Well that's mainly because the writer of Overlord is actually a writer.

And those are really hard to find in the LN industry, and the isekai/trapped in a different world genre by extension. It's actually pretty terrifying when you consider how many of these are popular.

Actually, pretty much.
Database is more about world itself and its rules while Overlord is about one important guy and SAO is about Kirito-kun's waifus.

Even then, I really haven't seen all that many of those, either. At least from the recent batch.

I mean, LNs are popular in part because they're easy to digest. Not everyone finds joy in chewing through books like War and Peace.

It's not just the LN industry that suffers from that, if recent shows are anything to go by. It's been two years now since I saw a show I was completely satisfied with (and it was bloody Cross Ange; my standards aren't exactly sky high here) and trends like this are...discouraging. To say the least.

I wonder if it's more the characters that are popular than the series. You've got Megumin from Konosuba, Hestia from DanMachi, those Rom/Ram clones in Re:Zero, etc...rarely do I hear people actually praise the quality of the show itself. It's always one character that gets all the praise. Depressing.

Actually, that sounds like it'd be better than Overlord, if the world is given sufficient detail. The uncertainty surrounding Overlord was what made it appealing to me...that and the soundtrack. God almighty, that soundtrack.

Naruto ended today at episode 720.

Hope you're all ready for Boruto's reign of terror to begin in a couple of weeks time.

Boruto can bring it on.

Trying to decide on whether to make a new merch sharing thread or just to dump my merch photos here.

Who knows, maybe Boruto won't have as much filler, since it's not waiting for a manga to jump ahead of it?

I'm only on episode 10 of the original series...why am I even doing this.

Yeah, I definitely think that's a part of it, and a few years ago I would've even been totally on board.

But then LNs started to get brought over and the quality of both the writing and the writers started to come to light both from a Western critical perspective and from a personal one. And I think Gi(a)rlish Number hit the nail on the head pretty perfectly when it comes to the dime a dozen LNs roaming the wild. Hell, in some cases the only think that prevents these series from falling into obscurity is that they're picked and handled by a solid animation studio or manga artist, and oftentimes the way they get to that point is because they have attractive art (same goes for their popularity prior to that point.

This isn't to say it's always the case of course or that skill doesn't matter, because it certainly has an effect most of the time. There's a reason series like Boogiepop, Baccano, and various other LNs known for being well constructed and well-written receive the following that they do.

As someone who sat through half a year of unhindered recap (read: the beginning of Dragon Ball Super), you'd be surprised at what they're capable of.

The ironic thing's that during that time the "filler" was better than the actual arcs, but I digress.

Huh...I thought "filler" was the dirtiest swear word imaginable in the anime community.

Honestly, the only bad filler I've seen is the Garlic Jr. Saga in Dragonball Z. That was horrendous. Well, unless we're counting annoying things like flashback episodes and lazy clip-show movies. Those are worse...at least filler is new content. Watching a mangled abridged version of a series in movie format is even worse.

I'm not inherently against compilation movies, especially when they have the original minds behind them and present the content in a way that makes it actually feel like a rewatch worth watching.

The Gurren Lagann movies were like this and I love 'em to death for it. It's honestly my preferred way to ingest the series (and their ending sequences touch my soul). But Imaishi totally knew what he was doing and what he wanted to add, how to string the whole experience together and how not to make content that was out of place. I guess "intent" and "execution" are the important things here, and I can certainly say those two ideas are usually what break comp movies more often than they make them.

...I wish I could argue with you, I really do. But the dub vs. sub thing is nearly as bad as the dual audio argument in gaming...and as usual I'm in the minority

I'd say that the dirtiest words are 'western live action' at the moment tbh.

Can't wait for that Western adaptation of Shingeki no Kyojin, Attack of the Titans, featuring main characters Aaron Jackson, Melissa Anchorman, and Arnold Bernstein.

Roll on Netflix Sailor Moon and Code Geass.

That said, I may go and see Ghost in the Shell. Western live action adaptations can't be any worse than Eastern live action adaptations...right?

I was going to see GITS but that Steve Aoki 'remix' gave me a cancer so aggressive that I probably won't make it to the 31st.

^ What that reminds me of is that I need to get more exercise and keep working on a better diet. Shame his time was over so soon, but it's not surprising given his profession.

Also, in lighter news, MyWaifuList.moe is a real site.

I should be surprised by that, but I'm not. I think I've been completely desensitised to this stuff at this point.

I am, however, very disappointed that there isn't a corresponding Husbando site.
