Introduction
Basically this is a FR Hack Rom with a lot of balance to make all Pokémon relevant and useful and with the addition of more interesting and challenging double battles.
I love third generation. I do random OU battles in Smogon and I play a lot of doubles battles along my friends in my free time so I decided to try to capture what I feel could be the most challenging and fulfilling experience in Pokémon Gen III.

Features
New Strategies for your Favorite Pokémon!

-Changes were made to help and improve all those Pokémon that never shone in either VGC or Smogon while I tried my best at maintaining the game's balance. The detailed description of each Pokémon change is here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1g8JbU0yjGOU6aTgj-SxAT8SuOYyjhLglDRH1Yo18NPU

Epic Battles!

-Tired of always winning by spamming the same attack? Enjoy new and challenging double battles with new movesets and items against your Rival, Giovanni, the Gym Leaders, the Elite Four and many trainers from Johto & Hoenn region!
26 main story Boss Battles + 35 optional Boss Battles! (61 in total)
Beware! Items are disabled in combat!

Catch em' All!

-All Gen 3 Pokémon are obtainable without need of trading (386 in total).

Quality of Life Changes!
  • Starter comes with Exp. Share
  • Pokémon are generated with perfect IV
  • Pokémon learns moves earlier in the game
  • Infinite TM's
  • Infinite Move Tutors
  • Berry Vendor in Lavender Town
  • Free move reminder in Fuchsia City
  • EV Training Lab/Facility
  • National DEX from the start
  • Running shoes from the start
  • Moon Stone & Sun Stone is purchasable in Celadon City along with the other Evolutionary Stones
  • Gen V Repelent
  • Shortcuts for all main dungeons of the game
  • Dark Tunnel doesn't requires Flash to navigate
  • Some maps were modified for an easier navigation
  • Decap. for Pokémon names, moves, items and Start Menu.
  • Added "Nicknamer" a new item that changes any Pokémon nickname.
  • Removed tutorial battle against rival (it was boring).
  • Legendary Pokémon are now breedable with Ditto.
  • Pokémon that has Stone Evolutions (Clefable, Nidoking/Nidoqueen) shares learnset with their previous form (so move reminder can now teach those moves).
  • Running indoors (a really demanded request).
  • Breeding daycare in Route 5.

Abilities Overhaul

-You love your favourite Pokémon but you feel bad for using it because it has an useless ability? All abilities commonly considered boring or useless were replaced for more relevant abilities for the planning of your team.

Learnset Overhaul
-All Pokémon received up to one egg move in their learnsets.

Tools Used
  • AdvanceMap
  • G3T (Gen 3 Tools)
  • HTE (Hopeless Trainer Editor)
  • XSE (eXtreme Script Editor)

FAQ's
Spoiler:

Q: It is completed?
A: Yes, it is completed right now. It is unknown if it will receive more updates in the future.

Q: Which emulator I can use?
A: Pick one of these:
-Android: [ MyBoy! - GBA Emulator]
-Windows: [VBALink]
-MacOS: [OpenEmu]

Q: I can play with friends using MyBoy and link connection with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi?
A: Yes. This feature was already tested and it works flawlessly.

Q: It has physical/special split like in Gen IV+?
A: No. It doesn't. The game is balanced and designed with the old move categories system of Gen III in mind, and applying a physical/special split to it would compromise the balance of the game.

Q: Pokémon that used to evolve by trading evolves by level now?
A: Some by level, other by evolution items. For more information check the documentation on Pokémon species changes:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1g8JbU0yjGOU6aTgj-SxAT8SuOYyjhLglDRH1Yo18NPU

Q: I can use my save file from an older version in more recent versions?
A: Nope. v2.0.0 is not backwards compatible with any other release de FR Advanced Challenge.

Q: You will add X or Y Pokémon? It is my favourite!
A: If it is included in the first 3 generations it could be eventually included. Most of my favourites Pokémon aren't included yet, because the process of adding a new Pokémon to the hack rom implies a lot of research and review of its performance in VGC and Smogon and doing the needed corrections to make it relevant if required. The process is lenghty and requires research and development so Pokémon that will be added in the feature will be added slowly.

