's doing nothing.

There is a story though.
Spoiler:
-Ash already has two Pokemon and they're building up the third.
-He's cleared a trial and has two Z-crystals (quicker than every other saga).
-Lillie is making progress with her fear of Pokemon
-Tapu Koko has taken an interest in Ash.
-The side characters have their own goals and pursue them outside of Ash
-Aether has been teased

Stuff is happening, it's just not on the same road as what the fans are used too.

Lack of battling is something that should be addressed. Although in SM019 we get two battles, of which one is relevant to a storyline. I do wish they bring in a human rival for Ash soon, hopefully Gladion because of Lillie tie-ins. Hau, while fun, is extremely similar to Ash in personality. Gladion would be a better contrast.

Pokémon needs meaningful battles that are relevant in advancing the plot. The formula used for the first 19 seasons worked well enough to keep the show on the air.

Yeah, I am not really liking the new animation style either.

I'm sorry but the animation is very good, there's no doubt about that. Most people just don't like Ash's new look, but I like it tbh.

I know the animation isn't bad, but it's the art style that has drawn more controversy, especially regarding Ash's new design which I view as the laziest outfit he's ever worn.

SM Ash's outfit is pretty much an exact copy of the male protagonist from the games, other than the colour changes on the shirt and hat. The pants and shoes are exactly the same as the game protagonist. It's the lack of edits made to the outfit that make it my most hated Ash design to date, because I hate laziness in design.

I don't see it as a problem personally to have Ash's outfit be the same as the game counterparts. The outfit is fitting for the particular setting. His original outfit was pretty similar to Red's in the original games.

Erika is one of my favorite gym leaders of all the games. But I'd say Misty was my favorite gen 1 gym leader.

On another note, yesterday I started my 151 run on Pokemon Blue. I will use my spring break time to catch all 151 Pokemon. (With help of a Pokemon Red version.). I'll be doing that with Silver in the future too

I think Erika was a well-designed character, because she served to remind you that Pokemon is a Japanese-based franchise.

I think the gen 1 designs were nice, character wise. Except for the trainers that use whips on their pokémon... They sure hadn't fully formed the pokémon franchise and mentality back then O.o now we have Pokémon Refresh and stuff.
