Overview

Paqori is a region on the western edge of a large continent. Its borders are naturally defined by the course of a large river that enters the country in the north and immediately splits in two and flows all the way to the sea, separating Paqori from its neighboring lands. A good-sized volcanic island to the south is also part of the region, though not much is there.

There are currently ten major cities in Paqori, all connected by well-maintained roadways. Five cities are connected directly by rail, with two other cities having train stations just outside the city limits. Motorized vehicles are not restricted but rarely used due to the expense of import. They are also not considered a necessity to daily life, as the rail system makes transit easy for most places beyond walking distance.

The region has three distinct zones. The northeastern rainforests make up about 25% of the region and are largely undeveloped and even unexplored, but are home to a huge variety of Pokémon. The coastal area, making up 15% of the region, is a cool, arid environment that is sparse in human activity. There is a volcanic chain in the south that extends to the island off the southern coast. The fertile mountains and highlands of the central area make up around 60% of the land and are home to the majority of the human population and most of the documented Pokémon.

Paqori is a very wealthy region that is high in natural resources. The people of Paqori work hard, but are never in need of basic necessities. Its year-round growing season allows for continuous production of all types of food. Each household maintains a small personal farm as their main food source, boosted by surplus created by the vast farmland around [5] and stored primarily in government reserves in [6]. Farming and herding are the most common occupations in Paqori, closely followed by textile design and creation. Mining and quarrying are also common, but is managed by the government due to environmental concerns. Textiles are incredibly important for both surviving the chill of the mountains and to preserve the culture surrounding such creations. Almost everyone is involved with textiles in some way- from caring for and shearing Mareep and Whimsicott, to making clothing, to weaving intricate creations for ceremonies and export.

Notes: The Paqori region takes heavy influence from the Incan Empire, Quechua, and Peru. If you know a lot about any of these things and I'm going a weird direction with some of this feel free to chat with me about it; I'd love that!

Continuous food? YUM!
Also, what's the region around Paqori, or is it just nameless
The continent and the lands nearby are nameless thus far! I welcome anyone to place their regions nearby if they want to use the same terrain, or even elsewhere on the continent. :)

I've got a WIP PokeRegion I'd offer to attach to yours, but mine's temperate and yours seems tropical so I dunno how well that would work.

Pokédex 001-050

· 001 · Mareep
Mareep is one of the most common Pokémon in Paqori due to its economic importance. The domestic herds are far woolier and less coarse-haired than their wild relatives due to centuries of selective breeding.

· 002 · Flaaffy
Flaaffy are more likely to be found in the wild than in domestic herds. The expense of feeding and caring for a Flaaffy far outweighs its value as a producer of wool. If domestic Mareep evolve, they are usually slaughtered for their meat.

· 003 · Ampharos
Ampharos are occasionally found in the wild and tend to be the protectors of their herds. Domestic Ampharos are almost exclusive to trainers.

· 004 · Cottonee
Like Mareep, they are incredibly common and primarily domestic, bred for higher quantities of finer wool. Due to the food grown in mineral-rich soil across the region, Cottonee eventually build up enough Sunstone deposits in their body to evolve into Whimsicott.

· 005 · Whimsicott
Whimsicott are far more useful to the people of Paqori than their pre-evolution due to the amount of fine wool they produce. Over generations of domestication, it has been found that a Whimsicott's coat will gradually change color according to their diet. Thus, many herders are very strict with what they feed their herds.

· 006 · Skiddo
Fairly common in the wild during Gogoat's foaling seasons. Unlike other known variants of their species, they are a Rock/Grass type.

· 007 · Gogoat
Very common in the wild, moreso than Skiddo, as their growth and evolution are spurred on by practise sparring. They are kept domestically in small groups for their milk, which is usually made into cheese. They are also the favored pack animals of the mountains due to their sure footing on treacherous terrain. Like Paqori Skiddo, their typing is Rock/Grass.