Q: You will add Pokémon from newer generation or newer mechanics like Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Dynamax/Gigamax?
A: That is not what I want to do with this project. This Hack Rom is what I humbly think is the "ideal experience" for Pokémon Fire Red, both in the original adventure and battling against friends. If I add those mechanics changes it will be impossible to handle the balance and essence of the game that I'm trying to capture.

Q: Were is the Berry Vendor?
A: He is in Lavender Town, outside of Pokémon Tower and surrounded by flowers.

Q: Were is the free Move Reminder?
A: He is in Fuchsia City, in the same house as the Move Deleter.

Q: The game sometimes crashes when I enter a double battle with a single available Pokémon!
A: Yes. It is a known issue and it's a limitation of Gen III engine when dealing with double battles. Just try to engage boss battles with at least 2 pokémon.

Q: Were are the new optional Boss Battles?
A: Here they are:
-Youngster Joey (Viridian City, near the north exit)
-Falkner (Route 22)
-Bugsy (Route 4, Mt. Moon entrance)
-Whitney (Route 25, outside Bill's house)
-Morty (Lavender Town, Pokémon Tower entrance)

Great work. I am playing through my first Rom Hack and this is great. Quick question: where is the EV Lab located?

Hey, i just finished this Romhack with harcore nuzlocke rules and i have to say it was really nice and challenging! :)
I did all boss battles without overleveling them and decided to eliminate EV-advantage by cheating in rare candies so i dont gain any EVs from grinding (and cause im lazy). I needed 4 attempts in total to beat the game. First one wiped at Brawly, second one at Lance (the one with 3 d-nites before victory road; hardest fight in the game imho), third at Falkner (encounters were quite unlucky this attempt), fourth run was the charm completing the game including post game bosses Oak, Steven and Red. Really loved the infite TM uses - this made team building for all bosses really interesting. In addition to not knowing the strats/movesets of the bosses - just knowing their lineups - theorycrafting the bossfights was definitely the highlight for me. Oh and the infinite suppy of Lum Berries was also very helpful!

MVPs of my run:
-Starmie: amazing coverage and versitility, carried me through the E4
-Snorlax: well its kinda OP ;)
-Shuckle: reeeeeally lucky encounter in rock tunnel, saved some iffy situations but i didnt overuse it as it might have trivialized some fights
-Primeape: very underrated offensive mon, especially with choice band :D

Best Encounters (imo):
-Lance pre Victory road: "ez ice beam spam" i thought, well thick fat and EQ-spam ended that run :D
-Wallace second fight: Despite being mono water this guy was very versitile
-Steven: well he is the best designed Boss in Gen3 so no wonder he was great here too
Bosses with 6 mons are always the best, feels the most balanced, for this reason many Mid-Late game Kanto/Jotho bosses were kinda easy (Koga, Giovanni, Pryce, Jasmine). But if youre not prepared pretty much any boss can rek you!

Ok enough rambling! Great game Devlain! Thanks for making it, i had a blast <3

Thank you so much for playing and for your detailed feedback. It makes me so happy when I see that people enjoys playing my hack rom as much as I enjoyed making it.
I agree that Koga, Giovanni and Jasmine are kinda a joke and that there is a clear difficulty spike between the last gym and the pre-league content but after a lot of testing with my team we found it challenging and interesting.
I'm so glad that you liked the battles against Lance, Wallace and Steven. Personally I have a great time fighting Silver, the Rival and Red too.

has the metal coat location changed? i used a randomizer to fix trade evolutions, but i still need the item to evolve the pokemon in question. a scyther, in this case, and i'd rather not wait for the post game. if it hasn't, i'll just use something else.
The new evolution methods are in the FAQ, or here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1g8JbU0yjGOU6aTgj-SxAT8SuOYyjhLglDRH1Yo18NPU/edit#gid=0

Hi there people! I'm releasing v.2.5.0 today.
This version has passed for a lot of testing and there's a lot of changes because there were a lot of versions before that rested within the test team and didn't got published.
Thanks again to all the people that showed and shows interest in this project, I appreciate your feedback a lot.
We also have new documentation. Take a time to give it a look, I know you will find some useful information.

v2.5.0
Boss Battles (AI enhancement)
-The next AI were enhanced:
  • Erika
  • Falkner
  • Chuck
  • Wattson
  • Norman

Boss Battles (upgraded teams)
-The next bosses have new pokémons:
  • Brock now has a Steelix instead of an Onix
  • Misty now has an extra Starmie instead of a Staryu
  • Giovanni(1) now has a Steelix instead of an Onix
  • Giovanni(2) now has a Nidoking instead of a Nidorino

Quality of Life Changes (QoL)
-Now all Pokéballs (with the exception of Master Ball) can be bought in Viridian City’s mart and in Celadon City’s mart (5F).

