Alright pixel artists you know the drill. I'm just gonna let you chat about what your thoughts are until we need something specific.

The working idea is a modified FRLG style for sprites, so do with that what you will. Start with new heroes, maybe? You guys are the experts here. ;)

I think that in order for us to be able to create a design that makes sense, for the player characters that is, we'll need to first decide what kind of region the hack will take place in.
Will it be a tropical region like Alola? Or a primarily cold region like Sinnoh?

The clothing and accessories that the characters wear are a pretty big factor in their designs, and they're always consistent with the regional climate.

    So if that is the case we are keeping all the original sizes that were originally used in the games then?
    I just want to make sure before any doodling commences.

    Yes as avatar says region and style are important colour scheme as well which depends on the story, a bright colourful region with bright colourful characters or the latter..
    I assume we are using the FR tiles or has that not been 100% decided, because that will affect how things look as well, in a sense.

    Well the games have hardware limits which of course enforce size and color restrictions.

    64x64 for the trainer card sprite (16 colors including 1 transparent color)
    128x128 for the intro sprite (try to keep it below 50 or so colors).

    But as mentioned earlier maybe waiting up for the story's setting and such to be developed would be ideal. If you have any questions regarding the technical limitations or any restrictions a sprite must have for the GBA don't hesitate to ask me!

      These are awesome but I can't help but see the male protagonist as a female with short hair. I think it's the headband he has.

      Well, since I'm already sketching.

      I haven't kept a ton of tabs on the story but a glance though the rival isn't very fleshed out? So I dunno, have an arrogant prim booksmartass girl.
      Edit: I became less interested through it, but hey mom professor.

        Bumping this to see if anyone has any ideas for the first gym leader? If you haven't been keeping up with the thread they're a Fighting type leader who is obsessed with fighting games and their gym doubles as an arcade. Gender is flexible so it would be awesome to see ideas of them all! Their personality is bratty and dramatic. Their signature mon is Pancham.

            I still think the boy is a bit too feminine due to long hair and the headband, but he could look totally different in sprite form, so I say, go for it.

                I saw a stray discord mention about the test overworlds I did. Avatar and I spoke and he was going to do them, but these are the pallets I decided on. I very much don't like the blonde version of the girl, and I don't see a young boy as slightly feminine looking as a criticism.

                    These are pretty awesome, love the female hero. I would do as Wobb said and remove the headband and then he won't look so feminine. I could give it a go later but I'm not great at overworlds.

                    Thanks for posting these. I do think, as our OW specialist, Avatar should handle these but these are definitely a great start and should make his job a hell of a lot easier.

                    RE: Boy - I don't see there being an issue with having longer hair and I like the headband. You need to remember he's a young boy and, short of giving him muscles and a beard, will look somewhat feminine. I also think the art style Nina uses is skewing your opinions a bit, just looking at the OW and it is obvious he's a boy to me.