· 008 · Lillipup
This family is not native to Paqori, but were introduced long ago to assist with herding. The population is now rather out of control, and many can be seen wandering the cities and surrounding areas.

· 009 · Herdier
The preferred stage of this Pokémon family, Herdier can be seen across the region as an assistant to shepherds and guardian of homesteads. They are also common around cities, like Lillipup.

· 010 · Stoutland
Stoutland are used primarily by police and search-and-rescue parties due to their ability to track people down.

· 011 · Minccino
Kept as household pets and playmates for children. Their tidy nature makes household cleaning a near non-necessity for their owners, and they teach children to clean as well. Despite their pickiness regarding their environment, they will eat nearly anything.

· 012 · Cinccino
In addition to Minccino's habitual behaviour, Cinccino are often trained to help in the homestead's gardens, as they are more meticulous and docile than their pre-evolution.

· 013 · Mudbray
Not native to Paqori and seen more often in the foaling season of their species. They are trained and evolved fairly quickly due to their versatility as work animals, but Mudbray are still useful pack animals as they are.

· 014 · Mudsdale
The preferred work animal of the lowlands. Mudsdale can carry more, travel faster, and are easily trained to be ridden and to pull carts and plows- as opposed to Gogoat. However, they are less sure of foot and so stick to easier terrain. They are common domestic animals in the lowlands, but nonexistent in the wild.

· 015 · Pancham
Paqori Pancham are much more docile and friendly than their cousins in other regions. They are curious and will wander over to inspect humans travelling through their territory. As friendly as they are, it is recommended that humans do not interact with them, as their mothers are very protective. Paqori Pancham's fur coloring on their heads is inverted compared to Pancham of other regions- their ears and rings around their eyes are a creamy white, whereas the rest of their head is black.

· 016 · Pangoro
They are warier of humans than their young, but will not attack unless provoked or under the impression that one of their children are in danger. They are primarily vegetarian, but eat some fish to supplement their diet. Paqori Pangoro, like the Pancham, have inverted fur colors on their heads as well as orange-streaked black on their stomach rather than white. Their typing is Dark/Rock.

· 017 · Woobat
Common across the region in natural caves and overhangs. Very friendly toward humans, though most people are alarmed when the Woobat swarm in an attempt to greet them.

· 018 · Swoobat
Less common than Woobat, but still very friendly toward humans. Often are willing to guide lost people and Pokémon back out of the maze of caves they inhabit.

· 019 · Wingull
Primarily found along the southern coast and nesting on the volcanic island, though small groups seem to live near any body of water. Their color scheme is not the common blue and white, but instead white and silvery grey.

· 020 · Pelipper
Their behavior, habitat, and appearance are identical to their predecessors. It is said that a Pelipper hanging around near your fishing spot is good luck, but it is more likely that they just want to mooch off your catch.

· 021 · Sandshrew
While more common in the desert lowlands, groups of Alolan Sandshrew can be found high in the mountains.

· 022 · Sandslash
It is rare for humans to see either variant of this Pokémon, as they are incredibly adept at not being seen when they do not want to be.

· 023 · Vulpix
The Alolan form is more common in Paqori than the common form, but the common form can be found near the regional volcanoes.

· 024 · Ninetales
Similar to how Paqori Cottonee evolves, Ninetales come about when a Vulpix accumulates enough evolutionary mineral deposits in their body. However, this takes far longer than with Cottonee, as Vulpix is a predatory species that relies on what its prey has eaten for those deposits.

· 025 · Cleffa
Cleffa live near high-altitude mineral springs. They are primarily nocturnal, sleeping in caves during the day and basking in the moonlight at night.

· 026 · Clefairy
When Cleffa evolves into Clefairy, it gains the Ice type in addition to Fairy. They like to collect meteorites and float around the mountains using the power of moonlight.

· 027 · Clefable
Due to the high altitudes in Paqori and the thinner ozone layer, the light of the moon is more direct. When there are three cloudless nights before the true full moon and three after, Clefairy who have soaked up the moonlight all that time are bound to evolve into Clefable.