Balance Changes
-Peyton S. the Bugcatcher (BOSS) now has a Sentret Lv. 8 (instead of Lv. 9).
-Supernerd Miguel (BOSS) now has a Grimer & Voltorb Lv. 15 (instead of Lv. 16).

v2.4.2
Bug Fixes
-Corrected starter Pikachu’s event and replaced it with a new one.

v2.4.0
Quality of Life Changes (QoL)
-Nature colored stats added.

v2.3.3
Boss Battles
-Increased levels of Pokémon Tower Rocket Grunt’s boss battle.

v2.3.2
Bug Fixes
  • Heracross now has Guts as its only ability as intended.
  • Corrected Picknicker’s (Route 9) positioning.
  • Added Camper’s (Route 6) missing battle.
  • Added Pickniker’s (Route 9) missing battle.

v2.3.1
Pikachu Joins the Party!
-The infamous double battle glitch when having a single Pokémon still lingers and a lot of players were frustrated encountering this bug in their first match, so I found the inclusion of a 2nd starter as a solution. Pikachu is also a Pokémon that fits the starter criteria and gives a lot of insight about what we can do in double battles (since it has Lightning Rod, Growl, Encore and learns Thunder Wave early in the game) so it works as a tutorial too.
-Now you get a lvl4 Pikachu in addition to your starter in the Prof. Oak starting sequence.

Boss Battles (New Bosses)
-Added new mandatory boss battles:
  • Peyton S. the Bugcatcher in Viridian Forest
  • Super nerd in Mt. Moon
  • Rocket grunt at the end of Nugget Bridge
  • Camper in Route 6
  • Picknicker in Route 9
  • Picknicker in Rock Tunnel
  • Rocket grunt before rescuing Mr. Fuji from Pokémon Tower
  • Scientist in Pokémon Mansion
  • Pokémaniac in Victory Road

Boss Battles (AI enhancement)
-The next AI were enhanced:
  • Pryce
  • Karen
  • Brawly
  • All rival battles (except for champion battle rematch)

Boss Battles (Upgraded Teams)
-The next bosses have new pokémons:
  • Whitney now has a Clefable instead of a Clefairy
  • Jasmine now has two Magnetons instead of two Magnemites
  • Giovanni (Gym Leader) now has two Rhydons instead of two Rhyhorns
  • Koga now has Weezings instead of Koffings
  • Sabrina now has an extra Alakazam instead of a Kadabra
  • Bruno (e4) now has two Steelixs instead of two Onixs
  • Blaine now has only Rapidashs and Arcanines instead of Growlithe and Ponyta

HM Overhaul
-Many people complain about HM’s. Even if I did my best to get rid of them, I’m kinda limited technically and in time to implement a better solution. Also, I was trying to do my best to make conservatives changes that could be interesting. Double Edge and Body Slam are 2 moves that are found too late in the game and maybe having them earlier would make the life of many people much easier and Protect is an effect that is always valuable in double battles.
  • Fly changed to Protect’s effect
  • Cut changed to Double Edge’s effect
  • Strength changed to Body Slam’s effect

Bug Fixes
  • High grass changed for flowers in Cerulean City’s south path (it doesn’t have any encounter and people used to think it was for a Cerulean City’s encounter).
  • Fixed missing collision in Route 20.
  • Now move tutors don't warn you that the move can only be learnt once (because they are unlimited).

Anyone else have a problem where when they go to Viridian and pick up the parcel from the Pokemart, they get stuck in a loop where the attendant keeps handing them Great Balls one at a time (the first one was an Ultra Ball). Like I appreciate the 5 million balls but I would also like to advance past the first Pokemart!

I'll check this and try to publish a correction today. Thank you for reporting!
