Should Valentine's Day be celebrated?

Valentine's Day or alternatively saint Valentine's Day is the celebration of love. It originated from western Christian liturgy to honour saint Valentinus. However, it appears to have lost its true meaning and has been taken over by commercialisation....is it time to abandon Valentine's Day?

as long as companies and stuff keep cashing in on the cards and candy and stuffed animals and other vday related stuff, i don't see us abandoning it anytime soon.

To be honest I'm not really sure how this is working in other countries. Is this considered a Holiday? Not here, but I guess anyone can celebrate anything he/she wants.

You could argue that any big celebration we have in the West has been basterdised by commercialism to the point that they no longer mean anything.

I used to observe the day, when I was in long term relationships. I'd take whoever my partner was out somewhere fancy and book us a hotel, but that was more a means to an end really. I'm in something pretty casual this year and she's not feeling great this week so I'm gonna at most go to the pub with my friends.

I don't celebrate it because I don't need relationships. Sorry to break this to you, but that thing we call love is really just a chemical reaction that compels animals to breed. It hits hard, then it slowly fades, leaving you stranded in a failed marriage. Break the cycle. Rise above. Focus on science...and watching Rick & Morty.

I think it should only be celebrated by those who can, while the rest of us celebrate "F*ck The Rest of You, I Got Pineapple Pizza for Myself" Day.

I'd celebrated my own special way: gifting my girl a shiny, Alolan, HA, Timid, Female Vulpix in a Love Ball.

...Is this even a question to debate?

Let people celebrate it if they want. Just because a part of the population doesn't like it, doesn't mean it needs to go away.

February 14 is also National Donor Day so you can choose to celebrate by giving someone blood instead of a heart.

Hearts are good too, register to become an organ donor!

I think it's been commercialised to the point of bad taste - the trifecta of roses, chocolate and teddy bear as your Valentine's day Starter Pack is a perfect example of the gaudiness of it all.

I agree that asking whether or not it should go away was a poor choice of words. Valentine's Day has become pretty cemented as a globally recognized if not celebrated holiday. Regardless of its origins, the day has been popularized in the media as the time of year to shower one's romantic partner in gifts to be eaten or appreciated for a short amount of time. And then it's over; it's such a short and quickly forgotten holiday (until next year of course) that to question its relevance is pretty trivial.

People will also take advantage of any and every potential excuse to have sex.

Especially Americans.

No

It should be a little celebration only some choose to participate. I don't like how schools try to shove that down on us.

Could you elaborate on this a little? Celebration of Valentine's day in schools seems to be a positive thing to me because it gives them an opportunity to discuss relationships with kids, as well as Valentine's providing a pretty model (albeit, exaggerated) example of how happy couples treat each other. But that aside, I can't say I've ever thought of schools to be pushing the day particularly hard. Last thing they want is their kids trying to emulate adult relationships whilst in school, ahaha.

This day is insensitive to asexuals. And I just hate the concept too.

How? Asexuals can still be in non-sexual relationships. Valentine's day is a celebration of love, not just sex.

(Wow that was a thread bump)
I've never really cared about Valentine's Day (except for the candy), it doesn't really apply to me since I'm a loner so why celebrate it?
But everyone else is welcome to celebrate it

I'm really gratefull for Valentine's day existence cause it allows me to wish "happy non-Valentine's day" to my girlfriend as often as I want. It has become a very important joke between us :)