· 028 · Azurill
Azurill is a very common wild Pokémon, able to live in almost all watery environments. They are rarely domesticated and fearful of humans.

· 029 · Marill
Unlike its smaller form, Marill are friendly toward humans. They often retrieve lost items from around their homes and leave them near the closest settlement. The higher the altitude of their home, the more likely they are to have the ability Thick Fat.

· 030 · Azumarill
Not just friendly toward humans, but downright sociable. Confident in their power to handle any threat, Azumarill seem to let go of their caution and wander into human settlements to play with children and help water gardens in exchange for food.

· 031 · Meowth
Meowth are most often seen following their mothers around, learning to hunt small prey. Both colorations of the species are fairly common, as is the Alolan form. The only cases of domestic Meowth in Paqori have been a result of conservationists rescuing them as kittens.

· 032 · Persian
The strongest and most common predator of the mountain areas. They are bold enough to raid settlements and will take domestic Minccino, Cinccino, Mareep, Skiddo, and Gogoat. They are the only predator of Pancham in the region.

· 033 · Ducklett
Found only in the southern coastal area of Paqori during the former half of the cold season. By the time they reach Paqori, most have evolved into Swanna.

· 034 · Swanna
Migrate to the southern coast of Paqori during the region's cold season to take refuge from the even colder southern regions, and fly back to their homes during the warm season.

· 035 · Snover
Snover are rarely seen below the snowline, but are fairly common overall. They will help lost mountaineers find their way back to towns on occasion.

· 036 · Abomasnow
It is believed that Abomasnow have an important role in commanding the seasons.

· 037 · Sigilyph
Often seen around ruins and ancient buildings. They are believed to be spirits invoked long ago to assist in protecting the area. Guides have to make friends with the local Sigilyph before being able to conduct tours, otherwise the Sigilyph will feel threatened and attack. This also makes restoration and preservation of ancient sites an even more delicate operation.

· 038 · Absol
Due to Absol's skill at predicting disasters, the people of Paqori see them as the guardians they are, as opposed to the misguided blame people of other regions place upon them.

· 039 · Skarmory
Skarmory is the national bird of Paqori. It is illegal to capture, hurt, or kill them.

· 040 · Sableye
Instead of feeding on gems, Paqori Sableye prefer the precious metals that are abundant in this region. The effect of subsisting primarily on gold, silver, copper, and the like makes their golden coloration more common than their purple one.

· 041 · Drilbur
Drilbur are not native to Paqori, but were imported during construction of the rail lines for the purpose of ecologically sound mining. They are very friendly and playful.

· 042 · Excadrill
Rather grumpy in general. They dislike the noise of the trains, but refuse to move out of the caves the trains run through. Excadrill tend to just ignore humans and go about their business.

· 043 · Machop
Like Drilbur, Machop were introduced to Paqori during the construction of the rail lines. They like to impress human children by showing off their strength.

· 044 · Machoke
Machoke are heavily utilized in construction projects and maintenance. They are often seen working on roadways and in quarries.

· 045 · Machamp
Most people who train Machamp are older construction workers and quarry workers. Having a Machamp is a status symbol for these occupations.

· 046 · Wooper
Wooper are native to a region north of Paqori, but have been introduced as part of a conservation effort, since their native habitat is becoming increasingly urbanized. They were initially introduced to the largest lake in Paqori, but have since started to broaden their habitat.

· 047 · Quagsire
Conservationists are relieved to see the population of Quagsire increasing, but are starting to worry that they may take over the region's waterways since nothing seems to prey on them.

· 048 · Natu
Natu are seen in the northern part of the region during the latter half of the warm season.

· 049 · Xatu
Xatu migrate from a region north of Paqori during the warm season to nest and breed. They then return to their homes upon the change to the cold season.

· 050 · Druddigon
Druddigon live in caves on the eastern side of the mountain range, close to where the tropical forests begin. Their natural coloration makes for good camouflage in vegetation, so they prefer to hunt in said forests and bring their food back to their dens.

Cities & Places

Spoiler: map for reference!
tumblr_odf4wf6IPJ1us4052o1_1280.png

· 01 · Kunaqori · The Capital City
Long ago, Kunaqori was very deliberately constructed on a mountain plateau with its main street aligned to the rise and set of the sun on the summer solstice, and all other streets either parallel or perpendicular to it. Since its creation, it has been the capital of Paqori and is second in population to Mauchapi. Kunaqori's primary residents are people under the direct employ of the government, particularly rich families, and nobles. It is deemed the center of fashion and trends in Paqori- though if a closer look is taken, such ideas tend to be filtered through Mauchapi first.

· 02 · Naupalla · The Ancient City
Naupalla is a city built in ancient times, currently populated by a group of people known as the Guardians of Paqori. These people are the only ones allowed to live in Naupalla, as they are trained from a young age in techniques to preserve both the physical artefacts and buildings and the ancient culture that shapes the Paqori of today. Buildings inside the city are carefully set up to reflect how they would be used in ancient times and some are even used by the Guardians, who live their lives in the way of the ancients.
The train station is situated outside of the city, along with a modern library, museum, and research center. Naupalla is visited often by both tourists coming from Muqojin and Paqori from all over the region. It is common for Paqori people to make a pilgrimage to Naupalla once every few years to remind themselves of their origins.

· 03 · Mauchapi · The Port City
Mauchapi is Paqori's main port city and the most populous in the region. All exports and imports go through Mauchapi besides tourism, which goes through Muqojin on the north coast. Mauchapi is a market city, full of craftsmen and artisans. People from all over the world come in and out of Mauchapi, and its residents are the most accepting of foreigners in all Paqori.

· 04 · Kuqulla · The Volcanic City
Kuqulla sprawls up the eastern side of the volcanic range. Its technologically advanced nature isn't incredibly obvious at first, but almost everything is powered by geothermal energy. Hot springs and mineral springs are popular here, especially since many residents do difficult manual labor. The volcanic range is a huge source of good-quality stone, so quarries are abundant as are traditional mines excavating for metals, clay, and gems. Kuqulla primarily exports mineral water and basalt fiber- most of its other products stay in Paqori.

· 05 · Llakuna Zicha · The Farming District
Llakuna Zicha is not one city, but rather a district of cities that make up the primary farming regions of Paqori. Five cities and an assortment of villages make up the district.
· 05.1 · Llakta Michik
Michik is home to most herders and their flocks, though the flocks are routinely driven all across Llakuna Zicha. It is located at the crossroads of Mikuju, Chapaka, and Llakta Pamba.

· 05.2 · Llakta Mayu
Mayu is located on the south side of the river, just north of Mauchapi. Its residents primarily use hydroculture techniques to grow a huge variety of herbs and spices.

· 05.3 · Llakta Sispa
Smack in the middle of the road from Kuqulla to Llakta Pamba lies Sispa. Its people have domain over the rolling hills west of the river, which they have over time turned into beautiful gradually terraced farms.

· 05.4 · Llakta Pamba
Pamba sits just above the floodplain, at the heart of Zicha. Its farmers work the nutrient-rich soil from the time the floods recede to the time the waters rise again.

· 05.5 · Llakta Urku
On the road from Kunaqori to Llakta Pamba, Urku takes over the land. The steep mountain terraces are an incredible sight to see, as well as an amazing feat of creating a vast amount of arable land.

· 06 · Mikuju · The Cave City
Mikuju is a city almost entirely situated inside a mountain cave. The primary area surrounds the railway, which was built through the site of an extensive old mine. Some structures have been built using quarried stone and cement in the very open areas, but more have been carved directly into the rock. The consistent climate inside the caves makes it an ideal place for preserving food and brewing various beverages, so the Paqorian government has its main food reserves in Mikuju. Residents mainly process food into preserved states and control the distribution of stores, though mining also still occurs on the lower levels of the city.

· 07 · Chapaka · The Ravine City
Chapaka is a unique city- it is carved directly into the walls of a river-eroded ravine. The city begins at a tall waterfall in the north and spreads down the river. Traditional bridges, ziplines, and ferry bridges criss-cross the ravine along the town. Residents tend to be skilled in climbing and rappelling. Hang gliders and wingsuits are also a common sight. People here fish along the river and farm the floodplains at the very bottom. Chapaka produces the most adventurous spirits in Paqori- those more likely to take on exploring the tropical jungles in the north or leaving the country entirely in search of new experiences.

· 08 · Jaqocha · The Floating City
As the only city situated on the edge of Kucha Luziru, Jaqocha commands the lake. Like Llakta Mayu, hydroculture techniques are used extensively. In addition to hydroculture, aquaculture is prominent. More than half of the city floats atop the water, and many residents prefer not to come ashore at all. The variety of organisms found in Kucha Luziru inspire scientific curiosity in many Jaqocha residents.

· 09 · Sacharu · The Hidden City
Sacharu is so far removed from the rest of Paqori that it is a relative mystery. Its people know far more about the tropical jungle than any others in the region and traverse it fairly easily. Though there are roads to both Chapaka and Jaqocha, the only city Sacharu has regular contact with is Chapaka.

· 10 · Muqojin · The Tourist City
Muqojin is the tourism hub of Paqori. The city itself is full of restaurants, hotels, and shops selling assortments of Paqori-styled trinkets. Its people cheerfully exploit the perception of the quintessential Paqori lifestyle and since tourists rarely go further inland than Kunaqori, the illusion stays unbroken. The coast just south of Muqojin is covered in resort hotels, allowing visitors to relax in luxury when done experiencing the "old-world charm" of the nearby cities.

Pokédex 051-100

· 051 · Barboach
Barboach are more common at higher altitudes. They are the most caught, raised, and eaten fish in mountainous areas.

· 052 · Whiscash
If Barboach evolves, they will make their way downstream in search of a larger body of water to settle in. Many end up in Kucha Luziru.

· 053 · Mudkip
Like Wooper, Mudkip were introduced to Paqori as part of a conservation effort. They live primarily in the swampy areas between the mountains and the jungle. Unfortunately, they are not thriving as well as hoped.

· 054 · Marshtomp
Marshtomp are extremely uncommon to see in the wild, but conservationists assure the populace that their populations are slowly expanding.

· 055 · Swampert
Only one Swampert has been recorded in the Paqori swamps, but she has become something of a mascot of conservation efforts.

· 056 · Bulbasaur
Bulbasaur are found all over Paqori. They have adapted to resemble the flora of their surrounding environment, so their appearance varies wildly across the region. The most commonly depicted Bulbasaur are the desert "Succulent-saurs", whose bulbs are beautifully intricate and completely different even within the same family.

· 057 · Ivysaur
Ivysaur are more populous in the hilly lowlands, as their medium size gives them bulk to defend against predators in the more open terrain while not adding enough to slow them down too significantly.

· 058 · Venusaur
Venusaur are most often found in the tropical jungle. They are hard to spot amongst the dense undergrowth and have a habit of staying still and pretending to be normal plants because of that. Many a traveller has climbed a small hill only to be thrown by a sudden vine wrapped around their ankle.

· 059 · Sandygast
Sandygast are common around the tourist resorts, sneaking around to find children who will add to their pile of sand. During sand sculpture fairs, the works must be protected at all times from Sandygast who are jealous of the intricate models.

· 060 · Palossand
Palossand like to pose as sand sculptures to lure humans near enough so they may feed on their souls. Paqori tourist resorts have learned to charge people up front for their stays.

Notes: I'm working slowly, but I'm still working! :P

It was about time I got to read this one. And what can I say, you get a lot of points from me because of two things: Incan empire and TRAINS. Many people forget that railroads are nice. It's basically a stable scenic path you don't need to worry much about!

Anyway, ahem, back to what matters more. I like the work you did with the map - unlike mine, yours is easy to follow! Different types of settlements and geographical features are well marked and the color scheme is evocative. I do feel the center / south-center region of the map is somewhat more saturated than it needs to be, with the roads twisting towards the geological activity area but then again I am not a Paqori urbanist so I can't tell your people how to organize themselves :p

Speaking of let's talk about those volcanoes and mountains. I presume the volcanoes are not isolated and are instead part of some sort of volcanic chain? As the area kind of feels too small for them to be just there when accompanied by the other mountains. Maybe it is a chain that extends from the sea or something? Have you given thought to what is the effect of the mountainrange over the weather and soil richness of the forested areas to the north?

The information about the cities seems interesting, and I'd like to read some more about them and take a closer to their unique features before seeing if I cam come up with stuff to ask about.

Overall this region project looks nice. Would be a fun place to be neighbours to, it seems.

Yay feedback thank you <3 I frickin love railroads. Also Inca empire. Clearly. Paqori is honestly very much "what if the Inca and the Spanish had a peaceful interaction and also Pokémon".

So the thing about the map is that it's only covering a small area. Pokémon regions are TINY imo, especially considering that everyone seems to walk literally everywhere. While Paqori is big enough to warrant a rail system for distribution of people and goods, it's still pretty small. It's basically based on the geography of Peru, too- take a look:
map_of_peru.jpg

Cut it in half between Huarez and Lima and take the bottom, that's pretty much Paqori, except with Lake Titicaca in the middle. I wanted to focus more on mountain life than coastal, but the other thing is- the map really only shows the major cities by population. There are smaller villages and family sprawls everywhere, I just wanted to keep the labeling down (especially to fit more of the Pokémon aesthetic). I'll be sure to mention that when I update cities & places. :D

Keeping with the straight up ripoff of geological features: the mountain/volcano chain does indeed continue north, south, and into the ocean. It's part of the Ring of Fire irl, and the places we're mapping around it are keeping with the geography. I really prefer to take geography straight from Earth because honestly I am so bad at understanding weather patterns and rain shadows and all that. @_@ It's mentioned in some of the Pokédex entries- the coast is mainly desert, with some small rivers running through that make farming possible in certain places. As you go inland, it becomes a mist-watered hilly grassland, turning into highlands and mountains. The mountains are arid and cool, but the tropics quickly take over at the eastern bases.

So yeah honestly a lot of the bases are copied straight from life because. I like to be scientifically accurate lmao. I'm getting more creative with the cities and culture, especially the Pokémon parts ahaha. The dex entries are honestly really fun to write <3

Funny that you mention the real world basis... since it turns out Suocé is basically a scaled down combination of northern Chile / Argentina and the Paraguay / Brazil southern edge complex turned sideways :p

Perhaps our regions are almost neighbors and we didn't know~

if you ever need a bit of advice regarding stuff like weather patterns, rain shadows, valley irrigation and that kind of stuff, well I am by no means an authority but gimme a call and maybe I can at least help you with some pointers. Then again, you don't need to go absolutely IRL-researched on this one, I would surmise weather in the Pokémon world is less dependent on topography given stuff like Johto and the presence of certain Legendaries. But still, always good to follow a good foundation!

Aha that's pretty great! yay neighbors~

Yeah, I think the geography being based in real-world makes it much easier to be believable, barring some variation due to legendaries and weirdness. Someday I'll actually research how weather works and understand it!! but today is not that day

I read in the other topic you're with some kind of block, but I hope you pass through it soon. What you've done until now is really very interesting.
Maybe I'll try to do another region inspired in South America sometime. Right now I'm writing a fic, and I know I wouldn't do much if I began a project like that now. But it would be interesting to explore other side of this continent that has a great variety of sceneries.
Keep up the good work when you find 'steam' again!
